Gumi slams politicians for display of wealth at Buhari’s son’s wedding

Northern Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has criticised politicians for their display of wealth amid the widespread poverty in the country during the wedding of President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf, in Kano State.

Gumi, who stated this during a sermon at the Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna on Sunday, likened the politicians to bandits stating both have taken advantage of Nigerians to live life of opulence.

The cleric also wondered where they got all the money they displayed at the wedding, if not from the public purse.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that Yusuf Buhari married Zarah Bayero, the daughter of Emir of Bichi, Nasiru Bayero, at a grand ceremony held in Bichi, Kano State.

Dignitaries at the event included Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, serving and former governors, traditional rulers, as well as prominent personalities from within and outside the country.

Gumi also faulted Nigerian politicians for hiring private jets to attend the wedding.

“Umar bn Khattab once took 16 dinar, which is equivalent of N2,040,000 today, from the treasury as estacode to Hajj. After their return, Umar admitted to Abdallah that they wasted public funds. Somebody told me private jets in Nigeria were all hired for the wedding of Buhari’s son.

“Some people are in captivity in the bushes and cities. Hunger is everywhere. People are facing all manner of problems, yet politicians spent public funds on private jets,” he lamented.

Buhari is Nigeria’s messiah, he did what Obasanjo, Yar’adua, Jonathan, could not do —Adesina

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, has mocked former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, late Umaru Yar’adua and Goodluck Jonathan, saying Buhari has proven that he is ‘Nigeria’s Messiah’ who has been able to achieve what the past leaders could not achieve.

Adesina who made the comment on his popular Facebook column, ‘From the Inside’ on Friday, praised Buhari for signing the Petroleum Industry Bill into law, saying he did what his predecessors did not have the courage to do.

In the piece titled ‘PMB: Call him the master finisher,’ Adesina mocked the former Presidents, saying they were too timid to do the needful but that Buhari being a man with a large heart and a love for Nigerians, decided to take the bull by the horns and sign the PIB into law.

President Muhammadu Buhari has done what Napoleon couldn’t do. Again and again. The Bill had defied Olusegun Obasanjo who introduced it, got the better of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (God rest his soul), worsted Goodluck Jonathan, but has finally been subdued by Buhari,” Adesina wrote.

Continuing, he said:

“The man (Buhari) has proven to be adept at concluding things that had long trounced and vanquished many leaders before him.

“The PIB overwhelmed the first to eighth National Assembly, which couldn’t pass it into law. But through synergy and cooperation between the Executive and the Ninth Assembly, Nigeria now has a law for her cash cow, the oil and gas industry, more than 50 years after the last legislation, which had become obsolete.

Step forward President Buhari, and be garlanded for being the Master Finisher.”

He stated this during the graduation ceremony for participants of Course 29 at the National Defence College, Abuja.

The President’s statement came just three days after the Amnesty International claimed that bandits and other criminals killed 112 persons and abducted 160 others in one month in Kaduna and Plateau States.

Buhari visits Tinubu in London

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday visited the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in London.

The President travelled to the United Kingdom late last month for a routine medical checkup.

He later attended the Global Education Summit on Financing Global Partnership for Education (GPE 2021-2025).

Buhari is expected back in the country later this week.

On the other hand, the former Lagos State governor left the country over one month ago.

Reports had said the APC chieftain was treated for an undisclosed illness in a United States hospital.

However, some of Tinubu’s associates including the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had dismissed the reports.

Sanwo-Olu, who visited the ex-governor in London recently, insisted that he was “hale and hearty.”

He said: “I went to see things for myself. It is just to put the minds and hearts of people to rest that there is nothing for us to worry about.”

SERAP urges Buhari to probe alleged misappropriation of N881bn by 367 MDAs

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to commence an inquest into the reported misappropriation of over “₦880bn of public funds by 367 ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in 2018.”

According to the SERAP, the investigation should be spearheaded by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN.

This request was contained in an open letter dated 7 August, 2021 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare.

SERAP said: “These damning revelations suggest a grave violation of the public trust, the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 [as amended], and international human rights and anti-corruption standards. Spending of public funds without appropriation will create opportunities for corruption.

The letter, read in part: “Complying with constitutional requirements and international standards on the spending of public funds would ensure effective and efficient management of public resources, and put the country’s wealth and resources to work for the common good of all Nigerians. This, in turn, would reduce the growing levels of borrowing and public debts.

