She said the people were captured in 607,974 poor and vulnerable households across the state.

According to Yakwal, the figure was 300,000 higher than the 2.1 million individuals captured from 524,424 households in April.

She said: “Out of the figure, 1.2 million individuals, representing 52.1 percent are females while 1.1 million or 47.9 percent are males.

“Also, 49,922, representing 2.1 percent of those captured in the register are persons with disabilities.

94. 5 percent of the poor and vulnerable people captured in the register reside in rural areas while only 5.5 percent live in urban areas.”

The coordinator stressed that the State Executive Council had directed the use of the social register as the primary source of data for all interventions in the state.

Yakwal added: “The state government is also working to scale up National Identification Number registration of identified poor and vulnerable individuals in the register to promote inclusion at all levels of social protection delivery in the state.”

On the RRR, the coordinator said 51,181 people had been captured in the urban and semi-urban areas of the state.

She added that about 500 applicants had been sampled for validation.

Troops foil bandits’ attack in Kaduna

The government of Kaduna State has disclosed that troops of Operation Safe Haven have foiled an attack on Gidan Zaki town in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement on Sunday in Kaduna, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said some bandits planned the attack, but were repelled by the prompt action of the troops who were stationed in the Southern Kaduna area.

According to him, the bandits invaded farmlands in the village, and destroyed crops, using cutlasses.

The bandits went on to vandalise the home of a resident of the village. They also damaged a nearby vehicle, before storming a telephone charging shop belonging to another person, carting away telephones and chargers,” he said.

One resident of the village was injured by a bullet during sporadic shooting by the bandits. She was evacuated to a nearby medical facility for treatment”, he added.

The Commissioner said the State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai received the reports with sadness while thanking the troops for their prompt response which halted the attack and prevented its escalation.

Aruwan said investigations into the incident were ongoing to unravel those behind the attack.

Also, the Public Relations Officer, Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the incident, saying it happened at about 3 am on Sunday.

Bandits invade barracks in Kaduna, steal cows owned by army officers

Gunmen suspected to be bandits have invaded the military barracks of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, and carted away a herd of cattle in the early hours of Thursday.

The incident happened around 2:00 am as the gunmen arrived at the barracks and started shooting sporadically in the air to cause panic in the Army community.

Though the exact number of the cattle stolen could not be determined, an eyewitness told SaharaReporters on Thursday evening that the cows would not be less than a hundred in number based on previous experience.

According to the source who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, the cattle were owned by Army officers.

He, therefore, expressed shock that the barracks could be so porous for bandits to attack without any form of resistance.

The source told SaharaReporters the first time it happened was last year and that about 400 cows were taken away by the bandits in what he described as a bloodless attack on the barracks.

Around 2:00 am on Thursday, gunmen invaded where cattle are kept at Jaji barracks in Kaduna here. Those cattle are owned by some military officers. So, they are kept at the Mammy market, inside the barracks at Jaji here. I cannot tell you the number of cows taken by these bandits but before the operation, they were shooting sporadically in the air.

“Even the people outside the barracks heard the gunshots. And this was not the first time. The first time it happened was last year. That one happened close to the Firing Range. They went there and took away all the cattle. About 400 cows were taken away. Some of them (cows) managed to come back to their ranch,” the source said.

When asked if the bandits came with a truck or any vehicle to convey the cattle, the eyewitness said they did not drive any truck.

He said they took the cattle away on foot.

He also lamented that both the military personnel and civilians living in the barracks and the areas surrounding the military base are no longer safe.

“They didn’t come with any vehicle. They would just come on foot and push the cattle away. This is telling us that one day, even, the Army officers in the barracks can be kidnapped. And the barracks are one of the most strategic barracks in the country.

“In the barracks there, there are houses that even foreign Army officers that are taking courses live in. The Jaji barracks are among the largest in the country and if this kind of thing is happening there, that means we are not safe anymore.

There was a time even military officers from African and Asian countries came for courses there. Majors and Captains do come there from different countries. Every graduation, you will notice that about 17 African countries participate. It means that even foreign officers can be abducted. And if this happens, it is a slap on the face of the country.

“I don’t know if the military authorities are doing anything to see how they can tackle the issue. What I want you to know is that even the immediate areas surrounding the barracks are being attacked daily, and nothing is done. Outside the cantonment, barely a kilometre away is not safe,” he said.

