Two young women, Doris Nelson and Winner Ugochukwu, have been rescued from the baby factory residence of one Nnanna Michael in the Ariaria area of Aba, Abia State.
Nnanna Michael, 64, according to Usman Ishaq Alfadari, the Abia State commander of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, was arrested through credible intelligence provided to the command.
A press release made available by the Public Relations Officer of the Abia Command of NSCDC, Doreen Ogechi Udugwu, said that while Doris Nelson, 23, is an indigene of Gombe State, Winner Ugochukwu, 21, is from Isinweke, Ihite Uboma, Imo State.
An investigation by NSCDC showed that Doris Nelson gave birth on Monday, September 9, 2024, and the baby was sold to a yet-to-be-identified buyer at N1.1 million, with the mother receiving just N100,000 from the N500,000 she was promised by the suspect.
Further investigation showed the second rescued girl, Winner Ugochukwu, is presently seven months pregnant.
Parading the suspect and the rescued girls before newsmen in Aba, Alfadari said that the suspect, Michael Nnanna, a father of four children, claimed he was a former worker in a motherless home. He also reportedly confessed to harbouring pregnant women and taking care of them till their date of delivery before selling the babies.
The alleged baby factory operator also claimed that Doris Nelson was introduced to him by someone based in Abuja, while Winner Ugochukwu was introduced to him by one Evangelist First Samuel, who is now at large.
The Abia NSCDC commandant noted that the suspect had been in the illicit business for some time before he was nabbed.
He further affirmed that the case, after investigations, would be transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, for prosecution.
