Court jails fake lawyer in Lagos

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday March 23, 2022 secured the conviction of one Emmanuel Adekeye Adekola before Justice Sherifat Solebo of a Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos for offence bordering on impersonation.

Operatives of the EFCC had on January 11, 2022 arrested him when he came to the Lagos Command of the Commission posing as a lawyer to secure the bail of a suspected fraudster who was in the Commission’s custody.

Nemesis caught up with him, when investigators dug in further to verify the documents he tendered to secure the bail.

A search at his residence unearthed several forged documents dating back to 2005, including forged Lagos State University and Kwara State College of Education documents.

He had claimed to be the owner of “A.A. Emmanuel & Co. Chambers”, which he had been using to perpetrate fraud until his arrest.

Following conclusion of investigations, he was charged with an amended one count.

He chose not to waste the time of the Court as he pleaded “guilty” to the charge.

Thereafter, Justice Solebo sentenced him to 12 months in prison without an option of fine

He was also ordered to, upon completion of the jail-term, report to the EFCC where he should sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour and never to present himself as a lawyer again.

Fake lawyer with 10 years experience arrested while defending client in court

One Adebowale Adeola Babatunde who has been parading himself as a legal practitioner, has been arrested.

He was nabbed when he presented himself as a counsel before a Magistrate Court in Osogbo, Osun State.

It was gathered that the fake lawyer has been practicing for over 10 years. He was charged by Police in a case file number: MOS/152C/2021.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, Osogbo branch, Dawood Ajetunmobi said the Ministry of Justice has taken over the case from the police after the union’s requested it to do so.

Babatunde had on March 10, 2021, appeared before Magistrate A. A Adeyeba to move a motion on behalf of his client, but the way and manner he conducted himself in the court raised suspicion which infuriated one of the lawyers in the court.

The lawyer, O.U Yussuf requested the court through an oral application to make enquiries about the status of Babatunde as a lawyer.

The magistrate gave a prompt order for the arrest of the defendant.

Meanwhile, the trial of the defendant which was supposed to come up on Wednesday, 8, September 2021 before the Osogbo Chief Magistrate A.K Ajala was stalled due to the absence of the fake lawyer.

In his ruling, Magistrate Ajala refused the prosecutor’s prayer and adjourned the matter to September 24, 2021 for fresh arraignment since the matter is coming up before him for the first time.

Police arrest fake lawyer who appeared in Ogun court

A fake legal practitioner, Azeez Agboola who appeared in a Magistrate’s Court has been arrested by the police in Ogun.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi in the state, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a statement on Thursday.

The 50-year-old suspect, a resident of Oko Afor area of Badagry in Lagos State, was arrested following suspicious over his presentation while appearing as a counsel before Chief Magistrate B.I. Ilo at the Chief Magistrate Court in the Agbara of Ogun State.

“Upon his arrest, the suspect was personally interrogated by the Divisional Police Officer (Agbara Division), Superintendent of Police Dahiru Saleh, and he confessed that though he read law in the university, he has not been called to bar since he has not passed the law school examination,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun has ordered that the suspect be charged to court as soon as possible.
