Lawyer Inibehe Effiong alleges that a judge sentenced him to one month in prison after he asked that armed policemen in the court room be sent out because he didn’t feel safe.

Popular lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong has alleged that a judge sentenced him to one month in prison.

The lawyer said this occurred after he asked that the armed policemen in the court room be sent out because he didn’t feel safe.

Effiong said Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot sentenced him to one month in prison while defending one Leo Ekpenyong in the libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel, even though he allegedly didn’t do anything.

He tweeted;

I have just been sent to Uyo prison by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, for one month for defending Leo Ekpenyong in the libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Chief Judge of Akwa Akwa Ibom ordered a Premium Times reporter to leave the court. I said my lord, we were thinking that since the proceeding is public, that members of the public should be allowed to observe the proceeding. My Lord asked me to proceed with cross examination.

I obeyed. I informed the court that I was not feeling comfortable and safe having two armed mobile policemen seated inside the courtroom, that it was strange and that I felt unsafe. I applied for the judge to excuse the armed policemen from the courtroom.

The Hon. Chief Judge then ordered me to step out of the Bar, that she was sending me to prison. She then ordered the policemen to take me to Uyo prison. And that I should be in jail for one month. I am waiting inside the courtroom for them to bring the conviction warrant.

I will be going to the Uyo Correctional Centre now. I have not done anything. I wasn’t even opportunity to say anything before the “conviction”. Two lawyers in court appealed to the Hon. Chief Judge but my Lord insisted that I must be jailed.

I will be going to the Uyo Correctional Centre now. I have not done anything. I wasn’t even opportunity to say anything before the “conviction”. Two lawyers in court appealed to the Hon. Chief Judge but my Lord insisted that I must be jailed.

Meanwhile, there is already a pending application for recusal asking the Hon. Chief Judge, Justice Ekaette Obot, to recuse Himself. We filed it since 23rd June, 2022. The motion is still pending.

ASUU strike: NLC, others intensify protest in Abuja

The Nigeria Labour Congress and its affiliate unions on Wednesday in Abuja continued their solidarity protest in support of the five-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, and the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, among others are currently leading the Day 2 protest in solidarity with ASUU in Abuja.

The PUNCH had reported the unions defied warnings by the Federal Government and took to the streets of major cities in the country on Tuesday to protest against the failure of the Federal Government to resolve the five-month strike by ASUU

Specifically, the NLC said the money the two major political parties – the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party – generated from the sale

The university lecturers had shut down public institutions on February 14 over the inability of the Federal Government to implement the agreements it made with ASUU in 2009 as well as the refusal of the current administration to exempt lecturers from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

ASUU had also asked the government to increase funding of tertiary institutions and pay outstanding allowances.

On Wednesday, the protesters converged at the Unity Fountain and continued with the two-day protest in Abuja over the prolonged strike by university workers across the country.

This comes a day after a similar demonstration was held in various states of the Federation, except for the Federal Capital Territory.

The protest began at about 9:30 am after members of the NLC leadership and leaders of various affiliated unions, as well as members converged on the Unity Fountain in the nation’s capital.

Among those physically present were Wabba, Sowore, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, and the immediate past President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, among others.

PUNCH Metro observed a heavy security presence at the venue of the protest comprising officers of the Nigeria Police, DSS, NSCDC, among others.

Our correspondent gathered that the protesters planned to march down to the National Assembly where the NLC president would deliver a message from the labour unions to lawmakers.

FG must address insecurity before 2023 – Anglican bishop

The bishop of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Owo Diocese, Stephen Fagbemi, has called on the Federal Government to address the issue of security challenges and other issues threatening the existence of the country before the 2023 general elections.

The cleric warned that failure to resolve the issues may not augur well for the country.

Fagbemi gave the warning while reading the Bishop’s Charge at the first session of the 14th Synod of Diocese of Owo Anglican Communion, held at the St. Paul’s Church, Ifon, headquarters of the Ose Local Government. The synod was themed “Chosen to proclaim”.

According to him, Nigeria has found itself in a most unfortunate state, to the extent that some were beginning to suggest that it is becoming a failed state as a result of the inability of the government to address the country’s problems.

He called on churches and individuals to commence a process of self-defense mechanism in the face of the present security threat to the country, adding that if urgent action is not taken by the government, the country may explode.

He said, “What we heard from those who have been released from kidnappers’ den is that a particular ethnic group of this country is responsible and they have a plan to take over every part of the country. We have heard this line of claim several times. A responsible government ought to have investigated this by now and come up with a clear strategy for dealing with this trend.”

On the forthcoming general elections, the cleric said Nigerians need leaders with the necessary aptitude and courage to lead the country out of its quagmire.

He also noted that until the country recognises the rights of every Nigerian to practice the faith of their choice without any intimidation and discrimination, peace, progress and justice will continue to elude the country.

“Going for the 2023 elections without defining these issues and many others that threaten our collective existence is to defer the evil day. I appeal to all civil, religious, and political leaders of this country to abandon all selfish interests and deal with these urgent national issues,” he charged.

U.S. Department of Justice investigating Trump’s actions surrounding January 6 as part of criminal probe into his bid to overturn the election.

The U.S. Department of Justice is reportedly investigating former President Donald Trump’s actions as part of its criminal probe on the January 6 Capitol attack,

According to The Washington Post, federal prosecutors have interviewed witnesses before a grand jury and asked them about conversations between Trump, his lawyers and members of his inner circle regarding a plot to replace Electoral College members with pro-Trump alternate electors in states President Joe Biden won.

They are also examining the actions surrounding Jan. 6, when thousands of Trump supporters, many armed, overran the Capitol on the day that Congress was to count the electoral ballots and affirm Biden’s victory in the 2020.

Sources told the publication that prosecutors have asked detailed questions about meetings Trump held in December 2020 and January 2021, gathering information on his campaign to pressure Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election results, and what instructions – if any – Trump gave his team about the fake electors scheme.

That scheme was led by Trump’s election lawyers Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman, but prosecutors wanted to know the extent of the now ex-president’s involvement, The Post said.

They want to know what Trump told his allies to do as he sought to overturn the 2020 election result.

The Post also reported that investigators received the phone records of Trump’s former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

Two subpoenas obtained by The Post issued to two Arizona state lawmakers who posed as fake electors asked for communications with ‘any member, employee, or agent of Donald J. Trump or any organization advocating in favor of the 2020 re-election of Donald J. Trump, including “Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.”‘

On Monday, ABC News reported that Pence’s former Chief of Staff Marc Short was spotted leaving D.C. District Court on Friday, alongside his lawyer.

Sources told the network that Short testified before a grand jury, compelled by a subpoena, as part of the DOJ’s probe.

Additionally, Pence lawyer Greg Jacob also appeared before a grand jury, The Post said.

In an interview that aired Tuesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland did not rule out prosecuting Trump.

‘We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding January 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable,’ Garland told NBC’s Lester Holt. ‘That’s what we do.’

The DOJ probe is separate from the investigation being conducted by the January 6 House select committee – which may make criminal referals to the Justice Department as well, the top Republican on the panel, Rep. Liz Cheney, said in an interview last month.

‘The Justice Department has been doing the most wide-ranging investigation in its history and the committee is doing an enormously wide-ranging investigation as well,’ Garland said on NBC’s Nightly News.

Terrorists assembling weapons to attack Buhari’s state – NSCDC

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has raised the alarm over a planned attack on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd.) state, Katsina, as well as Lagos, Federal Capital Territory, among others.

The NSCDC stated that Boko Haram and Islamic State for West Africa Province terrorists, from the intelligence it gathered, have mobilised their fighters and had equipped themselves with dangerous weapons like Anti-aircraft guns, general purpose machine guns, among others, in preparation for the attack on the state which the president of the country hails from.

These were contained in a leaked report addressed to all commands dated July 25 and sighted by our correspondent on Tuesday.

The report titled, “Re: Heightened plots by terrorists to stage coordinated attacks in parts of the country” was signed by the Deputy Commandant General Controller in charge of Operations, DD Mungadi.

It read, “We have received credible intelligence that Boko-Haram and the ISWAP terrorist groups have mobilised fighters and high calibre weapons particularly Rocket-propelled Grenade launchers, Anti-Aircraft guns, and General Purpose Machine Guns which they intend to deploy for the offensive in Katsina State.”

The report also hinted at other attacks by bandits groups in Lagos, Federal Capital Territory, Kaduna, and Zamfara states.

It added that the Commandant General had directed the state Commandants to put up measures to avert the attacks.

