The said failure resulted in the lift car dropping and crashing into the basement pit. Unfortunately, one of the technicians in the team did not survive the incident.
Three other technicians suffered minor injuries and have been taken to the hospital for check up/ treatment.”
He further added that, “the head office of the company has been informed and their representatives have arrived to take charge of the situation while the Police have also been informed.”
Nigeria expects to get its first batch of Covid-19 vaccines by the end of this month as part of its plan to inoculate 40% of the population this year and a further 30% next year, the head of the country’s primary healthcare agency, Faisal Shuaib, has said.
The first batch would contain 100,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, obtained through the global vaccine-sharing scheme known as Covax.
Nigeria will first inoculate frontline health workers, first responders, national leaders, people vulnerable to coronavirus and the elderly, Mr Shuaib said.
The country hopes to get 42 million vaccines to cover one-fifth of its population through the scheme, Mr Shuaib added.
The World Health Organization set up the Covax scheme to help poorer countries obtain Covid-19 vaccines amid widespread concerns that wealthier nations would snap them up.
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said last week that the country expected to get vaccines through Covax scheme by the second quarter of 2021, following the initial payment of 283 million rand ($19.3; £14.1m).
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize subsequently said that the government was also in talks with private pharmaceutical companies to obtain vaccines by next month.
South Africa’s government has been under intense pressure to roll out an inoculation programme following the discovery of a faster spreading variant of the virus.
South Africa has recorded more than 1.1 million Covid-19 cases, the highest in Africa.
Nigeria has so far recorded close to 100,000 cases. More than 1,200 new cases were recorded on Monday, its highest ever.
Nigeria has a population of abut 200 million, the biggest in Africa.
Reports emerging from major news outlets in United States have confirmed that President Donald Trump didn’t give the order for the deployment of National Guard to assist local law enforcement in enforcing law and order following invasion of Capitol Hill by pro-Trump protesters.
Large crowd of Trump supporters had earlier stormed US Congress and White house in a latest bid to protest against the election that saw Biden certified as winner, gaining access and occupying the building.
President Trump by virtue of his office is the Commander of the US Armed Forces and the power to order for deployment of troops rest solely on him.
In a report made available by New York Media, defense and administration officials had confirmed it was Vice President Mike Pence who gave the order to deploy the D.C. National Guard.
The development has raised a lot of questions as to why Donald Trump who is till the commander in chief, did not approve the order for the deployment of the troops.
There are insinuations that Trump was not involved in the discussion to deploy the troops, leading to speculations that he may have been stepped aside as reports said he was unwilling to give the order to restore law and order.
Twitter and Facebook suspended Donald Trump on Wednesday over posts accused of inflaming violence in the US Capitol, as social media scrambled to respond to mayhem by supporters buying into his baseless attacks on the integrity of the election.
The unprecedented sanctions came after the president took to social media to repeat his numerous false claims about fraud and other impropriety in the election he lost to Joe Biden.
“This is an emergency situation and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including removing President Trump’s video,” said Facebook vice president of integrity Guy Rosen.
“We removed it because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence.”
Facebook barred Trump from posting at the social network or its Instagram service for 24 hours, saying his messages were promoting violence.
Trump
Trump’s falsehoods, ranging from specific allegations to broad conspiracy theories, also prompted Facebook to change a label added to posts aiming to undermine the election results.
The new label reads: “Joe Biden has been elected president with results that were certified by all 50 states. The US has laws, procedures, and established institutions to ensure the peaceful transfer of power after an election.”
An activist group calling itself a mock Facebook oversight board said sanctions against Trump at the social network were long overdue.
“This is too little, too late,” the group said in a statement.
“Donald Trump has breached Facebook’s own terms and conditions multiple times. His account is not just a threat to democracy but to human life.”
The crackdown came after Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol in an attack that led to one woman being shot and killed by police, interrupting congressional debate over Biden’s election victory.
The assault came after the president had urged supporters to march on the seat of government during a speech outside the White House in which he alleged baselessly that the election had been stolen from him.
