Somalia government says it killed al Shabaab co-founder

Somalia’s government said late on Sunday, October 2, that it had killed Abdullahi Nadir, one of the co-founders of Islamist militant group al Shabaab, in an operation with international partners.

The country’s information ministry said that the operation that killed Nadir happened on Saturday, October 1.

It said he was al-Shabab’s chief prosecutor and was in line to replace the group’s leader, Ahmed Diriye, who is sick.

“His death is a thorn removed from the Somali nation,” the statement said.

“The government is grateful to the Somali people and international friends whose cooperation facilitated the killing of this leader who was an enemy of the Somali nation.”

In recent weeks, Somali security forces have touted gains made against the al-Qaeda-linked group while fighting alongside local self-defence groups.

But al-Shabab has continued to conduct deadly raids, including two last Friday that killed at least 16 people.

Nobody is totally well – Governor Umahi replies those questioning Tinubu’s health

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state has issued a response to those questioning the health of All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Fielding questions on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily today October 3, Umahi added that those asking such questions are being petty.

He also said that Tinubu’s workout video which is trending online, was taken without his knowledge.

Umahi said;

“Nobody is totally well, and nobody is totally sick; this is one point. Another point is that Nigerians are petty; some of us are petty.

“A man doing his workout, you know, is being videoed and circulated on social media without his knowledge.

“And so, a man that has life does not need to show any proof of life. Asiwaju has life, and he doesn’t need to show any proof of life, and you can see that.

“I think we should concentrate on tangibles because life is like being on the bus, and you don’t know where the next bus stop is.

“Some of the people talking about the health of the leaders of the country don’t even know when their bus stop is coming. So, we should rely on tangibles. Every life and health rests in the hand of God; that is how I look at it.”

FG warns ASUU against disobeying court’s order

The Federal government through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has warned the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) against disobeying the court’s order on its eight-month strike.

Justice Polycarp Hamman of the National Industrial Court in September ordered the varsity lecturers to suspend their strike and return to classrooms but ASUU appealed the ruling.

The Federal Government then directed the Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors of universities to reopen the institutions in a bid to force the varsity lecturers to return to work.Days later, the FG withdrew the directive.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 2 by the Labour ministry’s Deputy Director Press and Public Relations, Olajide Oshundun, Ngige accused the leadership of ASUU of misinforming and misleading its members and warned on the consequences of disobeying court’s order.

He, therefore, called on the union to respect the court’s order and return to classrooms while negotiations are concluded .

Ngige said:

“The union is dishonest and misleading its members and the general public, that it has filed an appeal as well as a stay of execution of the order of National Industrial Court on September 21, 2022, though it has none of this.

“Rather, ASUU only filed an application for permission to appeal the order. It also attached to the application, a proposed notice of appeal which it intends to file if the leave to appeal is granted. The application for a stay of execution as of this moment has not even been listed for hearing. Where is ASUU coming from?

“It is therefore contemptuous, dishonest and misleading for the union to tell its members that it has not only appealed the interlocutory injunction by the National Industrial Court, directing it to call off the strike and return to work but that it also has a stay of execution.

Vote competence and not religion – PFN tells Nigerians

President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Wale Oke has asked Nigerians to consider political candidates in the 2023 general election based on competence and not religion or ethnicity.

Oke who warned Nigerians against selling their future to money-bag politicians, stated that every voter should identify one of the 18 candidates in the presidential race that can take Nigeria to the promised land. Speaking on Sunday October 2, the PFN President said;

“If a Muslim can solve Nigeria’s problem, I will vote for him so far he will treat Muslims and Christians as equal stakeholders in Nigeria, and he will not favor one religion above another.

“For me, if a Hausa man emerges, okay, if it is Fulani man, good, If it is Igbo, Kanuri, Edo, Ibibio, or Yoruba man, okay, provided he stands for justice, equity, fairness, and one Nigeria. He must also be a man that can deal with the problem of Nigeria decisively.

“Vote for whoever has the capacity to turn around Nigeria, use your votes to change the fortune of the nation to give Nigerians the nation we want

“Let’s decide and go beyond religion sentiment, ethnicity, and party so that Nigeria can get to its destination.“Nigeria shall be beautiful and great, let us all cooperate with God so that we can get to the promised land..”

