One killed in Anambra tanker accident- FRSC

A man has been confirmed dead in an involving five vehicles at Odumodu Junction, Umunya, by Nteje-Awka Expressway in Anambra.

Adeoye Irelewuyi, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, confirmed the incident in Awka on Saturday.

Mr Irelewuyi said that the accident, which occurred at about 12:40 p.m., was caused by overspeeding.

He said that the multiple crashes involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with registration number ENU 32 XD and a loaded tanker with registration number LSD 339 XA.

According to him, a Toyota Yaris car, with registration number KSF 646 BZ, another tanker with number BAU 305 ZE and a Toyota Camry car with registration number ABN 64 JA were also involved in the accident.

He said that the driver of the loaded tanker lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speeding and rammed into a vehicle to cause a pile-up with other vehicles.

“Out of the 26 persons, including 20 male adults and 6 female adults involved in the crash, 12 sustained injuries, the driver of the Toyota Yaris car was killed while 13 others were rescued unhurt.

“FRSC rescue team rushed the victims to Boromi hospital, Onitsha, and Divine Favour hospital, Umunya, while efforts are being made to remove the body of the dead victim trapped under the tanker,” he said.

The sector commander said that the state Fire Service was on ground to ensure prompt management of any form of fire outbreak since the tanker was loaded with PMS.

He said that FRSC personnel were controlling traffic and ensuring that the obstruction caused by the crash was cleared.

While condoling with the family of the dead, Mr Irelewuyi warned motorists to desist from speeding and ensure they drive within minimum safe speed to save their lives and those of other road users.

FRSC announces fresh traffic diversion on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a fresh traffic diversion on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway due to the ongoing construction on the highway.

This is contained in a statement by FRSC spokesman Bisi Kazeem on Monday, stating that the traffic had been diverted from linking the expressway at New Garage Lagos.

It said the traffic from Isheri Olowora passing through River Valley Estate was to link the expressway.

“Inward Lagos has been diverted to pass through Babcock College, opposite Enyo filling station, to link the expressway and drive into Lagos. Alternatively, they could pass through Ojodu and make a U-turn in front of FRSC Ojodu to link the expressways at BRT Bus-stop,” said the FRSC.

The statement added that its corps marshal, Dauda Biu, directed the FRSC commands along the corridor to ensure that gridlock arising from diversion is minimised.

Mr Biu also urged the motorists along the route to exercise maximum patience and cooperate with the law enforcement agencies on the routes.

Road crashes claim over 40,000 lives annually in Nigeria – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says over 40,000 people die annually as a result of road crashes in Nigeria.

Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu spoke on Monday May 15, in Abuja during activities marking the 7th United Nations Global Road Safety Week.

He said that these facts were the unholy statistics of Road Traffic Crashes and injuries which were a leading cause of death and disability.

He also said that 1.3 million people were killed and as many as 50 million people get injured each year globally.

According to him, there is no greater threat to people, aged 5-29 years than Road Traffic Crashes, as one in every four deaths occurs among pedestrians and cyclists.

“In Nigeria, over 40,000 persons die annually as a result of this avoidable scourge,“ he said. The FRSC boss said that the United Nations had developed a global plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. He said that it reflected an ambitious target to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries, which would be by 50 per cent by 2030. Biu said that the 2023 edition of the event with the theme, ‘’Sustainable Transport‘’ is slated for Monday to Sunday.

He said,

“FRSC is partnering with the World Health Organisation, Federal Ministry of Health and United Nations Decade of Action on Road Safety and Injury Prevention to mark the event with various activities.

According to him, the need to take action to ensure safe roads, vehicles, and behaviours as well as to improve emergency care is paramount.

“The 7th UN Global Road Safety Week is focusing on sustainable transport with the slogan #RethinkMobility, which necessitates the urgent need to shift to walking, cycling, and using public transport.

“The key messages of this year’s event centre on the need for governments and their partners to rethink mobility.

“Ensuring safety must be at the core of efforts to re-imagine mobility and thus road networks must be designed with the most-at-risk in mind, “he said.

