Truck crushes grandmother, granddaughter to death in Ogun

Barely 24 hours after a truck rammed into a vehicle and a pedestrian in the Lafenwa area of Ogun State killing four persons and injuring two, another truck has crushed two persons to death in the Papalanto area of the state.

The accident according to the spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, happened in the early hours of Friday. Akinbiyi attributed the cause of the accident which involved an Iveco Truck with number plate KJA 166 XJ and a Tricycle with number plate TRE 627 VP, to dangerous driving by the truck driver. He added that four people including two males and two females were involved in the accident with the two females crushed to death.

While narrating the accident, the TRACE spokesman added that the truck driver allegedly fled the scene after causing the damage.

He narrated, “According to an eyewitness account, the truck in an attempt to overtake the tricycle while both were in transit inbound Abeokuta, around Papalanto, dragged the tricycle along with it by the side in the process with the tricycle falling in its front before running over it, killing a grandmother and her granddaughter, who were the only occupants in the tricycle on the spot. “Regrettably, the truck driver escaped from the scene before being arrested.”

He added that the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families while warning motorists against dangerous driving.

“However, the bodies of the dead victims have been collected by the families of the victims while the injured tricycle driver has been rescued to an unknown hospital by a good samaritan. Moreover, the accident vehicles have been deposited at the Itori Divisional Police Command. “While TRACE and the Police commiserate with the families of the deceased, motorists are again charged to avoid dangerous and reckless driving given its attendant consequences,” Akinbiyi concluded.

Regional authorities on Friday announced that Russian strikes killed eight civilians across Ukraine.

The national police said the attacks killed two in the northeastern Sumy region.

Regional Governor Oleg Synegubov said that, further to the east, in the Kharkiv region bordering Russia, two civilians died in an attack.

13 dead, 4.5m affected by Bangladesh floods

At least 13 people have died and 4.5 million others have been affected by devastating floods in Bangladesh, according to a report from the disaster management and relief ministry released on Friday.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains, have swamped large parts of the low-lying nation, adding to the challenges faced by the new government following weeks of political turmoil.

The South Asian country, home to 170 million people and crisscrossed by hundreds of rivers, is frequently impacted by floods, making it one of the most vulnerable nations to climate change, according to the Global Climate Risk Index.

The ministry’s bulletin revealed that nearly 190,000 people have been evacuated to emergency relief shelters, with 11 of the country’s 64 districts affected by the rising waters.

The district of Feni, located approximately 100 kilometres (60 miles) northwest of the major port city of Chittagong, has been particularly hard hit.

“It’s a catastrophic situation here,” said Zahed Hossain Bhuiya, a 35-year-old rescue volunteer in Feni. “We are trying to rescue as many people as we can.”

Nigerian woman arrested in India for allegedly trafficking illicit substances

A Nigerian woman, Faith Racheal, has been arrested by Indian authorities in Delhi for allegedly smuggling and supplying a substantial quantity of psychotropic substances.

According to reports, Racheal was apprehended on August 14 in the Mehrauli area of the capital city.

Police reports stated that Racheal was found in possession of 3.87 kilograms of mescaline, a potent hallucinogenic drug with a high value on the international market. The seized quantity is estimated to be worth approximately Rs15 crore.

Racheal had initially arrived in India in August 2022 on a medical visa but had overstayed her visa period.

During her extended stay, she allegedly became involved with a Nigerian national engaged in drug smuggling, ultimately joining a narcotics cartel.

The police revealed that Racheal played a key role in facilitating the delivery of narcotics between couriers, utilising her connections within the cartel.

Mescaline, a naturally occurring psychedelic substance derived from the Mexican Peyote cactus and the San Pedro cactus native to Peru and Ecuador, has effects similar to those of LSD and psilocybin (magic mushrooms).

It is often used as a party drug and can be found in various forms, including powder, tablets, capsules, or liquid.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, Amit Kaushik stated that the drugs were smuggled inside packages of branded toffee and fish food, making detection more difficult.