APC’s Keyamo, PDP’s Omokri react to Obidients’ rallies

Former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has said that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has disrupted the political space in the country.

Omokri, a staunch supporter of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, stated this late Saturday in reaction to the rallies held across the country by the supporters of Obi for the 2023 presidential election.

Describing the rallies as great achievements, he noted that the Obidient movement should not be disregarded by anyone who was politically conscious.

“The Obidient rallies at Festac and Amuwo were amazing. They are great achievements. Anyone who tries to belittle them is not politically astute. While Obi will not win in 2023, he has successfully disrupted politics in Nigeria.

Well done Obi! Well done Obidients!”, he tweeted.

However, in an earlier tweet, Omokri had said that the rallies were just a show of force by southeastern traders who closed down their shops.

“These so called ‘one million man marches’ are mostly a gathering of traders in various Nigerian towns and cities, who close down their markets (that are heavily dominated by people of southeastern origin), to do what in the military is called a show of force,” he tweeted.

The Spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, and Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has also reacted to the rallies by the Obidients on Saturday.

Mocking the supporters of Obi, Keyamo said the rallying Obidients were not more than a thousand people who were not more than the electorate needed at two polling units.

“The aerial shots are the best. Now, look at this: at best the ‘crowd’ here is not more than a thousand people which is approximately just two polling units,” he quote-tweeted a video from one of the rallies.

Anambra lawmaker recounts convoy attack, snubs award ceremony

The House of Representatives member representing Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo Constituency of Anambra State, Chris Azubogu, on Saturday, took time to reflect on the attack on his convoy by gunmen.

Azubogu, while recalling how his driver was killed in the attack on September 30, 2021, at Nnobi, in the Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, said he had shelved an award in his honour by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Saturday.

He expressed sadness that it was the first day at work for the late driver who was brutally killed in the attack.

The lawmaker explained that he shelved the award in his honour by the Anambra State chapter of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Saturday.

He further canvassed greater support for security agencies to enable them to protect lives and property, while commending the government’s onslaught against violent crimes.

He said,

“Exactly a year today, my convoy was viciously attacked by unknown assailants at Nnobi in the Idemili South LGA of Anambra State in a swift operation in which I was believed to be the principal target.

“As God would have it, I was not in the convoy which was coming to pick me from the airport.

Quite unfortunately though, one of the drivers in the convoy, Mr Ikechukwu, was killed in the attack. May his soul continue to rest in peace. Amen!

“The very sad curve for me was that the late Ikechukwu actually resumed work the same day he was brutally killed; after he had reached out to my chief driver who helped him secure the much needed job through which he had planned to fend for his young family.

“It was traumatic each time one remembers that a young man who strives to feed his family from the proceeds of a legitimate job was killed by heartless criminals who take liberty in destroying what they cannot create.

“Each time I mull that attack, I couldn’t help but wonder what could be the gain for people who have developed the penchant to waste human lives they cannot create.’’

UAD claims ASUU strike may work against Tinubu

The United Action for Democracy has said the ongoing strike will make a large number of Nigerian youths not to vote for the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the South-South Coordinator of the group, Enefa Georgewill, stated that the Buhari-led government had reduced the chances of the APC at the 2023 polls.

He stated that the ceaseless strike by various academic bodies in the country would lead to a mutiny against the party.

He said the APC-led government had not delivered on its promises to alleviate poverty and give the average Nigerian a better life, adding that Nigerians were becoming poorer.

“In terms of livelihood, people’s access to livelihood has further reduced in terms of naira to dollar.

As we speak, it is around N700 to a dollar and of course, this government met it less than N200 and it further goes to say that Nigerians are becoming poorer, and in terms of food, basic items such as rice, the price has skyrocketed.

He also expressed concern over the declining rate of electricity supply across the country.

“In terms of electricity that should help the informal sector and even the main sector to generate power to do some of the basic things, it’s nothing to write home about.

“Nigerians use other power sources like generators, and fuel that is supposed to serve the generator has moved from N55 to between N175 and N180 per litre. He stressed that no sensible Nigerian would vote for a political party that had “brought pain, backwardness and hunger to Nigerians”.

