Earthquake hits Los Angeles

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), millions of people were thrown into panic mode after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck several locations in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The New York Times reported that the earthquake struck around 12:20 p.m. local time and was centred in Pasadena, about five miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.

An aftershock of 2.1 magnitude followed the earthquake, the USGS reported. One hundred miles away from Pasadena, the quake’s effects were felt in Bakersfield, San Diego and Joshua Tree National Park.

According to the USGS, the earthquake’s epicentre was in El Sereno, a small neighbourhood in northeast Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, no reports of major damages have been recorded.
The Los Angeles Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol said they had not received any reports of accidents or damage related to the quake.

“It was a pretty good jolt,” said Susan Hough, a seismologist with the USGS who was on the California Institute of Technology campus in Pasadena when the earthquake struck. “It was clearly a decent shake, though not huge.”

Scientists have yet to determine whether the earthquake was caused by the Puente Hills Fault, which runs through the Los Angeles basin into northern Orange County, but it appeared that the earthquake occurred close to the fault.

The fault line with the capacity to cause devastating earthquakes was discovered by scientists in 1999 and was responsible for the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake that killed eight people.

Two stabbed in London’s Leicester Square

Two people were stabbed in London’s Leicester Square, a popular tourist destination.

The victims, an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman have been hospitalised, according to Westminster police.

New York Times reports that authorities have arrested a man who is currently in custody.

Police confirmed that they do not believe there are any other suspects involved in the attack.

“We don’t believe there are any outstanding suspects,” the police said.

A courageous hero, identified as Abdullah, intervened to stop the attacker.

Abdullah, who has worked at the TWG Tea shop for around eight months, said he “heard a scream” and saw there was a person in his early to mid-30s “stabbing a kid.”

“I jumped on him, held the hand in which he was [carrying] a knife, and just put him down on the floor and just held him and took the knife away from him,” he said.

“Then a couple of more people joined as well, and we just held him until the police came, it took maybe three to four minutes for the police to arrive and then they just took him into custody.”

Police praised the bravery of those who stepped in to help.

The two attacked victims were eventually identified as mother and daughter.

“This is a horrific incident and our thoughts are with the victims and their family,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah.

“We will continue to provide support to them over the coming days and weeks.

“I would like to pay tribute to the members of the public, including staff from local businesses, who bravely intervened in this incident.

“They put themselves at risk and showed the best of London in doing so.”

A police cordon was put in place surrounding the double doors of the TWG Tea shop, which is beside the Lego store and in front of the M&Ms store.

A witness, who performs as Darth Vader, said he saw a young, white, skinny male dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans putting the girl in a headlock and stabbing her, Sky News reported.

The man, who gave his name as Desmond, 45, said, “It was so terrible, I’ve never seen a thing like that. I was heartbroken, I saw the woman screaming with all her strength.”

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said they were called at 11.36am to reports of a stabbing at Leicester Square.

“We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, and an incident response officer. We also dispatched members of our tactical response unit,” they said.

“We treated a child and an adult at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre.”

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police said the girl would require hospital treatment but her injuries were not life-threatening, while her mother suffered minor injuries.

The force said a 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene and officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack.

There is no suggestion the incident is terror-related and police don’t believe the suspect and the victims are known to each other.

Joe Biden admits Democrats forced him out of the presidential race

U.S. President, Joe Biden has opened up about his decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential election.

The 81-year-old shocked the world when he revealed, via a letter posted to his X account, that he would not be seeking re-election for a second term and, instead, would be endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to stand against Donald Trump.

It followed weeks of increasingly public pressure from top Democrats including former President Barack Obama — to drop out of the race, amid concerns about his age and mental fitness following the disastrous June 27 debate

Biden appeared in an interview with CBS News’ Bob Costa on Sunday, August 11 in his first interview since he chose not to run for re-election.

During the interview, Biden revealed that pressure from fellow Democrats contributed to his decision.

The 81-year-old also notably name-dropped former house speaker Nancy Pelosi, with the two having not spoken for some time.

“Look, polls we had showed it was a neck-and-neck race, it would have been down to the wire,” he said.

“A number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was going to hurt them in the races. And I was concerned if I stayed in the race, that would be the topic, you’d be interviewing me about why did Nancy Pelosi say -why did – and I thought it’d be a real distraction,” he said.

“Number two, when I ran the first time, I thought of myself as being a transition President. I can’t even say how old I am — it’s hard for me to get out of my mouth, and uh, but things got moving so quickly it didn’t happen.

And the combination was, that I thought it was the critical issue for me still is, not a joke, maintaining this democracy.

“But I thought it was important because although I, it’s a great honour being President, I think I have an obligation to the country to do what I, the most important thing you can do, and that is we must, we must, we must defeat Trump.”

Biden, who has kept a low profile since dropping out, also suggested during the CBS interview there may not be a peaceful transfer of power in January 2025.

“If Trump wins, no I’m not confident at all,” he said, before correcting himself.

“I mean if Trump loses, I’m not confident at all. He means what he says, we don’t take him seriously. He means it, all this stuff about, if we lose it’ll be a bloodbath, it’ll be a stolen [election]. Look what they’re trying to do now, in the local election districts where people count the votes. Putting people in place in states that they’re going to count the votes, right? You can’t love your country only when you win.”

Biden claimed that Trump who narrowly survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13 was “a genuine danger to American security”.

“Mark my words, if he wins … watch what happens,” he said.

Iran’s Vice President resigns 11 days after appointment and gives reasons

Iran’s Vice-President Mohammed Javad Zarif has resigned from President Massud Pezeshkian’s cabinet just 11 days after his appointment.

He took to X (formerly Twitter) to explain his decision.

“I am not satisfied with my work and regret that I have not been able to fulfill expectations,” he said on X.

He also hinted that the selection of ministers for Pezeshkian ‘s new cabinet had been the reason for his decision.

According to Mr Zarif, at least seven of the 19 ministers nominated were not his first choice

Zarif was President Pezeshkian’s right-hand man during his presidential election campaign and, due to his popularity, also played a key role in Pezeshkian ‘s victory.

However, after the election, Zarif and a group of experts were to compile a list of candidates for government posts who would implement promised reforms.

Pezeshkian presented a list on Sunday, August 11, which observers believe did not match the plans and promises of reform.

Observers assume that Iran’s hardline arch-conservative faction imposed some ministers on Pezeshkian.

Zarif was also one of the key figures for Pezeshkian in the implementation of his new foreign policy line.

Zarif was the country’s chief diplomat between 2013 and 2021 and was able to conclude the international nuclear agreement with the six world powers in 2015 as head of the Iranian negotiating team. With him and a new team of diplomats, Pezeshkian hoped to resume the nuclear negotiations so that the sanctions that are paralyzing the Iranian economy could be lifted.

Zarif’s resignation is the second crisis for Pezeshkian since he took office at the end of July, following the killing of the Palestinian militant Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran
