Gunmen have kidnapped a 4-year-old boy, Oluwadarasimi while his father, Boluwaji Omojola, managed to escape with injuries in Oye Local Government area of Ekiti
The traditional ruler of the community, Owajumu of Omu-Ekiti, Oba Gabriel Ogundeyi, confirmed the incident on Saturday, August 6.
Ogundeyi said the incident happened on Itaji/Ijelu-Ekiti Road at about 6.00 p.m on Friday, August 5, 2022.
The boy was returning from Ayede-Ekiti with his father, Boluwaji Omojola, who managed to escape after sustaining a severe cutlass injury from the abductors; he is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital,” the monarch said.
Ogundeyi said that security operatives and local hunters had since been mobilised to go after the kidnappers to rescue the boy. State Commandant, Ekiti Amotekun Corps, Brig.-Gen., Joe Komolafe (rtd), who confirmed the incident, said;
“The incident happened yesterday Friday evening. My men and other security agents are in the bush looking for the kidnappers and to rescue the boy.” he added.
Four travellers were shot in the early hours of Sunday along Ijabe/Ila road in Osun State by some men bearing arms.
The victims were said to be travelling in a vehicle heading towards Ijabe from Ila-Orangun when some armed men opened fire on them which left four people injured.
However, a suspect was said to have been arrested by men of Osun Amotekun Corps in connection with the shooting.
A top security source, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said that the mission of the men that carried out the shooting was unclear.
Meanwhile, some operatives of Osun Amotekun corps from Odo-Otin and Ila local government areas went after the perpetrators immediately the shooting took place and one person was held.
“The person held is believed to be the leader of the gang involved in the shooting. But their intention is not clear yet,” the source revealed.
When contacted on Monday, the Field Commander, Osun Amotekun Corps, Amitolu Shittu, confirmed the shooting and the arrest of a 52-year-old suspect in connection with the crime.
Shittu said, “The attack occurred very early in the morning on Sunday. Four people were shot. The victims were travelling from Ila towards Ijabe when they were shot.
“Amotekun men from Ila and Odo-Otin local government areas immediately swung into action and arrested a man suspected to be the leader of the gang that carried out the attack. The case has been taken over by the police. The suspect was also handed over to them.”
However, the Osun police command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola could not be reached for comment, as calls to her line rang out and she has not responded to a text message sent to her to seek further clarification on the matter, as of the time of filing this report.
Anambra has witnessed some of the worst attacks in the South-east. The government blames IPOB for the attacks.
Gunmen have killed another man in Nkwelle-Ezunaka community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria’s South-east.
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday at a popular junction in the area.
A resident of the area, Arinze Ajaezu, told PREMIUM TIMES what happened.
He said the gunmen, who stormed the area through Nkwelle Road, zoomed off through Onitsha Road, a different route, after killing the victim.
“We don’t know the identity of the guy. But some (people) are suspecting that he could be a security agent,” he said.
The police spokesperson in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement.
He identified the victim as Ikechukwu Udeozor.
Mr Ikenga said the victim was abducted from his residence on Thursday by gunmen and killed on Monday, four days after.
“Today, May 13, at about 10:20 a.m., police operatives recovered a lifeless body at the roadside by Y- Junction, Nkwelle-Ezunaka. The victim was later identified as Ikechukwu Udeozor,” Mr Ikenga said.
The spokesperson said the police were investigating the incident and that the killers would be arrested.
Worsening insecurity
Security in Nigeria’s South-east has deteriorated with frequent attacks by armed persons in the region.
Anambra State has witnessed some of the worst attacks in the region. The attacks often target security agencies, government officials and facilities.
Mr Okoye was killed on May 21 with his aide, Cyril Chiegboka, six days after they were abducted along Aguluzigbo Road, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.
The Nigerian government has accused outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra of being responsible for some of the deadly attacks in the region. But the group has repeatedly denied their involvement in the attacks.
The separatist group is leading agitation for an independent state of Biafra to be carved out from the South-east and some parts of the South-south Nigeria.
The leader of the secessionist group, Nnamdi Kanu, is detained in Abuja where he is facing trial for terrorism.
Gunmen on Monday night killed five persons during an attack on some communities in Iregwe Chiefdom of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Davidson Malison, who confirmed the attack to Ripples Nigeria on Tuesday evening, said three persons were also injured in the incident.
He added that the hoodlums destroyed vehicles and carted away some motorcycles from the communities.