Reacting, the Director General, Asiwaju Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation, Adebayo Shittu, said the APC flag bearer would build on the development on the ground to make life better for Nigerians.

He stressed that Buhari was not to be blamed for the high cost of food items, adding that the President supported farmers and market women with needed funds.

He said,

“What is the failure of Buhari in prices of commodities that has skyrocketed? Is Buhari supposed to impose price control on commodities as well as many other items?

“Buhari can’t play God by rectifying the behaviour of Nigerians. So, this is the Nigeria factor for most of the things that have happened because Nigerians are always taking advantage of things by unduly increasing prices on local commodities.

Give Us Obi, Supporters Chant In London

A rally in support of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was held in London on Saturday.

Obi’s supporters converged on the Nigeria High Commission in London where some of them chanted, “Give Us Obi.”

Meanwhile, rallies for Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed held in different states and locations in Nigeria on Saturday.

Gridlock As ‘Obidients’ Rally At Lekki

A rally in support of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the Lekki area of Lagos on Saturday has resulted in heavy traffic.

There was police presence in the area and Lekki Tollgate to enforce a court order that Obi’s supporters shouldn’t converge at that location.

Atiku meets with Wike, promises to support him for president in 2027

PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, had a closed-door meeting in Abuja last night, to resolve their differences.

The Nation reports that at the meeting, Atiku pledged to support Wike’s presidential bid in 2027 if Wike agrees to sheathe his sword and support him (Atiku) in the 2023 election.

The duo and their supporters have been locked in a face-off since June when the former vice president overlooked Wike and picked Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

Previous efforts to reconcile them had failed to yield any positive result. Atiku even appeared to have decided to ignore Wike, and proceeded with his campaign while the Rivers State Governor and his supporters threatened to have nothing to do with the Atiku presidential campaign.

Five of the 11 state governors elected on the platform of PDP are in Wike’s camp, leading to a major crack in the party.

In a fresh effort to resolve their differences, Atiku met with Wike last night where he prevailed on Wike’s camp to join the campaign train of PDP.

Sources close to the meeting said the PDP presidential candidate offered to back Wike for the presidency in 2027. Wike was non-committal to Atiku because of past breaches of commitment, it was gathered.

The governor reportedly said he would consult his group and revert to Atiku. Sources at the meeting also stated that Wike was not excited about the 2027 prospect in view of a similar promise made by Atiku to the Igbo during a meeting with PDP stakeholders in Enugu earlier this week.

A source, who was privy to what transpired, told the publication;

“Again, Atiku extended the olive branch to Wike. He pleaded with the governor to look at the bigger picture of winning the 2023 poll.He asked Wike to prevail on his group to join the PDP campaign train.

Atiku promised to be fair to all PDP members despite the differences of the past few weeks which were caused by the outcome of the party’s presidential primaries.”

Another highly-placed source said Atiku offered to support Wike in 2027 if he gives necessary support to him in the ongoing campaign.

“Wike was not forthcoming and he avoided an outright commitment to Atiku’s request to be part of the PDP campaign team. He told Atiku that he would go and consult with his team and get back to him. So, he has kept Atiku in suspense again. We don’t know what the governor and his strategists will say.”

A source in Wike’s camp said “The governor wasn’t excited about the 2027 poll prospect because he made the Igbo a similar offer in Enugu a few days ago.

The major challenge which Wike felt Atiku did not address was trust deficit. Our camp is of the opinion that Atiku doesn’t walk the talk on any agreement or issue because of pressure here and there.

This crisis would not have reached this level if Atiku had kept faith with London talks and unwritten agreement with Wike. Our group will soon meet on the latest overtures from Atiku.”

Court sacks Osun state governor, Gboyega Oyetola and his deputy as APC candidates in the July 16 governorship election

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has nullified the nomination of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and his Deputy Governorship candidate, Benedict Alabi on the grounds that Governor Mai Mala Buni who submitted their names to INEC, violated the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 82(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The verdict was given on Friday, September 30, in a suit filed by a member of the party, Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), challenging the nomination and sponsorship of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and his deputy as the duly nominated candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In challenging the competence of the suit, Mr Kunle Adegoke (SAN) who represented Governor Isiaka Oyetola contended, among other grounds that the Plaintiff did not have the locus to commence the action and that the suit was statute-barred.

