The Kaduna state government says it has received preliminary reports from security agencies on the kidnapping of about 10 students in Kachia Local Government Area.
The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday in Kaduna.
Mr Aruwan said that according to preliminary reports about 10 students of Government Secondary School, Awon (a day secondary school) were kidnapped on Monday.
“The exact location of the incident is yet to be ascertained but detailed reports being awaited will clarify whether the incident occurred within the school premises or elsewhere.
“The government will issue a public statement accordingly, when these reports are received,” he said.
The Defence Headquarters says the troops of Operation Whirl Punch with special forces killed 11 terrorists in Kaduna.
The DHQ spokesman, Maj.-Gen. Musa Danmadami, said this in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the troops on Saturday conducted clearance operations in the terrorists’ enclaves at Bagoma, Rema, Bilugai, Dagara, Sabon Lay, Gagumi, Katakaki and Randagi villages all in Birnin Gwari local council area.
The statement said the terrorists were overpowered by the troops at Kakangi and Katakaki villages during a gunfight, forcing several of them to flee.
According to the statement, troops exploited the “general area” and recovered two AK-47 rifles, two AK-47 magazines, 57 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, seven machetes and six motorcycles.
“The military high command commends troops and encourages the general public to avail troops with credible and timely information on criminal activities,” stated the DHQ.
Six hostages have been released by bandits in Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna State, after they collected 20 mudu (measures) of rice, 20 mudu of beans, 25 litres of red oil, 25 litres of groundnut oil and recharge card of N10,000 as ransom.
The bandits had killed a farmer and abducted 20 persons from their farms in Jangali and Kwaga communities of Birnin-Gwari.
Confirming the release of the hostages yesterday September 29, Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU) chairman Ishaq Usman Kasai, said the bandits have equally told some farming communities to pay 12 million in levies before they would harvest their crops.
Kasai said;
“The four people of Unguwan Liman who were kidnapped on Saturday and one at Unguwan Shekarau were released yesterday Wednesday after payment of 2 million and N500,000, respectively.
“Five farmers kidnapped on Thursday 15/9/2022 at Kurgin Gabas and Sabon-Layi areas have luckily escaped from the kidnappers’ den after spending a week in captivity.
“Regrettably, a farmer was killed at Shiwaka community on Tuesday 27/9/2022 after being tied to a tree; and more than 20 people were kidnapped on Wednesday 28/9/2022.
“The bandits informed some farming communities including Kwaga, Kwanan-Shehu, Unguwan Liman and Unguwan Shekarau to pay levies of N12 million to be allowed to continue harvesting their crops. These communities were given until Friday (today) to meet the conditions, failing which they would kidnap any person found at a farm.
The Union found that these helpless communities have started making contribution based on farm size to meet the condition and the dateline.”
The paramount ruler of the Atyap Chiefdom, Agwatyap, Dominic Yahaya, has raised the alarm that 245 locals have been killed while 623 houses were burnt in attacks within his domain in Zango-Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The monarch stated this on Wednesday at the Kaduna Catholic Social Centre during the commemoration of the International 2022 Peace Day organised by the Liturgy and Social Justice in Kaduna.
The ruler said, “The recurring attacks, which have become most distressful and disturbing as the alleged killers who are known to have lived among the communities, will often call names of their victims to notify them of their mission to kill before committing dastardly acts on the innocent and harmless farmers.
“The genesis, which many considered premeditated, started in early 2019 when isolated individual killings of farmers became rampant, and before we knew what was happening, about 14 of such incidents had occurred.
“This snowballed into a major crisis on June 16, 2020. Thereafter, massive attacks occurred in villages whereby people were killed and houses and property were burnt by herdsmen, which some uninformed people termed as farmer/herders clashes, whereas this narrative has been most painful as the attacks which occurred in the dead of the night left many communities desolate.”
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Kaduna State Peace Commission, Dr Saleh Mamale, while commenting on the International Peace Day, maintained that the socio-economic pursuit of individuals, communities and nations significantly varies over time and space, and the ability and/or inability to manage these diversities is the major driver of peace or violence.
A Kaduna official said that 2,192 primary school teachers including the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Audu Amba, had been dismissed for refusing to sit for the competency test.
Its spokesperson, Hauwa Mohammed, in a statement on Sunday in Kaduna, said the board conducted a competency test for over 30,000 teachers in December 2021.
She said that 2,192 primary school teachers including the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Audu Amba, had been dismissed for refusing to sit for the competency test.
She said that some 165 of the 27,662 teachers that sat for the competency test were also sacked for poor performances.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Kaduna government in 2018 sacked 21,780 teachers who failed a competency test, and replaced them with 25,000 others recruited through vigorous processes.
In December 2021, the board also sacked 233 teachers over alleged possession of fake certificates.
“Following the state government’s resolution for continued assessment of teachers to ensure better delivery of learning outcomes for pupils, KADSUBEB conducted another competency test for the teachers in December 2021.
“The services of teachers who scored below 40 per cent are no longer required and their appointments have been terminated from the Public Service for their poor performances.