The Corps Marshal, however, called on government at all levels and partners to rethink mobility with a mindset of providing access to safe and affordable mobility systems for all.

Biu stressed the need for government to make available accessible, resilient, low and sustainable mobility systems to create livable cities that would fulfill the mobility needs of all.

This, he said was to ensure safety at all cost, adding that the road network must be designed in consideration of the vulnerable road users who were the most at risk in mind.

He noted that this would ensure that they feel safe walking and cycling, adding that this would further promote good health, sustainable cities, and equitable society.

Meanwhile, the Focal Person/Country representative, UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, Prof. Sydney Ibeanusi, said that government would continue to put the issue of road safety on the front burner.

Ibeanusi said that Nigeria had a better system, saying “what we want to show the world was that the system actually exists.

“Nigeria has been chosen as a country to improve cycling, and Abuja has been chosen as one of the five states globally.

This is for a project implementation to encourage cycling and we will not relent in our efforts,“ he said.

Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: FRSC issues traffic alert for travellers

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a traffic advisory for travellers using the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to explore alternative routes due to a crash along the road.

FRSC spokesman Bisi Kazeem disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

“This is, however, not only for the outward Lagos section where the RTC occurred alone but also the inward Lagos section as well. All road users going into and out of Lagos are therefore advised to explore alternative routes,” said the statement.

It added,

“Such routes include Ikorodu through Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, and Epe for Lagos-bound vehicles,” advising some to ply Abeokuta through Sagamu Interchange “as well for their own good.”

The statement said the crash involving a tanker occurred in the early hours of Sunday under the Ibafo pedestrian bridge on the outward Lagos section of the expressway.

It said FRSC officers and security agents had been on top of the situation since the crash.

The FRSC added that the content of the tanker had been trans-loaded into another one while Ogun firefighters were on the ground to forestall any fire outbreaks.

“Unfortunately, some inpatient drivers who choose to drive against the flow of traffic from all available exit points have done so, thereby causing traffic jams,” the FRSC statement explained.

FRSC begins clampdown on drivers without licence

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will partner with other sister traffic agencies in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to clamp down on drivers without licence.

The Sector Commander, FRSC FCT command, Danlami Abdul, stated this at a news conference in Abuja on Friday.Mr Abdul said that the corps was concerned over the large number of motorists driving without licence in the FCT.

He disclosed that over 2,000 uncollected driver’s licence were at the centres.He said it was discovered during the just concluded general election that most of the drivers engaged to transport election materials had no valid licence.

“This is a big threat to the security of our dear nation. Motorists need to drive with the assurance of their licence with them as this will not only protect them but also the passengers.

“We will partner with our traffic agencies in the FCT to clampdown on drivers without licence as the FRSC will not tolerate this again,” he said.

The sector commander pointed out that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, has directed the sector to start a special enlightenment to enable applicants collect their licences at the FRSC centre.

The FRSC boss said that the FCT security council had also directed relevant authorities to take urgent steps and restore sanity on its roads, especially along Airport Road.

According to him, adequate personnel and logistics have been deployed to those identified routes to check the excesses of motorists, especially commercial drivers.

Mr Abdul however, assured Nigerians that the sector would continue to work with the transport unions and other stakeholders in the sector.

He added that this would be for effective traffic management in the six area councils of the territory.

FRSC denies using POS for payment of fines

The Federal Road Safety Corps has denied the use of Point of Sale machines to receive payment for fines of traffic offenses on patrol points.

This was contained in a statement signed and made available by the Corps Spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, on Thursday November 10.

FRSC explained that rather, they make use of a digitalised E-ticketing device to enhance ease of doing business.

The statement read in part,

“As an ISO certified organisation with global recognition for lead role in road safety administration and traffic management, the Corps has over the years developed transformational initiatives focused on People, Processes and Technology.

This development is strategic to the introduction of technology into its operations to fade out the use of booking sheet which is a manual way of recording traffic offenders information and replace it with a digital booking device.

