Father of six rapes 17-year-old daughter in Ogun

Men of the Ogun State Police command have arrested a 46-year-old man, Olusegun Oluwole, for allegedly having carnal knowledge of his daughter at Amolaso, in the Abeokuta area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect’s daughter was asleep when he sneaked into her room and reportedly raped her.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Sunday, said the suspect was arrested following a complaint lodged by the victim at the Ibara Police Station.

Oyeyemi added that the victim, who was accompanied by some So-Safe-Corps’ men, reported that she was sleeping in a room at Amolaso, Abeokuta, when her father raped her around 11.30pm.

He said, “The victim said, having observed that others were fast asleep, the father suddenly grabbed her and forcefully had sex with her with a threat to kill her if she refused to allow him.

“Upon the report, the DPO Ibara division, CSP Bernard Egbondiya, quickly detailed his detectives to the scene, where the suspect was promptly arrested.

“On interrogation, the father of six, who confessed to the crime, pleaded for forgiveness, claiming not to know what came over him when he committed the crime.”

The PPRO, however, said the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspect to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution while the victim was taken to general hospital for medical treatment.

The temple of justice and its famished priests

EVERY country which is on the path to a brighter, better and bigger future needs only to listen to the sound the gavel makes in its temple of justice to divine whether the footfalls speak of progression and retrogression. That divination, felicitous or ominous as it sounds, can tell such a country all it needs to know for the signs scripted in its stars.

Courting the courts: In 1999, Nigeria returned to the shining path of democracy, many years after a military-led diversion raked in disastrous consequences for the country. At hand to administer the constitution and to serve as the threshold of tears where the unjustly treated could cry cathartically against their oppressors were the courts once described by a former Justice of the Supreme Court as the “last hope of the common man”.

While the Nigerian judiciary had largely cowered under the clubs of military dictatorship, the burning hope was that under the plentitude of rectitude and certitude that the beatitudes of democracy bring, the courts would again resume their duties as fearless arbiters.

But even from the beginning, problems were etched into the bench from which justice was to be dispensed, and it was the problem of funds, of money. When money is not used in unobtrusive and inoffensive ways to court justice in court, justice, like a beautiful bride, can get quickly expensive.

What sort of justice can be dispensed from crumbling courtrooms swarming with rats and reptiles, where creaking furniture are home to who-knows-what? What sort of justice can be dispensed from the hearts of ministers left vulnerable to financial inducement?

Calling the shots: Nigeria‘s skewed revenue sharing formula, determined to a large extent by legislations from legislators whose expertise is in self-service and dexterity with the rubber stamp, kowtows to the lavish demands of the executive which has do-nothing ministers as prominent members.

This bilious bromance between the legislature and the executive sees the executive take the largest chunks for itself, and leaving the smaller chunks for the legislature. The judiciary is left with nothing but scraps at the end of the day.

Thus, while a legislator gets millions monthly for doing barely more than observing ample snooze time in the hallowed chambers, the Chief Justice of Nigeria takes home just under N2 million a month for doing far more brutal brainstorming and barnstorming work. The plight of those who also answer ‘My Lord’ at the lower rungs of the judicial ladder in courtrooms thick with darkness and despair is even more concerning.

Clipped wings: In a country where mischief and even malice thickens a lot of the national plot, a lot of premeditation goes into the pay judges get. It is also no coincidence that in 14 years, there has been no increment whatsoever in the remuneration of judges in Nigeria. The calculation when the covens where Nigerians are eaten alive convene must centre a lot around the thoughts that “if the judges are pressed for funds, then they will do as we say”.

That some of the judges continue to be owed their retirement benefits long after they leave office must be interpreted as some form of punishment for the heroic shift they put in in a country trampled under the bootheels of corruption and bad leadership.

So, judges are left to work in difficult conditions under which their independence and impartiality cannot be fully guaranteed. The fact that the judiciary has been systematically starved of funds for many years can only be interpreted as devilishly deliberate. It appears that the guard dogs who mount the gates of justice are deliberately neutered so as to perpetuate their impotency. Or could it have anything to do with how judges are recruited in the country and the fact that many of them sell their birthrights even before same are fully theirs?

Unequal scales: The courts were recently approached to decide on the issue of comparatively poor remuneration of judges in a country where practically everything is poorly done. The National Assembly, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the National Judicial Commission are defendants in a suit where Sebastien Tar, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, is seeking enhanced salaries and emoluments for judges in the country.

A pipe dream?

The battle at the National Industrial Court has only just begun but the court would most likely lean towards the Claimant. When that happens, the question would then be whether the judgement will be enforced to the letter or whether it will be just one more example of a defanged judgement.

In any case, it is only fair that those who are expected to be fair and just while dishing out justice should be fairly remunerated so that while they work, they will not lose their focus to the lure of filthy lucre.

Singer Falz advocates justice for victims of #EndSARS protest

Nigerian recording artiste and activist, Folarin Falana, better known as Falz has taken to his Instagram page to advocate for justice for the victims of the Lekki Tollgate shootout during the #EndSARS protest in October 2020.

Falz who was among the outspoken celebrities during the heat of the #EndSARS protest in 2020 stated that the Nigerian government has failed to punish the perpetrators of the shootout since the incident happened one year ago.