Malison said: “The gunmen who were identified as herdsmen invaded and attacked the Nzhwerenvi, Kpara, Gero and Mararaban Tipper communities late on Monday night.
“It was an unprovoked attack as there have been no issues between the affected communities and the Fulani people.
They killed five of our people and seriously injured three others. They also destroyed some vehicles and made away with some motorcycles belonging to the indigenes.
“The attack was immediately reported to the police and the Operation Safe Haven while those injured were rushed to the hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.”
The spokesman for the state police command, ASP Ubah Ogaba, confirmed the attack.
Some unknown gunmen on Saturday set fire to the country home of Prof George Obiozor, the President General of apex Igbo social cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Neighbour who is also a former Nigerian ambassador to the United States of America.
The Ohanaeze leader was however not at the house located in Awo-Omanma in the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State when the incident happened.
Gunmen on Monday killed another Mexican journalist, Roberto Toledo, in fresh onslaughts against the media in the North American country.
Toledo was the fourth journalist to be killed by criminals murdered in less than one month.
The journalist, according to his employers, Mexico’s Michoacan State, had received death threats in the past.
The killings had already sparked protests, with press freedom groups urging the government to do more to protect journalists.
Two of those killed in recent weeks, including Toledo, had been part of federal protection programmes for journalists while one was about to join the campaign before he was felled by assassins’ bullets, the rights groups said.
Gunmen on Saturday abducted two students of the Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State.
Eyewitnesses told journalists on Sunday the hoodlums stormed Mararaba, the university’s host community, at about 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, shot sporadically into the air before whisking the victims to an unknown destination.
The spokesman of the state police command, Ramhan Nansel, who confirmed the incident, said the command’s anti-kidnapping unit had been deployed to conduct a thorough search for the victims and rescue them unhurt.
The students were kidnapped on Saturday evening in Mararaba but we did not get any report of the incident until today.
“Our men from the anti-kidnapping unit have been mobilised to conduct a thorough search in bushes and mountains in the area and rescue the victims unhurt,” the spokesman said.
Gunmen on Thursday kidnapped the Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) in Odogbolu local government area of Ogun State, Olamilekan Okunuga.
Eyewitnesses told journalists the youth leader was around Ogere in Ikenne local government area of the state while returning from Ibadan.
The Chairman of the NYCN, Abduljabar Ayelaagbe, who confirmed the incident to journalists on Sunday, said the hoodlums had contacted the victim’s family and demanded N30 million ransom.
The spokesman of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident.
He said one person has been arrested in connection with the abduction of the youth coordinator.
Gunmen on Sunday set ablaze the Department of State Services (DSS) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) offices in Nnewi, Anambra State.
An eyewitness told journalists the gunmen stormed the town in four Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and operated for several hours.
He added two persons who tried to make a video recording of the event were killed by the hoodlums.
“A man, who attempted to do a video recording of the unknown gunmen was said to be shot dead at Eme Court junction area of Nnewi, while another man was said to have been killed at Traffic junction area of the town,” the eyewitness added.
The spokesman of the state police command, Toochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack in a statement in Awka.
He, however, said it was a case of fire incident.
He said: “At about 2:00 p.m., on October 3, 2021, the command received a distress call of a fire incident in Nnewi.
“The police operatives are currently on ground and the area has since been cordoned off. Further details shall be communicated.”
Unknown gunmen on Saturday attacked a farm settlement at Ahun village, Oro-Ago, Ifelodun local government area of Kwara State, and killed a teenager.
The spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Babawale Afolabi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Ilorin, the state capital.
He said two other persons sustained bullet wounds in the attack.
The spokesman said: “On September 26, some community leaders from Ahun farm settlement in Oro-Ago, reported at our Divisional Office in the area, about an attack on their community by unknown gunmen.
The gunmen came in their large numbers and they started shooting sporadically when they entered the community. One Rukayat, a teenager, was killed by a stray bullet.”
Afolabi, however, said the motive behind the attack had not been established, adding; “we have commenced further investigations on the incident.”
Gunmen on Tuesday shot dead an Anglican Church priest identified as Rev. Emeka Merenu in Imo State.
However, unconfirmed reports claimed that the priest was killed by members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the militia wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
A lawmaker representing Nkwerre Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Obinna Okwara, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said Merenu was killed in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to him, the priest was killed over an unfounded allegation that he brought in military men to secure the church and a secondary school under his supervision.
The lawmaker added that the deceased’s vehicle was also set ablaze by the assailants.
