APC accuses Gov Obaseki of budget padding

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State on Sunday accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of budget padding.

In a statement issued by its Assistant Publicity Secretary in the state, Victor Ofure Osehobo, the APC claimed that the projects listed by the governor for execution in the 2022 budget proposal were duplicated.

The party described the appropriation bill as unrealistic.

Obaseki presented the Edo State 2022 budget proposal of N214.2b to the Assembly on December 1.

APC said: “On a closer look, the 2022 Obaseki budget proposal, is completely unrealistic and duplicitously embellished with impractical predictions, a development that confirms fears by many Edo people that this administration is obviously still trying unsuccessfully to lay a foundation for governance as Obaseki himself declared five years on!

The proposal again illustrates that Governor Obaseki has perfected the art of wasting Edo State’s funds on frivolities. How does he explain the allocation of N21 billion for government buildings and another N15 billion to enhance the work environment?

As expected, the Obaseki 2022 estimates are padded and this can be deduced from such spurious allocations as providing social and youth development, N5billion; technology enhancement, N7.6billion and effective fiscal and business-friendly regulatory policies, N4.5billion.

“The proposal includes water, which is non-existent and which the government has never attempted to provide anywhere in the state, for N1.2billion. This is as ridiculous as the provision of N1.5billion for citizen re-orientation and social protection, and N9.2billion for public safety and security, which are suspicious and questionable, and call for answers.”

In surprise move, Oshiomhole apologises to Gov Obaseki

Former Governor of Edo State and immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has apologised to incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for any problems their rivalry may have caused.

This followed the recent victory of Obaseki at the Supreme Court which cleared him of alleged certificate forgery.

In a surprise letter addressed to Obaseki on Monday, Oshiomole regretted the crisis that the court case filed by the APC candidate in the 2020 governorship election, Pastor Ize Iyamu, had caused in the state, calling it an unfortunate occurrence which should not have happened.

While congratulating Obaseki, Oshiomole urged him to be magnanimous in victory as governor of all Edo people, regardless of political leanings.

Congratulations on your victory at the Supreme Court which has effectively laid to rest all matters arising from the last election,” part of the letter reads.

“As I had repeatedly reminded you during our several meetings, our relationship has through the years developed beyond being friends to being brothers of different parents.

“Whatever happened was unfortunate and I believe God has a reason for everything.

I have put all behind me and moved on. As I have consistently advised, please be magnanimous in victory.

“You are the governor of all Edo people regardless of political leanings.

“Once again, congratulations, Excellency! Please, accept the renewed assurances of my very best wishes and high regards.”

In the build up to the last election in the state, Oshiomhole and his then political godson, Obaseki had fallen out, a situation that pushed Obaseki to leave the APC, and pitched his tent with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under which he won his re-election bid.

Gov Obaseki vows to flush out killer herdsmen from Edo forests

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has vowed that his government will “comb every forest” in the state to flush out killer herdsmen and other criminals in the state.

Obaseki disclosed this on Wednesday when he led heads of security agencies in the state on a fact-finding tour of Ugo community in Orhionmwon local government area where some families allegedly lost their loved ones to herdsmen attacks.

The governor who praised the residents of the area for not taking the laws into their hands in the face of provocation by the herdsmen, said the people of the state were not against anyone who conducts their business “legally and lawfully.”

I am here with the Commissioner of Police, Philip Agbadu, and other heads of security agencies in the state to commiserate with you.

“This is to tell you how seriously we take what has happened in Ugo.

“We are here first to commiserate with you and to let you know that we feel your pains and that as a government, we are very concerned and worried.

“The principal role of any government is to protect the lives and property of citizens. We are here to find out for ourselves what actually happened and to make certain decisions.

I know this is not the first time it has happened, but we want to make sure that this sort of thing does not happen again in this community.

“I want to thank you for being law-abiding citizens and not taking laws into your hands.

“I want to assure you that an operation will be carried out. I am very happy with the number of vigilantes I see in the community, which means that you have enough information.

“We are not against the presence of anybody who wants to come and do business here.

Whether they want to come and herd their cattle or they want to do other business here, you are not against them.

“we are only saying that, if they want to come and graze, they must do it legally and lawfully,” the governor said while addressing the residents.