We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 14 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest.

“According to part 2 of the 2018 annual audited report by the Auditor-General of the Federation, ₦880,894,733,084.811 was spent by 367 MDAs without appropriation. 14 MDAs reportedly spent ₦162,924,630,539.20 without appropriation. Similarly, 100 MDAs spent ₦229,136,261,325.73 on ‘social benefits’ without appropriation.”

Furthermore, 151 MDAs exceeded their 2018 Overhead Appropriation by ₦476,625,502,048.87 without any evidence of supplementary appropriation or approved virement to support the extra-budgetary spending. 102 MDAs also reportedly spent ₦12,208,339,171.01 on subsidies without budgetary provisions. The Auditor-General is concerned that the money may have been misappropriated.

“Identifying and naming and shaming those who spent public funds without appropriation would improve the chances of success of your government’s oft-repeated commitment to fight corruption and end the impunity of perpetrators. It will also serve the public interest.

SERAP also urges you to direct Mrs Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning to publish widely the details of MDAs and public officials involved in the unconstitutional spending of public funds.

“SERAP urges you to ask the heads of the MDAs involved to explain why they reportedly spent public funds without appropriation, contrary to constitutional and international requirements, and standards of transparency and accountability in the preparation, processes, and decisions on their budgets, and to return any money spent without approval to the public treasury.”

The letter was copied to Mr Malami; Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, Chairman Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC); Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa, Chairman, Economic, and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC); and Mrs Ahmed.

Court sentences PDP youth leader to one year in prison for insulting Buhari

The Adamawa State Magistrate Court on Monday sentenced the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Leader in the state, Ikamu Hamidu Kato, to one year in prison for insulting President Muhammadu Buhari and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

Chief Magistrate Dimas Elishama convicted Kato after he pleaded guilty to charges against him.

The PDP chieftain had in a viral video on July 10 described President Buhari and Mustapha as “useless human beings.”

He also called the SGF a “bastard and a dog.”

The prosecution called two witnesses – a Department of State Service (DSS) operative, Zayyanu Adamu; and Chairman of Adamawa Concern Citizen, Husseini Nakura, to testify against the convict.

Kato’s confessional statement and a USB drive were also presented as exhibits in court.

After listening to the presentation by the prosecution and defence counsels, the Chief Magistrate found the defendant guilty and convicted him accordingly.

He sentenced the convict to one-year imprisonment.

Elishama, however, gave Kato an option of N25,000 fine.

What’s the difference between Hushpuppi, Buhari, Tinubu?, Omokri asks

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has said there is no difference between President Muhammadu Buhari, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu and internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

In a post on his verified Twitter handle on Sunday, Omokri said that while Hushpuppi was defrauding people and using their monies to bribe a Deputy Commissioner of Police, the source of the billions of Naira allegedly spent by Tinubu for Buhari’s election in 2015 and 2019 remains unknown.

Omokri in a post on Twitter using his verified handle wrote, “What is the difference between Abba Kyari and Buhari? Hushpuppi stole money and used it to bribe Kyari.

Where did Bola Tinubu get the money he used to instal Buhari? Until we deal with the crooks at the top, we will continue to be the laughing stock of the world.”

It would be recalled that the United States Department of Justice disclosed that Hushpuppi who is currently facing trial in the US for internet fraud and pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him, allegedly bribed Kyari to arrest and jail his associate in Nigeria, Chibuzo Vincent.

However, Kyari in a statement on his Facebook page, denied the allegations levelled against him, saying he only received the sum of N300,000 from Hushpuppi which is not a bribe, but money ment for his designer to make clothes for the fraudster.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, on Sunday recommended Kyari’s suspension to allow a thorough investigation into the matter, and the Police Service Commission followed suit by suspending him.

It’s a shame! Buhari without certificate attending global education summit —Melaye (video)

Former Senator that represented Kogi West Senatorial district at the 8th National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has taken President Muhammadu Buhari to the cleaners for attending a global educational summit in London when he (President), does not possess an adequate certification that should qualify him to attend the event.

Melaye who posted a video on his Facebook page on Wednesday, questioned the capacity of Buhari to represent Nigerians in a global education summit in the United Kingdom.

The former lawmaker further slammed the president for representing the country at a summit meant to address educational deficiencies, adding that he has nothing to offer academically.

According to Melaye, the President would have rejected the invitation and send the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to represent the country in the global summit.

