Two killed in Osun road crash

Two passengers of a commercial bus on Friday lost their lives in an accident that occurred in Balogun Village near Ikire, Osun State.

Although details of how the lone accident occurred were not immediately available, the bus involved was said to be heading for Lagos from Ekiti State.

The deceased were said to have died on the spot.

Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Federal Road Safety Corps reportedly responded shortly after the crash.

The spokesperson of NSCDC in Osun State, Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the accident.

Adeleke said, “Today April 5, 2024, around 1336 hours, one bus from Ekiti going to Lagos had a lone accident around Balogun village which claimed two lives instantly.”

She added that those injured in the crash were taken to a private hospital in Apomu for treatment.

Adeleke, also said the Osun NSCDC Commandant, Dr Michael Adaralewa, “enjoined road users, especially motorists, to always obey traffic rules and regulations while driving to avoid the loss of lives and property on our roads.”

Police arrests teenager for murder in Bayelsa

EFCC files fresh 26 charges against ex-CBN governor Emefiele

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has filed a fresh 26-count charge bordering on abuse of office and corruption against the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele will be arraigned before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Monday, April 8, on counts bordering on accepting gratification, accepting gifts through agents, corruption, receipt of property fraudulently obtained, and conferring corrupt advantage on his associates contrary to the Corrupt Practices Act of 2000.

According to Channels Television, the new charges were filed on April 3 by the EFCC Prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

Count one of the charge reads; “That you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, between 2022 and 2023, in Lagos, directed to be done in abuse of the authority of your office, as the Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, an arbitrary act, to wit: allocating foreign exchange in the aggregate sum of $2,136,391,737.33 (two billion, one hundred and thirty-six million, three hundred and ninety-one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-seven dollars, thirty-three cents) without bids, which act is prejudicial to the rights of Nigerians.”

He said that items recovered from them included eight cars, laptops and phones.

The suspects will be charged to court soon,” he said.

Microsoft forecasts AI to generate $15.7 trillion for global economy by 2030

On Thursday, Microsoft, a multinational technology company, said artificial intelligence could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030.

A commercial lawyer with Microsoft Africa, Theo Watson, said this in his presentation, ‘AI Opportunity in Africa’ at the African AI Journalists Academy via Microsoft Team.

While emphasising the opportunities AI could bring to Africa, Mr Watson said that of the $15.7 trillion AI could generate, $1.2 trillion could be generated in Africa.

He noted that the $1.2 trillion represented a 5.6 per cent increase in the continent’s GDP by 2030.

Mr Watson, however, emphasised the need for responsible regulation of artificial intelligence to accelerate its opportunities and reap its benefits.

According to him, as the world navigates this AI-powered future, our journey must be underpinned by responsible and sustainable innovation.

He said this would ensure that AI’s progress in the nation remained aligned with human values and societal norms.

“Responsible and sustainable innovation will ensure that AI progress aligns with the needs that define Africa’s vastly diverse cultures. This involves a deep engagement with the continent’s unique challenges, recognising their complexity and prioritising those that AI can help solve.

“Also, collaborating with relevant stakeholders will be key to ensuring that AI solutions are not just technologically advanced but also culturally attuned and genuinely beneficial to African societies,’’ the lawyer said.

Mr Watson stressed that building trust and security was vital, and Microsoft’s responsible AI journey started in 2016. He said the Microsoft AI journey was accompanied by its AI principles of fairness, rehabilitation and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency and accountability.

Akua Gyekye, Microsoft Africa’s government affairs director, said the world was changing, industries were transforming rapidly, and drivers of economic growth were evolving.

Mr Gyekye said technology was addressing socioeconomic delivery issues, such as health, education, and agriculture, and that the impact was real.

According to her, Thekwini Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa is leveraging AI to reduce water wastage and provide innovative water and sanitation services to its growing population.

“Farmers in Nigeria and Kenya are getting customised advice on farming based on AI, advice on soil and weather data. This helps them to make evidence- driven decisions and increase yields using technology to do the research and help find the right use of AI to boost productivity of their workforce,” she said.

However, Mr Gyekye highlighted some blueprints for governing AI that could accelerate opportunities in Africa, noting that this included promoting transparency and ensuring academic and public access to AI.

Truck kills pedestrian at Onitsha after brake failed

A female pedestrian has been confirmed dead in a crash involving a truck along the Onitsha-Asaba road, Anambra, on Thursday.

FRSC sector commander Adeoye Irelewuyi confirmed the incident to newsmen in Awka on Friday.