“In another development, two separate bandits groups are plotting coordinated attacks on North-West, North Central and South West (Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kogi, FCT and Lagos respectively).

“Consequently, the Commandant General has directed you to scale up deployment in all strategic places including Schools, Worship Centres, and Critical National Assets in your respective states, to checkmate any possible threats by these criminal elements. Please treat as urgent,” the report added.

When contacted for reactions, the spokesperson of the NSDC, Shola Odumosu, promised to get back to our correspondent but he was yet to do so at the time of filing this report.

The PUNCH reports that the president’s state has not been spared by the bloodthirsty terrorists who have attacked the state. Recently, his advanced team was attacked, and two policemen were killed.

ASUU: Expect nationwide strike, NLC tells FG.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, has said that the workers’ union will embark on a three-day nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to accede to the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities after the ongoing two-day warning protest organised by the NLC.

Wabba, who spoke in an interview with Channels TV ‘Sunrise Daily’, also stated that the workers’ union embarked on a two-day protest against the ongoing ASUU strike not just as a show of solidarity, but because the strike directly affected the NLC.

He said, “The two-day warning strike is to call for attention for the issues to be resolved promptly. The next level is a three-day national warning strike if nothing has happened after the protest, to show our grievances.

“We are not on a solidarity action, we are affected directly.”

The NLC had organised the two-day protest after a series of failed negotiations between the FG and ASUU to resolve the strike action.

Wabba, who stated that the ongoing protest was a democratic norm which was constitutional and supported by the international charters, added that it was not illegal to carry out such demonstration on the streets.

He said, “These are democratic norms everywhere in the world. Even as an individual, you have the right to air your grievances.

“It is within the provision of our law. It is backed by the United Nations charter for human and peoples rights, African charter for human and peoples rights, and it is there in our constitution — sections 39 and 40.”

Since plans for the ongoing protest was announced by the NLC, the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, had alleged that the protest was illegal and would create anarchy in the country.

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had also taunted the workers’ union, claiming erroneously that the protest was against international labour practices.

The Nigeria Police Force had also in its bid to defend the regime, demanded that the NLC should get a permit from the Force before embarking on the two-day warning-protest.

Responding to the claims by the authorities, Wabba said the court of law had pronounced that citizens did not need permission from the police or any authority to carry out protests.

He said, “Even the court has pronounced that you don’t require any permission. It is legal and within your fundamental human rights to protest issues.

“When people say it’s illegal, I think people should remember that no condition is permanent. We have had some of our current politicians join the NLC to press for similar actions in the past.”

Kogi NLC joins nationwide solidarity protest

The Kogi state chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress, on Tuesday, staged a solidarity protest with the Academic Staff Union of Universities in line with the directive from the national body of the union.

Speaking at the Government House Lokoja, the NLC Chairman, Onuh Edoka, represented by his vice, Simeon Opaluwa Eleojo, said as parents who are paying the school fees of their children, they are feeling the pains of the federal government’s insensitivity which has caused untold hardship on parents and their children.

They also pointed out that the insensitivity on the part of the federal government to keep the students at home has worsened the nation’s insecurity.

He urged the federal government to quickly meet the demands of the tertiary institutions’ workers.

The NLC said that as the nation’s future leaders, keeping the students at home has added to the security threat the nation is currently facing, pointing out that an idle mind is usually the devil’s workshop.

He described the decision to keep mute over the workers’ demands as wicked and insensitive.

The union called on the federal government to immediately return the nation’s children who have been at home for six months to the classrooms, saying, “Enough is enough”.

The chapter disclosed that the strike action began on 14th February, 2022, requesting the intervention of the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to call on the federal government.

The union explained that the strike action by the tertiary institutions workers was owing to the failure to meet the agreement reached and the dismay and reluctance of the Federal Government to meet with the agreement.

One of the highlights of the peaceful protests was a march through the Stella Obasanjo Library to the Government House, where a letter was handed over to the State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who was represented by his Deputy, Chief Edward Onoja, for onward delivery to the Federal Government.

Ganduje laments ASUU strike, promises governors’ intervention.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, on Tuesday, assured the Nigeria Labour Congress that the Nigeria Governors Forum would do everything possible to ensure an amicable resolution to the lingering crisis between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

He gave the assurance when he received members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, who were at the Government House, protesting in solidarity with ASUU.

