Parents of convicted cultists will be punished – Governor Sanwo-Olu

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the parents of children convicted for cultism will also face punitive measures.

Sanwo-Olu stated this while addressing pupils and students on Thursday during the Children’s Day celebration at the Police College, Ikeja.

According to the governor, a new law had been signed to fight cultism, adding that parents must be alive to their responsibilities by paying attention to the moral upbringing of their children.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said, “The new law against cultism prescribes punitive measures for parents of young people convicted of cultism. Parents should be vigilant and monitor their children.”

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said, “The new law against cultism prescribes punitive measures for parents of young people convicted of cultism. Parents should be vigilant and monitor their children.”

“We owe them a duty to ensure that their dreams and aspirations are realised through continuous training, guidance and mentoring”

In her speech, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, said the state government, through its free education policy from primary to secondary school level, had continued to commit huge resources to the upbringing of the children.

Parents of Nigeria Kidnap Victims Plead for Government Help

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) – When Linda Peter last spoke to her daughter, the brief phone call left her relieved the teenager was alive but distraught because she could not pay any ransom demanded.

Peter’s 18-year-old daughter, Jennifer, was among 39 students abducted by gunmen on March 11 from a forestry college in the northwestern Nigerian state of Kaduna. The captors, who called from the teenager’s phone, threatened to kill the male captives and force females into marriage, but did not specify the ransom sum sought.

“The government is not doing anything to help these children,” said Peter, a widow and mother of five who sells vegetables for a living but has not worked since her daughter was taken. “We don’t have anything,” she said.

Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai has repeatedly said his state government will not negotiate with “bandits”, as the marauding criminal gangs are known, or pay ransoms.

Kidnapping for ransom has become an industry in restive northern Nigerian states where over 700 people have been abducted at education institutions since December. President Muhammadu Buhari in February told state governments that “rewarding” such crimes with money and vehicles, could “boomerang disastrously”.

Peter, faced with the prospect of losing her daughter, said the government must do more to free the students.

“I’m angry with them,” she said through tears of the Kaduna government, at a meeting of relatives whose loved ones were taken in the same raid.

Kaduna state’s security commissioner, responding to the comments, referred Reuters to an April 16 statement.

“The governor will continue to work hard until banditry is contained, without succumbing to emotional blackmail and gradual politicization of the unfortunate situation,” it said.

Much of the fear felt by Peter and other worried parents at the meeting, held on Wednesday, stems from the killing of five students who were among around 17 people kidnapped on April 21 from Greenfield University, elsewhere in the state.

Catherine Saleh, whose 29-year-old son Stephen Shuani was taken from the forestry college, said she too had received calls from the kidnappers, initially demanding 500 million naira ($1.31 million) – an unattainable sum for the teacher with a 100,000 naira monthly salary – before reducing that to 50 million.

“We cannot raise that money,” she said. “If I had the money, I wouldn’t send my child to that school.”

The men purporting to be the captors told her to call government officials to demand they negotiate with them, but she does not know anyone to contact.

“These children are between life and death. They can shoot them at any time,” Saleh said.

On the same day as the meeting, Dorathy Yohanna, one of the dead Greenfield students, was buried.

Her father, Yohanna Meck, said he hoped state officials would learn from the tragedy.

“Government should be proactive, they should not just keep quiet,” he told reporters after the funeral. “They should be proactive to help the situation because it’s getting out of hand.”

Lagos Assembly passes anti-cultism Bill seeking to punish parents of culprits

The Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the anti-cultism bill which seeks to punish parents whose wards are found guilty of cultism.

The bill awaits the assent of the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The House passed the bill ‘Unlawful Societies and Cultism (Prohibition) Bill 2020’ during the plenary session on Monday through a voice vote conducted by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

The speaker said the punishment, although not specified, was to further prohibit unlawful societies and cultism in the state.

“Parents of cultists found guilty of cultism in the state ‘might be liable’ for punishment.

“The bill, if signed into law, will provide for the prohibition of unlawful societies and cultism in Lagos and for connected purposes.

“Though, we will also differentiate between the types of cultism in the country, so that we won’t solve one problem and create another,” he said.

A lawmaker David Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II, described cultism as a “major challenge to us in the state.”

Mr Setonji, therefore, admonished parents to take proper care of their children by ensuring their compliance with societal norms and values.

“There is nothing wrong in associations coming together, but when it has to do with devilish ideas, causing commotion, that is what we are against.

“As a result, parents should learn to take care of their children to ensure they conform to societal norms and values,” he said.

Girls Who Hired Assassins To Kill Their Parent Have Been Sentenced To Death

The court has finally dished out a trial and a verdict over the case of two wicked girls who sent assassins to kill their parent as a result of a few flimsy excuses they gave which stemmed from their need for money.

This heinous crime took Nigeria by a storm and hasn’t died down as many people haven’t backed down in showing their disgust and urgent need for justice.

These two girls who are from Enugu (names withheld) reportedly sent assassins to kidnap and murder the two people who brought them into this world – their parent.

They had the intention of inheriting their parent’s property after their evil plan was successfully executed.

Reportedly, the girls were arrested by Enugu State Police after they were reported by their relatives who suspected that they were behind the death of their parent.

After a series of investigations by the police and after all evidences pointed to them, the girls confessed by sending assassins to kill their parent all in a bid to inherit their wealth.

During questioning, one of the girls stated her reason for having to hire assassins to kill her biological parent, stating that her father is a very wealthy man who only spent money on women outside and never made a move to buy them new clothes.

She also went further to say that her father is a very stingy man and that was the main reason for hiring assassins to kill him.

The High court in Enugu state convened to hear the case of the two girls who were labelled to have murdered their father, thereby denying him is right to life as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Having found them guilty, the presiding judge sentenced them to death by the gallows.

We are presently waiting for the state governor to sign the death warrant.

This should serve as an eye opener to selfish and impatient youths out there who are always looking for ways to make fast and illegal wealth.

Patience and perseverance won’t take anything out of you, just believe that God would always reward you for your efforts.