He later released a video on social media in which he repeated the false claim — even telling the mob “I love you.” YouTube removed the video in line with its policy barring claims challenging election results.
The video is seen below;

Twitter said Trump’s messages were violations of the platform’s rules on civic integrity and that any future violations “will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account.”
The messaging platform said Trump’s account would be locked for 12 hours and that if the offending tweets were not removed, “the account will remain locked.”
Facebook said it would search for and remove content which praised the storming of the Capitol or encouraged the violence. The platform said it would seek to take down additional calls for protests, including peaceful ones, if they violated a curfew imposed by the city of Washington, or any attempts to “re-stage” the storming of Congress.
“The violent protests in the Capitol today are a disgrace,” a Facebook spokesperson said.
“We prohibit incitement and calls for violence on our platform. We are actively reviewing and removing any content that breaks these rules.”
Facebook maintained that it was in contact with law enforcement officials and continued to enforce bans on QAnon conspiracy group, militarized social movements, and hate groups.
A #StormTheCapitol hashtag was blocked at Facebook and Instagram, according to the internet titan.

The 2021 Grammy Awards has been postponed due to coronavirus concerns, say the organisers.
The ceremony, one of the music industry’s biggest awards, was due to take place on 31 January.
The event will now take place on 14 March, due to rising infection numbers in Los Angeles and the state of California.
Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa led the nominations for this years awards, which were announced in November.
“Nothing is more important than the health and safety of those in our music community and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly on producing the show,” said a statement from the Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys.
It is unclear whether comedian Trevor Noah, who was set to host the show, will still take part in this year’s ceremony.
The Grammys’ new date clashes with the previously-announced Screen Actors’ Guild awards. The actors union said it was “extremely disappointed” by the scheduling conflict.
“We announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July with the intent to give the greatest possible scheduling consideration for other awards shows,” it said in a statement. “We expect the same consideration from sister organizations throughout the industry.”
It said it was in conversation with the Recording Academy in an attempt to resolve the situation.
This year’s Grammys were already due to be a virtual event, in line with other recent award shows, such as the MTV VMAs and the Billboard Awards.
Other major ceremonies, including the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the Brit Awards have already been postponed.
Lovers of the music industry’s biggest award will exercise patience till March.
Justice Lateefat Okunnu of the Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere yesterday convicted and sentenced a former Managing Director of the defunct Finbank Plc, Okey Nwosu, to three years imprisonment.
Justice Okunnu handed down the sentence after she found Nwosu and three other directors of the bank guilty of stealing over N18 billion from Finbank Plc, now First City Monument Bank (FCMB).
Nwosu was convicted alongside three former directors of the defunct bank, Dayo Famoroti, Danjuma Ocholi and Agnes Ebubedike.
The convicts were first arraigned in 2013 on 26 counts of stealing and illegal conversion to the tune of N10,934,704,402 before Justice Okunnu, but the Court of Appeal had on November 21, 2013, quashed the charges pressed against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and set them free.
The EFCC, however, appealed to the Supreme Court, which upheld the appeal and ordered Nwosu and others to return to the high court for trial.
Delivering her judgment on Tuesday, Justice Okunnu sentenced Nwosu and Famoroti to three years’ imprisonment and ordered them to make a refund.
The judge also sentenced Ocholi to 12 months’ imprisonment, while Ebubedike was sentenced to six months’ community service.

Yesterday, both President Donald Trump and Joe Biden were in Georgia to rally behind their two chosen candidates respectively for their Senatorial contests. But as it is known President Trump actually had another motive besides the electioneering campaign.
The grudging President also wants his two candidates to win the Senatorial election so that he might later use them against swearing-in Joe Biden on the 20th of this month.

It’s no more news that some universities in the country have resumed academic activities while others are to resume on 11th of January and some will also resume on the 18th of January, 2021.
