Saudi Arabia join Lagos train for Fencing World Cup

Fencing top country Saudi Arabia has joined the train to Lagos for the Fencing World Cup holding from December 14 to 15.

The Saudi team is the latest to register for the International Fencing Federation (FIE)-ranking tournament.

In addition to Saudi Arabia, countries such as U.S, Hong Kong, Benin Republic, Greece, Togo, Senegal, Angola, and Ghana have confirmed their participation. Kenya has also recently shown interest in joining the tournament.

Charterhouse Lagos, a prestigious international school in Nigeria, and host of the championship has also confirmed its readiness for the tournament.

John Todd, Director of Education at Charterhouse Lagos, expressed excitement about Nigeria hosting this global event and pledged the school’s commitment to fostering the sport’s growth in the country.

“Charterhouse Lagos is the first British independent school in West Africa, part of the 400-year history of Charterhouse School in the UK. Fencing is a traditional part of the UK independent school program, so this is a natural fit for us,” Todd explained.

He continued: “We have world-class facilities and have been seeking partnerships with top-tier sports organizations. Our facilities are unmatched in Lagos, making this partnership a natural choice. We plan to bring in our fencing coach and equipment as part of our long-term strategy. We fully support the Fencing Federation of Nigeria’s efforts to bring the Commonwealth Championship to Nigeria. This partnership aligns with our core values and offers an excellent opportunity for our school to nurture talent.”

Namibians elect Nandi-Ndaitwah as first female president

Namibian Vice-President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo) party has been elected the first female president of the Southern African country.

Namibia’s electoral commission on Tuesday announced Mrs Nandi-Ndaitwah as the winner of the election that was held on November 27.

The announcement of the result was delayed until Tuesday as voting was extended in some places due to technical glitches and ballot paper shortages.

According to the result by the electoral commission, Ms Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, polled 57 per cent of the votes, surpassing the 50 per cent requirement to win. Her challenger, Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party, came second with roughly 26 per cent of votes.

In the National Assembly election, Mrs Nandi-Ndaitwah-led SWAPO won a majority of seats, 51 of the 96, while the IPC won 20 seats.

“The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability,” Ms Nandi-Ndaitwah said after being declared president-elect on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the IPC has vowed to challenge the election’s outcome in court, describing the process as “deeply flawed.”

Ms Nandi-Ndaitwah’s victory now extends SWAPO’s 34-year rule in Namibia since it led the country to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990.

NBA slams police over illegal arrest of lawyer Farotimi

The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the arrest of a lawyer, Dele Farotimi, by the Nigerian Police Force over allegations bordering on libel.

In a statement Tuesday night, the NBA president, Afam Osigwe, also decried the alleged invasion of Farotimi’s law firm and the harassment of lawyers and staff.

NBA described the police actions as “a troubling breach of the rule of law and the sanctity of the legal profession.”

It said that while the police had the authority to investigate crimes, such power must be exercised within the confines of the law and concerning offences recognised under Nigerian law.

“We must reiterate that the alleged offence of libel, for which Dele Farotimi was reportedly arrested, is not recognised as a criminal offence under the laws of Lagos State.

“The Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011 repealed the criminalisation of defamation by omitting it from its provisions. This progressive legislative move aligns with global best practices, which treat defamation as a civil wrong rather than a criminal offence.

“The Supreme Court in Aviomoh v. Commissioner of Police & Anor (2021) affirmed this position. Justice Helen Ogunwumiju, JSC, unequivocally held that defamation ceased to be a criminal offence in Lagos State following the enactment of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011,” said the NBA.

The statement added that this “authoritative pronouncement leaves no room for doubt” and that under Sections 4 and 24 of the Police Act 2020, the force “is mandated to act only about conduct that constitutes a criminal offence under Nigerian law.”

NBA added, “Arresting individuals for non-criminal matters, such as defamation in Lagos State, is not only unlawful but also a blatant violation of the principles of legality and the rule of law.”

It also expressed concern over the reported invasion of Mr Farotimi’s law firm and the harassment of lawyers and staff.

“Reports that phones were confiscated from lawyers and staff during this invasion highlight a severe disregard for the sanctity of legal practice and the constitutional rights of individuals.