“Teachers who scored 75 per cent and above were recognised as those who passed the test and qualified for attending courses in leadership and school management,” she said.
According to her, qualified teachers will be included in Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programmes to enhance their capacities to deliver quality teaching to pupils.
Ms Mohammed said teachers who scored between 40 and 74 per cent did not meet up with the minimum pass mark, adding that they would be given second chance to improve their capacities.
The board, she said, has initiated viable training programmes for teachers under its statutory TPD with support from the state government and development partners.
“The training programmes will be conducted during end of term vacation and in their respective schools, to minimise disruptions of teaching and learning.
“They are also encouraged to complement the government’s efforts and seek personal development for their own good.
“The board is assuring teachers and the public that it remains committed to ensuring their continuous professional development and the improvement of the learning outcomes of pupils and students,” she said.
Reacting, Ibrahim Dalhatu, State Chairman, NUT, dismissed the competency test and the sacking of the affected teachers as “illegal”.
Mr Dalhatu said the union had secured a court order restraining the board from conducting the competency test, adding, however, that it conducted the test without recourse to the rule of law.
He recalled that the union had asked the teachers not to write the examination after learning that the intent was to sack them.
“We warned that any teacher who participates in the illegal examination would not be protected by the union if victimised but some of the teachers went ahead to write the examination out of fear.
“We are not against the conduct of the competency test if due process is followed, but it should not be used as a basis for sacking teachers.
“The competency test should be used to determine teachers’ capacity gap and tailored specific training programmes to improve their capacities,” he said.
When contacted, the NUT National President said he was aware of the development, adding that the National Executive Council of the union would sit on Wednesday, June 22, to come up with a position.

Inhabitants of Adara community in the southern part of Kaduna State have said that about 32 persons lost their lives in an alleged helicopter-aided attack by terrorists, who razed houses, including Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in the area.
Adara leaders said more bodies were discovered in bushes around the villages attacked by terrorists in helicopters.
The National President of Adara Development Association (ADA), Awemi Maisamari, stated, yesterday: “The pogrom against Adara nation rages on. In the latest tragedy, Ungwan Gamu, Dogon Noma, Ungwan Sarki and Maikori villages near Maro in Kajuru Local Council were attacked on Sunday, June 5, 2022.
“The death toll this morning (Wednesday) is 32, as villagers comb surrounding bushes for more bodies. Seven were found this morning decomposing.”
According to him, the attack started around noon and lasted until around 06:00 p.m. unchallenged by the state. It was carried out by Fulani terrorists on 150 motorcycles carrying three armed persons each.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mohammed Jalige, did not respond to telephone calls from The Guardian for comments on the Adara attack.
MEANWHILE, Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU) has told all political parties in Kaduna and the state government not to encourage a Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket in the 2023 general election.
According to the group, the promotion of such tickets by Governor Nasir el-Rufai has divided the people and hindered socio-economic development, noting that Southern Kaduna people will resist any political arrangement devoid of political balance in 2023.
In a statement, yesterday, SOKAPU Political Committee congratulated governorship candidates of the various political parties.
“While we are glad that the events leading to their emergence as candidates were successfully carried out devoid of any form of violence. We look forward to meeting them soon for fruitful deliberations on how we can build bridges in our dear state for development,” the group stated.
Secretary of the committee, Simon Musa, explained: “There has been no better time than now for all parties and both zones to work towards enthroning inclusiveness across the various parts of Kaduna.”
“Despite the tension and animosity prevalent along ethnoreligious divides, the Southern Kaduna people are committed to the welfare and security of all citizens of the state. In this regard, the attention of SOKAPU has been drawn to subtle threats mounted on governorship candidates to appoint their running mates without regard to the ethnoreligious divide in the state.”
Given the spate of endless killings in Kaduna and several other parts of the country, some pastors in Kaduna State, under the banner of Interface Alliance, on Thursday staged a protest in the state.
The pastors, who swarmed the popular Lagos Roundabout in the state capital, demanded the Federal Government to take decisive steps against the terrorists who had continued to terrorize the state in the past few months.
The pastors were utterly dissatisfied with the situation and wanted holistic approach from the government to put an end to the crises.
The convener of the group, Reverend Emmanuel Adebayo, also appealed to the state government to compensate victims of terrorist attacks in the state.
He added that the step would douse the sufferings of the victims and make them get over the psychological trauma they passed through during the attacks.
The essence of our gathering today is to put together what we refer to as ‘Kaduna prays’, a prayer work against insecurity. I am sure everybody knows that Kaduna is one of the states plagued by incidences of banditry and terrorism and various forms of criminality and of late, it has been on the increase.
We believe that the government is doing their best but their best is not good enough. That’s why we have come out to seek for divine intervention concerning the issue of peace and security in Kaduna State and Nigeria at large.
“The government needs to be more proactive. We have been hearing about cry of our governor; he said he has been taken the reports to those concerned; he said they know where they are and that they listen to their telephone conversation but the response from the security agencies are not good enough”, Adebayo said.
A former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, on Friday decried the worsening insecurity in Kaduna State.
Kaduna is currently mired in security crisis with bandits killing and terrorizing people across communities.