Some students will be wondering why there are changes in resumption date for each university. The reason for the delay or extension in resumption date is mostly due to rate of infection of the deadly coronavirus. Each state has a record of the number of daily infection which also determine the resumption date for schools.
Also, some states in the country are experiencing insurgency, bandits and attacks, therefore the government wants to ensure the security of students before allowing them to resume.
However, there’s are two institutions that will resume late than others. Theses universities have officially announced their resumption date and this means there is no changing of dates.
One of them is the University of Abuja, (UNIABUJA). The university of Abuja is set to resume on the first day of February, 2021 unlike most tertiary institutions in the country that are to resume on or before 18th of January. This was announced by the University’s directorate of academic affairs as endorsed by the Vice chancellor of the institution.
It is seconded by the University of Benin. Academic activities are scheduled to commence at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), on Monday, February 1, 2021. The University’s Senate sat on Monday the 4th of January, 2021 and concluded that students should retire to campus on January 30th, 2021 as lectures will begin on 1st February, 2021.
This therefore implies that students of UNIBEN and UNIABUJA are resuming on the 1st day of February for the first semester of the 2019/2020 academic session which was disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak and academic strike.
From late March to December 2020, Nigerian public universities were locked due to the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
After months of negotiations, the lecturers’ union finally suspended the strike on Wednesday, December 23.
However, schools could not resume immediately as the nation had already entered the festive period filled with public holidays. Similarly, the federal government also directed all universities in the country to suspend academic activities due to the spread of COVID-19.
The directive was issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) via a circular signed by its deputy executive secretary administration, Chris Maiyaki.
However, some universities have now announced their resumption dates. Legit.ng in this piece lists three public universities that are set to resume academic activities in January.

University of Ilorin : The management of the University of Ilorin has declared that the institution would resume full academic activities for the Rain semester on January 11, 2021. After 9-month-old strike, Nigerian university cancels academic session, announces fresh resumption date The university explained that lectures will, however, be delivered online in line with the directives of the NUC.
Bayero University Kano (BUK) : The Senate of Bayero University Kano (BUK) has approved the cancellation of 2019-2020 academic sessions. According to the Senate, new academic session for undergraduate students will begin on Monday, January 18, 2021 as the first semester, while the second semester will begin on Monday, May 3, 2021. For the postgraduate students, the Senate slated Monday, January 18 as the date to resume for the first semester while the second semester will begin on Tuesday, June 1.
University of Benin in Benin City (UNIBEN) : All returning students (old and new) of the University of Benin in Benin City (UNIBEN), Edo state, have been also directed by the management of the institution to resume for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions on January 30, 2021.
The former head of China’s state-owned Huarong Asset Management company was sentenced to death Tuesday for bribe-taking, in one of the harshest punishments for economic crimes in recent years.
Lai Xiaomin, 58, was also found guilty by the Second Intermediate People’s Court of Tianjin of lesser charges including corruption and bigamy.
Life sentences and suspended death sentences commuted to life after two years are frequently handed down in corruption cases, but death sentences without the chance of reprieve have become rare in recent years.
Such sentences are automatically appealed to China’s highest court.
Lai was placed under investigation by the ruling Communist Party’s corruption watchdog in 2018 and expelled from the party later the same year.
In its ruling, the Tianjin court cited the “especially enormous” size of the bribes Lai accepted, saying they exceeded 600 million yuan ($93 million) in one instance.
In total, it said Lai collected or sought to collect 1.79 billion yuan (US$260 million) over a decade in exchange for abusing his position to make investments, offer construction contracts, help with promotions and provide other favours.
He was also convicted of embezzling more than 25 million yuan (almost $4 million) in state assets and starting a second family while still married to his first wife.
Although Lai provided useful details about malfeasance by his subordinates, the seriousness of his bribe taking and “degree of harm caused to society” were not enough to win him leniency, the court said in its ruling.
“Lai Xiaomin is lawless and greedy in the extreme,” the ruling said. “His crimes are extremely serious and must be punished severely under law.”
