German Catholic laity sees church at risk with new conservative pope

The head of the Central Committee of German Catholics has voiced hope that the next pope will continue on the legacy of openness pursued by Pope Francis ZdK warned that the election of a conservative figure could pose challenges for the church in Germany.

ZdK president Irme Stetter-Karp told dpa that the church required leadership capable of meeting the demands of the 21st century.

She said the election of a conservative pope would likely pose a significant challenge for the Catholic Church in Germany.

She acknowledged the presence of forces within the Catholic Church that wished to maintain clerical power and viewed too much freedom for the faithful as a threat to church unity.

“This risk exists, and it is not small,” she said. “The ZdK represents the Catholic laity, the non-clergy in local parishes.

She added, “Together with the German Bishops’ Conference, the ZdK initiated a reform process in 2019, the Synodal Path.

“This focused on reforms within the church concerning lay preaching and same-sex couples, moves that infuriated conservatives, prompting some to speak of a schism and heresy.”

Surveys have repeatedly shown that the majority of German Catholics support liberalising reforms, including more rights for women and a shift in the church’s stance on sexual morality.

Students’ union launches fundraiser for 77-year-old Nigerian driver shot in US

The Philadelphia Chapter of the Black Students Union has launched a $25,000 fundraising campaign to assist with the burial expenses of Olatunji Bolaji, a 77-year-old Nigerian-born Uber driver who was tragically shot and killed in Centre City, Philadelphia.

Naija premium gist had earlier reported that Bolaji was killed in an ambush while attempting to pick up a passenger outside a hookah lounge. The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15.

According to CBS News, the victim, Olatunji W. Bolaji of Norristown, Pennsylvania, had arrived outside Byblos Hookah Bar to collect a rider when he was attacked.

As a 22-year-old passenger entered Bolaji’s vehicle, two men emerged from a car parked behind and opened fire, Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small told the outlet. The suspects fired “at least four times,” hitting Bolaji in the head and wounding the passenger in the arm, leg, and stomach. Despite being shot, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing.

In response to the tragedy, BSU Philadelphia Chapter President Alex Morris launched a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of the Bolaji family, aiming to raise $25,000 to support burial and related expenses.

The statement reads, “It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden, senseless loss of Olatunji Bolaji—a 77‑year‑old father, grandfather, husband, and devoted rideshare driver murdered while simply doing his job on April 16, 2025, in Center City Philadelphia.”

Morris noted that BSU has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Bolaji family and is stepping in to support his widow, Charice Bolaji, and their children during this difficult time.

He explained that the $25,000 fundraising goal would help meet urgent needs: $12,000 to cover funeral and memorial service costs, $5,000 for the family’s immediate living expenses, and $3,000 for counseling support for family members.

“Any amount—$5, $50, or $500—eases the family’s burden. Share this campaign in your networks so others can give. And please, keep Ola’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

“Ola drove countless neighbors home safely; it’s our turn to bring his family safely through their darkest hour. Thank you for standing with the Bolajis and honoring a man whose quiet strength never faltered,” the statement added.

Wike caused crisis in PDP because he’s on mission to destroy it: Party Chair

Robinson Ewor, the acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, has slammed Nyesom Wike, a former governor of the state and current minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for plunging the party into an unresolved crisis.Mr Ewor, who spoke on Monday, also accused the FCT minister of causing the crisis in the PDP for his political gains.

He explained that Mr Wike deliberately worked against the party in the 2023 general election because he lost the ticket to Atiku Abubakar.

“Wike wanted to be president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and he submitted to the primaries of the party, but Atiku won the party’s ticket.

“Thereafter, Wike wanted to be the vice presidential candidate, but because Atiku did not pick him, Wike started the crisis in PDP. He was the genesis of the crisis in PDP because Wike lost the presidential ticket,” he said on Arise TV on Monday.

According to Mr Ewor, the ex-governor formed the “G5 Governors” in the heat of the crisis to destroy the party and narrow Mr Abubakar’s chances of winning the election.

He noted that the opposition party has moved beyond the defeat in the 2023 general election, saying the leaders are on a mission to bring everyone on board.

The Rivers PDP chairman also said Mr Wike is no longer a member of the PDP and has no moral justification to advise leaders of the party.

“How do you advise the party, which you are no longer a member? How do you advise people you’re busy destroying? How do you advise a party that you’re at the forefront of destroying?

“The crisis we fight in PDP today is not because the PDP is in crisis; it is because the FCT minister is on a mission to destroy the party,” he said.

Mr Ewor added, “He has started it in Rivers State. What is the crime or sin of Fubara? He did not commit any crime, but because he wanted to control the structure of the party, the structure of government, the state House of Assembly and every other known structure in the state to enable him to rig the election in 2027 for the APC. This is just the crisis in Rivers State.”

Although he’s yet to publicly renounce his membership of the PDP, Mr Wike has not seized from disparaging the opposition party’s leaders since he was appointed a minister in the APC-led government.

Last week, Mr Wike, who appeared on live TV, said he is ready for a “fight to finish” in the PDP, maintaining that he’s ready to face whatever challenges arise within the opposition party.

The FCT minister had also been accused of being instrumental in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office and the subsequent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers.

