Kalu urges politicians to shift focus from 2023 elections

The former governor of Abia State, Orji-Uzor Kalu, on Wednesday urged politicians to work for the unity of the country through their actions rather than focusing on the 2023 general elections.

Kalu made the call in a chat with journalists in Abuja.

He was responding to the conferment of a traditional title on him by the Emir of Arugungu in Kebbi State, Alhaji Mohammed Mera.

The ex-governor said: “I will like to use this opportunity to call on politicians to focus on the unity of the country, focus on the problem of banditry, focus on the problem of the people than focusing on the election coming on in two years’ time.

People of Nigeria should focus on the unity of Nigeria today because the unity of the country is more important to us today than any other thing we are going to do.

“If we are overrun by bandits, we will not be able to run for election.

“Those who are sabotaging government should stop henceforth so that we will live in a very conducive environment.”

The Senate Chief Whip urged Nigerians to support the government at all levels and the security agencies in the fight against insecurity.

“The government alone cannot do this fight, it is for everybody to fight and win, and so we must report back to our security agencies, where we find any challenge,” Kalu added.

There’ll be no election in 2023 without new Constitution —Afenifere

Apex pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has insisted that there will be no election in 2023 without a new Constitution for the country.

The Afenifere who declared this stance through its leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, at the its monthly meeting held at his residence in Sanya-Ogbo, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Tuesday, said leaders of the group have resolved to preach a ‘no new Constitution, no 2023 election’ to all Yoruba people in the country.

Adebanjo who presided over the meeting, said it will be a waste of time for Yoruba people to participate in the coming election with the 1999 Constitution still in operation.

On the resolution of the group on the coming election, Adebanjo said he and other leaders of Afenifere have resolved that the Constitution must be reviewed before the election could hold.

“I don’t believe in the election as the leader of Afenifere and some of my members here don’t believe; I don’t believe in that election and I have told my members if they can refuse it, okay, what do we need elections for?” Chief Adebanjo reiterated.

“Our stand is that the Constitution is not our own, the election is going on under that fraudulent Constitution, they said they will go to the assembly to amend, assembly is the product of the fraud. You want the beneficiary of the fraud to amend the fraud, who are you talking to? Here is a man that has come out openly, declared that, ‘say what you like,” he added.

Buhari’s visit to Tinubu not about 2023 election – Presidency

The Presidency declared on Friday that President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Bola Tinubu, in the United Kingdom was not to support his 2023 presidential ambition.

The President visited the ex-Lagos State governor in London on Thursday.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, stated this when he featured in a Channels Television programme, Politics Today, in Abuja.

Adesina said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not given approval for the commencement of the 2023 electoral campaign, adding that the President cannot break the rules.

He stressed that President Buhari would only begin campaign after the APC presidential candidate has emerged.

Adesina said: “The President still has two years in his tenure of office. So for him to start supporting somebody now will just be jumping the gun.

And you know that President Buhari will never do that. Before the 2019 election, people started to campaign for him before INEC blew the whistle for the campaign to start. He was the one who came out to say no, don’t do it. Don’t jump the gun.

“So the President himself will dare not jump the gun in terms of supporting one candidate or the other.

“Also recall that he has said that anybody who wants to be President after him should go out and work. That means the President may not be supporting anybody until maybe when the candidate of the party emerges. Knowing President Buhari, he will never jump the gun.”

I am focused on helping President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver on his mandates – Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has debunked the report that he is quietly opening a presidential campaign office in Abuja.

Tinubu in his reaction noted that he is focused on helping President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver on his mandates.

Recall that a news platform had claimed that the APC National Leader secretly opened a campaign office.

However, Tinubu, who spoke through his Media Aide, Tunde Rahman, called on his supporters to work with Buhari.

He further stated that followers of Tinubu want him to run for Presidency.

“His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has not even declared his intention to contest the 2023 presidential election let alone opening a campaign office. He has repeatedly said 2023 is still some years away and that he is at present focused on helping President Buhari to deliver on his mandate as he is doing and coast home to victory.”

“That is his position. You know also that many of his friends, associates and supporters who feel he is eminently qualified for the presidency and has done excellently well to advance our democracy and want to see him contest for the top job are doing everything on their own to see this happen.”

“I don’t know the office you are talking about, but it may just be one of those things these people are doing to get Asiwaju Tinubu to do as they wish. And I think they have a right to advance the course they believe in. Asiwaju’s appeal, however, is they allow the present government to concentrate on the good job it is doing and allow the matter of 2023 to take care of itself in the fullness of time,”