Racheal’s arrest followed a tip-off, leading to a raid in the Mehrauli area, where the drugs were discovered.

Racheal remains in custody as the investigation continues, with authorities probing deeper into the network and her connections to the broader narcotics trade.

U.S. Congressman George Santos convicted of identity theft, wire fraud

Former U.S. Congressman George Santos, on Monday, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity fraud to avert a trial that would have nailed him with over 24 charges that included money laundering.

Mr Santos syphoned his campaign funds to pay for cosmetic procedures, OnlyFans subscriptions and luxury designer items from Ferragamo and Hermès.

Mr Santos admitted that his actions of stealing funds from political donors to pay for personal expenses betrayed the trust of his supporters and agreed to make a refund $373,000 of stolen funds.

“I betrayed the trust of my constituents and supporters,” Mr Santos admitted in a New York court on Monday. “I deeply regret my conduct, I fully accept responsibility for my actions, and I understand my actions have betrayed the trust of my supporters; I made misrepresentations so that the NRCC would spend money on my campaign.”

Mr Santos is due to be sentenced on February 7, 2025.

His programme was the first of its kind, blending hard-hitting interviews with audience participation, and it covered a wide range of topics, from politics to social issues to celebrity interviews.

FG condemns rise in attacks on humanitarian workers

The federal government says the “alarming increase’’ in attacks against humanitarian workers, particularly in Africa, has made the work of the heroes increasingly perilous.

Tijani Ahmed, the federal commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), stated this on Monday in Abuja at a news conference to commemorate the 2024 World Humanitarian Day.

The 2024 World Humanitarian Day theme is “Act for Humanity.”

Mr Ahmed emphasised the urgent need for the implementation of a framework for the protection of humanitarian workers amid a troubling rise in violent attacks.

He cited recent incidents across the continent, including in South Sudan, where aid workers have been abducted and killed, and in the Central African Republic, where humanitarian convoys have been ambushed.

Mr Ahmed lamented the situation in Nigeria, where between 2020 and 2024, 49 incidents were reported affecting 79 humanitarian workers.

The violence, according to him, included the tragic killing of an aid worker from Médecins du Monde and the attack on a United Nations Aid Facility in Borno State.

He said the violence resulted in the deaths of no fewer than 20 internally displaced persons.

“These attacks are not just crimes against individuals; they are blatant violations of international humanitarian law,” Mr Ahmed declared.

He said their protection was in line with the Geneva Conventions, which classify the intentional targeting of humanitarian workers as a war crime.

Mr Ahmed called for a renewed commitment from the global community to enforce these laws and end the cycle of impunity that allows such violence to persist.

“As a nation, Nigeria has been deeply affected by conflicts that have displaced millions and created an urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

“Yet, those who work tirelessly to bring relief often face life-threatening risks,’’ he said.

In addition to advocating for stricter enforcement of international humanitarian law, the commissioner urged the Nigerian government to strengthen its legal framework to prosecute those who commit the heinous acts.

He then called on all stakeholders to intensify their efforts to protect humanitarian workers and civilians in conflict zones, emphasising that protecting the individuals is a moral imperative.

Mr Ahmed also expressed his deepest gratitude to the humanitarian workers who continued to serve in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

The commissioner called on all Nigerians to stand together to defend the rights and dignity of every person, especially those most vulnerable.

He urged collective action to ensure that those who risk their lives to save others could do so without fear of violence or retribution.

Two brothers die in Niger mine collapse

Two brothers, identified as Zubairu Ibrahim and Sadiq Ibrahim, have died over the weekend after a mine collapsed in Kakaki village, located in the Paikoro local government area of Niger State.

The tragic incident followed three previous mine collapses in the Shiroro and Paikoro areas of the state in recent months.

The deceased brothers, aged 20 and 25, were said to have left home without informing their parents that they were heading to the mine to dig for solid minerals.

The father of the deceased brothers, Mallam Zubairu Ibrahim, said the family initially assumed the young men were out with friends but when they did not return, the family learned that the brothers had gone to the mine site, hoping to find gold or other valuable minerals.

