Katsina NNPP sacks deputy governorship candidate, state chairman for endorsing APC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Katsina State has sacked its deputy gubernatorial candidate, Muttaqa Rabe-Darma, the state party chairman, Sani Liti, and other top executives.

The partyโ€™s spokesman Nasiru Usman-Kankia, disclosed this while briefing reporters on the decision of the party on Friday in Katsina.

He said they were sacked for anti-party activities, including Thursdayโ€™s endorsement of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Dr Dikko Radda.

โ€œAs you are already aware, a section of the state executive leadership of the party convened an unauthorised meeting on Thursday, March 9, the decision of which almost rocked the party.

โ€œAn emergency exco meeting comprising 19 out of 29 members was conveyed to discuss the immediate and remote causes of the illegal meeting.

โ€œFacts have emerged that the illegal meeting was unconstitutionally convened without the consent of the state executive committee.

โ€œIt was also discovered that even when invitations were sent for the illegal meeting to state and local government exco members and ward chairmen, they were informed that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss and disburse funds for the settlement of polling unit agents and ward coordinators.

โ€œHowever, at the illegal meeting, the APC gubernatorial candidate was ushered in and the NNPP state chairman, Liti, the partyโ€™s gubernatorial running mate, Rabe-Darma, and other top executives introduced other members present as decampees to the APC.

โ€œAlmost immediately, the entire arena turned chaotic with shouts of NNPP slogans and chants of no, no, no, by the partyโ€™s loyalists,โ€ Mr Usman-Kankia narrated.

According to him, the APC candidate, Mr Radda, then immediately stated that what he discussed with the NNPP members was on alliance not defection.

The NNPP spokesman recalled that the party had on March 5, warned its members, officials, and candidates against forming an alliance with any political party.

โ€œAccordingly, party officers, members and candidates at all levels are not authorised to discuss, negotiate or form any alliance with any political party for the purpose of winning the upcoming gubernatorial and legislative polls.

โ€œAnyone who endorses a candidate of another political party will be sanctioned in line with the NNPP Constitution, ranging from suspension to expulsion.

โ€œOur emergency meeting considered and decided to expel the officials and members involved in the illegal meeting, subject to approval of the national executive committee of the party.

โ€œThey are Alhaji Sani Liti, state Chairman, Umar Jibril, state Secretary, Mustapha Basheer, youth leader, Dauda Kurfi, Katsina zonal Chairman, Abdulhadi Mai-Dawa, Funtua Zonal Chairman, Dr Sale Mashi, Daura zonal Chairman, Rabe-Darma deputy gubernatorial candidate and Sen. Audu Yandoma,โ€ Mr Usman-Kankia listed.

Bola Tinubu as President-elect stand, anyone who is aggrieved should proceed to court – President Buhari

President Buhari has said that the declaration of APC Presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu as President-elect stands and that anyone who is aggrieved with the outcome of the February 25, 2023 Presidential election, should proceed to the court, if they have the locus to do so.ย

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement issued on Thursday, March 9, ย titled โ€œAt the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, LDCs”, disclosed that President Buhari is against any plans to annul the elections which many have said was characterized by irregularities.ย

According to Garba, President Buhari has said that he will not allow June 12, 1993, saga to repeat itself.

He pointed out that before the President’s trip to Doha for the UN Conference, there were calls for the cancellation of the elections but that he had always maintained that the outcome of the election will be accepted by his government and must stand.ย

โ€œIn addition to other things, this trip, more than any other, speaks to the courage, political stamina and statesmanship with which the President has managed the affairs of the nation.

Before the trip, he was faced with orchestrated attempts to poison public opinion against national institutions, particularly the presidential election and its conduct by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as an institution, against which vile and unsubstantiated allegations were hurled.

The clear intent of this was creating an atmosphere of fear, polarising the public and demonising the administration of the President.

The wishful thinkers appeared to assume that the June 12, 1993, election crisis, the worst ever since the civil war could be recreated.

Those who sought to do this forgot what the President said at the palace of the Gbong-Gwon Jos, when he went to the city to inaugurate the Tinubu-Shettima campaign: ย โ€œthis election will not be annulled; whoever is the winner will be president.

President Buhari not only muted himself, following the cacophony, he picked up international travel: Bola Tinubuโ€™s election stands. If you are aggrieved, go to court.”

New Nigeria will rise from Lagos โ€” Labour Party Governorship candidate

The Lagos State Labour Party governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, says Nigerian youths are 90 per cent close to taking over governance and having their dream country materialise.

The 40-year-old LP candidate disclosed this at a meeting tagged, โ€œYouth Oโ€™ Clockโ€ in Ikeja on Thursday, where he said new Lagos would birth new Nigeria.

He said;

โ€œWe know that the goal and what we are going through is far bigger than I and any of us.

โ€œIt is a project that will lift the lives of millions of Lagosians up and in turn lift the lives of many Nigerians up. It is a project to free Lagos from the shackle hold of tyranny.