The spokesman of the state police command, CSP Mike Abattam, also confirmed the incident.
He said the priest, who hailed from Amorji Agbomiri village in Nkwerre local government area of the state, was murdered in his parsonage at Orsu Iheteukwa, in Orsu LGA.
Abattam said the command would release an official statement after conducting preliminary investigations on the incident.
Gunmen in the early hours of Friday abducted a man, Abdullahi Benda, and his 23-year-old son, Jibrin Abdullahi Benda at Yangoji village in Kwali Area council of Abuja.
Residents of the community told journalists the hoodlums scaled the fence into the victims’ house, destroyed the doors, and went into one of the rooms in the building before whisking the man and his son to an unknown location.
The Spokesman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Daniel Y. Ndiparya, confirmed the incident.
He said: “Yes, we are aware and efforts are being made by the command to rescue the victims.”
Unknown gunmen allegedly shot dead two policemen at a checkpoint in Kabba, headquarters of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi state.
An eyewitness stated that the policemen were shot at the Origa checkpoint along Kabba- Iyara road at about 5p.m on Monday.
The gunmen were said to be passing by in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), when the policemen waved them down for a routine check.
It was then that they opened fire on both officers, and sped off afterwards, leaving them dead.
The eyewitness added that three other policemen managed to escape. This was as they sustained different injuries and had to shoot indiscriminately in order to escape.
It was also gathered that the affected policemen were from the newly-created Kabba police B divisional headquarters.
However, the robbers were said to be coming from the Ekiti axis and were probably heading towards Abuja en route Kabba before the incident occured.
The remains of the two policemen were said to have been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital in Kabba, while the injured are said to be undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
When contacted for his reaction, the police public relations officer, William Aya could not be reached as of the time of filing the report.
Gunmen on Thursday, attacked Ojoto Police station in Idemili South local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to Daily Post, one Police Inspector was killed in the attack which took place in the afternoon.
It was gathered that policemen on duty, however, prevented the attackers from setting the station on fire.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, told Daily Post that he was planning to visit the area immediately and he would respond after the trip.
But a Senior Police Officer in the state, who spoke with journalists in confidence, confirmed the attack on the police station, adding “we lost one Inspector today again.”
Unknown gunmen have killed Stanley Nnaji, a former judge of the Enugu state high court.
Nnaji was shot dead on Sunday evening in Enugu while driving in a black Mercedes Benz SUV.
A video posted on Twitter by an eyewitness showed how the assailants double-crossed the judge’s car, dragged him out and shot him.
The incident was said to have happened beside the Enugu Diagnostics Centre, by Ebeano Tunnel.
Commissioner of police in the state, Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu confirmed the incident, and said he has ordered a manhunt for the gunmen.
In a statement signed by Daniel Ndukwe, spokesperson of the police command, the commissioner said: “The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by doctors on duty and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.”
Unknown gunmen on Tuesday, May 11 set ablaze the office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Amaekpu Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia state.
The State Commandant of NDLEA, Bamidele Akingbade, confirmed the incident and disclosed that it happened around 3 am.
According to him, the office was “partially” razed and no documents were torched as they were inside a fire-prove safe.
The state police spokesman, Godfrey Ogbonna, said the force has commenced a full probe into the incident, adding that there was no casualty from the razing of the INEC office.
The people in the neighbourhood said the attack was carried out by unknown miscreants,” .
“There was no casualty because security men guarding the office ran into the 14 Army Brigade barracks for safety, when the attackers arrived at the place’‘, he said.

Gunmen on Sunday kidnapped Mrs. Funmilola Osalusi, wife of the late Surveyor-General of Ekiti State, Felix Oladapo Osalusi, in Ado-Ekiti.
Osalusi, who is a staff of Ado-Ekiti of Local Government Area of the state, was abducted in front of her residence at about 9:20 p.m. on Sunday and whisked to an unknown location.
The spokesman of the state police command, Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday, said the woman was tricked by the gunmen who ferried her away in their car.
He said: “The armed men, numbering three, were said to have knocked the gate of the victim’s residence and tricked her into coming outside the house.
“She came out of the gate to ascertain the identities of the ‘guests’ and the gunmen quietly took her away in their vehicle.”
He said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Mobayo, has deployed detectives to suspected bushes to rescue the woman.
He added that the police detectives would work with operatives of Amotekun Corps, hunters, and other stakeholders to rescue the widow from captivity.
