A gunman killed at least four people Wednesday at a hospital building in Tulsa, Oklahoma, police said — the latest mass shooting to convulse the United States as Texas families bury their dead after a school massacre nearly 10 days earlier. The suspect, who was armed with a rifle and a handgun during his attack on the Saint Francis hospital campus, died by suicide, police said.
“Right now we have four civilians that are dead, we have one shooter that is dead, and right now we believe that is self-inflicted,” Tulsa Police Department Deputy Chief Eric Dalgleish told reporters.
He said officers responded immediately after emergency calls came in reporting that a gunman had stormed into the second floor of the Natalie Building, which houses a clinic on the Saint Francis campus. Police “were hearing shots in the building” when they arrived, according to Dalgleish, who said officers then searched floor by floor, room by room while trying to clear the building during what authorities described as an active shooter situation.
Earlier, police Captain Richard Meulenberg said officers were treating the scene as “catastrophic,” with “several” people shot and “multiple injuries.” It was not clear how many other people might have been injured. Dalgleish said the entire assault — from the moment emergency calls came in, to the time officers engaged the shooter — lasted about four minutes.
Dalgleish also noted that the suspect had yet to be identified. US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting, the White House said in a statement, adding that the administration has offered support to Tulsa officials.
Elizabeth Buchner, a legal assistant who lives behind the building where the shooting occurred, said she rushed out of her house when she heard helicopters and a loud commotion coming from the direction of the hospital. “It was the most law enforcement I’ve ever seen at one place in my entire life,” Buchner, 43, told AFP by telephone.
She said she witnessed a tactical team rush inside as part of a response that she described as “fast and strong,” with “no hesitation.” Melissa Provenzano, an Oklahoma state legislator, also praised the swift response of the officers.
“It could have been so much worse,” she told CNN. But she expressed frustration at how such tragedies keep happening in America. “We deserve better than this,” she said. “These things are preventable, and it’s time to wake up and address this.”
The shooting is the latest in a string of deadly assaults by gunmen that have rocked the United States in the past month. On May 14 a white supremacist targeting African Americans killed 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York. The shooter survived and is facing charges.
Ten days later an 18-year-old gunman armed with an AR-15 burst into an elementary school in the small Texas town of Uvalde and killed 21 people — 19 of them young children — before being shot dead by law enforcement.
On Wednesday one of the two teachers killed in that attack was laid to rest in Uvalde, a day after the first funerals for the children. Gun regulation faces deep resistance in the United States, from most Republicans and some rural-state Democrats.
But Biden — who visited Uvalde over the weekend — vowed earlier this week to “continue to push” for reform, saying: “I think things have gotten so bad that everybody is getting more rational about it.” Some key federal lawmakers have also voiced cautious optimism and a bipartisan group of senators worked through the weekend to pursue possible areas of compromise.
They reportedly were focusing on laws to raise the minimum age for gun purchases or to allow police to remove guns from people considered a threat to themselves or others — but not on an outright ban on high-powered rifles like the weapons used in Uvalde and Buffalo.
Divorce: My wife denied me sex, deserted family, actor Kalu Ikeagwu tells court
Nollywood actor, Kalu Ikeagwu, on Monday told an Ikeja High Court how his estranged wife, Ijeoma, allegedly deserted their matrimonial home and denied him sex after welcoming their son.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ikeagwu, in the suit marked LD/8939HD/2021, is seeking a dissolution of his six-year-old marriage to Ijeoma.
The actor is also seeking full custody of his three-year-old son and ten-year-old step-daughter.
Under cross-examination by the respondent’s counsel, Mrs S.I. Amedu, Ikeagwu said his wife packed out of his matrimonial home and sent him a mail that she was on her way to her father’s house in Enugu.
He, however, said contrary to her claim that he later saw her at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport with the children after some days.
He said, ” I got back home from a trip on August 4, 2021 to find out that my wife had left our matrimonial home with the children to an undisclosed location.
“I tried to contact her when I got to the house and found it empty. I sent her an email on that same day and she replied that she had gone to her father’s house in Enugu.
“She told me she was at her father’s place in Enugu and four days later, I saw her at the airport in Lagos, heading to God knows where. In the mail she sent, she said she was In Enugu.” Ikeagwu also debunked the claim that he sent his wife and kids out of the house and failed to provide for their upkeep.
