Children stampede: Makinde insists on prosecution of suspects

Amid calls for leniency for suspects facing trial for their roles in the stampede that led to the death of 35 children at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, venue of the aborted funfair party for children, Governor Seyi Makinde yesterday said those involved, no matter how highly placed, must face trial.

He said many of those reaching out to him had been saying there was also stampede in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and nobody was facing trial; as such, why should Oyo State prosecute people.

But, Makinde said even if nobody was held accountable in other areas in the country, he would ensure the rule of law was followed in Oyo State.

The governor, who said he was not against the court granting the suspects bail, however said the matter was in the purview of the court and the suspects must face trial.