Huarong is one of four entities created in the 1990s to buy non-performing loans from banks, helping to revive the state-owned finance industry. Such asset management companies expanded into banking, insurance, real estate finance and other fields.
Lai was accused of squandering public money, illegally organising banquets, engaging in sexual dealings with multiple women and taking bribes, the anti-corruption agency said in 2018.
Investigators seized hundreds of millions of yuan (tens of millions of dollars) in cash from Lai’s properties, the Chinese business news magazine Caixin reported in 2018.
Lai was one of hundreds of officials at government agencies, state companies and the military who have been detained in an anti-corruption crackdown launched in 2012
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has approved over 50 per cent hike in electricity tariff payable by customers of the 11 Distribution Companies, DisCos.
This is coming just two months after it finally implemented a much opposed hike in November 2020.
According to a revised Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) signed by the new Chairman of NERC, Engr. Sanusi Garba, on December 30, 2020, and sighted Tuesday, the new tariff increase took effect on January 1, 2021, and supersedes the previous Order NERC/2028/2020.
In the new Order NERC/225/2020, the commission said it considered the 14.9% inflation rate rise in November 2020, foreign exchange of N379.4/$1 as of December 29, 2020, available generation capacity, US inflation rate of 1.22% and the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of the power firms to raise the tariff.
The revised Service Based Tariff (SBT) also saw increase in the rates payable by all classes of electricity users unlike the one of November 2020, that exempted low power getters.
This is effective till June 2021 while a Cost Reflective Tariff (CRT) expected to raise the new cost higher will be activated from June to December 2021, the NERC Order revealed.
Daily Trust had reported that in December, 2020, NERC notified that it had begun a review for another tariff, which has been completed and had taken effect from January 1, 2021.
NERC had raised tariff for the DisCos in September but that drew outrages from customers and the organised labour, prompting the federal government to suspend it while parties dialogued.
By November 1, 2020, the suspended tariff was implemented after some discounts were given for customers who get 12 hours and above power supply daily.
However, those with less than 12 hour supply did not get a tariff hike, according to the NERC order of November 2020.
Japan’s top-ranked sumo wrestler Hakuho has tested positive for coronavirus.
The Mongolian-born grand champion took a Covid-19 test after losing his sense of smell, the Japan Sumo Association (JSA) said.
The news comes as Japan considers declaring a state of emergency in and around Tokyo, where virus cases have surged.
It has imposed relatively relaxed restrictions so far, with a more contained outbreak than some countries.
Activities like sumo wrestling have continued despite the pandemic, but cases have emerged in the sport too. In May, a 28-year-old Japanese sumo wrestler died from organ failure caused by the virus.
Hakuho – the longest-serving yokozuna or top-ranked wrestler in Japan – had been preparing for the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, due to start in Tokyo on Sunday.
He will now seek the advice of specialists while the other wrestlers in his stable will also be tested, JSA said.

Also on Tuesday, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said that a state of emergency declaration for Tokyo and the surrounding area would be decided on Thursday, according to local media reports.
Japan has recorded nearly 249,000 coronavirus cases and more than 3,500 deaths since the start of the pandemic. While the figures are vastly lower than countries like the UK and US, the Japanese government has been concerned by what it has described as a “very severe” third wave of infections.

Also, a total of 11 people were kidnapped by the bandits on the same day at Dan Kungi village in the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, PR Nigeria reports. This was contained in a statement by the chairman of the Birnin-Gwari Progressives Union, Mr Salisu Haruna, on Monday.
Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna Highway
The statement titled;
“Alarming rise of banditry and killings in Birnin Gwari general area,’ added that more than 40 persons were abducted by the bandits between December 20, 2020 and January 4, 2021, adding that “some of them (abductees), have been reported terribly ill.”
The statement read in part, “The New Year 2021 has begun in sorrow and tears for the people of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State. “On Sunday, 3rd January, 2021, bandits laid siege on innocent travellers at Zankoro, along dreaded Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna Highway, killing nine people (including three infants) that are on their way for a ceremony at Doka, Birnin-Gwari LGA”. “Similarly, the bandits came out today, Monday, January 4, 2021 at the same Zankoro around 9am, shooting indiscriminately and abducting unspecified number of people and wounding six others that are now receiving treatment at Buruku”.
“In the last two weeks, bandits terrorising the people of Birnin Gwari, especially those travelling along Birnin Gwari-Funtua and Birnin Gwari-Kaduna highways have become intensely aggressive as they continue to kill and abduct innocent citizens unabated”. “There are more than 40 abductees currently at the mercy of the bandits who were kidnapped between December 20, 2020 and Monday January 4, 2021; some of them have been reported terribly ill”.
“A total of nine innocent travellers were killed at Zankoro along Birnin Gwari-Kaduna highway on Sunday, January 3, 2021. A total of 11 people were kidnapped at Dan Kungi village on Sunday January 3, 2021″. “BEPU, therefore, calls on the government to deploy immediate response squad to mount offensive operations along Birnin Gwari, Kaduna and Birnin Gwari-Funtua highways.”
It comes after the UK reported a record 58,784 cases on Monday, as well as a further 407 deaths within 28 days of a positive test.
Announcing England’s lockdown, Mr Johnson said hospitals were under “more pressure from Covid than at any time since the start of the pandemic”.
He ordered people to stay indoors other than for limited exceptions – such as essential medical needs, food shopping, exercise and work that cannot be done at home – and said schools and colleges should move to remote teaching for the majority of students until at least half term.
And he said all care home residents and their carers, everyone aged 70 and over, all frontline health and social care workers, and the clinically extremely vulnerable will be offered one dose of a vaccine by mid-February.
While the rules become law in the early hours of Wednesday, people should follow them now, the PM added.
Scotland’s lockdown, which is for the mainland and Skye, will also see schools closed to pupils, places of worship closed and group exercise banned.
“It is no exaggeration to say that I am more concerned about the situation we face now than I have been at any time since March last year,” Ms Sturgeon said.
Wales, which has been in a national lockdown since 20 December, said schools and colleges would shut until 18 January for most pupils.
South Korea is trying to secure the release of a tanker seized by Iran.
The MT Hankuk Chemi was seized by Iranian forces near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and its crew of 20 detained. Iran said the ship had violated environmental rules.
The incident comes amid tensions over Iranian funds frozen in South Korean banks because of US sanctions.
A senior South Korean official was due in Iran in the coming days to discuss the issue.
But an official told Reuters news agency that “the plan is unclear” as to whether Vice Foreign Minister Choi Jong-kun’s visit would still go ahead.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha told reporters that South Korea was making diplomatic efforts to try to secure the release of the tanker and its crew, which includes sailors from Indonesia, Myanmar, South Korea and Vietnam.
“We have been trying to figure out what happened through the Iranian Embassy in South Korea and the South Korean Embassy in Iran and continuing to make efforts to address this situation,” she said, according to Yonhap news agency.
South Korea’s Defence Ministry on Tuesday said it had dispatched its anti-piracy unit to waters near the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping route in the Gulf region, to “ensure the safety” of South Korean nationals.
In a statement, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said the chemical tanker’s seizure was over a “purely technical issue and due to polluting the sea”.
“I would begin by saying that, President Trump’s attitude to the result of the presidential election which was carried out last year, is so uncalled for. He keeps claiming that the election was rigged and have been trying all he can ever since to distract people from the fact that he lost the election”.
With just few days to inauguration, president elect, Joe Biden and his vice, Harris, would be inaugurated into power, and until then, there is nothing trump can do about it. That’s if he doesn’t provide a tangible evidence.
Hillary Clinton
Well, Hillary Clinton has just recently slammed the action of Donald trump in a new tweet she made hours ago;
“What we’re seeing right now is a president with nothing left to lose and only one goal, to distract people from the fact that he lost. He doesn’t care that the costs are America’s health, security, and our very democracy.”