“The legal profession is a cornerstone of justice and democracy, and any attempt to undermine its independence is a direct assault on the rule of law. The NBA unequivocally condemns the invasion of Mr Farotimi’s law firm, the harassment of its lawyers and staff, and the unlawful seizure of their phones,” the statement stressed.

It pointed out that such actions violate the constitutional right to dignity and privacy and affront the legal profession’s independence.

“We, therefore, demand the immediate release of Dele Farotimi, as his arrest lacks any basis under the laws of Lagos state. The authorities must swiftly launch an investigation into the invasion of his law firm, with the findings made public and those responsible held accountable.

“We urge law enforcement agencies to prioritise the principles of legality, fairness, and respect for human rights in their operations. These principles are foundational to justice, democracy, and the protection of citizens’ freedoms,” NBA added.

UK to deport popular Nigerian pastor, Tobi Adegboyega

The British Government is set to deport popular pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, to Nigeria after losing his case against deportation at the immigration tribunal.

The UK government had shut down his church, SPAC Nation, after investigations exposed a misuse of funds by the church leadership.

It was gathered that the UK authorities closed the church after Adegboyega failed to properly account for more than £1.87 million of outgoings and operating with a lack of transparency.

However, according to The Telegraph, an immigration tribunal ruled that he should be deported back to Nigeria after investigations.

After arriving on a visitor’s visa in 2005, Adegboyega has lived in the UK unlawfully ever since.

In 2019, the pastor applied for leave to remain under ECHR’s right to a family life.

His application was initially dismissed by a first-tier immigration tribunal before he appealed.

Having been married to a British woman, the pastor claimed deportation would breach his right under the European Convention of Human Rights to a family life and failed to consider his community work with SPAC.

His legal team described him as a ‘charismatic’ community leader of a large, well-organised church who had ‘intervened in the lives of many hundreds of young people, predominantly from the black communities in London, to lead them away from trouble’.

Politicians including former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and senior figures within the Metropolitan Police had ‘lauded’ his work, he claimed, but no testimony by them was submitted to the court.

However, the Home Office contended ‘all is not as it seems’ and dragged him before an immigration tribunal.

However, according to the judgment as quoted by The Telegraph, the tribunal said evidences against the Nigerian pastor were taken to consideration.

The judgment reads, “Various manifestations of [Mr Adegboyega’s] church have been closed down, by either the Charity Commission or the High Court, because of concerns over its finances and lack of transparency.

“Former members of the church have alleged that it is a cult, in which impoverished young people are encouraged to do anything they can to donate money, including taking out large loans, committing benefit fraud and even selling their own blood.

“It is alleged that the church leadership lead lavish lifestyles and there have, it is said, been instances of abuse. The [Home Office’s] case before us was that all of this needs to be taken into account when evaluating whether [Mr Adegboyega] is in fact of real value to the UK.”

Speaking at the tribunal, Adegboyega said that claims that his chruch was a cult was unfounded and attacks on him and the church were politically motivated.

He also maintained no one had ever faced criminal charges over his church’s finances, adding that his deportation would breach his human rights.

However, the tribunal was told the Charity Commission concluded “there had been serious misconduct and/or mismanagement in the administration of the charity which was sustained over a substantial period of time.”

The tribunal also found Adegboyega’s evidence to be “hyperbolic in many instances’ and had ‘sought to grossly inflate his influence.”

The tribunal concluded, “We are not satisfied that the good work that SPAC Nation undertakes generally would collapse or even significantly suffer should the appellant be required to leave the UK.

“Weighing all of the foregoing in the balance we conclude that the decision to refuse leave to remain was wholly proportionate.

“Mr Adegboyega seeks to rely on family and private life relationships, all of which have been established whilst he was in the UK unlawfully, and which would survive his return to Nigeria.

“The interference would therefore be limited, and lawful in all the circumstances.”

Dele Farotimi’s arrest over defamation petition gross misuse of power- Peter Obi

Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has condemned the arrest of his political ally, Dele Farotimi, over a defamation petition.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Obi described Mr Farotimi’s arrest as a grave assault on democracy.