He said, “I did not send her out of the house. Someone has to tell me why it takes four days to get to Enugu from Lagos. “If you say ‘you are on your way’ it means it is a continuous sentence. It was a stated fact that she was on her way.
The actor further told the court that his wife denied him sex and also poured water on him while he was asleep. The petitioner also said he was not aware that his wife lost a pregnancy due to a Sexually Transmitted Infection while they were together.
He added, “After the birth of our son, she has refused to have sex with me. I was not aware she lost the pregnancy due to an infection as I did not give her any infection. “Till date, I have not seen any report attached to a document that she lost a baby through STD. Though I did not ask her why she lost the baby.”
Ikeagwu said he stopped sending money to the children for upkeep and maintenance because his wife denied him being the father to his step-daughter.
Kunle Adeyanju, also known as ‘The Lion Heart’, travelled 41 days from London to Lagos on a motorcycle. He tells ADEBIMPE OLAJIGA about the journey.
Here is an exclusive interview between the rider and Punch correspondence :
Kindly introduce yourself. My name is Adekunle Adeyanju. I am from Kwara State, Offa to be precise. My marital status is complicated. I have children but the other part is complicated.
Can you please summarise your trip? How was it? It’s been a heck of a ride. It’s been loaded with experience and pain, lots of pain but also lots of beautiful moments. That’s what life is. It’s a combination of both. It’s been a wonderful experience.
How long have you been in London and what’s the aim of your trip? I am Nigerian-based but my family lives in London. We’ve been there for about thirty years. I shuttle between London and Lagos.
Can you name the countries you passed through? So I started from London to France and to Spain, then I crossed into Morocco and visited Casablanca. I also passed through Mauritania, St. Louis, Dakar, Mali, Bamako, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Accra, Lome, Benin before getting to Lagos.
What’s the motivation behind this trip? For me, it’s all about giving back. It’s all about using my skills and lifestyle to touch the lives of the underprivileged. I look at it that every one of us has been blessed. Some people may say theirs are not enough but we have all been blessed. So those things you’ve been given, how can you use them to touch the lives of other people? On this polio project, what was the push? For me, when I started, I said we were going to use it to support a noble cause. It’s a personal thing for me because I knew someone who had polio. As a boy, when I was growing up, we used to play football and swim. But a friend of mine couldn’t join us. Not because he didn’t want to but because he couldn’t do it as he was limited by the polio disease. I knew what he went through before he finally passed on. So, I promised myself that I must do everything possible to ensure that another person doesn’t go through what my friend went through.
I covered twelve thousand kilometres for the whole journey. I didn’t ride during the whole 41 days. There were some days when I had to do some humanitarian work which had to do with going to the field to immunise children, meeting with people who were volunteers doing this work, encouraging them and engaging them.
How do you intend to go back and what’s the plan for your power bike? (Laughs) I will fly back. I am going to auction the bike and the proceeds will go to charity.
You’ve been talking a lot about Zenab? What’s the plan for her? What’s so special about her and tell us how you met her? I knew Zenab six months ago and we’ve been talking. I discovered that she is a lady with a very good heart, she’s very tough. If you ask me, do I like her a lot? The answer is yes. Do I want to be with her? The answer is yes. Whether she will say yes or not, I don’t know. But yes, it is something I’d love to do. We’ve had so many people talk about going through that journey, trying to do the same thing you have done. What do you have to say to them? Well, if you want to do the ride, I encourage everyone to go ahead and do it. It will test your limits. It will inspire you. You will discover your true self. But I also read comments from a lot of people thinking that is how they can get to Europe. It is a lot difficult. It is easier to go by flight because, at every point, we have a very difficult border coast.
A video said to be that of former Governor Willie Obiano on Anambra State in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has leaked out and circulating on some social media handles.
In the 13-second video, a man who looks very much like Obiano is seen in boxer shorts and a t-shirt drinking water from a container while consulting with another man.
The video has however not been verified, and the anti-graft agency has not reacted to it.
Obiano was arrested at the Mirtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, on his way to the U.S, soon after he handed over power to his successor, Chukwuma Soludo, in Awka, the state capital.
He is said to be under investigation for alleged misappropriation of state funds.
A video showing the moment Mrs. Ebele Obiano left her seat to confront Bianca Ojukwu during the inauguration ceremony of Professor Charles Soludo as the governor of Anambra state, has surfaced online.
From the video, it appears Bianca Ojukwu was the first to dish out the slap to the former first lady who then retaliated. Watch the video below.