The governor, who lamented the prolonged crisis, said the NGF would prevail on the Federal Government in the area of advice so as to resolve the crisis with a view to saving the entire system from total collapse.

“We will prevail on the Federal Government in the area of advice because the crisis must be resolved to save the system.

“This crisis must be resolved to help save the system. We don’t want system collapse in this country at all,” Ganguje said.

He noted that the striking university lecturers “are in the strike action to save the system from collapsing.”

While lamenting the plight of students across the country for being idle all this while, he revealed that, “Myself and my colleagues from all the 36 states, irrespective of our party differences, are concerned about the prolonged strike action and we will put our heads together to bring an end to the crisis.”

The governor commended the labour members, students and others who participated in the protest for exhibiting maturity and high sense of responsibility in conducting the protest peacefully.

Ganduje also promised to forward the letter he received from the labour leaders to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, for onward submission to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.) .

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the Kano branch of the NLC, Kabiru Minjibir, said the protest was in compliance with the directive from the National Headquarters of the union to compel the government to do the needful.

He commended Ganduje for not joining some of his colleagues in no work no pay resolution against university lecturers.

“We really appreciate the state government under your able leadership, the people’s governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for your magnanimous approach in not stopping the salary of the lecturers of the state universities.

“This shows you are an education-friendly governor,” Comrade Minjibir said.

Among those who took part in the peaceful protest were ASUU members, student bodies, civil society groups, youth organisations and human right activists, among others.

IPOB denies faction rumours , says Kanu remains leader.

The Indigenous People of Biafra has said that there is no faction in its movement and agitation, contrary to reports making the rounds of factions within the group.

In a statement on Tuesday, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, insisted that Nnamdi Kanu remains the group’s only leader, adding that any persons claiming to be IPOB autopilot group is fake and should be ignored.

Powerful said IPOB has constantly announced that Simon Ekpa is not an IPOB member and people should disregard whatever he says in the group’s name.

He claimed that “autopiloters” are government-sponsored groups paid to infiltrate IPOB and create an impression that IPOB has factions.

He said, “It is on record that the Federal Government has in the past sponsored enemies of IPOB to create non-existing groups claiming to be genuine IPOB that later fizzled out and IPOB is still matching forward.

“IPOB is already used to these government agents and the latest group they call ‘Autopilot’. Let them jamboree with the government funds for the moment before they go the way of others.”

The group urged all the South-East people to join in the solidarity protest against the killings of innocent youths in Imo State.

It added that the state security agencies had killed too many people, and the people could not continue to remain mute.

They alleged that the state governor, Hope Uzodinma was on contract with the Federal Government to “slaughter” and “depopulate” the youths of Imo State youths in return for Supreme Court judgement that made him governor.

The statement read in part, “We the global movement and family of IPOB wish to draw the attention of Sahara Reporters news outlets and other media houses in Nigeria and the world that IPOB has no faction whatsoever.

“Kanu is the only leader in the IPOB. Therefore, any persons claiming to be IPOB autopilot group is totally fake and must be ignored. Either you’re IPOB or not.

“IPOB has constantly announced that Simon Ekpa is not an IPOB member and will never be because he has sold his soul to the devil and has bitten more than he can chew.

“Let these facts sink into all who care to understand, IPOB is only one body. IPOB has a presence in over 100 Nations. IPOB has only one leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. IPOB has an administrative body called the Directorate Of States headed by Mazi Chika Edoziem.

“In the absence of our leader, the Head of DOS takes charge of the global movement and family of IPOB. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in his several live broadcast, had consistently informed our people that DOS is in charge of this struggle while he leads.

“ESN is one and under the command of DOS in the absence of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking on the said autopilot group, Powerful said, “As a double agent, Ekpa was paid to issue a jamboree and fallacious sit-at-home to discourage people from protesting the murder of 14 innocent youths in Awo-Mmamma.

“Autopilot is a government-sponsored group that has never given orders to Biafrans before, and we would not allow them to do that so long as IPOB exists.

“IPOB and ESN stand in solidarity with the youths and people of Imo State to ensure that the evil and murderous Ebubeagu is disbanded by the government, or they will push the people to an unbearable and unacceptable point that could compel them to taking laws into their hands to bring  the Ebubeagu murderous activities to an end.”

More tributes pour in for Nigerian soldier, Lieutenant Suleiman killed by bandits during an ambush in Abuja.

Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn a military officer killed by bandits during an ambush in Abuja on Monday, July 25.

The deceased identified as Lt. Jauro Ibrahim Suleiman joined the military three years ago after completing his NYSC.

Two soldiers and a Captain were killed by terrorists during the attack which occurred in the Bwari area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Sunday night.

The captain and the two soldiers were attached to the 7 Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

Taking to Facebook to mourn Suleiman, one of his friends, Abba Haruna, wrote;

”I knew Lt. Jauro Ibrahim Suleiman in 2011, U11ec ABU Zaria, since then, he’s been a good Freind. During our undergraduate days, we shared alot of good times together; we eat, play football, go swimming, study and even sometimes spend time at the social center. He was a part of some of the best people life gave to me.

Coming from a military family, it had been his dream to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the military. One of the very few men i have seen so passionate about the uniform. About 3yrs ago, his prayers were answered.

In the military, his dedication made him a member of the presidential guard. I remember how, on democracy day, during the military parade at the eagles Square, the president stood right in front of him as though admiring the cuteness in his outfit.

On the 24th of July 2022, he and other members of the presidential guard were ambushed by a group of terrorists at Bwari, Abuja. Sadly, we lost him.

Lt. Jauro lost his life in defending our freedom and liberty. We pray Allah SWA accept him as a shaheed.

Please if u see this post, say a prayer for him. Ask Allah to forgive his short comings and excesses. Ask Allah to make him among the people of Jannah.

Like my freind and brother Abubakar Tanko said, “this is beyond failure of Buhari and insecurity, Nigeria is under attack, squarely”.

Ya Allah! Without doubt, we believe you know the perpetrators, the accomplice, the mind, and the corruption behind this utter injustice that has left our dear nation in mourning day after day. Ya Allah! If it is for something bad we doing, forgive us. Ya Allah! Make these days go away. In ur most sacred names we pray. Amen”

Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, also condoled with the father of the deceased, Colonel Babanawa on the death of his son.

‘Rescue train victims or forget elections’ – Youth group.

A group, Arewa Youth Assembly, has warned that unless the remaining 43 train passengers abducted by terrorists on March 28 are released, the 2023 general election will not hold in the North.

The group, which noted that it shared the pains and agony families of victims of the train attack were going through, also warned the authority against taking its  threat with levity.

The AYA, which comprises youths drawn from the 19 northern states and Abuja, also called for the immediate sack of the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Munguno (retd.), saying that he had run out of ideas.

This was as the Assembly through its Speaker, Mohammed Danlami, in a statement issued in Kaduna on Monday, called for the probe of all military spending in the war against terrorism and banditry across the country.

According to the statement, the youths of the region will ensure that nobody participates in any political activities or the forthcoming elections if “our brothers and sisters in captivity are not released.”

Besides, the group noted that the authorities concerned must ensure that all territories conquered by the terror groups must be liberated before the forthcoming general election.

The statement read, “As the victims of the ill-fated Abuja-Kaduna bound train marked 120 days in captivity, which was celebrated by the terrorists through a released video depicting how they are being molested, the Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) shares in the pain and agony of the immediate families and friends of those in captivity. We pray God to intervene through His supernatural power and set them free.

“The Assembly make bold to state that our youths won’t participate in activities in the build-up to 2023 General Election and the election proper if our brothers and sisters in captivity are not released.

“Also, most of our Local Government Areas  and communities that are now under the control of either Ansaru Terrorists in North-Central and North-West or ISWAP in North-East. In other words, politicians are only welcome to our region, when we have every reason to believe that our forests are free from bandits and terrorists.”

Saying that the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was no longer safe as a result of the activities of non-state actors, the group called on the National Security Adviser to quit or be sacked and replaced by the President.

“The AYA notes that the growing audacity of non-state actors, which led to the invasion of Kuje Maximum Prison, Abuja, and the subsequent release of numerous arrested Boko Haram commanders, shows that even Mr President in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa is not safe.

“It is just a matter of time, these ragtag elements will draw inspiration from  the Afghanistan Terrorists and take over leadership of our country

“We have observed that this insult to our country’s supremacy wouldn’t have been possible if the National Security Adviser, who was supposed to guide Mr President, had not run out of ideas.