“In addition to the above and for better clarification on this technology, the Corps wishes to let the public know that the E-Tablet is a three in one android device that was brought into the operational front in compliance with global best practices on electronic ticketing.

“The introduction of the device targets at improving robust data collection and speeding up on-the-spot synchronisation of traffic offenders information into the national database.

The device is a one stop shop for verification of the national driver’s license and the vehicle number plate as well as other FRSC products and services.

“The Acting Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, is by this medium reiterating that the motoring public should note that the Corps does not use POS machines but a digitalised E-ticketing device which at the moment enhances ease of doing business.”

Avoid night travels in ‘ember’ months, FRSC warns

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun Command, on Saturday warned motorists against excessive speed and night travelling to stem road crashes during the ‘ember’ Months.

The FRSC sector commander, Mr Ahmed Umar, gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota, Ogun.

Umar noted that speed, night travelling and nonchalant attitude of drivers were the major causes of crashes during the Ember Months.

The sector commander said that the erroneous belief that the evil in the ember months caused crashes was not true.

Umar added that the increase in mobility, activities and movement of people also caused some of the crashes during the period.

Speaking in the same vein during the annual ‘ember months campaign,’ Anambra State sector commander, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, said that the essence of the campaign was to educate motorists on safe driving.

The Corps Marshal’s Walk, held in Awka, was attended by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Man o’ War, Sports Commission, Footballers’ Association, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other FRSC allies.

The walk had the theme, ‘Walking for Safe, Healthy and Liveable Anambra.’

FRSC begins free vehicle inspection Thursday

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Command, has said it would commence a four-day vehicle inspection starting from Thursday, June 23 to Sunday, June 26, 2022.

The command said it had concluded arrangements to carry out the exercise which would be its second quarter free safety checks on vehicles across all FRSC formations in the state.

It noted that the effort is to prevent breakdown of vehicles across the state, adding that the exercise would assist motorists detect different faults in their vehicles.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed that at the end of the initiative, a checklist ticket would be issued to encourage motorists fix any defects detected in their vehicles afterwards.

Ogungbemide, who also urged motorists to always comply with traffic rules and regulations, made this known in a statement by the Command’s Public Education Officer, Olabisi Sonubi, on Tuesday.

He further explained that the exercise would include vehicles parked at worship centres and motor parks.

Ogungbemide said, “As part of FRSC’s corporate social responsibility activities lined up  to forestall incessant breakdown of vehicles on the road, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Sector Command has concluded arrangements to carry out its second quarter free safety checks on vehicles within the state.

“The exercise is expected to start from Thursday, June 23 to Sunday June 26, 2022 simultaneously in all FRSC formations across Lagos.

“The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, said all commands within the state will commence the four-day free exercise from June 24 to assist motorists in detecting faults in their vehicles. Ogungbemide said the exercise is an initiative of the Corps and a checklist ticket will be issued at the end for follow-up and to encourage the drivers fix any defect discovered in the process.

“He further stated that the operation will be carried out by operatives including Special Marshals throughout the duration of the exercise as vehicles stopped will not be issued tickets of offence except for crash causing offences.

“The exercise will also include checking of vehicles parked at worship centres and motor parks. Ogungbemide also advised motorists plying the roads to always obey traffic rules and regulations.”

FRSC cautions against fake job recruitment agents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned job-seekers against online fraudsters posing as its recruitment agents.

This is contained in a statement by Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem on Thursday in Abuja.

Kazeem said the clarification became necessary following desperate efforts by fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting job seekers.

He said the attention of the FRSC had been drawn to an online publication misinforming the public about the release of shortlisted names for recruitment.

“This is to let the public know that the corps is presently not recruiting neither is there any shortlisted candidates list published on any platform whatsoever.

Our recruitment processes have always been transparent, credible, and made public through adequate placements of advertorials and notifications on all available media platforms.

“This includes our website: www.frsc.gov.ng, our social media handles, and the National Traffic Radio 107.1FM,’’ he said.

Kazeem advised members of the public “to desist from any form of engagement with the purveyors of misinformation and outright disinformation as the corps will not be liable should anyone fall victim’’.