ALSO: Jigawa: Gov. Namadi lifts suspension on commissioner

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Governor Namadi described Danjuma’s comment as concerning, stressing the need for caution given the general’s stature and influence. “Such statements should be carefully weighed,” he said, adding that self-defense, if unregulated, could trigger widespread chaos and undermine the nation’s security structure.

According to him, Jigawa has made significant strides through consistent dialogue, support from traditional institutions, and the formation of community-based security committees.

He revealed that the idea is under active discussion at the National Economic Council and noted that several states have already expressed interest in adopting the system.

Pope Francis dies at 88

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025 at 88.

He died at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta.

He said: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.” The Pope was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025 after suffering from a bout of bronchitis for several days. Pope Francis’ clinical situation gradually worsened, and his doctors diagnosed bilateral pneumonia on Tuesday, February 18. After 38 days in hospital, the late Pope returned to his Vatican residence at the Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. In 1957, in his early 20s, Jorge Mario Bergoglio underwent surgery in his native Argentina to remove a portion of his lung that had been affected by a severe respiratory infection. As he aged, Pope Francis frequently suffered bouts of respiratory illnesses, even cancelling a planned visit to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023 due to influenza and lung inflammation. In April 2024, the late Pope Francis approved an updated edition of the liturgical book for papal funeral rites, which will guide the funeral Mass which has yet to be announced. The second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis introduces several new elements, including how the Pope’s mortal remains are to be handled after death. The ascertainment of death takes place in the chapel, rather than in the room where he died, and his body is immediately placed inside the coffin. According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope Francis had requested that the funeral rites be simplified and focused on expressing the faith of the Church in the Risen Body of Christ. “The renewed rite,” said Archbishop Ravelli, “seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world.”

During the rescue operation, the police engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel, leading to the neutralisation of one suspect, while others escaped with gunshot wounds while one police inspector sustained gunshot injuries during the operation and is currently receiving treatment. Both suspects however confessed to the crime and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.According to the police, the kidnappers used the students as human shields, forcing operatives to proceed with caution, and a sustained sustained pressure in the gun duel eventually led to the release of the ten kidnapped students, eight males and two females, without further casualties.

Criminalise electoral fraud, Yiaga Africa tells FG

Mr Itodo stated, “The majority of the political class want power at all costs and are willing to kill, just to secure power.’’Acivil society organisation, Yiaga Africa, has called on the Federal Government to criminalise electoral fraud to sanitise the county’s electoral process.Executive Director of the CSO, Samson Itodo, made the call during an interview on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr Itodo said that practices such as vote buying, violence, thuggery and manipulation of results had constituted hindrances to electing credible political representations in Nigeria.

He said, “What we are now seeing is people with purchasing power buying their ways through during elections and they resort to exchanging competence with mediocrity. The politicians now know the language of the people because they have weaponised poverty.’’

According to him, what the country needs now are stringent laws that will criminalise vote buying, thuggery and other forms of fraud during elections.

Mr Itodo said that the provisions in the Electoral Act were only about bribery and conspiracy which were not enough to tackle the menace.

“I think we need to clearly outline and define vote buying and also prosecute the sponsors and their agents who are buying and selling votes. We also need to constantly re-orientate people to tell them the reason why the politicians are buying votes,” he said.

The executive director said if these were able to be achieved and people used their votes wisely, it would ensure credibility in the country’s electoral process.

According to him, until the state begins to prosecute and jail people instigating and perpetrating violence, nothing will change.

He stated, “The majority of the political class want power at all costs and are willing to kill, just to secure power. One of the sins they said Yiaga Africa committed was exposing these frauds. For me, if that is a sin, I shall commit it many times over. That way people can hold them to account. But if you continue to allow our electoral process to be captured by political elements, we will get to a point where only one per cent of people will turn out to vote.’’

Stressing the need for Nigerians to turn out en masse to vote during elections, Mr Itodo said that the current level of turnout cannot change anything.

He added, “If Nigerians show up in their large numbers, I bet you, they will determine the outcome of such elections. It is easier to rig an election when people don’t show up. If people show up and insist that the right thing be done, then it will be difficult for those people to manipulate the process.

Mr Ojelabi urged Christian faithful to live by the lessons of Easter. The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has felicitated with Christians at Easter, urging them to live as “resurrected people, transformed by grace and love.”The state’s party Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, said this in his Easter message in Lagos on Sunday.

Mr Ojelabi emphasised the significance of Jesus’ resurrection, urging faithful to live by the lessons of Easter.

The chairman encouraged Christians to carry the light of Christ into a “broken world,” referencing Matthew 28:19.

He said, “I urge the Christians to reject fear and complacency, serving as a living testament to the power of the risen saviour. They should imbibe the spirit to forgive, love, and serve others as they have been forgiven, loved, and served by Christ.’’

As the local government election in the state approaches, Mr Ojelabi prayed for God’s intervention for a peaceful, transparent, and credible outcome.

He prayed to God to guide the hearts of stakeholders to ensure that the process reflects the will of the people.

Mr Ojelabi further prayed that God should give the electorate the wisdom to make informed decisions by choosing leaders who would serve with integrity and vision.

He expressed hope that the election would usher in a new era of leadership, bringing progress and development to the grassroots.

The APC chairman also prayed for Nigeria’s unity, leaders and citizens