In his opposing arguments, Ogunwumiju who led Muyiwa Atoyebi SAN and Ademola Abimbola submitted that the Plaintiff rightly commenced the suit under Section 285(14) (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

Delivering judgment in the case, the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite agreed with the submissions of the Plaintiff’s counsel and declared as null and void, the nomination of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and Benedict Alabi by the APC.

The court also held that Governor Mai Mala Buni acted in contravention of the provision of Section 183 of the Constitution when he held dual executive positions as the Governor of Yo e State and the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of APC.

The court held that the steps or decisions taken by Governor Mai Mala Buni, including forwarding the names of Governor Isiaka Oyetola and Benedict Alabi to INEC, amounted to a nullity in law.

Counsel to Gov Oyetola, Adegoke says his team will appeal the judgment.

Here is the full text of President Buhari’s speech on Nigeria’s 62nd independence anniversary.

Read below…

Fellow Nigerians,I address you today, with a deep sense of gratitude to God and a high level of appreciation to all Nigerians whose tremendous goodwill gave me the opportunity to provide leadership for our great country at one of the trying times in her history.

2. Conscious that today’s address would be my last on an Independence Day as your President; I speak to the millions of Nigerians, who believed in me, propelled and stood by me in my quest to bequeath a country where all citizens have equal opportunities to achieve their lives desires in a peaceful atmosphere.

3. I am honoured to say that my story in the annals of Nigeria’s history is no household secret. My various attempts, failures and eventual success in being elected as a Democratic President in 2015 was made possible by the majority of Nigerians.

4. When you elected me, I readily acknowledged that the tasks before me were daunting but surmountable because of the growing national consensus that our chosen route to national development was democracy.

5. This democracy was to be anchored on a clear understanding, application and the principles of separation of powers supported by a reformed public service that is more effective.

6. I then pledged to Improve the Economy, Tackle Corruption and Fight Insecurity and this was further strengthened by my commitment to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in ten years as the central plank of my second term in 2019.

7. To the Glory of God and His Grace as well as the commitment and passion displayed by many Nigerian supporters, we have made appreciable progress in these areas but not yet at our destination.

8. Mindful of the task before us, we took some time in settling down and we re-positioned the Economy by providing strategic interventions in core areas at both the Federal and Sub-National levels.

9. One of the areas where we have made significant progress is in the eradication of deeply entrenched corruption that permeates all facets of our national development.

10. We strengthened the Institutions for tackling corruption and also cultivated international support, which aided the repatriation of huge sums of money illegally kept outside the country.

11. The increasing number of prosecutions and convictions, with associated refunds of large sums of money is still ongoing. Furthermore, we would continue to block opportunities that encourage corrupt practices.

12. In order to address Insecurity, we worked methodically in reducing Insurgency in the North East, Militancy in the Niger Delta, Ethnic and Religious Tensions in some sections of Nigeria along with other problems threatening our country.

13. Our efforts in re-setting the economy manifested in Nigeria exiting two economic recessions by the very practical and realistic monetary and fiscal measures to ensure effective public financial management.

In addition, the effective implementation of the Treasury Single Account and cutting down on the cost of governance also facilitated early exits from recessions.

14. Fellow Nigerians, this administration removed several decades uncertainty for potential Investors in the Oil & Gas sector with the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021.

This landmark legislation created opportunities for foreign investments in addition to improving transparency in the management of the sector.

15. Our administration has given the desired priority to the Agricultural Sector through a series of incentives to Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises that resulted in creating millions of jobs.

Leading this initiative, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s intervention in a number of areas as well as the Anchor Borrowers Programme had created the required leverages for Nigerians towards self-sufficiency in food and the necessary attraction for farming as a business.

16. The growing contribution of non-oil exports, especially in agriculture, information and communication technology as well as the performing arts to our national economy will enhance our foreign exchange earnings.

17. We are confronting current economic challenges such as debt burden, growing inflation, living standards and increasing unemployment accentuated by our growing youthful population.

These problems are globally induced and we would continue to ensure that their negative effects are addressed in our policies.

18. This administration will continue to ensure that our fiscal policies are supported by a robust and contemporary monetary policy that recognises our peculiarities in the midst of the growing global economic difficulties.