โ€œA Lagos State where the inner roads will work, where our people will have quality healthcare, water, quality public education, not one where parents keep struggling trying to find how to pay school fees for their children to go to private school.โ€Rhodes-Vivour assured of a very bright future.

โ€œWe are already 90 per cent there. We need to bring this thing home. I want you to understand that the moment we take Lagos, this fire of a new type of politics will engulf Nigeria.

โ€œYou start to find politicians that mean well for the people, that can articulate their vision and positive about change.

โ€œNo more status quo, we are changing the narrative to have a new Lagos and a new Nigeria. We will set a new standard,โ€ Rhodes-Vivour said.

Hailing Nigerian youths for voting the LPโ€™s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi and his running mate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed in the February 25 presidential election, he said Obi and the LP were all about empathy and compassion on the suffering of the people.

Kano APC Governorship Candidate Meets Buhari In Katsina

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, on Thursday, met with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), in Daura, Katsina State.

This comes hours after the Independent National Electoral Commission postponed the governorship and state houses of assembly elections earlier scheduled for Saturday to March 18, 2023.

Buhari returned to Nigeria on Wednesday after a four-day trip to Doha, Qatar, where he participated in the fifth United Nations Conference.

LP Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun has claims BVAS was โ€œpervertedโ€

Director General of the LP Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun has claimed that the Bimordal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was โ€œpervertedโ€ during the presidential and National Assembly elections.ย ย

Appearing for an interview on Channels Television, Osuntokun said Labour Party is compiling its results of the exercise.ย

He also claimed that the party won some states by wider margins.ย

He said โ€œBVAS has been perverted. Something that is to serve a good course has now been perverted. Because once the BVAS does its role โ€“ takes a picture of the results โ€“ the polling agents will have it.

โ€œSo, the polling agents have all the results and we have our own that is presently being compiled.

โ€œIt has been said before โ€“ about nine opinion polls โ€“ prior to the election said Obi was going to win.

โ€œINEC has another opportunity on Saturday [governorship and state house of assembly elections] to redeem itself.โ€

Osuntokun also said that the presidential and National Assembly elections should be a source of worry for President Muhammadu Buhari who promised to leave a credible exercise.ย

He added;ย ย

โ€œHe wants Nigerians to remember him for the best election ever conducted. But look at the absurdity of what has happened! Is this the legacy he wants to bequeath?โ€

Afenifere knocks INEC, says commission disobeys electoral guidelines

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has condemned the outcome of the February 25, 2023 Presidential Election, won by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.

The group also faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission on the conduct of the election, saying the commission did not comply with electoral guidelines.

This was contained in a communique issued after the general meeting of the group.

The communique was made available to our correspondent by the Secretary General of the association, Mr Sola Ebiseni, in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday.

According to the group, the alleged non-compliance with the electoral guidelines by the INEC caused a series of malpractices during the last general election.

The communique read in part;

The deliberate non-compliance by the Commission with these mandatory guidelines encouraged electoral brigandage at the polling units which included the destruction of ballot papers, snatching of ballot boxes, doctoring of figures and swapping of votes of candidates at the coalition centres by amended and outlawed manual procedures which rendered the 25th February 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections flawed in several respects as confirmed by local and international observers.

โ€œThe results of the lawful votes at the election available to the Afenifere through credible sources confirm that His Excellency Peter Gregory Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party won the said election and we thus support his decision challenging the contrary Declaration by the INEC.โ€

The group, which declared that the Labour Partโ€™s candidate, Mr Peter Obi won the presidential election, โ€œdenounced in strong terms and dissociated Afenifere from any congratulatory message in the name of the Organisation or howsoever to any candidate as illegally declared by the INEC.โ€

Afenifere reiterates that for equity, fairness, national cohesion and peaceful corporate existence, the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be a person of its Southern part and specifically the South-East,โ€ the statement added.

The group called on Nigerians to troop out en masse and participate fully in the governorship and houses of assembly elections coming up on Saturday, March 11, 2023.

Earlier, the leader of the group worldwide, Pa Reuben Fasoranti in a congratulatory letter to the President-Elect, Tinubu over his victory in the last presidential election.

In the letter, Fasoranti advised the President-Elect to avoid the mistakes of his predecessors.

The letter read in part;

โ€œYou now have the opportunity. Now is the time for you to prove me right. I pray to God to be with you.

โ€œIn going about this, avoid the mistake of some of your forbears. Be fair to all concerned. Go ahead to unite the country, see and treat the country as one.

โ€œBe a federalist. Allow the big ethnic groups to exist and respect one another, but also allow the small ones to feel proud and wanted in the spirit of federalism as practised in the USA.โ€

Senior Nigerian lawyer Pius Akubo rejects appointment to Tinubuโ€™s legal team

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Pius Akubo has rejected the appointment to be part of President-elect Bola Tinubuโ€™s legal team expected to defend his controversial win in the February 25 presidential election.

Mr Akubo said he was unaware of the appointment, and there had been no official communication between himself and Mr Tinubuโ€™s camp.