The criminals killed at least 34 people including two soldiers during attacks on four communities in two local government areas of the state.
Sani, who reacted to the latest attack by bandits on Twitter, said the terrorists were having a free day in the state and urged the government and the security agencies to show more commitment in the fight against the criminals.
He wrote: “Mass killing and destruction in Giwa Local Government of Kaduna State by terrorists today. A horrific and bloody act of evil in Central Kaduna.
“They kill and spare the lives of those they want, at the time they want.”

The commission also arranged Dauda’s company, MS Seven Nigeria Limited, for alleged complicity in the fraud.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the defendants were arraigned on a two-count charge of fraud before Justice Darius Khobo.
The statement read: “The defendant was arrested by the EFCC during a petition which alleged that in August 2021, the complainant (name withheld) falsely claimed that he was into luxury car importation from the United States.
“After convincing the complainant to buy a car from him, he deposited N70 million into the company’s account for the purchase of a Mercedes Benz S-class 2021 model.
He paid another N194,128,500.00 into the defendant’s company’s account domiciled in another bank for the purchase of a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon and a Rolls Royce.
“The complainant, however, lamented that Dauda had remained unreachable since the payments were made.
“He had pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges against him.
Justice Khobo had granted him bail in the sum of N5,000,000 with a surety who must be a resident of Kaduna and owns a landed property that has a Certificate of Occupancy verifiable by Kaduna Geographical Information Service (KADGIS) and EFCC.
“The case has been adjourned till February 8, 2022, for hearing.”
The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has mandated all public schools in the state to operate a four-day workweek as schools reopen for the second term on Monday, January 10, for the 2021/2022 academic session.
The directive which was dispatched to heads of public schools in the state in a memo signed by the state Commissioner for Education, Halima Lawal, on Sunday, was to align with the government’s recent transition to four-day working week.
In the notice, Lawal notified “all parents, guardians, and the public that the state government has approved January 10 as the resumption date for the 2nd term of the 2021/2022 academic session.”
“The Kaduna State Government wishes to inform parents, guardians and the public that the resumption date for the second term of the 2021/2022 academic session earlier slated for Monday, January 10th, 2021, remains unchanged.
Beginning from Monday, January 10, all public schools are to run a four-day work week to align with government’s new transition to a four-day work week.
“The ministry further advises parents, guardians and students to comply with all public health guidelines by adopting all protective measures against COVID-19.
“Additionally, administrators and proprietors of public and private schools and other learning centres, including Islamiyya and Madrasas, are encouraged to sustain school-based security committees set up to ensure safety of students in schools,” she said.
Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court on Wednesday sentenced one Abba Yahaya Kawu to 10 years imprisonment for forgery.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the convict on a one-count charge of forgery.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwjujaren, who disclosed this in a statement sent to Ripples Nigeria, said Kawu designed and sold forged certificates of the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCUML) to unsuspecting members of the public who desired the document, a statutory requirement for opening bank accounts for Designated Non-financial Institutions and Businesses.
According to the EFCC spokesman, the convict had issued over 500 fake certificates for which he earned over N10, 000 apiece before his arrest.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.
Following his plea, the prosecuting counsel, J. Musa, urged the court to convict him accordingly.

The convict will also forfeit the sum of N 469,000 to the Federal Government.
The Ondo State government on Wednesday ordered all civil servants in the state to take the COVID-19 vaccine latest by November 1.
The Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Segun Odusanya, disclosed this at a meeting with the staff of the ministry in Akure, said the presentation of the COVID-19 vaccination card has become a compulsory requirement for civil servants as workers go to enter their offices from November 1.
He said: “The directive would be enforced as from November 1 with compliance to all the COVID-19 protocols by the civil servants in the state.
The enforcement has become imperative due to the ravaging effects of the pandemic and its attendant morbidity in the state.”
Odusanya said the meeting was the fallout of an earlier meeting with the Head of Service, who directed that any civil servant not vaccinated by November 1 would not be allowed into any state government office.
The permanent secretary added: “The enforcement is a means of protecting the staff because the pandemic, which is not yet over, has a more deadly variant, hence the need to be vaccinated and obey the protocols.”
The Kaduna State government had on Tuesday ordered the civil servants in the state to take the vaccine by October 31.
Justice Hannatu A.L Balogun of Kaduna State High Court on Thursday sentenced one Nehemiah Joel to four months in prison for cybercrime.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Joel on a one-count charge of cyber fraud.
The commission told the court that the convict posed as United Arab Emirate (UAE)-based prostitute to defraud unsuspecting victims, mostly middle-aged men.
The EFCC counsel, M.E Eimonye, said Joel assumed the identity of one Chloe Adler, a white hooker to defraud his victims.
“Part of his gimmick was to request payment for his services upfront before meeting with his clients,” he said.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge.
Following his plea, the prosecution counsel asked the court to convict the defendant accordingly.
However, the defence counsel, O.O Jeremiah, urged the court to temper justice with mercy as the defendant is a student and first-time offender who has shown remorse for his actions.
Justice Balogun sentenced Joel to four months imprisonment or an option of N60,000 fine.
