Jesus was poor, don’t be power-hungry – Pope Francis

The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has rebuked those that are extremely hungry for wealth and power to the detriment of others while asking them to imitate the Christian deity, Jesus Christ, who according to Biblical records, was poor during his time on earth.

Recalling Jesus’ birth in a stable, Pope Francis rebuked those “ravenous” for wealth and power at the expense of the vulnerable, including children, in a Christmas Eve homily decrying war, poverty and greedy consumerism, Associated Press reports from the Vatican City.

Christmas is an annual Christian festival, held on December 25 in most parts of the world, including Nigeria, celebrating Jesus Christ’s birth.

In the splendour of St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis presided over the evening Mass attended by about 7,000 faithful, including tourists and pilgrims, who flocked to the church on a warm evening and took their place behind rows of white-robed pontiffs.

He drew lessons from the humility of Jesus’ first hours of life in a manger.

Francis said,

“While animals feed in their stalls, men and women in our world, in their hunger for wealth and power, consume even their neighbours, their brothers and sisters,” the pontiff lamented.

“How many wars have we seen? And in how many places, even today, are human dignity and freedom treated with contempt?

“As always, the principal victims of this human greed are the weak and vulnerable,” said Francis, who didn’t cite any specific conflict or situation.

“This Christmas, too, as in the case of Jesus, a world ravenous for money, power and pleasure does not make room for the little ones, for the so many unborn, poor and forgotten children,” the pope said, reading his homily with a voice that sounded tired and almost hoarse.

“I think above all of the children devoured by war, poverty and injustice.”

Pope Francis meets ‘Spider-Man’ during weekly service at the Vatican (Video)

The head of Catholic Church, Pope Francis recently had a historic and memorable first time encounter with superhero character, Spider-Man at the Vatican.

The heroic Spider-Man dropped in on Pope Francis’ general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday.

A man dressed in a full, skin-tight, red, black and blue costume of the comic book and film character – including head cover – sat in the VIP section of the audience in Vatican’s San Damaso Courtyard.

He sat quietly next to a priest dressed in black who appeared to be unperturbed by the colourful character in the next seat.

The man behind the mask turned out to be Mattia Villardita, 27, from northern Italy. He was given a place in the VIP section because of his work dressing up in superhero costumes and visiting sick children in hospitals.

At the end of the audience, he was introduced to the pope and gave the pontiff a Spider-Man mask.

APC threatens to report Fr. Mbaka to Pope Francis for ”threatening” Buhari

The All Progressives Congress (APC), says Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, spiritual director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, is threatening the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Yekini Nabena, deputy national publicity secretary, said this in reaction to comments credited to the Catholic priest.

In a sermon on Wednesday, Mbaka asked Buhari to resign over the worsening insecurity in the country.

But in a statement on Friday, the APC spokesman said if the priest continues to “cause disaffection” for the government, he will report him to Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church.

Nabena said Mbaka is supposed to use “all known spiritual means of averting crisis but rather threatening a democratically elected government for his own personal benefit while pretending to be speaking for the people”.

The statement read; “One will wonder whom Father Mbaka is emulating because the Lord Jesus Christ did not threaten to bring down the government during his own time, in fact, Jesus Christ obeyed and honoured constituted authority.

“That’s why he paid his tax. We are calling on Father Mbaka to concentrate on his spiritual calling and stop speaking like politicians who it is obvious he (Mbaka) has been dining and wining with.

“If Mbaka has found another political ally, it is better to leave a political message for politicians.

Calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to either resign or be impeached because of the current challenges is ungodly.

“Father Mbaka should not, however, take his luck too far because there is a lot to tell the Vatican and the Pope about his person and his sources of inspiration.”

He asked the priest to emulate Pastor EA Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) who “prays and fasts” to avert crisis in the country.

Breaking: Pope Francis, ex-pope Benedict get virus vaccines: Vatican.

Both Pope Francis and his predecessor, former pope Benedict XVI, have received the coronavirus vaccine, the Vatican said on Thursday.

“I can confirm that as part of the vaccination program of the Vatican City State, as of today, the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine has been administered to Pope Francis and to the Pope Emeritus,” said Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office in response to journalists’ questions.

Pope Francis had announced during an interview with Italian television station Tg5 on Sunday that he planned to receive the vaccine this week.

The Pope referred to the vaccination as “an ethical action, because you are gambling with your health, you are gambling with your life, but you are also gambling with the lives of others.”

Private Secretary to Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, Bishop Georg Gaenswein, had also confirmed that the Pope emeritus would be vaccinated.