Mr Obi said Mr Farotimi’s arrest “is a gross misuse of police powers and a grave assault on the principles of democracy and justice in Nigeria.

“I condemn this action in totality. It represents not only an attempt to intimidate opposing voices from questioning authority.”

Mr Obi berated those behind Mr Farotimi’s arrest, calling for the human rights lawyer’s immediate and unconditional release.

“The police must recognise that their allegiance is to the constitution and the people of Nigeria, not to narrow interests at the behest of those in power,” the former Anambra governor added.

Mr Farotimi’s arrest was reported earlier on Tuesday. Before his arrest, Mr Farotimi, in a statement, said Tony Elumelu, the chairman of UBA, had filed a petition against him, in which he had honoured the police invitation.

Additionally, Mr Farotimi alleged that senior lawyer Afe Bababola mobilised Nigerian police to arrest and take him to Ekiti State for trial.

Human rights lawyer Farotimi in our custody — Ekiti Police

The Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed that human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi is in its custody.

In a statement issued Tuesday night in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, Command spokesperson Mr. Sunday Abutu addressed concerns about Farotimi’s whereabouts following reports of his arrest earlier that morning.

Abutu revealed that Farotimi is under investigation in connection with a petition alleging defamation and cyberbullying.

The statement reads in part, “The Ekiti State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that one Mr Dele Farotimi is undergoing investigation following a petition written against him to the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command for an allegation of defamation of character and cyberbullying.

“He was arrested today in Lagos with a warrant after all means deployed by the Command to bring him for interrogation proved abortive.

“He is currently in custody and will be arraigned as soon as investigation is concluded”, it added

Court documents show 753 duplexes recovered from ex-CBN governor Emefiele

The Economic Financial Crimes Commission recovered 753 duplexes and other apartments on Plot 109 Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor Godwin Emefiele, court documents showed.

The court affidavits detailing how Mr Emefiele acquired the said property with “kickback” from contractors were published by Omoyele Sowore, AAC presidential candidate in 2023, on Tuesday, following his Monday tweet in which he said the asset was recovered from Mr Emefiele. He had berated the anti-graft for concealing the former CBN governor’s identity.

“That our investigation equally revealed that erstwhile CBN governor received kickbacks from some contractors who were awarded contracts by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“That upon investigation, it was revealed that one Ifeanyi Omeke, a deputy general manager and head, litigation of Zenith Bank Plc, worked closely with Godwin Emefiele and ran several errands for him which included purchase and perfection of title documents for several properties located in highbrow areas of Lagos and Abuja,” the affidavits read in part.

Mr Sowore released the affidavits on Tuesday following an EFCC statement criticising him for accusing the anti-graft agency of concealing Mr Emefiele’s identity.

The EFCC, in a statement on Tuesday, explained that Mr Emefiele’s identity was concealed in its Monday statement because the investigation was still ongoing.

“It is important to note that the substantive criminal investigation on the matter still continues. It would be unprofessional of the EFCC to go to town by mentioning names of individuals whose identities were not directly linked to any title document of the properties. The EFCC is unwavering in its no-sacred-cow approach to every matter, and together, we will make Nigeria greater,” the EFCC said.

N80bn fraud: Court orders former AMCON MD’s arrest

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja, on Tuesday, issued a bench warrant against the former Managing Director of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria, Ahmed Kuru, over alleged N76bn and $31.5m of fraud.

Justice Mojisola Dada ordered Kuru’s arrest for failing to appear before the court for his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The court had scheduled Tuesday to arraign Kuru along with the Managing Director of Arik Air, Captain Roy Ilegbodu, the receiver manager of Arik, Kamilu Omokide, Union Bank Plc, and a company, Super Bravo Limited, for alleged N76bn and $31.5m fraud.

They are facing six counts bordering on making a false statement, fraudulent conversion, abuse of office, stealing, and dishonest conversion of property.

According to the EFCC, the offences committed contravened Section 96 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 and Sections 278 (1) (b) and 278(6) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

However, the arraignment could not go on due to the absence of Kuru and his lead counsel, Olasupo Shasore (SAN).

