Teacher handed seven years jail sentence for assaulting student

A 31-year-old teacher, Idowu Daniel has been handed a seven year jail sentence by an Ikeja Special Offences Court, for s*xually assaulting his 16-year-old student.

Ruling on the case on Monday September 19, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo said the prosecution failed to establish the charge of child defilement against the defendant.

This was however because the survivor failed to show up in court during proceedings to testify.

Justice Taiwo who noted that the confessional statement by the defendant, which was made voluntarily, showed that he s*xually assaulted the minor, added that the defendant admitted to fondling the br@st of the victim twice and attempted to have s*x with her but he could not have a penetration because she was a v*rgin.

Taiwo said; “The defendant is hereby convicted on the charge of s*xual assault of a child.

“You are a teacher and you were touching the br@st of your student. You would have gone for life if the victim had come to court to testify.”

Her ex-lover, 39-year-old Geoffrey Springer, who was also arrested, allegedly recorded the encounters and put them on a hard drive.

The dog, which had no visible injuries, was taken to an animal hospital by deputies for a routine examination.

The pair were taken to the Pinellas County Jail and charged with s*xual activity involving animals. Calello posted a $5,000 bond and was released. Springer was also released on his own recognizance.

EU demands probe of alleged harassment of Uganda opposition elements

The European Union has demanded an immediate probe of alleged continued harassment of politicians and civil society actors in Uganda after last week’s general election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the EU expressed concern at the continued suppression of opposition leaders by President Yoweri Museveni’s administration.

Museveni was re-elected for the sixth term in office last week.

“The government of Uganda has been urged henceforth to restrain its security agencies, investigate claims of abuses, and bring to account all those responsible for violations,” the EU Council of Ministers said in the statement.

The EU added that the shutdown of internet disrupted the work of journalists, observers and polling agents expected to monitor the election.

The European body’s reaction came days after heavily armed Ugandan soldiers stationed outside the home of opposition presidential candidate, Bobi Wine, blocked the United States Ambassador in the country from visiting the candidate.
