Senior Nigerian lawyer Pius Akubo rejects appointment to Tinubu’s legal team

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Pius Akubo has rejected the appointment to be part of President-elect Bola Tinubu’s legal team expected to defend his controversial win in the February 25 presidential election.

Mr Akubo said he was unaware of the appointment, and there had been no official communication between himself and Mr Tinubu’s camp.

“In the last twenty-four (24) hours or so, the social media space has been agog with a trending unsigned letter in respect of appointment of Presidential Election Petition Legal Team by All Progressives Congress (APC) wherein my name is listed as number 10,” said the senior lawyer in a statement.

Mr Akubo added;

“With all due respect, I wish to state that I had no prior knowledge of the said appointment. As a matter of fact, I have not received any official communication on the subject matter hitherto. Suffice it to say that I was taken by surprise to hear of the said appointment vide social media.”

Mr Akubo pointed out that he could not defend the former Lagos governor for personal reasons even if such contemplations were being made. “In the circumstance and for personal reasons, I hereby decline the said appointment,” he added.

The Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party are seeking to contest Mr Tinubu’s victory. With the PDP and Labour claiming victory in the election, the country is set to witness a consequential legal dispute that could last for several months.

Lagos youths are my children, I’ve provided jobs for them on construction sites- Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos says youth in the state are his “children” and his administration in the past four years has provided them jobs on construction sites.

Mr Sanwo-Olu made this statement when asked about his plans for youths who are critical of his administration in an interview with Arise TV on Wednesday.

“They are my children. They are my bosses in some space. Because I identify with all of them at various levels. You know, it is a large number and there is no way I can satisfy every single person,” Mr Sanwo-Olu said.

“If I do a road construction, it is not for me. It is about the number of youths that are working as supervisors, as labourers, as engineers, on that site. So it has a ripple effect.”

Speaking further, Mr Sanwo-Olu said his government is providing enabling environment for youths to thrive and focused on how to get people out of unemployment and poverty.

“Another area which they (youth) want is technology for example, we are the only state in the country providing enabling environment for them.

“In less than two years, we have seen international organisations coming into Lagos to make foreign direct investments – runs into billions. In fact, Lagos has become the tech start-up hub in Africa and it is because of the economy we have provided for them,” said Mr Sanwo-Olu.

The Lagos governor is fighting for re-election in the governorship election scheduled for Saturday.

Mr Sanwo-Olu’s major challenger, Gbadebo Rhodes Viviour of the Labour Party, has garnered more support going by February 25 presidential election in which Peter Obi polled 582,454, defeating the All Progressive Congress presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, who polled 572, 606 votes in Lagos.

INEC shifts governorship, state assembly elections to March 18

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections till March 18.

The exercise was previously scheduled to hold on March 11, but INEC, citing a logistics crisis stemming from BVAS configuration and transportation, said the election could not hold again as scheduled following a meeting of its executives on Wednesday evening.

“The elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations,” an official familiar with the meeting told Peoples Gazette by telephone on Wednesday night.

“We should be able to get everything in order before March 18.”

The meeting was still underway at INEC headquarters in Abuja as of the time of filing this report.

The commission had convinced the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to vary its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar permission to inspect the election materials on the premise that it had to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduction of the polls this Saturday.

UAE ignores Buhari’s plea, maintains indefinite visa ban on Nigerians

The United Arab Emirates has disregarded the pleas of President Muhammadu Buhari to lift a visa ban slammed on Nigerian nationals since October 2022. The ban, however, does not affect persons holding diplomatic passports.

Last month, Mr Buhari had appealed to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayad Al Nahyan, the UAE president, to remove the visa ban on his country people in a telephone conversation whose content was relayed by his media aide, Garba Shehu.

The Nigerian leader, via the phone, disclosed that he had given instructions to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to increase the amount of foreign exchange allocated to the Emirates Airlines, the bane of the now-resolved months-long diplomatic row between the two nations and as a show of goodwill towards the Arab nation.

Since the phone conversation took place nearly a month ago and with Mr Buhari’s presidency ending in June, the UAE appears uninterested in his offer and has remained silent on the matter.

Instead, the Emirati government has maintained the travel restrictions on Nigerians and other Africans whom it has accused of constituting unrest in its territory through cultism and other illegal activities.

It remains unclear whether Mr Buhari will continue to persuade the Sheikh to remove the ban before his presidency expires or whether he will leave the incoming president, Bola Tinubu, to shoulder that responsibility.

Atiku employs 19 SANs to challenge Tinubu’s victory

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has put together a legal team of 19 Senior Advocates of Nigeria to challenge the outcome of the February 25 election.