Earlier, when the case was called, the EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN), announced his appearance while Prof. Taiwo Osiptan (SAN) appeared for the first defendant (Kamilu Omokide ) and the third defendant ( Captain Roy Ilegbodu).

Olalekan Ojo (SAN) announced his appearance for the fourth defendant (Union Bank of Nigeria Plc), while Tayo Oyetibo SAN appeared for the fifth defendant (Super Bravo Limited).

However, the second defendant (Ahmed Kuru) was absent from court and was not represented.

The court then issued a bench warrant against Kuru.

However, as the judge was about to adjourn the case, she was informed that Kuru was on his way to court. So, she stood the case down for a while.

When the court recovened, Kuru was still absent but a lawyer, I.B. Amefula, announced appearance as Kuru’s lawyer.

However, Shittu, displeased by the development, prayed the court to issue a warrant for Kuru’s arrest.

“The former MD of AMCON had jumped administrative bail granted by the EFCC on several occasions.

“In view of the attitude of the second defendant, we urge the court to issue a bench warrant.

“My Lord, all the defendants in this case were served, but they got to the residence of the second defendant, the man had disappeared. He had blocked his contact.

“Someone who is a former MD of AMCON is not supposed to behave that way,” Shittu argued.

Justice Dada granted Shittu’s prayer and issued a bench warrant against Kuru.

The plea by Amefula for the judge to lift the bench warrant was declined.

“I will retain the order until the next adjourned date. When he is here on the next adjourned date I will revoke the order,” the judge said and adjourned till January 20, 2025 for the arraignment.

A segment of the Samsung building under construction at Aminu Kano Crescent, Wuse 2, by Banex Junction, Abuja, has collapsed.

Abdulrahman Mohammed, acting director-general of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), confirmed this in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr Mohammed said the incident occurred when the Penthouse segment of the three-story building collapsed during casting.

He said that although no life was lost to the incident, four out of the 10 construction workers on site sustained minor injuries and have been taken to Wuse General Hospital for treatment.

The acting DG appealed to developers to adhere strictly to the building code and safety on site.

He appealed to residents to always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of disaster.

Security guard arrested for staging own kidnapping, demanding N50m ransom

A 35-year-old security guard of Rubber Estate in Ose River, Ovia South West local government area of Edo State, Akpooh Edet, has been arrested for staging his own kidnapping and demanding a ransom of N50 million from his employer.

Edet was apprehended at his hideout by operatives of the Ondo Amotekun corps in Igbotako, Okitipupa local government area of Ondo State.

The arrest was successful following assistance from the Edo Command of the Department of State Security (DSS).

Edet was among 22 suspects paraded at the headquarters of the Ondo Amotekun Corps.

The Amotekun commander Akogun Adetunji Adeleye stated that Edet was found at the residence of Libon James, who might have been unaware of Edet’s staged kidnapping.

The two suspects will be handed over to the DSS for further investigation. Senior Security Manager Oluwole Adesonlu disclosed that Edet has worked for the firm for about 10 years. He added that Edet and his gang initially demanded N50 million, later reducing it to N35 million before settling for N15 million.

He said: “We discovered that one of my guards was missing. We began the search for him and contacted the DSS.

“It was during investigation that I contacted Amotekun in Igbotako and Edet was tracked to where he was hiding. Two accomplices were arrested in Edo State and we discovered that it was a self-kidnap to extort money from the company.”

Italy to host Davis Cup Final 8 from 2025

Italy will host the Davis Cup Final 8 from 2025 to 2027, the International Tennis Federation has announced.

The eight-team men’s event was won this year by Jannik Sinner’s Italy, who triumphed in Spain last month.

Malaga has hosted the event since 2022.

“We are delighted to partner with the FITP (Italian tennis federation) for the Davis Cup Final 8,” said ITF president David Haggerty. “Italy has a rich history in tennis and a proven ability to host world-class sporting events.”

The 2025 tournament will be staged in Bologna.

Angelo Binaghi, president of the FITP, said: “We are thrilled to have been selected as hosts and look forward to welcoming the best teams in the world to our country next November and for the next three years.”

