Osinbajo charges leaders in Nigeria to remain calm in times of adversity

The Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday charged Nigerian leaders to remain calm even in times of adversity.

Osinbajo, according to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, stated this in his keynote address at the 25th anniversary conference of the Redeemer’s International Leadership Academy.

He said: “It is in times of adversity or hardship that leaders are most relevant and most needed.

The leader cannot afford to lose his cool or his focus. He must calm himself down and calm the people down as well.

“When all is well, there is no need for guidance, encouragement, or instruction but it is especially in the midst of wars, conflicts, insurgency, famines, danger, and fear, that people look to leadership.”

He made references to the Biblical Moses and the Israelites, saying the prophet looked up to God for help and God spoke to Him.

The Vice President added: “But note that Moses first gave the people confidence in the power of God to deliver and fulfill His promises.

“He had not yet heard from God on this particular problem, but because he knew the God he served, he was able to say this with confidence.

“In adversity, especially where the future looks bleak, people want to give up, retreat, go back and they certainly don’t want to go forward.”

President Buhari appoints Osinbajo Poverty Committee chairman

President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated a new poverty committee, appointing Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as the chairman.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Buhari inaugurated the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy (NPRGS) with Mr Osinbajo as its chairman.

Speaking at the inauguration, the president Buhari reiterated his regime’s commitment to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in10 years with a well-researched framework for implementation and funding.

He noted that the NPRGS had already proposed establishing a private equity fund, the Nigeria Investment and Growth Fund, to lead resource mobilisation drive and sustainably manage the resources.

This journey began in January 2021 when I directed the chairman of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to collaboratively work together to articulate what will lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

“I am happy to note that the process of designing this inclusive poverty reduction strategy recognised and addressed past mistakes as well as laid the foundation for a sustainable poverty reduction.

“This would be done through wide range consultations held at all levels of government, development partners, the private sector as well as the civil society,’’ he stated.

He added that the NPRGS would address underlying causes of poverty on the basis of which it developed programmes that would deal with the multi-dimensional nature of poverty.

However, President Buhari admitted that “the major challenge before this National Steering Committee is to translate our good intentions into positive impact of for the average Nigerian.”

He listed the steering committee’s responsibilities to include anchoring collaborative efforts and providing oversight for the implementation of the strategy.

It will also guide Technical Working Group and federal ministries, extra-ministerial departments and agencies, subnational governments, and other stakeholders on meeting the objectives of the programme.

Buhari, Osinbajo receive Covid-19 vaccination

President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice, Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday both received the Covid-19 Vaccination at the State House, Abuja.

Both leaders received the AstraZeneca vaccine a day after the Federal Government launched the vaccination exercise in the country.

The COVID-19 vaccine was administered on the President by his chief personal physician in the presence of the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and some members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Shortly after President Buhari took the jab, Professor Osinbajo also received the vaccine which was also administered to him by his chief personal physician.

Both leaders were later presented with electronic cards containing the details of their vaccinations by the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib.

Others who witnessed the vaccination of the President and his vice were members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu.

FG’s Revenue Hit by Oil Production Cut will End Soon, Says Osinbajo

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said the oil production cut deal by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies has resulted in lower revenue generation for the federal government.

Osinbajo said yesterday that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources had a mandate to drastically reduce the unit cost of crude oil production in the country in order to increase government revenue.

“It is imperative that in our current era of scarce resources, we should aim at a unit cost of production in single digit,” he said at the 38th Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE).

The vice-president, who was represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, said the collapse in crude oil demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic caused the recent sudden slump in oil prices.

“The low price and OPEC+ crude oil production curtailment have largely resulted in lower revenue generation for the government,” he said.

Osinbajo expressed confidence that the country would achieve the desired goal of finding more hydrocarbon deposits in the Nigerian basins, notwithstanding the curtailment in production.

He said, “We have the assurance that production curtailment will soon be over as the world economy improves. In order to grow our reserves, we have proposed fiscal incentives that will attract the investments in our basins in the Petroleum Industry Bill.

“In addition, the fiscal provision for gas business will be one of the most attractive in Africa.”

Budget 2021: Buhari, Osinbajo to spend N4 billion on food, cars, travels

While the government plans to spend big on presidential feeding and travels, it will spend less than N300 million to fight malaria in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo plan to spend N3.97 billion on food, cars, and travels in 2021, details of the proposed 2021 budget released by the Budget Office of the Federation show.

The breakdown of the proposed budget, which is awaiting the approval of the National Assembly, shows that the president has budgeted N2.4 billion for his local and international travels.

The figure is slightly lower (a difference of N1 million) than the amount he budgeted for travels in 2020.

Of the N2.4 billion, N1.65 billion is for the president’s international travels while the president’s local travels will cost N775 million.

Similarly, N98 million is budgeted for the president’s “foodstuff and catering supplies”, while N25 million was budgeted for refreshments and meals, the same as last year.

For the vice president, N801 million has been budgeted for travels for the year, the same amount budgeted for 2020.

Local travel will gulp N283 million while international travels get N517 million in 2021.

Similarly, for the vice president, N50 million was budgeted for foodstuff and catering materials and supplies, and N18 million for refreshments and meals.

The budget also shows that N436 million will be spent on purchasing motor vehicles for the State House.

An additional N116 million will be spent on tyres for bulletproof vehicles, plain cars, close circuit vehicles, platform trucks, jeeps, Hilux, ambulances and other utility and operational vehicles for the Presidency.

Misplaced priority

The huge amount the administration is planning for the convenience of the first and second families significantly outdo allocations to some critical projects of public health and interest.

As an example, despite Nigeria’s high malaria burden and mortality rate, the government’s total budget for the fight against the disease is below N300 million for the entire year.

Fifteen countries accounted for 80 per cent of all malaria cases globally in 2016, according to the World Health Organisation. Nigeria accounted for the highest proportion of cases globally (27%), followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (10%), India (6%) and Mozambique (4%).

In all, these are all of the government’s subheads for malaria, totalling N297 million.

Basil Enwegbara, an economic analyst, said Nigeria is being run as an “economic no man’s land” where the rulers rule as outsiders, taking advantage of what they do not own.

“It doesn’t bother them the state of the economy, the poverty capital of the world, they should lead by example and stop living in the false world,” he said.

“They don’t sacrifice, they believe that as soon as they are in power, they must exploit and loot treasury because it is their turn.

“It is only in Nigeria people continue to budget year in year out for the same things they consume, must Nigeria be overfeeding the president and vice president? Must they travel in convoys of cars? If you go to places like Dubai, you see the ruler riding in two cars. He knows he is saving the money to develop his country and his people love him for his sacrifice.”

To avoid all frivolous spendings, he advised that the economy be decentralised by moving economic activities to the states with little or no revenue coming to the centre.
