‘Remain calm’, Akeredolu tells Ondo residents amid calls for cancellation of election results

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo has asked residents of the state to remain calm as the opposition parties continue to call for the cancellation of results of Saturday’s presidential election.

Mr Akeredolu, on Tuesday, said that residents of Ondo state have no reason to succumb to the agitations of the members of the opposition party.

“We understand that some political parties are agitated but there is no reason for our people to succumb to agitations. I urge you all to remain calm,” the governor said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Richard Olatunde.

Mr Akeredolu’s statement was in response to the call made by members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), demanding for the cancellation of the election results conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The opposition political parties, joined by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have accused INEC of ‘manipulating’ the results of the election in alleged “connivance” with the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The parties are questioning why the electoral umpire has refused to electronically upload the results of Saturday’s exercise on its server (portal) despite the assurance it gave Nigerians before the election took place.

Speaking further, Mr Akeredolu asked the people of the state not to be caught in the issues already being agitated for by the opposition political parties.

He noted that the issues would be resolved among the parties while asking the residents of the state not to entertain fear but go about their normal daily activities.

“Don’t be caught in the web as the issues at hand are among political parties. The parties will be resolved as time goes on. Let us go about our daily activities without fear of intimidation,” the governor said.

He later saluted the people for turning out during Saturday’s elections and voting for the APC candidates from top to bottom.

While describing the people of the state as unique and distinct, Mr Akeredolu said that the voice of the people was unanimous and loud in choosing the candidates of the party across the board.

“I thank you all for your display of love and support for all candidates of the APC. The huge votes garnered by our party in this last election is an unequivocal statement of your acceptability and support for our government in the State and the party.

“Before the elections, I urged you all to rise above the frustrations at the fuel stations and ATMs and vote for the candidates of the APC. Your response was loud and heartwarming. We have shown that we are a people of immeasurable knowledge and faith. You are reliable and trustworthy,” he said.

According to him, “Your display of courage and resilience is commendable. Your stance and convictions on our collective struggles have been reflected in your choice and acceptability. We shall expend all efforts toward improving lives and developing our State. This march towards shared prosperity shall receive our utmost priority.

“Undoubtedly, this victory is yours. The gains shall fulfill your desirabilities and deepen your hope for a united and prosperous nation. We are thankful and honoured with your massive votes and turnout. You have written our names in gold and restored our glory as the home of progressives.”

The Governor, however, pleaded with the people of the state to turn out again in large numbers in the March 11 election and vote for the candidates of the APC again in the exercise.

Reason APC calls on DSS for the arrest of Pastor Paul Enenche

Here is the reason APC is calling on DSS to apprehend and restrain clergyman Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis Church Abuja.

While speaking on Sunday, February 26 in his Church, Enenche who is a supporter of Labour Party’s Peter Obi, condemned the flaws witnessed in last Saturday, February 25 presidential election.

He warned that every attempt at scuttling the will of the people or frustrating the zeal of the youth will produce only unimaginable consequences. People have voted, and they are watching their votes.

At their press conference on Monday, February 27, the APC alleged the Enenche desecrated the altar by his “hate speech” and called on the DSS to apprehend him alongside Dino Melaye and Dele Momodu and restrain them.

NHRC releases malpractices, vote-buying statistics

The National Human Rights Commission has reported the attempts of voter intimidation by thugs in some states of the federation.

The commission in the report it received through its special monitoring activities states that voting was disrupted due to incidents of violence.

In its “Preliminary Statement of the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Elections,” signed by the Secretary of the commission, Tony Ojukwu, the NHRC stated that, “There were various reports of attempts to intimidate voters and INEC officials by party supporters and thugs.

“These reports were received from states such as Rivers, Delta, Lagos, Kogi and Imo. NHRC monitors reported that in eight per cent of polling units, accreditation and voting were disrupted for various reasons, including the malfunctioning of election equipment and incidents of violence.”

The commission said it also got reports of vote-buying from 42 locations across the country, “particularly in Lagos, Imo, Sokoto, Jigawa, Edo, Nasarawa, Jigawa and Kogi states. Voters were offered money or other incentives to influence their votes.”

The commission also observed the inability of law enforcement agents to checkmate violence at the polling units, adding that cases of human rights violations by security personnel were also reported.

It also reported poor crowd management adding that, “in some polling units, the crowd was overwhelming and the security personnel were few in number.”

Earlier, the commission had swung into action in readiness to enforce its mandate of promoting human rights.

