Abia First Lady donates N3.5m to cancer patients

Abia’s First Lady, Priscilla Otti, on Tuesday presented N3.5m to some cancer patients in Abia State and called for improved collaboration by all to prevent and fight the disease.

Mrs. Otti handed out this gesture on the occasion of the 2024 World Cancer Day celebration in Umuahia, the state capital, stating that the donation aims to assist them in their fight against cancer, covering part of their treatment costs and helping to alleviate their suffering.

“We understand the financial strain that cancer treatment can place on individuals and their families. That is why, as a symbol of our commitment, I will be presenting a donation of N3.5 million in the form of bank cheques to some identified, underprivileged patients today.

“This donation aims to assist them in their fight against cancer, covering part of their treatment costs and helping to alleviate their suffering,” she said.

While noting that cancer has become a serious and urgent health concern, she said, “Across Nigeria, it is estimated that nearly 28,000 cases of breast cancer and 14,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed every year. Among men, an alarming rise in the incidence of Prostate and colon cancer has been reported.

“Abia State is not immune to this sobering trend and despite current strides in the healthcare sector, we are witnessing a rising cancer rate. Early detection and prevention remain critical to reversing this unfortunate trend”, stating that the occasion “symbolizes a call to robust action for every individual, family, and community to unite in the fight against cancer.”

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, described the event as “marking a milestone in the long-drawn fight against cancer, a relentless and ageless enemy of humanity.”

An Ex-personnel of the Department of State Services, DSS, Prosper Israel, has been paraded alongside nine other suspected robbers by the Abia State Police force.

Parading the suspects before newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Janet Agbade, said the armed robbery gang was part of the 14-man robbery gang that ambushed a bullion van near the Ntigha junction of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway on July 26, 2022.

During the robbery, they killed one new generation bank cash officer on the spot, and carted away an unspecified amount of cash being conveyed by the bullion van.

CP Agbade, said their arrest was the reward of months of painstaking efforts and investigation.

”I carefully studied their modus operandi and set up a special intelligence technologically-led Investigative squad ( ITLIS) with a clear directive to arrest and recover weapons used by the deadly armed robbery gang.

Consequently, the Investigation used systematically commenced operation, applying speed and accuracy, and on different locations and days, arrested the following callous armed robbery gang” she said.

The police boss gave the names of the suspects as Adesoji Adeniyi from Ondo State; Nnamdi Nwaosu a.k.a “Prophet”; Chinwendu Israel from Abia; and Prosper Israel ( ex – DSS personnel), also from Abia.

Others were Nwachukwu Albert a.k.a White ( first amourer) from Delta State but resident in Lagos; Felix Ajaja from Ondo State; Moshood Opeyemi, from Osun State; and Matthew Christmas also from Delta.

Among the suspects also were Azubuike Amaefula a.k.a Zubby from Abia; and Monday Samuel (second armourer) from Delta but resident in Ondo State.

Others were two improvised explosives dynamites; a Mercedes Benz mini truck used in concealing firearms; and cash of N10, 184,000. According to the CP, the suspects during interrogation confessed that they placed the bullion van on surveillance for two months.

The CP who said that efforts were on to trail three other members of the gang still at large, pleaded with members of the public to always volunteer information about suspected criminals around them.

She said that the suspects would be arraigned after further investigations.

When interrogated, the ex-DSS officer pleaded for forgiveness, saying it was the first time he would be involved in any crime.

He said he was initially serving at the Abia State Government House but was dismissed in 2007 following his late reporting to a new posting.

According to him, it was his brother that gave him part of the money he got from the operation.

”My role in the operation was that I was in my house when my brother brought money and his colleagues and they shared and gave me part of it.

I asked him and he told me how they got the money. I want to plead for forgiveness because I failed to rebuke him.

So, it is obvious I participated because I can’t say I did not. But it was not intentional and I want society to forgive us”he said

Army slams reports of aiding criminalities in Abia State

The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations by a lawmaker in Abia that military personnel were aiding and abetting criminality in the Isuikwuato Local Government Area of the state.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement in Abuja, warned the lawmaker to desist from such blackmail.

Nwachukwu said that the assembly member representing Isuikwuato constituency of Abia had alleged that when security agents arrested suspected kidnappers of Abia State University lecturers, a certain call came from a high military formation ordering their release.

“Much as we do not want to join issues with the insinuators, it is crucial to set the record straight.

If truly the claims in the said report emanated from the lawmaker, then we must state without mincing words that they are not only unfounded but a travesty of facts and reality.

“The claim is completely devoid of truth. It is most unfair for anyone at that height of the social ladder to sponsor a smear campaign against the Nigerian Army for whatever reason; particularly knowing that he has access to the leadership of the military.

Contrary to the narrative being peddled in the said report, it took the gallantry of our men on patrol to rescue the victims of the said kidnap incident before handing them over to the police.

“How then could the same army that was instrumental to the rescue of the victims, turn around to order the release of the suspects.

“Evidently, this is illogical and a blatant lie,” he said.

Nwachukwu said that the report was an abysmally failed attempt at blackmailing the army for denying unscrupulous elements the freedom of action to foist lawlessness and violence on the good people and government of Abia.

He said that the lawmaker was supposed to have sought clarifications from the army before resorting to media trial.

He appealed to members of the public to approach the army on any issue requiring clarification rather than resorting to blackmail.