The ITF also announced the draw for the first round of the 2025 Davis Cup qualifiers on Monday.

Italy receive a wild card to the Final 8, while 2024 runners-up the Netherlands will not be involved until the second round.

The first round will feature 26 teams competing in 13 ties on either Friday, January 31, 2025 to Saturday February 1, or February 1 to February 2.

Each tie consists of two singles matches on day one, and a doubles match followed by two singles matches on day two.

The 13 winners will advance to the second round of qualifying in September.

Among notable ties, Sweden meet Australia, France go head to head with Brazil and Britain take on Japan.

Daniel Dubois to face Joseph Parker in defence of IBF heavyweight title

Daniel Dubois will take on Joseph Parker in the next defence of his IBF heavyweight world title on February 22, according to Sky Sports.

In June this year, Dubois became the IBF’s Interim titlist, when he defeated Filip Hrgovic in June.

He was then upgraded to full world champion after Oleksandr Usyk’s rematch with Tyson Fury was set for December 21.

This meant Fury had to vacate that belt.

Dubois then knocked Anthony Joshua out inside five rounds at Wembley Stadium in September.

Parker is a former world champion himself and has been pressing for another title shot with a sequence of eye-catching victories, notably upsetting hard-punching former WBC champion Deontay Wilder last year and then outpointing Zhilei Zhang to win the WBO Interim title.

China lifts ban on Australian red meat

China has fully lifted trade suspensions targeting Australian red meat, Canberra said Tuesday, dismantling one of the final barriers in a four-year trade row that hammered US$13 billion of exports.

Starting in 2020, a slew of Australia’s most lucrative export commodities were effectively banned from China.

But as relations have improved in the past two years, Beijing has dropped tariffs on Australian barley and wine, halted an import ban on timber and resumed shipments of coal.

Barriers targeting red meat and lobster were the last to remain.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Tuesday that China had paved the way for “full resumption of red meat exports”.

Full lobster trade is expected to resume by the end of the year, the Australian government announced in October.

“We are close to the point where China’s trade impediments — which impacted Aus$20 billion (US$13 billion) worth of Australian exports — have all been removed,” trade minister Don Farrell said on Tuesday.

Court upholds death sentence for Vietnamese property tycoon

A Vietnamese court upheld the death penalty Tuesday for a property tycoon, Truong My Lan, in a multi-billion dollar fraud case — but said her life could still be spared if she paid back three-quarters of the assets she embezzled.

Property developer Lan, 68, was convicted earlier this year of swindling money from Saigon Commercial Bank — which prosecutors said she controlled — and condemned to die for fraud totalling $27 billion.

She appealed the verdict in a month-long trial, but on Tuesday the court in Ho Chi Minh City determined that there was “no basis” to reduce the death sentence for Lan.

However, there is still a chance for her to escape the death penalty.

The court said Tuesday that if she returns three-quarters of the stolen assets, her sentence could be reduced to life imprisonment.

Tens of thousands of people who invested their savings in SCB lost money, shocking the communist nation and prompting rare protests from the victims.

Lan, who founded the real estate development group Van Thinh Phat, earlier told the court in Ho Chi Minh City that “the quickest way” to repay the stolen funds would be “to liquidate SCB, and sell our assets to repay SBV (State Bank of Vietnam) and the people”.

“I feel pained due to the waste of national resources,” Lan said last week, adding she felt “very embarrassed to be charged with this crime”.

Lan owned just five per cent of shares in SCB on paper, but at her trial, the court concluded that she effectively controlled more than 90 per cent through family, friends and staff.

The State Bank said in April that it pumped funds into SCB to stabilise it, without revealing how much.

Among the assets that Lan and Van Thinh Phat own are a shopping mall, a harbour and luxurious housing complexes in the business hub of Ho Chi Minh City.

During her first trial in April, Lan was found guilty of embezzling $12.5 billion, but prosecutors said the total damages caused by the scam amounted to $27 billion — equivalent to around six per cent of the country’s 2023 GDP.

Lan and dozens of defendants, including senior central bank officials, were arrested as part of a national corruption crackdown dubbed the “burning furnace” that has swept up numerous officials and members of Vietnam’s business elite.

