The DG noted that corps members’ involvement in previous elections and other national assignments had attracted tremendous commendation for the scheme.

NYSC warns corpers against ‘unauthorised’ trips

The Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, in a visit to Kaduna orientation camp advised corpers against unauthorised trips, saying they could undermine their security.

The visit, which took place on Saturday, was the first by Mr Ahmed since his assumption of office on January 30.Addressing the 2023 Batch “A” stream “I” corps members, who were currently having their orientation programme at the temporary orientation camp at the Government College, Kurmin Mashi, Kaduna, Mr Ahmed said that unauthorised journeys would attract sanctions as enshrined in the scheme’s acts.

He noted that his administration would continue to ensure that corps members enjoyed improved welfare and security.

He stressed that the contents of the NYSC bye-laws would be applied on every infraction, urging corpers to conduct themselves within the provisions of the law.

“It is a thing of pride to serve your fatherland, but don’t risk your lives via unauthorised journeys. Be disciplined and prayerful. Also be confident of yourselves, do your work diligently and I assure you, nothing bad will happen to you.

“Avoid crime, obey the rules and regulations in the camp, and respect your leaders,” he advised.

The DG specifically warned the corpers not to indulge in political arguments, but rather participate as unbiased electoral officers, by taking cognisance of the electoral laws during the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

He also warned them against posting camp activities on social media, urging them to forward their complaints to the scheme’s management.

The NYSC chief executive also advised the corpers to ensure that they left good legacies in their places of primary assignments and host communities.

Earlier, in his camp situation report, the State’s Coordinator of NYSC, Agbor Obim, said a total of 1,077 corps members, comprising 407 males and 679 females, were registered in the camp.

He said the corpers were fully participating in camp activities and listed some of the challenges to include high cost of goods and services, hike in the price of fuel, inadequate accommodation, among others.

The director-general presented a cow to the corps members, 200 plastic chairs and 10 standing fans to the orientation camp.

The highpoint of the event was the visit of the director-general to the camp clinic and hostels, as well as a display of cultural dances by corps members.

The NYSC helmsman also paid a visit to three corps members recuperating at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.

The three corps members were transiting from Yobe to Anambra for their national service when they were involved in a motor accident in Kaduna.

Corps members to now present fitness certificates at orientation camps

Prospective corps members in the country, will henceforth be required to present fitness certificates from recognized public health facilities at orientation camps across the country.

National Youth Service Corps’ Director, Press and Public Relations of the NYSC, Eddy Megwa said the certificate of fitness will become a requirement for registration at camps and will be effected in the 2022 Batch ‘C’ Orientation Course.

Megwa said the fitness test will help the scheme ascertain the health status of corpers and also fish out those who lie about their medical conditions.

He said;

“In order to avail the scheme credible information on their health status and also protect them from exploitation by unscrupulous persons.

“It is pertinent to note that the NYSC Orientation Camp Clinics across the nation are managed by the National Health Insurance Authority with the supervision of consultants from tertiary health institutions.

“In view of the regimentation and physical demands of some activities of the NYSC orientation programme, the management of the scheme introduced presentation of Certificate of Fitness from recognised public health facilities by prospective corps members as a requirement for registration at the orientation camp.

“The essence is to enable camp officials manage those who are not fit to undertake certain activities in the camp. This has been largely misunderstood, leading to extortion of some prospective corps members by fraudulent individuals in their bid to secure such documents some of which may not stand a test of integrity.“

What Tinubu, Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso told INEC about their education, NYSC, occupations

The publication of the personal particulars of candidates for the 2023 elections has been followed by animated discussions among Nigerians on social media

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday, published the particulars of candidates for the 2023 general elections.

The publication has been followed by animated discussions among Nigerians on social media on the academic credentials of some of the presidential candidates.

In the front burner of the discussions are questions around why the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, provided no information on his primary and secondary education.

Stating his occupation as “POLITICIAN,” the 70 years old APC National Leader claimed he obtained a B.Sc degree in Business and Administration from Chicago State University on June 22, 1979 before participating in the compulsory national youth service from November 12, 1982.

Although not seen by PREMIUM TIMES among Mr Tinubu’s published particulars at the INEC office, he swore to an affidavit that his certificates are missing.

“I went on self-exile from October 1994 to October 1998. When I returned I discovered that all my property, including all the documents relating to my qualifications and my certificates in respect of paragraph three above, were looted by unknown persons.

“My house was a target of series of searches by various security agents from the time the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was forced to adjourn following the military takeover of government of 17th November 1993,” the two-term former governor of Lagos State claimed in the court affidavit.