“It is very funny that President Muhammadu Buhari has gone to London to attend the Global Education Summit,” Melaye said.

“It is funny and it is putting Nigeria in a very bad shape because I’m wondering what will President Buhari be discussing in a global education summit.

This is the man that has just secondary school certificate, a school certificate failure and unfortunately, that certificate is even missing. We have not seen it, no copy of it.

“And you are going to a global education summit where you have professors emeritus. Where you have intellectual mobile characters. And Buhari is going to sit down and discuss what?

“I was even thinking that he would send someone like the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to go and interact. Except the president is going to be deaf and dumb in the summit.

“Except he is going there to be an observer, I’m imagining what President Buhari is going there to discuss.

It is a shame that Nigeria is not represented in this global summit because we have a president who has nothing to offer, who is intellectually stagnant, who has no capacity academically.

“Present Buhari should have told us that he is going for medical not Global education summit,” he said.

Buhari, Osinbajo Live Large On 18 Jumbo Allowances, Here Is What They Currently Earn As Salaries.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s official monthly salary is about N1,171,568. There are, however, 18 jumbo allowances that are paid to the President monthly with no justification, SaharaReporters has gathered.

The President is entitled to hardship allowance of N146,446 per month and Consistency allowance at N732,230 per month.

SaharaReporters learnt that apart from his salary, the President is entitled to no fewer than 18 allowances which are Personal assistant allowance, constituency, vehicle fuelling/maintenance, domestic staff, entertainment, recess, newspaper/periodicals, utilities, houses maintenance, security, special assistant, furniture, wardrobe, duty tour, accommodation, estacode, and medical allowances.

The salary breakdown was given by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

The commission is empowered by section 32(d) of Part1 of the Third Schedule of the Constitution to determine the revenue suitable for political office holders.

Meanwhile, the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, earns N1, 010,524.17 monthly and N12, 126,290 yearly.

He also is entitled to various allowances, including N126,315 monthly as hardship allowance and N631,577 monthly as Consistency allowance.

Other allowances for the top political office holders are accommodation allowance, furniture, duty tour allowance (per night), motor vehicle fueling, and maintenance.

The amounts for each of these allowances are to be provided outside the official revenue mobilization allocation framework.

SaharaReporters gathered that many of the allowances paid to Buhari and Osinbajo are kept away from the knowledge of Nigerians, particularly as relating to medical allowances, as the President has traveled out abroad for medical trips more than any sitting Nigerian president.

Despite the bleeding economy, which is currently grappling with $33billion foreign debts, the federal government has failed to yield to demands to cut the jumbo allowances paid to political office holders, including members of the National Assembly.

In 2015, President Buhari announced that he would only be collecting half of his monthly salary but it’s not certain he is still taking a paycut six years after.

Only on Monday, a rights organization, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to order the RMAFC and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) to review downward the remuneration and allowances of Buhari, Osinbajo, the 36 governors and members of the National Assembly.

The group had said the duo should do this by performing their statutory functions.

SERAP, in a suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/658/2021 filed last Friday, sought “an order of mandamus to direct and compel the RMAFC to send its downward review of the remuneration and allowances of these high-ranking public office holders and recommendations to the National Assembly for appropriate remedial and legislative action, as provided for by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).”

SERAP said slashing jumbo pay for the high-ranking political office-holders would reduce the unfair pay disparity between political officer holders and judicial officers.

SERAP is also seeking “an order of mandamus to direct and compel the RMAFC to perform its mandatory constitutional duty to urgently review upward the remuneration, salaries, and allowances, as well as the conditions of service for Nigerian judges.”

Joined in the suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers, Kolawole Oluwadare and Ms. Adelanke Aremo, are Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, for themselves, and on behalf of all members of the Senate and House of Representative; and the National Judicial Council.

Buhari to host Nigeria’s Olympic Team on Monday before departure for Tokyo

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday will host members of Team Nigeria to the Tokyo Olympics at the Presidential Villa before the final batch of the contingent departs for the Games.

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja at a brief send-forth ceremony for the first batch of the team which left for Japan.

He said the contingent which would leave in four batches would be formally “sent forth” by the President on Monday as is the tradition.

The minister explained that the ceremony would also afford the President the opportunity of officially handing over Team Nigeria to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in line with age-long tradition.

He added that President Buhari would also be unveiling the official Team Nigeria uniform to the Games.