He said, “The crash involved an articulated Mercedes Benz vehicle with registration number NKE 25 LG. Eyewitness reports reaching us indicated that the vehicle had a brake failure and rammed into people along the road.

“Two persons were injured, and a female pedestrian was killed. The FRSC rescue team rushed the injured victims to Toronto hospital in Onitsha and deposited the body of the dead at the hospital morgue.”

While commiserating with the family of the dead, Mr Irelewuyi advised motorists to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles to ascertain when it is suitable to ply the road.

He also urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules.

Healthcare in Haiti under attack by armed gangs- OCHA

The UN Humanitarian Coordination Office (OCHA) says hospitals in Haiti’s capital have come under increasing attack by armed gangs, with some being looted amid ongoing turmoil.

In a statement, OCHA said two healthcare facilities in Port-au-Prince were forced to shut down, while two remain closed despite plans to reopen after being shuttered due to rising violence.

Only La Paix University Hospital is operational in the capital area, and it has come under significant strain due to rising demand for services.

The Delmas 18 Hospital and Saint Martin Health Centre were looted on March 26 and 27.

PAHO, the UN-administered Pan American Health Organisation, provides essential supplies such as medicines, fuel, and logistic assistance to keep services going.

According to OCHA, armed groups also targeted and raided 10 pharmacies in Haiti’s capital, severely hindering public access to medications.

The office stated that rising violence also affected the work of HIV and tuberculosis service sites, but local UNAIDS services are collaborating with Haiti’s Health Ministry, with HIV testing prioritised.

Amid a political vacuum, Haiti’s powerful gangs launched coordinated attacks on various targets since February, including police stations, prisons, airports, and seaports, resulting in the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry three weeks ago.

While a state of emergency is in effect, a transitional government has yet to be established.

On Tuesday, the World Food Programme (WFP) distributed meals to over 28,000 people in the capital, and last week, the World Health Organisation, UNICEF, and local partners carried out nearly 600 consultations in displacement sites.

Meanwhile, responding to the critical needs of civilians impacted by the ongoing war in Sudan, WHO country teams and neighbouring South Sudan teamed up to deliver supplies to the Blue Nile and Nuba Mountains.

The ongoing crisis significantly impeded the ability of the WHO office in Sudan to access and deliver essential emergency medical supplies to the two regions, said WHO in a statement on Wednesday.

It added that by leveraging the South Sudan office’s logistic expertise and available resources, emergency health kits have been prepositioned from existing stockpiles in areas along the Sudan-South Sudan border, ensuring timely and effective assistance to those in dire need.

The joint effort is a testament to the commitment of both offices to cross-border collaboration, and the inter-agency emergency health supplies are expected to serve approximately 830,000 people in the conflict-affected Blue Nile and Nuba Mountain areas in the next three months.

The shipment was the second that WHO South Sudan delivered across the border since the outbreak of brutal conflict between rival militaries nearly a year ago.

The agency said the dispatch of supplies was part of WHO’s continuous relief efforts for the Sudanese people.

FG fully opens Third Mainland Bridge, urges motorists to maintain speed limit

The federal government, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, has installed speed limit cameras on the Third Mainland Bridge to encourage responsible driving, preserve the bridge and improve safety.

The federal controller of works, Lagos, Keisha Olukorede, announced the unofficial reopening of the bridge on Thursday.

The federal government began comprehensive rehabilitation of the bridge on January 9 due to several failed portions.

She disclosed that the speed cameras would be displayed conspicuously at the median to capture motorists exceeding the limit. She added that anyone caught speeding would not face immediate penalties on the spot.

Ms Olukorede said, “The speed limit has been designed to be 80km/per hour. So, if you speed past 80km in the next few weeks, your honourable commissioner will have you to contend with.”

Speaking on behalf of Works Minister David Umahi, the federal controller noted that the bridge, which was fully opened to the public, still needed some additional work. She said the remaining work includes installing solar lights and CCTV cameras.

According to her, they are doing this while the bridge is open so as not to disrupt traffic flow in the future.

Ms Olukorede said the main deck repairs would be finished by May 2024, adding that President Bola Tinubu would hold an official commissioning to mark the completion.

Additionally, she said work would be done underneath the bridge and underwater.

She appealed to motorists to report breakdowns, saying, “If you see something, say something, and if you see a car being repaired on the bridge, you should report it by calling me or the police.