19. This is evidenced by the recent Monetary Policy Committee decision to maintain all parameters, especially interest rates and marginally increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 14% to 15.5% and the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) from 27.5% to 32.5%. It is projected that this would further insulate our economy from over exposure to uncertainties at the international market by restraining growth in core inflation.

20. As we continue to de-escalate the security challenges that confronted us at inception of this administration, newer forms alien to our country began to manifest especially in the areas of kidnappings, molestations/killings of innocent citizens, banditry, all of which are being addressed by our security forces.

21. I share the pains Nigerians are going through and I assure you that your resilience and patience would not be in vain as this administration continues to reposition as well as strengthen the security agencies to enable them to deal with all forms of security challenges.

22. At the inception of this administration in 2015, I provided the funding requirements of the security agencies which was also improved in my second tenure in 2019 to enable them to surmount security challenges. We will continue on this path until our efforts yield the desired results.

23. As we put in place all measures to ensure that Nigeria takes her place in the Comity of Nations, we recognize the importance of a well-educated populace as a panacea to most of the challenges we face.

24. We have, therefore, pursued policies and implemented programmes designed to create a literate and proficient society that ensures that citizens are availed with opportunities for life-long achievements.

25. I must confess that I am very pained by the recurring disruption to our tertiary education system and I am using this Independence Day celebration to re-iterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limits of the scarce resources available. This administration has made appreciable progress in redressing these issues that have been lingering for over eleven years.

26. The Federal Government will continue to mobilize resources both internationally and nationally towards funding education to ensure that our citizens are well educated and skilled in various vocations in view of the fact that education is a leading determinant of economic growth and employment generation.

27. Fellow Nigerians, we have also improved our health facilities, especially during and after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which attracted commendation of the global community.

28. As you are aware, Nigeria was one of the countries that defied global predictions of the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic because of our resilience, commitment and passion with which we individually and collectively managed the pandemic.

29. This administration embarked on addressing critical ecological challenges across the country in order to mitigate the impact of Climate Change manifesting in the form of flood, soil erosion, desertification, air pollution amongst others.

30. We will continue to ensure that our infrastructure drive remains the key to Nigeria’s economic growth and for which every Nigerian will feel the impact.

31. The Federal Government is already expanding ports operations to ensure that they provide opportunities for the growth of the Nigerian economy.

32. We have also continued to accelerate our infrastructure development through serviceable and transparent borrowing, improved capital inflow & increased revenue generation by expanding the tax bases and prudent management of investment proceeds in the Sovereign Wealth Fund.

33. To further open up our communities to economic activities, we have continued to boost our railway infrastructure with the completion of a good number of critical railways and at the same time rehabilitating as well as upgrading obsolete equipment.

34. I am pleased to inform my fellow citizens that besides our emphasis on infrastructural development with its attendant opportunities for job creation, employment generation and subsequent poverty reduction, our focused intervention directly to Nigerians through the National Social Investment Programme is also yielding benefits.

35. There is hardly any ward, village or local government in Nigeria today that has not benefited from one of the following: N-Power, trader-moni, market moni, subsidized loans, business grants or Conditional Cash Transfers.

36. All the aforementioned programmes along with various interventions by the National Social Investment programme, direct support to victims of flooding and other forms of disasters have provided succor to the affected Nigerians.

37. Fellow Nigerians, no matter what gains we make, without a good governance system anchored on electing credible leaders on the basis of free, fair, credible and transparent elections, our efforts would not be enough.

38. It is for this reason that I have resolved to bequeath a sustainable democratic culture which will remain lasting. The signing of the Electoral Act 2021 as amended with landmark provisions further assures us of a more transparent and inclusive Electoral Process.

39. Having witnessed at close quarters, the pains, anguish and disappointment of being a victim of an unfair electoral process, the pursuit of an electoral system and processes that guarantee election of leaders by citizens remains the guiding light as I prepare to wind down our administration.

40. You would all agree that the recent elections in the past two years in some states (notably Anambra, Ekiti and Osun) and a few federal constituencies have shown a high degree of credibility, transparency and freedom of choice with the people’s votes actually counting. This I promise would be improved upon as we move towards the 2023 General Elections.