Atiku briefed them on Wednesday at his campaign Headquarters in Abuja, asking them to “establish the claim of illegality in the election and reclaim the mandate of the Nigerian people.”

The team is headed by a seasoned litigation and commercial lawyer, JK Gadzama.

He further declared that it is crucial for them to go through this process not just for himself and PDP, but also to reinforce constitutional democracy and safeguard it for future generations.

The list of SANs includes Chief Chris Uche, Paul Usoro, Tayo Jegede, Ken Mozia, Chief Mike Ozekhome, Mahmood Magaji, Joe Abraham, Chukwuma Umeh, Garba Tetengi and Chief Emeka Etiaba – as well as Chief Goddy Uche, Professor Maxwell Gidado; PDP’s National Legal Adviser A.K. Ajibade; O.M. Atoyebi; Nella Rabana; Paul Ogbole; Nuremi Jimoh and Abdul Ibrahim.

It was reported that Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, have refused to concede defeat in the February 25 presidential election, vowing to recover their mandate in court.

The two candidates rebuffed the gesture of conciliation made by the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, who in his acceptance speech after he was declared the winner of the poll on Wednesday, asked them to support him in the task of building the nation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Tinubu as the President-elect after the 70-year-old polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rivals, Atiku and Obi who scored 6,984,520 and 6,101, votes, respectively.

It was also reported that both Atiku and Obi respectively approached to Presidential Election Court to seek permission for the inspection of election materials used during the presidential’s poll.

With the move, the Court of Appeal in Abuja last Friday granted leave to Atiku and Obi to have access to all the sensitive materials used for the conduct of the election.

A panel of the appellate court led by Justice Joseph Ikyegh made the order after it heard two separate ex parte applications the two aggrieved presidential candidates filed alongside their political parties.

Listed as respondents in the matter were INEC, All Progressives Congress, and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, who was declared the winner of the election and is now the President-elect.

Both applications were predicated on Section 146 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Paragraph 47 (1, 2 &3) of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act of 2022, as well as under the inherent jurisdiction of the court as referenced by Section 6 (6) A & B of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Buhari commends Osinbajo for ‘sterling service’ at 66

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday, commended his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for a sterling service to the nation, as he turns 66.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said the celebrant has served the country “as an academic, Attorney-General of Lagos State (1997-2007), and Vice President (2015 till date)”.

The statement is titled ‘President Buhari celebrates VP Osinbajo at 66.’It reads “President Buhari rejoices with Vice President Oluyemi Osinbajo, GCON, SAN on the occasion of his 66th birthday, March 8, 2023.

“The President equally felicitates with the entire Osinbajo family, wishing them many happy returns, as their son, husband and father turns another year, in good health and sound mind.

“President Buhari lauds the sterling service the celebrant has provided to the country, as an academic, Attorney-General of Lagos State (1997-2007), and Vice President (2015 till date).”

Buhari also applauded the way Osinbajo, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has combined scholarship with governance, and pastoral work, commending such “dedication to the younger generation whom the Number 2 man serves as a torchbearer to”.

Therefore, he wished the Vice President and his family a joyful celebration, and greater grace ahead.

I’m not in Senate to rubber-stamp or to collect allowance- Senator-elect Oshiomhole

Senator-elect Adams Oshiomhole says his focus in the Senate will not be on collecting allowances and rubber-stamping but on providing legislation that benefits Nigerians.

“We are not there for the allowance. There are a couple of things that can be done differently so that the renewed hope of our party can be translated into reality,” he stressed.

Mr Oshiomhole, representing the Edo North senatorial district, stated this while speaking with journalists at the presentation of the certificate of return to senators-elect in Abuja on Tuesday.

The former Edo governor and APC national chair said he had been the people’s voice as a textile union activist and NLC president.

“I will be part of the Senate that legislates for the good people of our countrymen, not for the powerful, by making sure that what we do in appropriation will be such that Nigerians get value for money,” Mr Oshimhole explained.

“It is expected that the executive is powerful but does not have absolute power, so it will not be subject to legislative check.”

Mr Oshiomhole mentioned that President-elect Bola Tinubu would not “look forward to a rubber-stamp assembly but the one that can help to contribute to knowledge.”

The Edo ex-governor also said the 10th Senate would work for economic growth and robust GDP relying on power reforms, pointing out that the current problem “we face in the power sector was because it was meant to favour friends and relatives, who know nothing about power.”

He explained that “now we have to find the courage to deal with a system that makes citizens pay bills for power they did not consume, which for me is fraud.”

“Government must protect its citizens, and customers must be protected. Otherwise, all the energy spent to vote for a few guys to enjoy does not worth my while,” stated the senator-elect.