He said he sent community members to search for his sons, and tragically, their bodies were found buried beneath the collapsed soil at the riverbank.

While speaking with officials from the state Ministry of Mineral Resources who paid a condolence and fact-finding visit to the village, Ibrahim lamented how he could cope with life after burying two sons in one day.

The team from the Ministry of Mineral Resources was led by the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Yunusa Mohammed Nahauni and directors, the Miners Association State Chapter Caretaker Chairman, as well as the Nigeria Union of Mines Workers.

The Permanent Secretary lamented that the death was avoidable if the community had abided with the Governor’s order suspending mining in the state.

He stressed that the directive suspending mining in the state is still in force as the ministry will continue to crack down on illegal mining operations, warning that anyone found violating the regulations would face legal consequences.

Nahauni, who expressed the government’s condolences, reiterated the need to determine the cause of the accident, urging the community to inform the ministry whenever they discover any mineral elements in their vicinity to receive proper guidance.

95-year-old man weds 90-year-old bride in Kenya

A 95-year-old Kenyan man on Sunday wedded his 90-year-old long-time sweetheart, six decades after they first met.

Ibrahim Mbogo was said to have walked down the aisle with Tabitha Wangui, his heartthrob, at a white wedding in a church on Sunday.

Mbogo said outside the church in Mukurweini, a town about a three-hour drive northeast of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, that they met and fell in love in 1960.

“We deliberated together and decided it would be great if we did a white wedding, we know in our Kikuyu custom that we are legally married, but since we are also Christians, we decided to do a church wedding,” he said.

The groom wore a smart grey suit and silver tie for their special day, while his new bride was dressed in a white hat with a cream brocade jacket over a white outfit.

Asked about their secret, the 90-year-old bride charged women to respect their husbands.

“You must respect your husbands, if you do that, then you will live as we have.

“Don’t do any wrong, and when you do, just apologize and seek forgiveness.”

Police shut down church in Abuja after members engaged in a free for all fight

Church service abruptly ended at the United Methodist Church in the Durumi area of the Federal Capital Territory on Sunday August 18, after congregants engaged in a serious fight.

Punch reports that the fight, which went on for hours, resulted in damage to some of the church’s property and required intervention from FCT command operatives to bring it under control.

Frantic efforts initially made by the police to stop the fight proved abortive until tear gas was released.

It was further gathered that the police locked the church, dismissed the members, and took some of the elders to the station for interrogation.

Narrating what transpired, a member of the church who spoke anonymously expressed displeasure over the conflict, saying that there had been a rift among the church elders concerning the decision to separate from their headquarters in the United States.

The member added that the conflict arose from the church headquarters legalizing practices that are foreign to Nigeria’s culture.

“Our headquarters is in America and they have legalised some practices that are not part of our culture. Some elders were of the view that we should pull out, and give the church another name. But another set of elders kicked against the move. This created a faction in the church. At a point, they wanted to go to court, but I cannot say why they did not end up going.

Today, while addressing the church during the service, our pastor announced that they would be heading to the court and expressed his wish that the church remain with the headquarters. That was what instigated the fight. I have never seen such a thing before in my life. The fight was so serious that when the police came they did not stop until they fired teargas. Some of the church elders were taken to the station for interrogation after the whole thing. “

Confirming the incident, theip FCT command police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, asked the church elders to visit his office on Monday, August 19.

Adeh said, “The CP has invited all the church elders to come to the command by 10 am tomorrow.“

We get N5,000 for each human head — Two grave robbers arrested in Oyo reveal

Two suspects found with a human head exhumed from a grave at Amuloko Area in Ibadan, Oyo State, have said that they are paid N5,000 for each head.

The suspects identified as Mustapha Bello and Damilare Oladele, were arrested by men of the Amotekun Corps.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the suspects were accosted at dawn on Monday by a night guard who saw them carrying a bag, and when challenged, Bello, who was the one carrying the bag, tried to struggle with the security man, which gave Oladele the chance to escape.