A total of 47 other defendants have requested reduced sentences at the appeal.

Last month, Lan was convicted of money laundering and jailed for life in a separate case.

FBI arrest Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade for plotting racist attack on himself to win election

The FBI has arrested Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade for allegedly plotting a racist attack on himself to win the election.

The latest development has also led the FBI to refer Mr Mobolade for prosecution for making false statements related to a hate crime hoax intended to boost his candidacy, The Daily Wire reports.

On November 12, the acting U.S. attorney for the District of Colorado announced that three supporters of Mr Mobolade had been charged with writing the n-word on one of his campaign signs and erecting a burning cross in front of it.

The individuals charged are Derrick Bernard Jr., Ashley Blackcloud, and Deanna West.

These supporters were reportedly sending videos of the spectacle to the media to rally Black voter turnout for Mr Mobolade, an African immigrant.

Their actions were allegedly intended to galvanise support for Mr Mobolade during the mayoral runoff election against Wayne Williams.

Mr Mobolade, a left-wing candidate, went on to defeat a white Republican in a closely fought election in the conservative-leaning city.

According to The Daily Wire, FBI investigators obtained communications showing that the now-mayor was in close contact with the lead suspect, Mr Bernard, before, during, and after the incident.

Mr Mobolade was interviewed twice to determine his knowledge of the hoax, during which he strenuously denied having contact with Mr Bernard.

Following his conduct during the interviews, the FBI referred the now-mayor to the Department of Justice for charges related to making false statements to federal investigators.

FBI officials also claimed there were dozens of messages exchanged between Mr Bernard and the now-mayor.

Mr Bernard is a career criminal who was sentenced to 32 months in prison in 2018. He allegedly attempted to kill two police officers and has since been convicted of an unrelated murder of a rapper who disrespected him.

During the interviews, officials noted that Mr Mobolade scrolled through his phone as a memory aide. However, they stated that “he was literally skipping over text messages,” apparently unaware that the bureau had already obtained them from other sources.

An official reportedly said, “The initial response from the Department of Justice was, ‘We can’t indict the first Black mayor of Colorado Springs.’ In my experience, if anyone else had been in that position, they would have been charged with lying to a federal agent.”

The alleged hate crime occurred in 2023, between an April 4 general election and a May runoff election that was scheduled because the general election results were so close.

Enugu, Austrian firm sign $100 million water infrastructure deal

On Monday, the Enugu government and Austrian firm WANDE NEXUS signed a $100 million deal to implement the Sustainable Last Mile Connectivity and Advanced Metering Infrastructure Project in Enugu.

With the signing, which took place at the Government House, Enugu, in the presence of the Austrian ambassador to Nigeria, Thomas Schlesinger, the firm will inject the fund as foreign direct investment to modernise water infrastructure.

In a speech, Governor Peter Mbah described the signing as an example of the relationship that could exist between a sub-sovereign and a sovereign, as well as a major step to getting water to the last mile in Enugu City.

“We now have an investment of $100 million to deal decisively with the last mile connection, the downstream part of our water system.

“This huge sum shows that the economic reforms of the federal government and our effort to position Enugu as the premier destination for investment are yielding results because this is a major FDI, not just for us as a state but even as a country.

“For the record, this is not a case where we are just signing an agreement that is exploratory. This is an agreement for funds to begin to flow,” Mr Mbah said.

He further said that his administration had increased water production from an occasional two million litres to 120 million litres daily.

According to him, the biggest challenge is expanding the network and connecting the tertiary pipelines to the various homes.

“But with the signing of the FDI agreement, the problem will become a thing of the past as this is purely an investment of $100 million being injected in our downstream water sector,” the governor said.

In an address, Mr Schlesinger said the investment had the strong backing of the Austrian government. He commended Mr Mbah for building the necessary international relationships and showing a strong commitment to improving his people’s lives.

“This investment in the amount of $100 million is, therefore, a testimony of his excellent work and his vision for Enugu state,” he said.

Dein of Agbor urges unity in Nigeria

The Dein of Agbor kingdom in Delta, Benjamin Ikenchukwu, has emphasised the importance of unity in building a strong and developed Nigeria.