41. As we begin the transition process to another democratically elected government, I want to implore all aspirants to conduct issues-based campaigns devoid of hate speeches as well as other negative and divisive tendencies.

42. I also want to express my wish that we see more female and youth participation in the forthcoming electoral cycle. I am sure that our teeming and energetic youths now realise that violence generally mar elections and so should desist from being used by politicians for this purpose.

43. Reforms in the public sector are already yielding results especially in the delivery of services. On this note, I urge the general public to demand for citizen-centred services from the relevant authorities.

44. On the international front, we have continued to take advantage of our bilateral and multilateral platforms to explore cooperation with friendly countries and partners whenever these areas of cooperation are to the advantage of Nigeria.

45. Fellow Nigerians, in the past few years we have witnessed and overcome a good number of challenges that would ordinarily have destroyed our Nation. However, the indefatigable spirit of the Nigerian people has ensured that we overcome our challenges.

46. It is in this spirit that I call on all of us to individually and collectively bring to the fore in dealing with all our development issues.

47. I was called to serve, along with my team, I saw an opportunity to create a better Nigeria which we have done with the support of Nigerians.

Almighty God and the good people of Nigeria supported us in laying a solid foundation for the Nigeria of our dreams.

I thank you all and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Independence Day: Return to classrooms, President Buhari urges striking lecturers

President Muhammadu Buhari delivered a Nationwide broadcast this morning to commemorate the 62nd Independence day celebration of the country.

During his speech, President Buhari urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to call off its over seven-month industrial strike and return to the classrooms.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14, 2022 over contending issues including unpaid allowances and poor welfare.

“I am using this Independence Day celebration to reiterate my call for the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities to return to the classroom while assuring them to deal with their contending issues within the limit of the scarce resources,” the President said in his broadcast.

No protest is allowed at Lekki tollgate – Lagos police

The Lagos state police command has warned against any form at Lekki Toll Gate.

In a statement released on Friday September 30 by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command stated that while it is not averse to the peoples’ right to freedom of assembly and association, and expression, it would equally live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons infringe on the fundamental human rights of others, especially the rights to freedom of movement and right to dignity of human persons, especially under the guise of rally or procession.

The statement read;

“It has become imperative to reemphasise that no form of rally whatsoever will be allowed at the Lekki Toll gate on October 1, 2022.

“This emphasis has become necessary to enlighten Nigerians that might be misled into converging at the toll gate.

A court of competent jurisdiction has ruled that no person is allowed to converge at the Lekki Toll gate for whatever reason.

“In conformity with its mandate to protect life and property, the Lagos State Police Command under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, will leave no stone unturned in ensuring total compliance with the court order and an emplacement of adequate security in the state.

“The warning therefore goes that anyone found flouting the court order or infringing on the rights of other Nigerians will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“Meanwhile, the CP enjoins all peace loving persons to go about their lawful duties without fear of harassment or intimidation, reiterating that adequate security assets have been strategically deployed to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians at designated rally venues and across the state at large.”

Bandits accept rice and beans in exchange for six hostages

Six hostages have been released by bandits in Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna State, after they collected 20 mudu (measures) of rice, 20 mudu of beans, 25 litres of red oil, 25 litres of groundnut oil and recharge card of N10,000 as ransom.

The bandits had killed a farmer and abducted 20 persons from their farms in Jangali and Kwaga communities of Birnin-Gwari.

Confirming the release of the hostages yesterday September 29, Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU) chairman Ishaq Usman Kasai, said the bandits have equally told some farming communities to pay 12 million in levies before they would harvest their crops.

Kasai said;

“The four people of Unguwan Liman who were kidnapped on Saturday and one at Unguwan Shekarau were released yesterday Wednesday after payment of 2 million and N500,000, respectively.

“Five farmers kidnapped on Thursday 15/9/2022 at Kurgin Gabas and Sabon-Layi areas have luckily escaped from the kidnappers’ den after spending a week in captivity.

“Regrettably, a farmer was killed at Shiwaka community on Tuesday 27/9/2022 after being tied to a tree; and more than 20 people were kidnapped on Wednesday 28/9/2022.

