Nigerian music executive, Tunji Balogun joins Def Jam as CEO

Nigerian Music Executive and former VP of A&R at RCA, Tunji Balogun has joined Def Jam Records as CEO.

According to Variety, Balogun was hired by Def Jam after the music giant named Nicki Farag, a promotion veteran, as its executive VP and general manager.

He will succeed Paul Rosenberg, Eminem’s long-time manager, who joined the label in 2018 and left two years later to remain president of Shady Records, Eminem’s joint venture with UMG’s Interscope Geffen A&M.

Balogun’s exit from RCA comes on the heels of the appointment of Columbia Records’ Imran Majid and Justin Eshak as co-CEOs of UMG’s Island Records in a deal to take effect from January 2022

RCA hosts musicians of global repute like Wizkid and Chris Brown while Def Jam boasts of hitmakers such as BTS, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Kanye West.

Balogun joined RCA in 2015 after working seven-and-a-half years at Interscope. The A&R executive was involved in the signing of musicians like Khalid, Brockhampton, Normani, and Bryson Tiller.

In 2018, Balogun co-founded the label Keep Cool, a joint venture with RCA, alongside Courtney Stewart, Jon Tanners, and Jared Sherman. He was elevated to EVP that year.

Airtel Africa appoints former Coca-Cola CEO to replace MD

Former Coca-Cola Nigeria head, Olusegun Ogunsanya, has been appointed Managing Director of Airtel Africa to replace Raghunath Mandava.

Mandava had informed the board of Airtel Africa of his plan to retire September 30, 2021, so Ogundanya will take over from October 1, 2021, bringing his business management experience in banking, consumer goods and telecoms.

Ogundanya was also the Managing Director of Nigerian Bottling Company and group head of retail banking operations at Ecobank. He had joined Airtel to head the Nigerian subsidiary this year.

Speaking on his appointment, Ogunsanya said, “On a personal note, as an African, I feel honoured to have the opportunity to lead a Group that continues to make a difference to millions of people, bridge the digital divide and expand financial inclusion.

“This is an exciting opportunity to position Airtel Africa for further success in a dynamic continent full of potential. I look forward to building on the achievements of the last five years during Raghu’s leadership”. He said in a statement released on Thursday.

Outgoing MD, Mandava said now is the right time to retire as he has been with Airtel for 18 years, “It has been a privilege to serve in the African continent and I cherish my time here. Having been at Bharti Airtel for 13 years and at Airtel Africa for 5 years as Chief Executive Officer, I feel now is the right time to take a sabbatical.

“I am very proud of what we have achieved over the past 5 years in Africa, and I look forward to seeing the Company make even greater progress over the coming years”.

Jeff Bezos to step down as Amazon CEO

The Amazon’s founder and chief executive, Jeff Bezos, said on Tuesday he would hand over the company’s reins in July.

However, in an email sent to staff, Bezos said he would transit into the role of executive chairman in the e-commerce giant.

A statement by Amazon said the Chief Executive of the company’s Cloud Computing Division, Andy Jassy, would be promoted to run the entire company.

Bezos said “As much as I still tap dance into the office, I’m excited about this transition.

“As executive chairman, I intend to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives.”

Bezos has successfully transformed the company he founded as an online bookseller in 1996 into a $1.7 trillion behemoths with more than 1.2 million employees.