Mr Ikenchukwu gave the advice on Monday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book titled ‘Bold Leap’ by Chris Anyanwu, a journalist and politician.

He advised Nigerians to remember that they are first Nigerians before any tribe or religion.

Mr Ikenchukwu urged Nigerians to work with the government to address the country’s challenges. He noted that Nigeria’s ability to survive adversity was a testament to its strength.

“If Mr President fails, we all fail. If he succeeds, we all succeed,” he said.

The traditional ruler also advocated for women’s empowerment, stating that any nation that did not respect its women invites the wrath of God. He encouraged Nigerians to respect women and provide them with the necessary support to achieve their dreams.

King Jaja of Okpobo, Dandeson Jaja, congratulated Ms Anyanwu on her book and commended her resilience in adversity.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, expressed confidence that readers would learn valuable lessons from the book.

A panel discussion titled ‘How do we fix Nigeria: System, Structure, Institutions or Leadership?’ was moderated by Udenta Udenta.

Former Senate minority leader Enyinnaya Abaribe stressed the need for effective leadership. The former chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi, emphasised the importance of restructuring Nigeria to address the needs of its young people.

An environmentalist and human rights activist, Annkio Briggs, also advocated for restructuring Nigeria’s political system, particularly regarding representation.

Ex-beauty queen pays fines of five inmates, give items

Former Miss Heritage Africa (2016) and Miss Heritage Nigeria (2015), Benedicta Akpana, yesterday visited Suleja Custodian Centre where she cleared the fines of five inmates.

Akpana said her visit was to spread hope to the inmates, noting she intervened as they were in custody over inability to pay their fine.

The beauty queen, who gave items worth millions of naira to them and two infants, said it was to mark her birthday.

She said she was celebrating her birthday with the inmates, noting that those in custody deserve to be shown love.

The actress and movie producer said: “Speaking with these people and seeing the women here got me emotional. For a moment, I imagined what they would have been if they were not here. That someone is in prison doesn’t mean all hope is lost for them.

“So, we decided to come here today to spread hope. To tell our brothers and sisters here that if life gives them a second chance, they must make use of it and live it in full. We want them to understand it is not over for them just because they’re in prison. Our God is a God of second chance, and we know some of them would come out even stronger to fulfil their mandates in life. “

She called on well meaning Nigerians to take out time to visit and support the privileged in the society.

“We came here with the little we could afford; we’ve donated toiletries, provisions, food items and have cleared fines of five inmates that are here because of their inability to pay. We wanted to do more, but five were available, and from this experience, I want to be doing this more often and not just on my birthday’’, she said.

Deputy Controller of Prisons, Ibrahim Ya’u, thanked her for her generosity, assuring those whose fines have been paid that they would be taken to court the next day to finalise their release “

Customs officer, wife, four children die in fire in Osun

A tragic fire incident claimed the lives of six family members, including a Customs officer, Tijani Kabiru, attached to the Oyo/Osun Command, his wife, and four children in the early hours of Monday in Ede, Osun State.

The fire reportedly started around 2 a.m. at the family’s residence in the Olowopoku area of Ede.

Sources revealed that Kabiru, who was in his late 40s, was asleep alongside his wife and five children when the fire, believed to have originated from the solar panel installed on the roof of the house, engulfed the building.

The devastating incident has left the community in shock and mourning.

A source in the area disclosed: “The fire started around 2:09 am from the roof of the house. An electric spark from the solar panel attached to the roof caused the fire.

“One of the children, a 13-year-old was reading when the fire started, he ran to the father’s room he realised that his father and other family members were weak due to the emission of smoke. He ran out of the house to call for help. It was difficult for residents of the house to access the house due to the security of the house like electric barbed wires and strong doors among others.

“We informed the Fire Service men around 3:10 am. But before they arrived at the scene, Tijani, his wife, and four children were burnt to death.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Osun State Fire Service, dekunle Ibraheem confirmed the incident to The Nation.

He said: “It is true that one Tijani, a Customs officer, his wife and four children were burnt to death. Only one of them escaped the scene. Their bodies were handed over to the men of A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.”
