A Comedian, Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, was on Saturday arrested by the Lagos State Police Command over the #OccupyLekkiTollGate.

Though details of his arrest are still sketchy, a friend of the comedian said he was arrested at the Lekki Tollgate.

“He was harassed as well, they picked him up at the toll plaza and was put inside their Black Maria vehicle,” he said.

The plan to hold #OccupyLekkiTollGate protest started after the controversial ruling of the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry to reopen the Lekki toll gate.

The panel, headed by Doris Okuwobi, a retired judge, on Saturday, ruled in favour of the Lekki Concession Company, LCC, to repossess the toll plaza for repairs and insurance claims.

The ruling was supported by five members out of the nine-man panel, with four other members, including Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and the youth representatives opposing the ruling.

The police have also arrested about 20 other protesters at the toll gate on Saturday.

Doctor Examines Sowore’s Health In Custody After Police Brutality

The personal physician to human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has arrived at the headquarters of the Intelligence Response Team in Guzape, Abuja, formerly used as the Special Anti-Robbery Squad office. 

The doctor arrived at the detention facility to carry out a medical examination on him following the injuries inflicted on him by the police.
Armed policemen had on New Year’s Eve brutalised and arrested Sowore, alongside four others.

They inflicted injuries on him, with a deep cut on his nose bleeding profusely.

One of those arrested with him, Michael, was also injured in the mouth during the incident.

The activists were said to have written their statements but according to sources, the police claimed they were still studying the contents as at the time of writing this report. 

It is not yet clear what offence the police are planning to file against the activists.

Many Nigerians have condemned the police for using brutal force in an attempt to arrest innocent and unarmed Nigerian citizens who chose to celebrate the crossover into the New Year with a candlelight procession.

Despite Evidence, IGP Denies Amnesty International Report, Says Police Officers Never Used Force On #EndSARS Protesters.

Mohammed Adamu, Inspector-General of Police, has said that his officers did not use force on peaceful #EndSARS protesters, rejecting a report from Amnesty International that over the issue.He made the denial in a statement on Friday.

Adamu said, “During the protests, officers of the Force used legitimate means to ensure that the protests were carried out in a peaceful manner and in most cases, physically protected and walked side-by-side with the protesters.

“Even when the protests turned violent in some parts of the country, the officers still maintained utmost restraint and did not use excessive force in managing the situations.

“Available Reports show that 22 police personnel were extra-judicially killed by some rampaging protesters and scores injured during the protests. Many of the injured personnel are in life-threatening conditions at the hospitals.

“205 police stations and formations including other critical private and public infrastructure were also damaged by a section of the protesters.

“Despite these unprovoked attacks, our police officers never resorted to use of unlawful force or shooting at the protesters as alleged in the report.

“It is also beggars imagination that Amnesty International failed to mention or pay tribute to Police officers who were gruesomely murdered during the protests while serving their fatherland.

“The Force decries the discriminatory tendencies exhibited by Amnesty International as seen in the report. One wonders if in the estimation of Amnesty International, police officers are not also human beings equally entitled to the protection of their fundamental rights to life and dignity of human person.”

Lagos state governor has imposed a 24hour curfew.

The Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has imposed a 24hour curfew on all parts of Lagos state. He made this known via his Twitter account earlier today. Below are the his statements;

Dear Lagosians,

I have watched with shock how what began as a peaceful #EndSARS protest has degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society. Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella

… of these protests to unleash mayhem on our state. As a government that is alive to its responsibility and has shown a commitment to the movement #ENDSARS, we will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state.

I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4pm today, 20th October,2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders must be found on the streets.

We will meet in court.- Former presidential aspirant threatens C.E.O of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, for supporting “END SARS” protest.

During the late hours of yesterday , the co-founder and C.E.O of Twitter, Jack Dorsey solicited for support towards the ongoing “end sars” protest in Nigeria.

He did this through his verified Twitter account and of course, this caused a lot of controversial comments on Twitter. Many Nigerians praised him for showing his concern for Nigerian youths , while others criticised his action.

Jack wrote ;

“Donate via #Bitcoin to help #ENDSARS.”

However, amongst those who criticised Jack Dorsey , is a former presidential aspirant for the 2019 presidential election and C.E.O of IPI group limited, Adam Garba.

Adamu Garba replied Jack Dorsey by tweeting the following statements;

“Dear @jack, It’ll do you a lot more good if you stay away from Nigerian Politics. You should know that the so-called #EndSARS protest have transformed into political agitation, capable of breaking law & order in our country. You should not be a moral & financial sponsor to this.”

“This is Nigeria, most of the demands initially presented was attended to by the responsible authorities. SARS no longer exist in this country. Your support for a disbanded entity was a needless interference. We cannot allow killings again in Nigeria in the name of protests.”

“I understand that this may play well to your business, you have more content, more people & more activity on your platform, but to us is about life, peace & security of our dear Country, we cannot allow you to be part of the people sponsoring disorder. We need peace & prosperity.”

His imperial majesty , Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has made his grievances about the police brutality in Nigeria known via his Twitter account.

He stated the following;

“I understand your plight, my 25 year old daughter had a nasty experience with SARS, almost losing her life.”

“On her way to the airport, she was stopped and terribly ransacked and surrounded by fully armed plain clothes policemen in a bus, detained for close to 30mins of thorough questioning.”

“Imagine a young female for that matter, all her belongings completely searched all because she was with a laptop on an official assignment from her office in lagos. I can only imagine the countless ones that have lost their lives from such ordeals, may their souls rest in peace.”

Oyo state governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has spoken regarding the police brutality on “END SARS” protesters in Ogbomosho.

He made the following statements;

I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of one of our children, Jimoh Isiaka, who was shot during the ENDSARS protest in Ogbomoso. He later died at Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, earlier today.

Also, at this same protest, Abdulrasaq Olawale, Oluwadamilare Gbolohunmi, and five other persons sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

This situation is highly regrettable. I have contacted the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State, Nwachukwu Enwonwu, and other relevant agencies, and investigations into what led to the unfortunate incident are still ongoing.

I pray that God grants the parents of Jimoh Isiaka the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.

The ENDSARS protests are a strong indicator of a systemic failure. It is a failure on the part of those who have been constitutionally empowered to protect the citizens.

It again calls into question why State Governors are called Chief Security Officers of their state whereas, they do not have the necessary powers to control the police force.

I will be paying a personal visit to the family of Jimoh Isiaka and I promise to pursue the investigations to a logical conclusion.

Peaceful protests are a big part of our democratic process. The right to freedom of speech and assembly are guaranteed by our Constitution, and I will never support any attempt to rob citizens of their fundamental human rights.

I call on all residents of Oyo State to please remain calm. I also call on the Police to allow residents of Oyo State protest peacefully without fear of being assaulted.

Again, I express my deepest sympathies to the family of Jimoh Isiaka, may his soul rest in peace.
