TCN restores bulk power supply to Sokoto residents after substation fire

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it was able to restore bulk power supply to Sokoto State by 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, said this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

Ms Mbah said that the company was working to restore supply to Kebbi and other areas affected by the unfortunate Birnin Kebbi Substation fire incident that occurred on Thursday.

She said that the bulk power supply to Sokoto was reinstated through the Talata Mafara Substation.

“Our engineering team, along with the Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, and the Executive Director, Transmission Service Provider (TSP), were on-site, putting in every effort to reconnect Kebbi and its environs to the grid through another substation.

“Also, our engineers are actively working on transferring load to the 150 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) and 60 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) power transformers in the substation, which were fortunately unaffected by the fire incident.

“Additionally, cables are being rearranged, and reinforcement teams from other TCN regions have equally arrived at the substation with the necessary materials to expedite repair work,” she said.

Ms Mbah said that the restoration of bulk supply to Sokoto was achieved due to the commitment of TCN’s boss, Sule Abdulaziz, who pledged to ensure the restoration of bulk supply through the Talata Mafara substation.

She said that Mr Abdulaziz also pledged to collaborate with the engineers to temporarily back-feed Kebbi while connecting the 150 MVA power transformer as a permanent solution to the bulk power supply in the area.

“TCN greatly appreciates the patience and understanding of the government and people of Sokoto and Kebbi States and environs.

“We are fully committed to expediting work at the substation to ensure stable and reliable bulk electricity supply to all the affected areas,” she said.

UK increases six-month visa fee from 14,000 to 112,000; student visa from N123,000 to N477,000

The United Kingdom has said that its visiting visa will now cost N112,000 from its previous N14,000 and student visas will now cost a whopping N477,000 as opposed to N123,000.

The recent increase earmarks an over 600 per cent increment in visa prices by the UK. The UK government explained that the increase would enable it to pay for “vital services and allow more funding to be prioritised for public sector pay rises.”

In a statement published Friday on its website, the UK Home Office said the increase in new visa fees is “set to come into effect next month.”

The statement added that, “The changes mean that the cost for a visit visa for less than six months is rising by £15 (N14,592.70) to £115 (N111,878.28 ), while the fee for applying for a student visa from outside the UK will rise by £127 (N123,537.58) to £490 (N476,677.59), to equal the amount charged for in-country applications.”

The new changes also affect the majority of fees for entry clearance and applications for leave to remain in the UK, including those for work and study.

The recent changes are coming less than six months after the UK government increased the cost of visa applications and health surcharges In July, the UK government announced a 15 per cent increase in the cost of work and visit visas. It also announced a 20 per cent increase in cost of study visas, priority visas and certificates of sponsorship.

“If we’re going to prioritise paying public sector workers more, that money has to come from somewhere else because I’m not prepared to put up people’s taxes and I don’t think it would be responsible or right to borrow more because that would just make inflation worse,” Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, had said in July.

The recent statement by the UK Home Office explained that the income from fees plays a vital role in its ability to run a sustainable immigration and nationality system.

“Today’s changes do not include the planned increase to the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) which are scheduled to be introduced later in the Autumn,” the statement added.

The new visa prices would become effective from October 4, and are subject to parliamentary approval.

Confusion as police shut Ogun digital market

Traders in the popular phone and digital market known as Tarmac in the Panseke area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, were on Friday morning thrown into confusion when heavily armed policemen storm the market and asked the traders to vacate the premises on account that there was a court order for them to leave.

When Punch Metro visited the market, it was observed that there were heavy presence of policemen while the traders hanged around the vicinity of their shops that were under locks and keys.

Some of the traders who spoke with our correspondent noted that there had been recurring cases of land grabbers coming to asked them to vacate the market which has put their business at risk.

A trader, Akeem Oyeyemi, said that the police came in the early hours of Friday to send them out of their stores after showing them a court order which they were not privy of.

“What happened was that this morning around 5am, we receive a call that about 200 police men have invade tarmac with about 20 cars which our chairman also informed us that we should start coming. At around past 6am, we were all gathered here and went to the Olubara’s palace.

“From the palace, we came back here to meet the police to ask what happened. On getting here, the police showed us a court order asking them to lockup Tarmac but we told them that there was no notice of any court order given to us because we believed that if there will be need to lock this place up, we should be informed but we did not know anything.

“So we decided that we should be allowed to open our stores but the police started shooting which made everyone to run for their lives. Till this moment we were not allowed to open our stores,” Oyeyemi said.

Another trader who spoke on condition of anonymity noted that there had been a recurring issue of land grabbers coming to the market to asked them to evacuate the market.

She said, “This is not the first time some people who are land grabbers has been coming to this market to ask us to leave but we will later heard that our leaders has settled with them. The thing is becoming worrisome and it is affecting our business.”

Effort to get the reaction of the chairman of the market association, Ifebola Togunwa, proved abortive as he did not responded to calls and messages sent to his number.