“There are a couple of things we have to do differently.”Mr Oshiomole said the 10th Senate would also look into the issue of petroleum products.

“We still see long queues, and each time I see the queues, I feel agitated because I fought against these obnoxious policies when I was the president of NLC. We must take radical action to ensure that the petrol we consume is refined in Nigeria,” he explained.

“I will not go to the Senate to lament but make laws that would be enforced.”

INEC removes Doguwa’s name from Reps-elect list

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the name of the embattled leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, from the list of election winners.

It was reported that Doguwa was arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing of several persons and burning of the Secretariat of New Nigeria People’s Party in the just concluded general election.

He was granted bail on Monday, March 7.

Recall that after the election, the returning officer, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, had announced Doguwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election after he polled 39,732 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yushau Salisu Abdullahi of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) who polled 34,798 votes.

In a list of elected lawmakers published on its verified Twitter page, Doguwa’s name was removed.

It was alleged that Doguwa was announced the winner by the collation officer under duress.

Buhari’s regime promise to use digital tools for 2023 census

President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime has promised that the 2023 census will be successfully conducted using digital tools for the exercise.

Specifically, finance minister Zainab Ahmed said the 2023 population and housing census would involve digital maps, questionnaires and cloud computing.

She said this on Monday at a meeting between high-level partners aimed to seek support for the conduct of the 2023 census in Abuja.

Ms Ahmed explained that the count method would ensure compliance with the global climate change campaign for reducing emissions by 30 per cent unconditionally and an additional 15 per cent conditionally by 2030.

According to her, it has become imperative and urgent for Nigeria to conduct another census almost two decades on, as clearly spelt out in the National Development Plan 2021 to 2025.

“This month marks 17 years since the last national census was conducted in Nigeria in 2006. By the United Nations standard, PHC ought to be conducted every 10 years,” the regime’s finance minister said.

Ms Ahmed added that there was a need to address the inconsistency in the nation’s census and statistical system, limiting the effectiveness of development initiatives premised on obsolete data.

She stressed that a major challenge over the years was inadequate funds to conduct the census.

“It is worthy to note that 60 per cent of the funding and other requirements for the 2006 census could not have been achieved without the invaluable support of the development partners, corporate bodies and other key stakeholders,” the minister noted.

The Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, said major activities had been successfully completed in preparedness towards the census exercise, revealing that in the demarcation of 773 local government areas into enumeration areas for the census, only Abadam LGA remains to be demarcated, and hybrid enumeration strategy is being deployed for its demarcation.

Mr Agba said the Buhari regime had set up a census call centre and situation room, conducted a trial post-enumeration survey and convened a stakeholder’s conference at the national and state levels.

I’m happy to sacrifice my political career for Tinubu’s presidency- Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo has said he was glad to sacrifice his political career for the emergence of Bola Tinubu as president-elect of the country.

Mr Makinde added that he was not bothered, even, if he had to sacrifice his career for the country to be restructured for fairness and equity.

“I am glad to be part of those who have made efforts to redraw the electoral map of Nigeria.

“If I have to choose between my political career and doing what is right, just and equitable, I will choose to forgo my political career,” he said on Sunday during an interview on a radio station in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

Mr Makinde, who would be contesting for a second term in office this weekend, had supported Mr Tinubu for the presidency at the last minute.

Mr Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner of the February 25 poll after defeating his main challengers, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

A member of the PDP, Mr Makinde worked against Mr Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate, in the February 25 presidential election.

Mr Makinde was one of the G-5 governors which included; Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), who failed to declare open support for Mr Abubakar.

Before the election, the aggrieved governors resolved not to work for Mr Abubakar’s presidential bid unless the PDP national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, a northerner, was replaced by a southerner for geo-political balancing of power.

After weeks of actively plotting against Mr Abubakar through his alignment with Mr Wike and other members of the so-called G-5, Mr Makinde suddenly sent out a statement on the eve of the election that said voters should back members of the PDP, but without mentioning the party’s presidential flagbearer.

“So, if you still have any undecided voters on your list, this is the time to call them up and help them decide to vote for the PDP from top to bottom in Oyo State,” Mr Makinde said.

Party loyalists, however, dismissed his appeal as insincere, with many of them now saying they would work against his second term from within the party as a payback for his alleged betrayal that contributed to Mr Abubakar’s shortcomings at the February 25 presidential election.

In an interview with Channels TV, the president of the association, Yakubu Maikyau, scored the commission 80 percent for its handling of the election.

“I will say that the elections went well. Those who came out were happy to express their franchise. There were challenges, definitely.