“We are going to talk with the governor. It is not to your joy or delight if your vehicle breaks down. So, you should be assisted instead of being penalised.”

In his remark, the Commissioner for Transportation, Lagos State, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, corroborated Keisha’s statements, urging people to comply.

“You will see speed limit signs as from today and the speed cameras will come on; the speed limit for Third Mainland Bridge is 80km per hour, so the speed cameras are there.

“So if you go beyond the speed limits, what it does is take a picture of your car and your number plate; we have a database, and we have our ways of sending your bills to you,’’ he said.

Thieves stole $30m in cash in one of the biggest heists in LA history

Thieves stole tens of millions of dollars from a Los Angeles cash storage facility on Easter Sunday, with their crime only discovered the next day.

The stealing of at least $30m (£24m) is one of the biggest cash heists in LA history, local media reported.

There are few clues as to who carried out the crime, which was been described as “elaborate”, or how.

The Los Angeles Police Department and FBI are jointly investigating it.

No alarms were tripped and no one knew thieves had entered the facility, located in the San Fernando Valley, where cash from local businesses is processed and stored in a vault.

A crew of sophisticated burglars is believed to have come in through the roof, according to local media. Only a small group of people were aware so much cash was held in the building.

It took until Monday, when facility employees opened the vault, to realise that the massive sum was missing.

The safe did not show any outward sign of break-in.

The total surpasses any that has been taken in armoured vehicle robberies in the area, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Oldest Christian book goes on sale

Christianity’s oldest religious book, according to auction house Christie’s, is going on sale in June.

The Crosby-Schøyen Codex, written in Coptic script on papyrus in Egypt, dates to between 250-350AD.

It is also thought to be one of the oldest books in existence and could sell for up to $3.8m (£3m).

The liturgical book was produced in one of the first Christian monasteries and contains the complete texts of two Bible books.

The text is of “monumental importance as a witness to the earliest spread of Christianity around the Mediterranean,” said Eugenio Donadoni, senior specialist for books and manuscripts at Christies.

“The earliest monks in Upper Egypt in the earliest Christian monastery were using this very book to celebrate the earliest Easter celebrations, only a few hundred years after Christ and only a hundred or so years after the last Gospel was written.

“The book is part of the Bodmer Papyri, a collection of several texts which were discovered in the 1950s, and include Christian writings, Biblical extracts and pagan literature.

The manuscript itself contains texts including the first complete epistle of Peter, the Book of Jonah, and an Easter homily.

The 104 pages, or 52 leaves were written by one scribe at the dawn of Christianity, over a period of 40 years. The book is one of the oldest texts in the world, the auction house says.

Its remarkable preservation has been attributed to Egypt’s arid climate, Mr Donadoni said.

The codex was bought by the University of Mississippi where it remained until 1981, and was acquired several times before being purchased by Norwegian manuscript collector Dr Martin Schøyen in 1988.

Dr Schøyen is auctioning the manuscript alongside other pieces from his collection, which is one of the largest manuscript archives in the world.

The codex is on display at Christie’s New York and will remain there until 9 April.

It will be auctioned on 11 June in London, with an estimated sale price of between $2.6m and $3.8m (£2m to £3m).

Residents rescue newborn baby abandoned in Anambra forest

A newborn baby abandoned in a forest in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been rescued by some residents.

A source told our correspondent that the concerned residents are rehabilitating the baby.

The source said: “From what we saw the baby may been abandoned in the forest for about two days before it was discovered.

“The baby is doing well; he is stable.”

A video trending online corroborated the report.

In the video, some women believed to be local midwives were seen cleansing the baby while condemning those who abandoned him in the forest.

The women and a male voice doing the video wondered how someone would carry a baby for nine months, only to throw such child away.

Our correspondent could not get the police to react to the development as of the time of filing this report as calls put across to the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, could not go through.

Anthony Joshua’s next opponent ‘leaked’

Anthony Joshua will not be fighting Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk next, according to his good friend Derek Chisora.

Former two-time world champion Joshua was promised a shot at the undisputed world titles following his brutal KO win against Francis Ngannou last month.

Fury and Usyk fight for all four heavyweight belts next month and their fight has a two-way rematch clause, meaning they will likely meet again later this year regardless of the result.

Queensbury Promotions are hosting a Wembley Stadium event later this year and Chisora claims Joshua will be headlining the card.

“He will fight the winner of Daniel Dubois and [Filip] Hrgovic in Wembley. F*** it, I’ve got a big mouth. That’s the plan. It’s gonna be a sick, a little adventure for Turki Alalshikh to bring it back to London,” Chisora told iFL TV.