Some Nigerians want to know more about Mr Tinubu’s past than what he revealed to INEC.

Similar concerns were raised over his background when he contested for governor in 1999 and 2003. The late human rights lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi filed a suit asking the courts to compel the police to prosecute Mr Tinubu for perjury and forgery after a petition accused him of those offences in his filings with INEC in 1999.

After the Supreme Court dismissed the suit on the ground that Mr Tinubu had immunity as governor against being prosecuted in court, the Lagos State House of Assembly investigated the matter and absolved Mr Tinubu of the charge of gross misconduct.

Mr Tinubu is considered by many political commentators as the candidate to beat in the 2023 presidential race, the reason for the intense public attention on his candidature.

The former Lagos governor’s spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, did not respond to calls to his phone lines at the time of filing this report when this reporter tried to seek further clarifications on the issue.

Atiku not exempted

PREMIUM TIMES scrutiny of the published documents by INEC picked up a similar thing about two or more candidates.

Despite not being a novice in the contest for president, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, also has a few questions raised about his academic credentials.

Mr Abubakar, who served as vice president from 1999 to 2007, will be hoisting the PDP presidential ticket for the second time in 2023. He had lost to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 election.

Mr Abubakar also did not provide information on his primary education. The

1965 West Africa School Certificate (WASC) result presented by the 75 years old candidate identified the student as Siddiq Abubakar. He also holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.

Before joining politics, Mr Abubakar worked with the Nigeria Custom Service until he retired from the agency in 1989 at the rank of Deputy Director.

Mr Abubakar’s records show that he attended Jada Primary School, Adamawa State, but that information is missing in his published biodata by the INEC.

“Well, I think it is INEC that you should be making those enquiries to. Whatever it is that they published was not in my hands,” Paul Ibe, a spokesperson to Mr Abubakar told PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday.

“I don’t know what was submitted to INEC and what was not. So INEC is in the best position to know what it received and what it did not receive,” he said when asked about lack of information on the candidate’s early education.

His running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, also did not state his primary education in the published documents.

Kwankwaso, Obi

The two candidates are being tipped to give the APC and PDP candidates a run for their money. Unlike Messrs Tinubu and Atiku, Mr Kwankwaso provided full information on his academic credentials.

He bagged his first leaving certificate in 1968 and his secondary school certificate in 1975.

Mr Kwankwaso, 66, has Craft Training Certificate, ND, HND, Post Graduate Diploma, M.Sc and Ph.D, which he recently concluded.

He attached a copy of his provisional Ph.D certificate with his thesis on Design and Construction of Irrigation System in Northern Nigeria.

Before resigning in 1991 to join politics, Mr Kwankwaso had worked at Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency (WRECA) for over 15 years.

Among the four top contenders in the race, he is the only candidate who has served as governor, lawmaker and minister.

Much celebrated in his huge social media fan base, Peter Obi is the candidate of Labour Party (LP) which he joined last month after quitting the PDP.

With a knack for quoting figures/statistics at every given opportunity in any public discourse, the two term governor of Anambra, identified himself as a politician and business executive.

Mr Obi attended primary, secondary and tertiary schools between 1973 and 1984.

Before joining politics, he had worked at Fidelity Bank in Lagos, but he did not stay the years in the INEC published documents.

Mr Obi, 61, is the youngest among the top four presidential candidates.

#Covid19 :NYSC Releases Statement On Corps Members Testing Positive To Coronavirus.

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has given a clarification on reported cases of coronavirus infection in some orientation camps in the country.

The NYSC management in a statement on Monday evening, noted that prospective corps members were all tested before gaining access to the camps and those that tested positive were immediately handed over to the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) for management.

The reaction comes after reports that some corps members in Lagos, Kano and Abuja camps had tested positive for coronavirus.

The NYSC management however submitted that that is not the true case of things as the NCDC is in all the camps and tests all prospective corps members before they are admitted into the camps, hence no cause for alarm as the safety of all including the corps members is of top priority.

“The true position is that no Corps Member in any of the NYSC camp is COVID-19 positive.”

“It is pertinent to add that the NYSC is in collaboration with Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) and the Centre maintains very strong presence in all the NYSC camps nationwide.”

“As a proactive measure, all Prospective Corps Members were tested for COVID-19 before being admitted into the camps. Those that tested positive were handed over to the NCDC for treatment and management.”

“There is no cause for alarm. Both the Scheme and NCDC are up to the task of safeguarding the lives of Corps Members and Camp officials.”