Speaking further via an Instagram post on Friday, October 15, the singer also reacted to the decision of the state Commissioner of Police barring interested persons from staging any #EndSARS remembrance protest.

Falz mentioned in his post that innocent people were killed just because they were asking “not to be killed or brutalized”.

Here is what the rapper published on his Instagram page;

”20:10:20 [update]

They killed innocent souls that were simply asking not to be killed or brutalized.

A year later, no one has been punished yet for those heinous crimes.

A supposed Police Commissioner “warned” against citizens exercising their fundamental human rights. Yes, a Police Commissioner.

A couple of well meaning citizens decided to put together a summit to reflect on last year’s events & honour the lost souls. Event centre pulls out (“instructions from above”)

As I type this, there is already HEAVY police presence at the Lekki toll gate.

Best thing they could come up with is organizing “concerts” to try and distract us from remembering the real heroes in all of this. The people they murdered.

What we will never do, however, is be quiet.

We will NEVER EVER EVER EVER be silenced.

Not today, not on the 20th, not ever.”

Family Of Murdered Akwa Ibom Job-Seeker, Umoren Speaks On Her Death, Getting Justice.

Ukeme Umoren, elder brother of murdered Akwa Ibom job-seeker, Iniubong Umoren, has said the family is certain that justice will be served.

He was speaking to SaharaReporters on the murder of his sister, a 26-year-old graduate of the University of Uyo, who was first kidnapped and raped before she was killed by a suspect who posed as an employer, Frank Ezekiel Akpan.

Akpan, according to the police, has been arrested and has confessed to raping, killing and burying the lady in a shallow grave.

Iniubong had dropped a tweet on her handle last Tuesday seeking a job and got many replies in that regard.

She wrote, “#AkwaIbomTwitter please I’m really in need of a job, something to do to keep mind and soul together while contributing dutifully to the organisation. My location is Uyo, I’m creative, really good at thinking critically and most importantly a fast learner. CV available on request.”

Rather than employ her, it was gathered that Akpan took Iniubong to his house, where he killed her.

There are allegations that Akpan belongs to a syndicate and probably has the backing of influential people.
Many Nigerians have expressed fear that the course of justice might be truncated in the case of Iniubong’s murder amid cries by the family that the remains of the deceased has not been released to them.

But speaking with SaharaReporters on Tuesday, Ukeme said he was certain that justice would be served.

He expressed absolute faith in the police department stating that he is confident the Commissioner of Police will not allow anyone to sweep the case under the carpet.

He said, “The culprit has been arrested and he is at the police station. He has confessed to the crime. We are still on how to get justice for her. You know we met with the commissioner of police, he said the investigation is still going on. I have faith that justice will be served.”

NASS assures justice for victims of alleged SARS abuses – Lawan

The President of Senate, Ahmed Lawan, says the National Assembly (NASS) would ensure justice for victims of alleged abuses by the personnel of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Lawan announced this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

He said the NASS would also ensure that the government fulfills the commitment it has made to the youths agitating for police reform and good governance.

“I want to re-assure our youths that the NASS will collaborate with the Executives to ensure justice for victims of misconduct and rights abuses by personnel of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police.

“In the same vein, to discourage impunity, we will insist that the perpetrators of the alleged abuses be prosecuted and sanctioned as appropriate.

“We will also work with the Executive to ensure that the five-point demands of the #ENDSARS protesters, which the government has committed itself to, are fully implemented.

“In the unfortunate hijack of the protests, hoodlums unleashed horrifying violence, arson, looting and wanton destruction of public and private property in the country,’’ the statement read in part.

According to Lawan, NASS is fully committed to putting the necessary legislation in place for comprehensive reform of the Police to enhance their institutional integrity and efficiency.

“As we seek a path out of this regrettable crisis, my heart goes out to the victims of the reprehensible violence and criminality witnessed in the last few days in many parts of the country.

“I send my condolences to the families of our security and law enforcement agents who have made the supreme sacrifices in the course of their service to their fatherland.

“I call for a thorough investigation of every criminal act that we have witnessed in the past few weeks with a view to bringing to justice all those elements that have callously destroyed public and private properties.’’

The president of the senate also urged the youths, across the country, to join hands with the authorities in bringing an urgent cessation to the violence.

“I call on our patriotic youths to leave the streets as the government has heard their voices and addressing their grievances to avoid unwittingly providing covers for the criminals and fifth columnists in our midst.’’

On those criminal elements unleashing terror on our cities under the guise of the protest, Lawal urged the security agencies to restore law and order across the country and bring the criminals to justice.

In restoring law and order, he charged the security agencies to do it with the utmost restraint.

“While still grappling with the havoc of COVID-19, the country can ill afford yet another epidemic that has now appeared in the form of the lawlessness that is going on.

“I thank all Nigerian leaders and other well-meaning Nigerians for their interventions towards restoring peace and order after the unfortunate degeneration of the protest into chaos and brigandage in many parts of the country.

“In particular, I thank all Nigerians for their patience and understanding in this trying moment in our dear country.

“I thank you all for your wise counsel to the protesting youths to embrace peace and for the government to be open and sincere in addressing the issues that the youths have raised so clearly,’’ Lawal said.