TNT Sports will bring you a host of thrilling drama from the boxing world in 2024. Catch up with the best in the business while following all of the best action.

A fight between Dubois and Hrgovic will likely take place on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol’s undisputed clash in Saudi Arabia on June 1.

It could be for the IBF world title if the organisation forces Fury or Usyk to fight their mandatory challenger Hrgovic.

Another big heavyweight fight between Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang, who both lost to Joseph Parker in their last fights, is also rumoured to take place on the card.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn thinks if Fury beats Usyk next month then a fight against Joshua will be made instead of a rematch with the Ukrainian.

Fury’s promoter Frank Warren is adamant the two-fight undisputed deal will be honoured, delaying a potential Fury vs Joshua fight until March.

Hearn thinks Joshua is now the best heavyweight in the world after his stunning performance against Ngannou, which extended his unbeaten streak to four fights.

Fury scoffed at the promoter’s claim by bringing up Joshua’s previous two losses to Usyk. “I’m sure that Oleksandr Usyk will have something to say about that given he beat him twice,” Fury said.

“For the actual real boxing, it’s me and Oleksandr Usyk who fight for the undisputed heavyweight world championship of the world. I had a s*** performance against Francis Ngannou, that’s what a boxer should have done with him, but if he fights next year it’ll be a different game.”

Donald Trump drags co-founders of social media site to court

Former United States President Donald Trump has instituted legal action against two co-founders of Trump Media over the mismanagement of his social media site, Truth Social.

Trump said the two men, Wes Moss and Andy Litinsky, should lose their shares of the company for mismanaging his social media site.

The duo already filed a suit against Trump in February to prevent him from reducing their 8.6 per cent stake in the firm.

They pitched the idea of Truth Social following the Capitol riot after Trump was banned from Twitter, now X. Their shares are currently valued at around $600 million (£477 million).

Both co-founders met Trump as contestants on NBC’s The Apprentice reality show.

In the lawsuit, filed on March 24 in a Florida state court, lawyers for the former president said Messrs. Moss and Litinsky were in charge of Trump Media & Technology Group’s daily operations, but “failed spectacularly at every turn.”

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) is the parent company of Truth Social.

Trump’s lawyers claim the two executives in particular slowed down the process of taking Trump Media public, including by finding an appropriate merger company.

TMTG went public last week through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC.

In their February lawsuit, Moss and Litinsky claimed the former president was trying to reduce their stake in the firm by increasing the company’s total number of shares from 120 million to 1 billion.

Trump founded TMTG in 2021 after he was kicked off of major social media platforms for his actions during the January 6 Capitol riot.

Moss and Litinsky suggested Truth Social as an alternative to mainstream social media sites. They later agreed to a deal in which Trump would own 90% of the platform when it was a private company.

Shares in Truth Social skyrocketed last week, surging as high as $79 (£63) after Trump Media went public despite the business facing government investigations and other hurdles in its merger deal. The stock price has since fallen considerably.

Explosion in Lebanon is not direct hit on patrol- UN peacekeepers

The United Nations Interim Forces in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Wednesday the explosion that hit a patrol in southern Lebanon last weekend and injured three UN peacekeepers was not a “direct or indirect hit.”

According to preliminary investigations, no “direct or indirect hits,” UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenneti told dpa, suggesting that no drone or artillery was involved.

“We are continuing our investigation to clarify the exact cause,” he added.

On March 30, there was an explosion in Lebanon near the Israeli border in which a Lebanese language assistant was also injured along with the UN peacekeepers.

The group was on foot patrol along the border with Israel.

The Lebanese news agency, NNA, said at the time that a drone attacked a UNIFIL vehicle.

Lebanese reports spoke of an attack by the Israeli military.

The Israeli army rejected the allegations.

Lebanese security sources said on Wednesday that an explosive device or a landmine had exploded on the side of the road as the patrol was in the area.

They ruled out that it was an Israeli drone attack or Israeli shelling.

Since the beginning of the Gaza war after the massacre by Hamas in Israel on October 7, there have been daily, sometimes deadly, confrontations between Israel’s army and militant groups such as Hezbollah.

Civilians have also been killed in both countries as a result of mutual shelling.

UNIFIL has been monitoring the border area between the two countries since 1978.

Zimbabwe declares drought disaster

President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared Zimbabwe’s drought a national disaster on Wednesday and said the country needed more than two billion dollars in aid to feed millions facing hunger.