When contacted via WhatsApp chat, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, asked if our correspondent was at the scene of the incident which our correspondent replied affirmative and even send pictures of the scene to but she was yet to respond after reading the message till the time of filing this report.

Academy trains Edo officials in Artificial Intelligence

The John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy has trained 250 Edo State government officials in the use of Artificial Intelligence to enhance their operations.

The training which took place from September 13-14 at the Academy in Benin, was meant to empower civil and public servants in the state with the latest trend in organising and discharging their duties in a fast-growing and technology-driven world.

According to the Director General of JOOPSA, Imuwahen Ajoonu, all the modules in the course have been designed to introduce the Edo State Civil and Public Service workforce to Artificial Intelligence.

She said, “Artificial Intelligence, the world over, is transforming the way governments operate and provide services to citizens. Indeed, understanding the fundamentals of AI remains essential for government officials to make informed decisions, develop effective policies, and harness the potential of AI technologies for public good.

“The aim of the course is to empower civil and public servants with the requisite knowledge to enhance government operations, provide better services to citizens, make data-driven decisions.”

She reiterated that since AI can analyse vast amounts of data quickly, identify trends and provide insights, it could help government make more informed decisions, especially in areas like policy development, resource allocation, and crisis management.

She added, “Artificial Intelligence can also automate routine and time-consuming tasks, allowing government workers to focus on more complex and value-added activities. This will not only increases efficiency but also leads to cost savings in the long run.

“In line with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s E-Governance drive, the AI training programme is geared to, among other things, support workers to make more data driven decisions, resulting in transparency accountability and value-for-money outcomes.”

At the inaugural session of the programme, the lead Facilitator Professor Yinka Omorogbe (SAN) demonstrated to participants that everyone in Government could leverage Artificial Intelligence to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and responsiveness of government operations.

He noted that government workers trained in AI could harness predictive analytics to anticipate trends and issues, adding, “For example, AI could predict traffic congestions, allowing city planners to optimize traffic management, or it could be deployed to forecast disease outbreaks, enabling health agencies to allocate resources more effectively.”

UN seeks $71m for Libya flood victims

The United Nations is urgently seeking more than $71 million to assist those most in need after deadly flash floods swept Libya over the weekend.

Hurricane-strength Storm Daniel slammed into Libya on September 10, killing at least 4,000 people, with thousands more still missing.

In a flash appeal Thursday, the United Nations Humanitarian Agency (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) said it expects the toll to rise.

The city of Derna, one of the hardest-hit locations, was reduced to a wasteland after two upstream dams burst Sunday.

OCHA said estimates suggest 30 percent of the city may have disappeared and with most roads collapsed local authorities are calling for a sea corridor to be established for relief and evacuations.

The entire seaside town of Sousse meanwhile remains submerged.

Calling the situation “catastrophic”, OCHA said its humanitarian partners need $71.4 million to respond to the “most urgent needs of 250,000 people targeted out of the 884,000 people estimated to be in need”.

On Wednesday, UN OCHA head Martin Griffiths had announced an immediate emergency fund of $10 million.

“Entire neighbourhoods have been wiped off the map. Whole families, taken by surprise, were swept away in the deluge of water,” he said in a statement.

“Getting lifesaving supplies to people, prevent a secondary health crisis, and swiftly restore some kind of normality must override any other concern at this difficult time for Libya.”

The United States, European Union, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and several other countries have also already sent or pledged aid, while foreign rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors and recover bodies.

European Union fines TikTok 345m euro over child data

An European Union regulator fined a Chinese-owned social media platform, TikTok, 345 million euro over child data breaches on Friday.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission said in a statement that it has handed down the “administrative fine”, which is equivalent to $369 million, over the breaches it uncovered in a two-year inquiry.

The watchdog, which plays a central role in enforcing EU data rules, gave TikTok three months to make the appropriate changes.Ireland’s DPC also play a key role in policing the bloc’s strict General Data Protection Regulations.

The watchdog in September 2021 began examining TikTok’s compliance with GDPR in relation to platform settings and personal data processing for users aged under 18.

It also looked at TikTok’s age verification measures for persons under 13 and found no infringement, but found the platform did not properly assess the risks to younger people registering on the service.

The DPC highlighted Friday in its ruling how children signing up had TikTok accounts set to public by default, meaning anyone could view or comment on their content.

It also criticised TikTok’s “family pairing” mode, which is designed to link parents’ accounts to those of their teenage offspring, but the DPC found the company did not verify parent or guardian status.

Ireland is at the centre of the GDPR regime because Dublin hosts the European headquarters of TikTok and the likes of Google, Meta and X, formerly Twitter.

TikTok, a division of Chinese tech giant ByteDance, is extremely popular among young people with 150 million users in the United States and 134 million in the European Union.

In response to Friday’s fine, TikTok said it “respectfully disagrees” with the verdict and was “evaluating” how to proceed.