It launched its 2023 election project “Mobilising Voters for Election” to ensure access, participation and accountability in the electoral process.

The MOVE project monitored, among others, the collection of PVCs across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, monitoring of hate speeches and setting up of a National Hate Speech Register.

The commission on February 25, 2023 mobilised and deployed 800 human rights monitors across the 36 states and the FCT to monitor elections, while it also monitored the conduct of law enforcement and security personnel.

APC asks DSS to arrest Enenche, Dino Melaye

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council on Monday called on the Department of State Services to invite the General Overseer of Dunamis Church, Paul Enenche, over his ‘inciting sermon’ on the pulpit last Sunday.

Also, the APC PCC asked security agencies to arrest two spokespersons for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Dino Melaye and Dele Momodu, for allegedly attempting to heat the polity through their utterances.

The PCC Special Adviser on Media and Strategic Communications, Dele Alake, made the call in Abuja on Monday during a press conference.

He said;

“We note with utmost concern those inciting comments and call to violence by some spokespersons for the opposition, especially those from the Peoples Democratic Party.

We are particularly concerned and call on the State Security Services and the Nigeria Police Force to immediately restrain persons such as Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu and a certain Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis Church from their clear call to violence.

“Melaye’s tweet threatening violence, Momodu going on the TV to announce a purported winner and Enenche’s hate speech from the pulpit violate every law of the land.

They should not go scot-free. The Christians community in this nation should even rise up to call him to order before the invitation by security agencies.

We encourage the DSS to do their work by apprehending and restraining these people calling for violence to reduce the tension.”

Also speaking, a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, described the Dunamis preacher’s action as a disgrace to the Pentecostal mission society.

He said;

“I was invited by the DSS for a tweet I made. We are all aware of that. Therefore I see Eneche’s outburst as an insult to so many pastors, particularly Pentecostals like myself. That is because when this violence they are calling for begins, they will run away and leave hapless Nigerians to face it.

“What the opposition is doing is trying to heat up the polity and intimidate our supporters.”

NLC declares announced results illegitimate, warns INEC against plunging Nigeria into chaos

The NLC once again warns that any election result that does not reflect the wishes of the people will not only spell doom for democracy but will also render the benefiting government of such heist illegitimate. Sustainable governments are built on sovereign will.

The reason is that such government is akin to a coup though not a military one but organised by civilian INEC against the fundamental rights and choices of the people as expressed through the ballot last Saturday. Every government needs legitimacy to govern freely.

However this can only be conferred by the will of the people freely given in an election. When that will is circumvented by whatsoever means, the government loses the very foundation that it needs to be anchored to find acceptance thus govern.

These very basic elements are clearly lacking in what INEC seems to be in a rush to plunge Nigeria into.

As it stands now, the current Presidential result collation lacks legitimacy as it has been questioned critically by major stakeholders with INEC unable to give satisfactory explanations to the issues raised.

Since INEC has compromised the sources of the results from the Polling units by the mere action of the clear sabotage of the BVAS an instrument that had hitherto given Nigerians hope for a more free, fair, credible and acceptable election in 2023, there is nothing that will restore this hope and build belief than to go back to the results as captured by the BVAS.

If this is no longer possible, we call for a pause in further announcement of the Presidential results and carry out a backward review before deciding on the way forward.

INEC’s actions have sabotaged the integrity of the election and undermine the credibility of its outcomes.

It is the process that confers legitimacy on the outcome and anything that contaminates it renders the outcomes inchoate.

This is not what this country needs right now especially when we are confronted with military insurgencies, banditry, Kidnappings and other very criminal acts around the nation.

We need outcomes that builds national cohesion and solidarity and not one that divides.

Nigerian workers find it difficult to believe that at this day and age, INEC could not collate results from its own Servers when far less funded organisations both locally and internationally have done so seamlessly?

Many Organisations and nations have performed this very basic tasks without this storm. It is neither the lack of capacity nor the paucity of resources at INEC’s disposal that has led to this farce but the greed factor that has led to the intentional scuttling of a simple process for the benefit of a few individuals and to the detriment of the whole nation.

A product is always subject to the processes that gives birth to it and if that process becomes contaminated, the product becomes defiled.

We do not understand the driving force behind INEC’s pursuit of announcing a Presidential election result with processes that are clearly fraught with serious irregularities.

We do not understand why INEC has suddenly become deaf to sound reason but continues to pursue a path that may put the whole nation in crisis. It will be the height of irresponsibility to rush our nation into a cul-de-sac.