Mr Mnangagwa’s statement follows similar announcements by Zambia in late February and Malawi in March, as drought induced by the El Nino global weather pattern triggers a humanitarian crisis in southern Africa.

Mr Mnangagwa told journalists at the state house in Harare that more than 2.7 million people in Zimbabwe will go hungry this year, and 80 per cent of the country had received poor rains.

“Preliminary assessments show that Zimbabwe requires more than $2 billion towards various interventions we envisage in our national response,” Mr Mnangagwa said.

He said the government would prioritise winter cropping to boost reserves and work with the private sector to import grains.

El Nino is a naturally occurring weather phenomenon associated with a disruption of wind patterns that means warmer ocean surface temperatures in the eastern and central Pacific.

Since November, most provinces in Zimbabwe have experienced crop failure, with hotter areas declaring grains such as maize a write-off.

Humanitarian agencies, including the World Food Programme, which fed 270,000 people between January and March in four districts, have described the hunger situation as “dire,” calling on donors to provide more aid.

The drought in southern Africa has reached crisis levels, with Botswana and Angola to the west and Mozambique and Madagascar to the east also facing hunger.

Experts condemn NERC’s 300% electricity tariff hike

Some power experts have expressed their dissatisfaction with the 300 per cent increase in electricity tariffs approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

In separate interviews on Wednesday in Lagos, the experts lamented that such an increase would further burden electricity consumers across the nation.

The tariff hike was announced by Musiliu Oseni, the vice-chairman of NERC, in Abuja on Monday.

Mr Oseni clarified that the 300 per cent increase would specifically impact Band A consumers, who constitute only 15 per cent of the total electricity customers nationwide.

As a result, power distribution companies (DisCos) will be permitted to raise electricity prices to N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous rate of N68 for urban consumers, effective April 1.

Reacting to the development, Adeola Ilori, the national coordinator of the All Electricity Consumers Protection Forum, condemned the sudden tariff hike, asserting that it was implemented without due process.

Mr Ilori emphasised that the increase should have followed the prescribed procedures outlined in NERC’s regulatory directives, as mandated by law.

He said the magnitude of the increase, purportedly a minor review, was like a major review, necessitating thorough scrutiny and consultation with all stakeholders.

Mr Ilori hinted at potential legal action by the group to challenge the tariff hike, citing violations of the Electricity Act 2023 and consumer protection regulations.

Meanwhile, Lanre Elatuyi, an electricity market analyst, acknowledged the inevitability of the tariff increase, attributing it to fluctuations in the dollar and gas prices.

Mr Elatuyi explained that with the government unable to subsidise electricity for all consumers, the burden falls on those capable of bearing the actual cost of electricity, particularly Band A customers.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that Band A customers receive the promised hours of supply, urging strict adherence to service standards.

However, Chinedu Amah, founder of Spark Nigeria Ltd., raised concerns about the clarity and monitoring of Band A classification, warning of potential exploitation if not properly defined and regulated.

FG raises electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20-hour power supply

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved an increase in electricity tariff for customers under the Band A classification.

The Vice Chairman, NERC, Musliu Oseni, said the increase will see the customers paying N225 kilowatt per hour from the current N66.

PUNCH Online notes that customers under Band A are those who enjoy 20 hours of electricity supply daily.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Oseni said customers in Band A represent a 15 per cent of the 12 million electricity customers in the country.

He added that the commission had also downgraded some customers on the Band A to Band B due to the non-fulfillment of the required hours of electricity provided by the electricity distribution company.

He said, “We currently have 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 per cent now qualify as Band A feeders. These feeders only service 15 per cent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

“The commission has issued an order which is titled ‘April Supplementary Order’ and the commission allows a 235 kilowatt per hour.”

He added that the review will not affect customers on the other bands.Citing sources, Bloomberg had on Tuesday reported that power companies will be allowed to raise electricity prices to N200 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour from N68 for urban consumers.

It quoted people in the presidency with knowledge of the matter saying this was in a bid to attract new investment and slash about $2.3 billion spent to cap tariffs.

According to the news agency, “Nigerians will now have to pay $2.42 per one million British thermal units from the previous rate of $2.18 MMBtu.”

The development comes amid Monday’s announcement by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority of an increase in the price of natural gas, which is used to generate more than 70 per cent of electricity in Nigeria.