“The bandits informed some farming communities including Kwaga, Kwanan-Shehu, Unguwan Liman and Unguwan Shekarau to pay levies of N12 million to be allowed to continue harvesting their crops. These communities were given until Friday (today) to meet the conditions, failing which they would kidnap any person found at a farm.

The Union found that these helpless communities have started making contribution based on farm size to meet the condition and the dateline.”

Bobrisky’s lifestyle needs urgent attention from the FG – Gov Okowa’s aide, Ossai Success

An aide to the governor of Delta state, Ossai Success Ovie, has said that Bobrisky is a bad influence on the youths in Nigeria and has called on the Federal government to pay urgent attention to the lifestyle of the popular crossdresser.

In a post shared on his Facebook page, Ossai said;

”Bobrisky is a bad influence to our youths .

The case of Bobrisky should be looked into by the Nigeria Government because he is affecting our generation negatively.

He is a bad influence to our youths.

Today, some of our youths want to emulate him because they are seeing the kind of lifestyle he is displaying.

It seems we have lost our core value as a people.

What he is doing is against our tradition, country laws , Christianity and Muslim.

We want reduction in crime yet some persons who are acting against the law are walking freely and influencing others negatively.

The kind of lifestyle Bobrisky is living needs urgent attention from our government.

My name is Ossai Ovie Success”

Governors reject FG’s plan to privatize power plants

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has kicked against Federal Government’s proposal to privatize National Integrated Power Plants (NIPPs).

The federal government is proposing to privatize the following power plants;

Benin Generation Company Ltd, Calabar Generation Company Ltd, Geregu Generation Company Ltd, Olorunsogo Generation Company Ltd and Omotosho Generation Company Ltd. Commenting on the proposal on Thursday September 29, outgoing NGF Chairman and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, said Governors opposed the plan because all stakeholders were not carried along in the scheme of things.

Fayemi said;

“We examined the issues relating to the proposed privatisation of the power project and we took a decision that at this point in time, the NGF is opposed to the sale of any of the plants until appropriate steps have been taken that would take into consideration the interest of states that are also equity holders in those plants.

“We’ll continue to do whatever we can to ensure the resources of Nigeria stay with the Nigerian people and are not filtered away in a manner we can’t explain.”

The NGF who also advised the Federal Government against sanctioning the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, urged the federal government to rather resolve the contentious issues in the interest of the students and Nigeria.

Reps to dialogue with Buhari next week over ASUU strike – Gbajabiamila

The leadership of the House of Representatives will be meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on the resolution of the ongoing face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila who made the announcement after a meeting with stakeholders, said they’ll be sharing a report of its interactions with key stakeholders in the dispute and come up with recommendations that will enable the President to view the issues at stake from an informed second option.

Those who attended the meeting include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Sen Chris Ngige; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Sylva Okolieaboh; the Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze; the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, represented; as well as the Chairman, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta among others.

Also present was the delegation from ASUU led by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

Reiterating that the interest of the children that had been at the receiving end of the trade dispute should be paramount, Gbajabiamila appealed to both sides to give in and make concessions from their initial demands.

He said;

“We will put together our recommendations and our thoughts and take it to Mr. President, that’s why we are here to interface and look for solutions.

“Again let me repeat, we are running a government, nobody, no individual, no group, whether you are legislative, judiciary or whatever can be above the government, can be above the law.

“We can’t be against and I’m speaking specifically to ASUU, we did not say because the court has given judgment, that’s the end of our conversation. In spite of the court judgment, we are still looking for solutions, we didn’t even address it here, I don’t want to address it.

“Otherwise, we could’ve said, if government has given judgment, I don’t know if there’s a stay of execution, I don’t know.

“We are appealing to you, the Judiciary has spoken, the Executive has spoken, the Legislature is about to speak together with the Executive; everybody cannot be wrong and only one person is right.

For me I’m happy with the solution on UTAS, no victor, no vanquished, everybody is being carried along.“for the sake of emphasis, the House is pleading with you, let’s put all interest aside and look at the interest of our children.

“The white paper we told you we’ll get, the letter is here, it’s now waiting for the President’s final approval.

“On revitalization, I asked the DG budget here if provision has been made in the budget. We made a promise to you, and we are staying by that promise.

“Regarding the issue of UTAS, you said you haven’t seen the report; we have it here, so we’ve been working for you”.