A government that is built on subverting the sovereign will cannot be seen to be legitimate. Such illegitimacy will dog the footsteps of the administration and will surely make it incapable of providing acceptable governance to the people.

If INEC announces a result that is dogged by this confusion and questions, how can a government built on it survive?

How can such a government hope to mobilise the people?

How will such a government build trust and confidence in the people for whatever policies and programmes that may become the anchor for its governance projections?

How can such government gather the support of the citizen it hopes to lead?

How can it wield authority?

The NLC is seriously worried knowing that a government that lacks legitimacy is like a fish out of water and can only survive by the sheer strength of brutal force thus a recipe for national disaster.

INEC should therefore not give Nigerians an “Abiku or Ogbanje” that is billed to give us so much trouble and eventually die in infancy. This nation must be saved from this avoidable disaster.

INEC must allow reason to prevail and remove its legs from the pedal that is clearly headed for the rocks. No good will come from where it is taking Nigerians to.

We are sure that a government that is unacceptable to the people will suffer severely and may be prone to social instability. This illegitimate result must not be announced. A stitch in time they say, saves nine.

Let us consider this nation first before our selfish designs. We will not accept a government built on fraud and we are sure that other critical national stakeholders will also not accept such contraption.

Suspend further announcement of the results or completely cancel the entire election and make plans for another election- Labour party tells INEC

The Labour party has called for the suspension of the announcement of election results and cancellation of the ‘’compromised” election.

The Presidential Campaign Council of the Labour Party made the call today February 27.

At a press briefing, Dr Akin Osuntokun, who is the Director-General of the Labour Party Campaign Council said President Buhari and the INEC chairman, Yakub Mahmood, had on several occasions come out to promise Nigerians a free and fair election with the passage of the new Electoral Act but that what has become glaring is that none of these promises has been kept.

Osuntokun stated that all promises about deploying a fail-safe system anchored on BVAS were broken as the internet and social media are awash with videos and photographic pieces of evidence of the pervasive violence and attacks that were visited on Nigerians during the elections, adding that some attacks were still ongoing across the country.

He said that there are numerous evidence of collusion between INEC and the security forces to subvert the will of the people, stressing that INEC’s guidelines on the conduct of the elections were extensively breached, and INEC has evidently been very reluctant to make the necessary adjustment to remedy the situation.

‘’Contrary to the publicly advertised guidelines for the conduct of the elections, we are convinced that the processes leading to the results have been severely compromised.

Consequently, we state that we have lost confidence in the results being collated and announced.

Nigerians have inundated us with calls and protests over INEC’s non-compliance with provisions of the electoral guidelines and the obvious manipulations of the election results.

We, hereby, call on INEC to suspend the further announcement of the results, and follow its own guidelines or completely cancel the entire election and make plans for another election with strict compliance with the stipulated laws and guidelines,he said.

”Lie from the pit of hell”- Gov Wike denies moving around with soldiers to intimidate voters during elections

The Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has denied allegations that he moved around with soldiers to intimidate and cause disruption during last Saturday, February 25, Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

In a statement released by the State Commissioner for Information, Chris Finebone, Governor Wike said the allegations that he was involved in electoral misconduct during the election are just the wicked imagination of failed evil doers.

“Let it be clearly stated that after Gov. Wike and his wife managed to cast their vote last Saturday, they quietly returned to their home and never stepped out for the rest of the day.

It was, therefore, surprising that the same individuals who, for reasons best known to them, decided to lie against the governor, have gone ahead to raise false accusations suggesting that Gov. Wike moved about with soldiers intimidating people and influencing voting and collation of votes. This is, indeed, a lie taken from the very abyss of hell.

For the avoidance of doubt, Gov. Wike does not have a single soldier in his formal and informal entourage at any time, more so, during election time. The governor did not for whatever reason visit or move around after casting his vote.

The accusation of him moving around to intimidate or cause any disruption of any kind derives only from the wicked imagination of evil doers but they have failed.” the statement read

Finebone mentioned that a group of persons have been peddling a doctored audio and visual clip aimed at incriminating the governor and tarnishing his image.

“Of particular mention is a doctored audio clip that was concocted by Saharareporters during the 2016 re-run election in Rivers State in which they purported same to be a discussion between the governor and Hon. Dum Dekor.

That audio concoction was duly discredited and discarded as a piece of rubbish masterminded by evil people to tarnish the image of Gov. Wike. But in a hurry to throw dirt at the governor this time, some people decided to exhume and use same old discredited cl