We are keeping to the tradition of unveiling the team to the President who will, in turn, hand them over to the NOC.

“The unveiling of the official wear/equipment will also be done by Mr. President. This is a very symbolic event meant to officially send forth the team to the Games.

This should also inspire the athletes and reinforce the fact that the Federal Government and the entire country are behind them,” Dare said.

The minister also commended the President for the enormous support and resources in preparing and ensuring the athletes do well at the Games.

Team Nigeria, which comprises 58 athletes and 22 coaches, will compete in nine sports at the Tokyo Olympics.

The rescheduled 2020 Olympic Games holds from July 23 to Aug. 8 in Tokyo, Japan.

God has rejected Obasanjo and Buhari, the solution lies with one man – Prophet Adebayo

Prophet Segun Adebayo of Christ Apostolic Church, says that God has rejected former President Olusegun Obasanjo, because when he had an opportunity to clean up the mess in the country in 1999, he failed to use his opportunity.

According to the cleric, God had also rejected President Muhammadu Buhari and he could foresee a crisis in northern Nigeria, saying the only man with a solution is one of the conveners of the Yoruba nation agitation, Prof Banji Akintoye.

According to SaharaReporters, Adeboye made the declarations in an interview published by Asabeafrika on Thursday

Speaking in Yoruba, the prophet said Obasanjo was disobedient to God and “the grace has left him”.

The Lord sent the hosts of heaven with many swords. The swords have not gone back. There will be a crisis in the North; the people of Buhari will be no more. Where is the generation of Murtala Mohammed?

“Obasanjo was a beloved of God but he was disobedient. The grace has left him. When he got there in 1999 was when he was given the opportunity. That was when we gave Obasanjo the grace to rectify what was wrong. And we told him, he did not listen. What they wanted to eat did not let them listen.

“Solution will not come from him again. I am praying for Baba Akintoye – Prof Banjo Akintoye. I saw that they gave him a solution. That was why I said Sunday Igboho and Gani Adams should not fight each other.

What God sent Igboho to do is what he is doing. Let Gani Adams not let people push him. I called Baba Akintoye and I told him that he should warn Sunday Igboho to be wary of the people around him.

They should not let kings and politicians divide you and Igboho. You are the ones that God will give the glory in this struggle. It is he who ends the struggles that we will say well done to,” he said.

Again, Buhari embarks on medical trip to London

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Friday travel to London, United Kingdom for medical reasons.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

He explained that the President’s trip to London was for a scheduled medical follow-up, adding that he would be back in the country during the second week of July.

President Buhari’s scheduled trip to London comes almost three months since he last visited the United Kingdom for the same purpose.

He had travelled to the United Kingdom on March 30 for a routine medical check-up, as indicated in a statement by his media adviser.

The President later returned to the country via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on April 15, at the end of the trip which lasted more than two weeks.

Buhari leading Nigeria’s educational revolution – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said on Wednesday President Muhammadu Buhari is leading an education revolution that would transform the country technologically.

The National Secretary of the APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), John Akpanudoedehe, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

He said the Buhari administration had been consistent in boosting education for human capital development in Nigeria.

The APC scribe commended the President for approving the establishment of five new specialised universities of technology, health, and pharmaceutical sciences in the country.

The decision, according to him, was a demonstration of the government’s responsiveness to the call by the citizens for more federal tertiary institutions in the country.

Akpanudoedehe said: “Commendably, President Buhari is fulfilling the APC’s electoral promise to lead an education revolution and transform the country technologically.

He stressed that the creation of more universities was captured in the 2015 APC manifesto and outlined in the Education for Change Ministerial Strategic Plan 2018-2022.

“Triggered by eventualities of the COVID-19 global pandemic and the need to reduce medical tourism.

“This is also a proactive intervention by the President Buhari-led APC government to boost the country’s institutional capacity for disease control and surveillance,” he added.

Buhari has no interest in amendment of media bills —Presidency

In the wake of widespread criticism over the attempt to muzzle the media, the Presidency on Wednesday refuted claims that President Muhammadu Buhari spearheaded the campaign.

According to a statement issued by Femi Adesina, a Presidential aide, the President has nothing to do with the ongoing attempt by the House of Representatives to amend the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) Act and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Act.

He made this clarification while fielding questions from State House reporters after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

Adesina further noted that only the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, could speak on the matter.