Next governor of Kaduna will demolish more houses than me – El-Rufai

Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that his successor would do more demolition of houses than him.

El-Rufai made the remark on Friday while reacting to residents of the state who were allegedly calling him a demolisher and praying for his tenure to end soon.

Speaking when he featured on a radio programme in the state capital, the governor warned residents not to rejoice yet saying the next governor would do more for the development of the state.

According to him, some residents who understand their motives, now appreciate the urban development being executed across the state by his administration.

El-Rufai alleged that some of his critics attacked him for not sharing money to them, stressing that developing the state was worth more than sharing of money.

“When we started working on school construction they said we are not providing roads now we are working on roads they said we are not empowering people.

“If sharing money at night is what they mean by empowering people, they should keep insulting us.

“The masses who we are working for appreciate what we are doing for them.

You know the election is approaching and they see me as a demolisher “Mai rusau” so they think that maybe the next person that will come after me will not demolish but he will demolish more than I do, God willing,” he said.

Aruwan said the position of the Kaduna Government remained the same and that the state would not negotiate with, or pay ransom to bandits, and “any person who claims to do so in any capacity, if found, will be prosecuted accordingly.

Kaduna to end reliance on federal allocations by 2025 – El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said on Thursday the state would stop relying on federal allocations by 2025.

El-Rufai disclosed this to journalists shortly after declaring open the 147th meeting of the state’s Joint Tax Board.

He said the state has been boosting its tax collections and channeling the funds to infrastructure, education, and health care.

The governor said the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) reached N50.9 billion in 2020.

El-Rufai said: “In our last budget, 60 percent of our budget came from the federal account and 40 percent from IGR.

“But the way we are going, with a very hard-working internal revenue service team, in the next four to five years we will get to a point where we will only go to the federation account only out of courtesy not because we need the money.

“We are focused on running the government and doing development projects entirely from tax collection. We don’t want to depend on the federation account, that’s our goal.”

The governor said his administration is determined to show the people that the payment of tax is not a burden but a contribution to the development of the state.

“And when you contribute, you will see the development, you will see the result.

“This result you will see through free education, 12 years of free education not nine years like other states.

“In Kaduna, it is not just basic education, but free education for junior secondary school and senior secondary and primary which is all financed from taxes.

We provide primary health care free to children under the age of five and to all pregnant women. All senior citizens above the age of 70 get free health care, all from taxation,” he added.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the students, comprising of 23 females and 16 males are still in captivity with the bandits demanding N500 million for their release.

This pledge was made via a statement by the Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan.

Aruwan stated that the Kaduna Government acknowledged the efforts of security agencies in the recent rescue of 180 students of the college.

The statement also mentioned the efforts of the military, police, DSS, and other security agencies whose swift intervention prevented the bandits from abducting more persons.

The Kaduna State Government maintains a clear focus at this time, and that is to ensure the safe return of the missing students and to consolidate intelligence gathering and security vigilance towards forestalling possible attempts on other facilities or institutions,” he said.

Aruwan, in an earlier news briefing, said the attack was carried out by a large group of “armed bandits,” adding that the military engaged the attackers and was able to take 180 staff and students to safety.

An unspecified number of the students were injured and are receiving medical attention at a military facility. Security forces “are conducting an operation to track the missing students,” Aruwan said.

Authorities also said that “bandits” were behind the earlier abduction of 279 schoolgirls late last month in the northwest, referring to the groups of armed men who kidnap for money or to press for the release of jailed members of their groups.

Those girls were later freed following negotiations with the government, and it is not known whether a ransom was paid.

Usually, in the history of this state and many other states, the ruling party wins every local government; or may be loses one or two wards. But because of the integrity and commitment of the members and Chairman of the state electoral commission in our first term in office, our commission conducted perhaps, the cleanest and best election at the state level in Nigeria’s history,’’ he added.

El Rufai, who said that he is very proud to have re-nominated virtually all the members of the commission back to the office, implored the commissioners to ‘’continue to set the best example of conducting elections at the state level in Nigeria.”

‘’This state government does not want to appoint interim administrators or Interim Management Committee or any sort of unelected leaders in any local government because it is against the provisions of the constitution.

We want the commission to ensure that elections are conducted before the expiration of the term of office of the current local government chairmen which ends sometime in June. This is why it is necessary to announce the timetable, to give the notice for election.”