Homeless residents storm Lagos Assembly to protest non-compensation

About 500 residents of Oke-Egan Community, Eleko Area of Ajah in Lagos on Wednesday stormed the state House of Assembly complex, demanding compensation for the demolition of their houses.

The residents of the affected community displaying banners with bold inscriptions and placards venting their plight barricaded the Lagos House main gate in the early hours of Wednesday.

Some of the inscriptions read, “We have been demoralised, nowhere to go. “We want our property back.’’ Others include, “Our hearts bleed; “We now roam the streets with nowhere to stay; Our children are crying; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, your children are homeless; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, please come to our rescue.”

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Dr Taiwo Alalade, lamented that her entire family, including three toddlers and her elderly mother, had been sleeping out in the open after their house was demolished.

She said, “One of us has four buildings here. We have all the papers. They demolished all four buildings. Now, I don’t have anywhere to go. Sanwo-Olu should help us so that they will stop the demolition. We were not informed before they started demolishing our houses. We don’t know these people at all.

“I went to work. When I came back, I saw my house in ashes. This shirt I put on has been on me for three days now. All my brothers and sisters don’t have anywhere to go. All our belongings have been lost. Where do they want us to go? Where do we start from?

“The state government should tell us where they want us to go. They have succeeded in rendering us homeless. We have been sleeping outside since our house was burnt. If it’s raining, we only cover ourselves with a canopy.”

Another affected resident, Pastor Abiodun Ajayi, whose house in the area was also demolished, said it was painful for someone’s house to be demolished in his presence.

“My house was the first to be demolished and we couldn’t take anything out of the house. They got there at 3.00 a.m, and they started the demolition by 5.00 a.m. They came with thugs and we could not talk.

“We have been coming here, we wrote letters and Oba Akiolu of Lagos also wrote a letter on our behalf, because we want to be lawful,” Mr Ajayi said.

Addressing the protesters, the Majority Leader, Noheem Adams, accompanied by his colleagues – Oladipupo Ajomale, Fatai Mojeed and Tijani Suraju, commended them for their peaceful conduct.

Mr Noheem noted that their letter would be presented to the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, adding that the needful would be done to bring respite to them.

Eight in police net over murder of UNIMAID lecturer

The police in Borno State confirmed the arrest of eight suspects in connection with the alleged murder of, a lecturer in the Department of Physical Health Education at the University of Maiduguri, Dr Kamar Abdulkadir.

Mr Abdulkadir was murdered in his office on campus on Sunday by unknown attackers who sneaked into his office.

The victim was found on Monday with several injuries inflicted on his body by his killer. The police public relations officer, Nahun Daso, told journalists that the attackers also carted away the lecturer’s vehicle, phone and laptop.

“We reviewed the CCTV camera and saw them going out of the university with the deceased’s vehicle. However, the quality of the video was very poor so we could not see the number of people that were inside the car,” he said.

He explained that an investigation was still ongoing into the matter.

Reacting, Prof. Danjuma Gambo, the Director of Radio and Public Relations, who spoke on behalf of the vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdullahi Shugaba, said the police and other security agencies had launched an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death.

“In view of the gravity of the matter, management advises all staff and students to remain calm and go about their normal, legitimate business because the university is working closely with relevant security agencies to get to the root of the matter.

“Management also wishes to assure parents, guardians and other stakeholders that the university campus remains safe and secure for teaching, learning and community service.

Management appreciates the numerous messages of sympathy and support from all its stakeholders in this moment of grief,” Mr Gambo said.

Army hands over suspected fake soldier to police in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command says it has received a suspected fake soldier parading himself in public from the Nigerian Army.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the suspect has been handed over to the police while addressing newsmen on Wednesday.

Hundeyin said that on Sunday at about 1.50 p.m., a soldier attached to 243 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Ibereko Barracks Lagos, went to the Badagry Police Division with a letter of suspect transfer.

According to him, the soldier reported that on the same day, at about 1.43 a.m., the suspect simply identified as Silas, 25, was arrested at Ikoga Zebbe Area by troops of 243 deployed at Ikoga.

“The soldier stated that the suspect was dressed in a Woodland Camouflage T-Shirt at the time of his arrest.

“The soldier further said that the troops conducted a search in the suspect’s house and the following items were recovered.

“A pair of Woodland Camouflage uniform, one camouflage face cap, two camouflage t-shirts, one 81 Division Shoulder Badge and a camouflage three-quarter dress.

“The suspect claimed that the uniforms belonged to his friend. Investigation is ongoing,” he said.