When asked to comment on the issue, Adesina said: “That’s not strictly a Presidency thing because the president has nothing to do with that. It’s a government thing and it’s the Minister that can talk about it. So, thank you.”

The aide also explained that the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, was studying the ruling issued by the ECOWAS Court over the suspension of Twitter services in the country.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the ECOWAS Court ruled that Twitter users cannot be arrested or prosecuted following the suspension of the activities of the microblogging site in the country.

I hope Nigerians will cherish all my administration has done – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that he will continue to work with dedication to meet the objectives that his administration set out to achieve in 2015.

Buhari made the statement on Friday when he received members of the Muhammadu Buhari and Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group at State House Abuja.

The group visited the president for the official presentation of their book titled ‘A Compendium of 5-Year Achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration from 2015 – 2020.’

Speaking at the presentation, President Buhari said; “The MBO Dynamic Support Group Officers and team members saw the good in our Administration from the time we came in 2015. It is this commitment that led to the production of the book, and I sincerely hope and believe that Nigerians will always see and cherish positivity in all that this Administration has done as it continues to work assiduously to accomplish”.

He commended the organisation for the support and the efforts to come up with the publication as it will serve as a documentation of some of the administration’s achievement:

He said; “The birth of this book from inception to production is due to the unrelenting efforts of the MBO Dynamic Support Group Officers and over two million group of supporters that have continuously stood by our Administration in our quest to deliver on our social contract to all Nigerians and ensure the dividends of democracy to our people.

I am extremely pleased with the production team and those who travelled across the country monitoring and collating data on our projects to enable us present an evidence based account of our stewardship.

“Despite the global challenges of COVID-19 that impeded socio-economic activities of the world including our country Nigeria in 2020, you all worked tirelessly with limited resources and by tasking one another to produce this historic book.

We recognise and appreciate your drive, skills, creative abilities and your personal resources invested in this project and immense devotion to produce the book.

“I thank you once again for your unwavering commitment to this Administration and legacy and look forward to the wide circulation of our achievements perfectly captured in this book to all citizens and those willing to see that we succeed to the end for the benefit of all.”

Buhari won’t hand over power in 2023 – Olusegun Bamgbose

National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance (CAGG), Olusegun Bamgbose, Esq. has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will remain in power even after the expiration of his tenure in 2023.

According to the senior lawyer, those expecting Buhari to hand over power come 2023 may be heavily disappointed.

He stated this in a chat with DAILY POST on Friday, noting that the increasing insecurity in the country may be an excuse not to conduct elections in 2023.

Bamgbose said; “The possibility of Buhari stepping down come 2023 is very slim. I have reasons to believe that the persistence of insecurity in Nigeria is a subtle ploy to extend Buhari’s tenure.

The recent attacks in Kebbi State where about 300 bandits with AK-47 operated for 8 hours moving from house to house, room to room, and robbing people, is a strong indication that the security architecture of the country has collapsed.

“There is a strong possibility that this government may not be able to tackle insecurity headlong for Buhari to remain in power beyond 2023. This is very obvious.

“We are seriously in a precarious situation where the lives of Nigerian citizens are traded on the platter of politics. This is a sad situation.

“Buhari once told the bandits not to push their luck too far, that he can crush them, but have they not pushed their luck too far? What has Buhari done to tackle insecurity apart from warnings that are not backed with actions?

The most unfortunate thing is that Buhari had since stopped reading newspapers and watching news on TV unlike before.

“In essence, he has lost touch with the plight of Nigerians. This is sad. Nigerians should rise to the occasion and resist all attempts to elongate Buhari’s tenure through the backdoor.”

I’m paying Nigerians back for their love for me – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his commitment to serve Nigeria is a payback for the love Nigerians have shown him.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said Buhari made the statement at the palace of Shehu of Borno while on a visit to the state on Thursday.

He said; “My commitment to serve Nigerians is a payback for the love shown to me.

“I started my political adventure in Maiduguri and I always look forward to coming here.”

The president also visited troops in Operation HADIN KAI at the Maimalari Cantonment, Borno state.

He commended the troops for defending the country against insurgents, adding that there is still much work to be done to restore peace to war ravaged North East.

“Your courage and gallantry will continue to inspire others, as they echo into the future.

“While I commend your resilience, let me remind you that there is still a lot of work to be done, to completely restore peace to the North-East, stem the activities of armed bandits in the North-West and North-Central, as well as deal with other security challenges across the country,” he said.