“Since his appointment over 7 years ago, we  strongly believe that the man has run out of steam and does not have anything new to offer, hence, the honourable thing for him to do is to pack his luggage and return to his retirement destination and where he fails to do so, Mr President should urgently sack him and get him replaced,” the group added.

The Assembly also decried the alleged corruption, noting that if the defence budgets were properly deployed, the rag-tag terrorists would not withstand the highly trained Nigerian Armed Forces for just “three days.”

“However, Nigerians believe that the Armed Forces remains the most corrupt institution in our country, that needs to be properly checked by various anti-graft agencies,” the group added.

OAU, ABU students’ unions, coalition back NLC protest

The nationwide protest declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress has been met with wide acceptance from students, workers and right groups.

The NLC has slated the protest for Tuesday, July 26 and Wednesday, July 27, 2022, in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities that has been on strike since February 14, 2022 over what it called the alleged failure of the Federal Government to honour the agreement it had with the union.

A student group that had been organising students across the country for protest against the prolonged strike, the Fund Education Coalition, on Monday, declared support for the NLC protest, saying that students had been cheated for too long in their quest for better education.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of FEC, Joseph Aliu, read in part, “It is no longer news that the Nigerian students who are children of the working class citizens have been cheated for too long by the ruling and oppressing class by permitting series of incessant ASUU strikes and pocket tearing school fees which have not only marred the bright future of many Nigerian students, but also resulted in the increase in school dropouts and half-baked graduates.

“FEC is charging well meaning Nigerian students to not give up at this time. Here’s a time to roll our sleeves, dust our boots, march and relocate to the barricades.

“Our future lies in our hands. Nobody shall save us from this sinking educational ship if we don’t save ourselves.

“Nigerian students should be aware that education is a right for everyone of them and they cannot at this time be bamboozled by the shameful display of clamp down by the government through the men-in-black to students who are merely demanding for a better education.”

It called on students to across the country to join the nationwide protest of the NLC.

“Nigeria students should get set to fight this educational oppression to a logical conclusion.

On this, FEC is charging and calling on its members in all states and the generality of aggrieved Nigerian students to join the civil mass action initiated by the NLC, slated for July 26 and 27, 2022.

“Here is a fight to finish,” the statement concluded.

Similarly, the Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, have also backed the protest, calling on their members across the country to join the action.

In statement released at weekend by the OAU Student’s Union, signed by its President, Secretary-General, and Public Relations Officer, Olayiwola Festus and Odewale Damilare and Ogunperi Taofeek, respectively, the union noted that given the about six months strike, it was imperative for students to participate in the NLC protest in order to drive home their demands for reopening of schools.

“Great Ife students are encouraged to participate in the protest in the respective places that they are in the country. The protest is converging at every State Secretariat of the NLC and the Labour House, Abuja. The protest holds on Tuesday, 26 July 2022, and Wednesday, 27 July 2022.

There is no doubt that, with mass participation, this protest is going to greatly help us in getting the government to do the needful after failing to even honour the recommendations of the Nimi-Briggs Committee which it set up by itself. Let us put in our best and join hands with the NLC for the betterment of education sector and for us all to return to classes as soon as possible.

On its part, the Students’ Representative Council of ABU, Zaria, also asked the students of the institution to join the NLC action at their various locations.

A statement obatined by our correspondent, dated July 23, signed by the Secretary-General, ABU SRC, Comr, Allyu Abdulbacil Bako, partly read, “Following the publication of the National Executive Council of the NLC, dated July 15, 2022. The leadership of the ABU SRC is using this avenue to call for immediate mobilisation of our students to partake in the mission of the NLC.

“The leadership is urging our fellow students to partake peacefully in the rally and be good ambassadors of the institution. Please accept our solidarity and highest regards.”

Since the declaration of the nationwide protest by the NLC, Buhari had since directed the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to resolve the ongoing ASUU strike as soon as possible, specifically in two weeks with effect from July 19, when he held the meeting with relevant government agencies.

The FG had also made moves to discourage the planned protest by the NLC, with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, stating that the protest was not necessary, adding that the FG only had issues with ASUU and not the NLC.

Meanwhile, the leadership of ASUU at the states and national levels have remained undaunted in their resolve while hands are still crossed as to what will transpire towards and after the NLC protest.

ACF, CNG fume as terrorists flog abductees

The pan-northern socio-political organisation, Arewa Consultative Forum and the Coalition of Northern Groups have condemned the viral video of the terrorists flogging hostages of the AK-9 Abuja-Kaduna train, urging the Federal Government to wake up to its responsibility of protecting Nigerians.