“The DPC’s criticisms are focused on features and settings that were in place three years ago, and that we made changes to well before the investigation even began, such as setting all under 16 accounts to private by default,” a TikTok spokesperson told AFP.

Students protest abandoned project as flood sacks Anambra school

Students of the Metallurgical Training Institute, Onitsha, Anambra State, have begun a peaceful protest over the flood that has taken over the institution and paralysed both academic and non-academic activities.

The President, Student Union Government of the institution, Chigozie Onyenyili, who spoke to journalists at the school gate before the protest began on Thursday, said students had remained awake every night because their hostels were flooded.

He said the flood which began after a downpour which destroyed property belonging to students, including beds and learning materials.

Onyenyili noted that the perennial flooding in the Federal Government-owned institution was worsened because contractors from the government destroyed their existing drainage in a bid to build a new one, without providing alternative measures to mitigate the flood.

He said, “Flooding has been an issue in the institution, but it was worsened because the government recently commenced flood control process by removing an existing drainage inside the school, but they didn’t put the necessary measures in place to mitigate flood.

“They commenced flood control during the rainy season, but now, they have abandoned the work, and as we speak, the entire institution is flooded. Students’ belongings are being destroyed; our beds, mattresses, learning materials, laptops, pots of soups have been washed away.

“We are embarking on this peaceful demonstration to draw the attention of the government towards our plight. The management of the institution has done its best, but we need the government to step in and continue the job which they have abandoned.

“The two machines the government brought for the job are not working and there is a need for them to bring in more personnel to commence the work so that normal activities will resume at the institution.”

During the peaceful demonstration in the community, some students of the institution were seen scooping water out of their various rooms from their hostels, while some were also trying to salvage some of their property like laptops, phones, clothes and beds from the flood.

Another student, Nkiru, who took our correspondent near the affected hostels, also lamented that the flood damaged their laptops, mobile phones, learning equipment, beds, and carried their pots of soup away.

“The flood suddenly submerged our beds and we have remained awake every night. This flood has subjected us all to pain. Other students, whose valuables are inside, have abandoned them because there is no way in and the flood has filled the whole place.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Owoh Ugochukwu, blamed the Anambra State Government for the development.Ugochukwu noted that the state government channelled water coming from Obosi, Nkpor and Onitsha-Owerri Road and environs down to the school without providing adequate measures for enough drainage.

He said, “The flood issue has lingered for some years now, but the school authorities are doing their best. The flood is as a result of the state government channelling water that comes from Obosi, Nkpor, Onitsha-Owerri Road and environs down to the school.

“As we speak now, the water has covered the buildings in the school and the buildings are sinking. The students’ hostels, school mosque, church and lecture halls are under the flood. The student beds, mattresses, learning equipment and pots of soups are swimming in the flood all over the places.”

Electricity consumers slam FG over power grid collapses

The Federal Government has said that the nationwide blackout witnessed on Thursday is due to a fire incident and an explosion on the Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2.

Power consumers, however, kicked against the un-ending excuses of the government as regards power generation and supply in Nigeria, despite privatising the generation and distribution arms of the sector since November 2013.

The PUNCH reported on Thursday that there was widespread blackout across the country following the total collapse of Nigeria’s electricity grid early Thursday morning.

The report stated that the grid collapsed totally around 12.40am on September 14, 2023, leading to the massive loss of supply to power distributors nationwide.

Multiple sources in the power sector, as well electricity distribution companies confirmed the development, as the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc had issued a notice titled, ‘Notice of Total System Collapse.”

In the notice, it said, “The EEDC wishes to inform its esteemed customers of a total system collapse which occurred at 12:40am today, September 14, 2023.

“This has resulted to the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network. Due to this development, all our interface TCN (Transmission Company of Nigeria) stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

“We are on standby, awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre, Osogbo.”

The notice was signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, EEDC, Emeka Ezeh.About a week ago, the Transmission Company of Nigeria had celebrated what it described as 400 days of power grid stability in Nigeria, as it claimed that the grid witnessed no collapse all through the 400-day period.

But giving details of what led to the collapse of the grid in a Facebook post on Thursday, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, explained that a fire outbreak at Kainji/Jebba located in the North-Central part of Nigeria caused the blackout.

The President, Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, and coordinator, Power Sector Perspectives, Kunle Olubiyo, said until the root causes of grid collapse were addressed, the situation would continue.

“As long as we refuse to address the fundamental root causes of system collapse, distortions, instability and related concerns, the recent feat by TCN shall be a spike or flash in the pan.

“Particularly, coming at time when there is low generation, low load dispatch and low energy utilisation. So it might not be out of place to describe the feat (by TCN) as a fluke.”

“Additionally, there is a need for governments at the federal and state levels to halt the ability of the gunmen to move between locations and to block their supply chains for weapons and essentials including petroleum for their motorbikes and access to drugs.”
