President Bola Tinubu seeks Senate’s confirmation of Oluyede as COAS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally written to the Senate, seeking confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.

This move follows Oluyede’s appointment as Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, after the illness of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who sadly passed away on November 5.

A statement issued on Friday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said President Tinubu’s letter to the Senate is in accordance with the provisions of Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.

The President has expressed confidence in Lt. General Oluyede’s leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience to lead and inspire the army to ensure national security and stability.

Lt. General Oluyede boasts an impressive military career, having served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 and rose to the rank of Major-General in September 2020.

Oluyede has participated in several operations, including the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East theatre of operations.