While saying that the incident was unfortunate, the ACF through its Secretary-General, Malam Murtala Aliyu, described the flogging of the hostages as “nasty.”

The ACF urged the government to wake up to its responsibility of saving the lives of the abductees as well as other Nigerians.

Murtala, who spoke to The PUNCH while reacting to the incident, said, “the issue of flogging or threatening by the terrorists were quite unfortunate. We have made statements on this before and we are not going to say anything different.

“The government must be pragmatic in saving the lives of and welfare of Nigerians as well as protecting them. It is the responsibility of government to act quickly on this.

“It’s becoming nasty and we believe government still have the responsibility on the lives of these citizens. There’s nothing new that we can say apart from the fact that it’s unfortunate.”

Meanwhile, the CNG, a coalition of over 50 groups in the region, urged Nigerians to rise up and defend themselves in the apparent failure of the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to protect them.

The Spokesman of the CNG, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, noted with regrets that terrorists were now exploiting on the failure of the government to torment Nigerians.

He expressed concern over the trending video of the terrorists flogging the hostages, describing it as “disturbing,” adding that the government had continued to live in self denial.Related News

Abdul’aziz, while reacting to the incident with one of our correspondents in Kaduna on Sunday, said, “Conclusively, in the face of the latest development, Nigerians would be right to resort to self-protection because obviously, the bandits and insurgents have sensed a huge vacuum in the capacity and political will to challenge them.

“It is this vacuum the criminals exploit with ease and at will while government, which is supposed to be the first responder, appears to be either living in perpetual denial or totally ignorant of the reality of the situation.

“We have viewed the video clip and assessed the contents and find it disturbing to realise that Nigeria has final come to terms with the reality that it has completely lost control of its forests, land borders, highways and to some extent, the airways and seas to insane bandits and insurgents in the North, deadly armed separatist armies in the East, pirates and other assortments of criminal gangs in the far South and the West.

“The audacious violence shown in the video released by the terrorists and the open threats to abduct the President and sitting governor prove the extent to which the country has lost out to the bandits.

“Having come this far, we’re no longer in doubt that the only remaining option is the hard way that involves communities apparently abandoned to the mercy of deadly insurgents and sundry criminals must immediately mobilise to protect themselves, their homes and their families.

“No people would tolerate to continue to live under such conditions while being led by a government that appears to run from threats and incapable and lacking in the political will to challenge the threats.

“Whether anybody wants to admit it or not, the current administration has failed in the vital area of providing security of life and property to its citizens.

“All the signs of imminent failure or perhaps complete failure of state have manifested in Nigeria as its government has failed to maintain a monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within its borders.

“With the current dominant presence of warlords, paramilitary groups, corrupt policing, armed gangs, terrorism, and a messed up security apparatus of the country, the very existence of the state has been rendered dubious, and the Nigerian state is by all indicators appearing like a failed state.”

“Everyone, even government, benefits from insecurity” Bandit kingpin says

Abu Sanni, a self-confessed bandit kingpin, has said that insecurity has become a business everyone benefits from.

Sanni, who says he helped mastermind the abduction of students of Government Girls Secondary School Jangebe, Zamfara, was interviewed by BBC Africa Eye in a forest in Zamfara.

The documentary titled ‘The Bandit warlords of Zamfara’, will air today, July 25.

Yusuf Anka, a journalist, went into remote bandit enclaves in the state to speak with the bandits.

Sanni told the journalist that the schoolgirls kidnapped on February 27, 2021, were taken by his gang as revenge against the government for sending the military after them.

He said his gang demanded N300 million from the government for the release of the schoolgirls but N60 million was paid.

“When the rainy season ended, they sent the military after us. We decided to show the government they should not interfere in our problems. We went to Jangebe and took the students. We wanted to get the government angry,” he said.

“We demanded N300 million but after negotiations, N60 million was paid for their release.”

Sanni said insecurity has become a lucrative business, adding that everyone, including the government, is benefitting from the violent attacks.

He said: “Because it has become a business. Everyone wants money. That is why things are deteriorating, from the top to the bottom.

“They say when there is insecurity, the government gets money. Everyone is benefitting. We also get money. Though for our money, blood is spilled so it continues.”