Bello was eventually subdued and handed over to Amotekun for investigation.

When the news went round the city with the video recording of Bello when he was caught, it was learnt that a law enforcement agent who had noticed the closeness of Bello and Oladele suspected Oladele of being the arrested suspect’s accomplice and challenged him same day in the evening

The crowd, which had gathered, was said to have started beating the suspect, leading to his pleas and confession to being part of the operation carried out to get the human head.

He was also immediately transferred to Amotekun for investigation.

In an interview with Sunday Tribune, Bello, a 32-year-old carpenter, claimed that one Saheed introduced him to the business.

“I’m an Ibadan indigene living in Labo area. It is true that I went with my partner to exhume a dead body and remove the head at Amuloko area,” he said.

“One Saheed was the one who brought me into this kind of work. He works as a security man. He asked me to follow him to work in a place when I told him I was not having money. He told me not to worry, promising to give me some money the following day. I asked him the kind of work we were going to do but he said he would let me know when we arrive the place.

“When we got to a gravesite in front of a residence at Ita Ege at about 1am, he opened up that we were there to get human head. We used cutlass and our hands to remove the mound of earth covering the grave. He removed the head and returned the remains into the grave.

“It is Saheed who used to sell the head. He used to give me N5,000 as my share

“I went to the last operation with another accomplice, Damilare. After cutting the head, I was the one carrying it in a sack on our way back home when I was arrested by local vigilante. My partner escaped, and I was handed over to Amotekun.”

Explaining his involvement, the second suspect said: “I am Damilare Oladele. I’m from Ibadan and I live at Oranyan. I’m 25 years old. I’m a barber. I was arrested for exhuming a buried corpse and severing its head. Mustapha and I started working together in February this year.

“Mustapha was the one who really knew about the operation and invited me. My role was to watch out for any approaching security man while he would be digging the grave to exhume the buried corpse.

“Mustapha discussed the matter with me when we were relaxing one day. He had been doing it. The first time, he told me to go out with him that night as there was a task to be carried out. I asked him of the kind of task, and he opened up to me that we were going to get a human head. He told me that the one he targeted was already dry as it had been buried for long and it would not be smelly when being carried by us. He promised me the payment of N5,000 as my share.”

Disclosing his gang’s mode of operation, Oladele said:

“We used to get to the area where we would get the human head at night at about 10 pm. We would hide in a place till after midnight when we would begin the exhumation at about 1 am.

“After the head had been removed, Mustapha would call me to cover the grave while he would go and hide the head. We would retire to our hiding spot and wait till dawn before we would go home.

“He was the one who would take the head to the buyer. After he had been paid, he would give me N5,000 as my share, except once when he gave me N10,000 because we went for a fresh head. I have worked with him five times.

“We did the last one at Amuloko in Ona Ara Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday. The place was described to Mustapha by one Afaa. They discussed it on the phone. The Afaa said that the corpse was recently buried.

“We went to work, removed the head and went to sleep in a nearby school until 5am when we left. Unfortunately for us, we met a night guard who sought to know what Mustapha was carrying. As they were dragging the issue with each other, I quickly took to my heels

I went to my shop and returned to where I live in the evening to find out how things went with Mustapha. It was the person he used to give the head for sale who came to me. His name is Saheed. Saheed is a native doctor, and he was the one who introduced the operation to Mustapha. He stopped doing it and was only collecting the severed heads from Mustapha and paying him for the job done. That was why Mustapha asked me to join him in doing the work.

“He was the one who informed me that Mustapha had been handed over to Amotekun. He said he would be using his phone to monitor things.

“I was on my way back to my shop when I was seen by a security personnel. I learnt that the crowd recorded Mustapha’s arrest on video and posted it.

“The post was seen by the security agent and on seeing me, knowing very well that I was a close friend of Mustapha, he called me to come and take a look. He said that he believed I worked together with my friend. That was how the people around started beating me. I was handed over to Amotekun.”

Oladele confessed to smoking hemp and drinking alcohol but said that he stopped taking marijuana last year, sticking only to cigarettes.