โ€œIn the last twenty-four (24) hours or so, the social media space has been agog with a trending unsigned letter in respect of appointment of Presidential Election Petition Legal Team by All Progressives Congress (APC) wherein my name is listed as number 10,โ€ said the senior lawyer in a statement.

Mr Akubo added;

โ€œWith all due respect, I wish to state that I had no prior knowledge of the said appointment. As a matter of fact, I have not received any official communication on the subject matter hitherto. Suffice it to say that I was taken by surprise to hear of the said appointment vide social media.โ€

Mr Akubo pointed out that he could not defend the former Lagos governor for personal reasons even if such contemplations were being made. โ€œIn the circumstance and for personal reasons, I hereby decline the said appointment,โ€ he added.

The Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party are seeking to contest Mr Tinubuโ€™s victory. With the PDP and Labour claiming victory in the election, the country is set to witness a consequential legal dispute that could last for several months.

Lagos youths are my children, Iโ€™ve provided jobs for them on construction sites- Babajide Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos says youth in the state are his โ€œchildrenโ€ and his administration in the past four years has provided them jobs on construction sites.

Mr Sanwo-Olu made this statement when asked about his plans for youths who are critical of his administration in an interview with Arise TV on Wednesday.

โ€œThey are my children. They are my bosses in some space. Because I identify with all of them at various levels. You know, it is a large number and there is no way I can satisfy every single person,โ€ Mr Sanwo-Olu said.

โ€œIf I do a road construction, it is not for me. It is about the number of youths that are working as supervisors, as labourers, as engineers, on that site. So it has a ripple effect.โ€

Speaking further, Mr Sanwo-Olu said his government is providing enabling environment for youths to thrive and focused on how to get people out of unemployment and poverty.

โ€œAnother area which they (youth) want is technology for example, we are the only state in the country providing enabling environment for them.

โ€œIn less than two years, we have seen international organisations coming into Lagos to make foreign direct investments โ€“ runs into billions. In fact, Lagos has become the tech start-up hub in Africa and it is because of the economy we have provided for them,โ€ said Mr Sanwo-Olu.

The Lagos governor is fighting for re-election in the governorship election scheduled for Saturday.

Mr Sanwo-Oluโ€™s major challenger, Gbadebo Rhodes Viviour of the Labour Party, has garnered more support going by February 25 presidential election in which Peter Obi polled 582,454, defeating the All Progressive Congress presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, who polled 572, 606 votes in Lagos.

INEC shifts governorship, state assembly elections to March 18

The Independent National Electoral Commission has postponed the governorship and state assembly elections till March 18.

The exercise was previously scheduled to hold on March 11, but INEC, citing a logistics crisis stemming from BVAS configuration and transportation, said the election could not hold again as scheduled following a meeting of its executives on Wednesday evening.

โ€œThe elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations,โ€ an official familiar with the meeting told Peoples Gazette by telephone on Wednesday night.

โ€œWe should be able to get everything in order before March 18.โ€

The meeting was still underway at INEC headquarters in Abuja as of the time of filing this report.

The commission had convinced the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal to vary its order granting Peter Obi of the Labour Party and PDPโ€™s Atiku Abubakar permission to inspect the election materials on the premise that it had to reconfigure the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) for the conduction of the polls this Saturday.

UAE ignores Buhariโ€™s plea, maintains indefinite visa ban on Nigerians

The United Arab Emirates has disregarded the pleas of President Muhammadu Buhari to lift a visa ban slammed on Nigerian nationals since October 2022. The ban, however, does not affect persons holding diplomatic passports.

Last month, Mr Buhari had appealed to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayad Al Nahyan, the UAE president, to remove the visa ban on his country people in a telephone conversation whose content was relayed by his media aide, Garba Shehu.

The Nigerian leader, via the phone, disclosed that he had given instructions to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to increase the amount of foreign exchange allocated to the Emirates Airlines, the bane of the now-resolved months-long diplomatic row between the two nations and as a show of goodwill towards the Arab nation.

Since the phone conversation took place nearly a month ago and with Mr Buhariโ€™s presidency ending in June, the UAE appears uninterested in his offer and has remained silent on the matter.

Instead, the Emirati government has maintained the travel restrictions on Nigerians and other Africans whom it has accused of constituting unrest in its territory through cultism and other illegal activities.

It remains unclear whether Mr Buhari will continue to persuade the Sheikh to remove the ban before his presidency expires or whether he will leave the incoming president, Bola Tinubu, to shoulder that responsibility.

Atiku employs 19 SANs to challenge Tinubuโ€™s victory

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, has put together a legal team of 19 Senior Advocates of Nigeria to challenge the outcome of the February 25 election.

Atiku briefed them on Wednesday at his campaign Headquarters in Abuja, asking them to โ€œestablish the claim of illegality in the election and reclaim the mandate of the Nigerian people.โ€

The team is headed by a seasoned litigation and commercial lawyer, JK Gadzama.

He further declared that it is crucial for them to go through this process not just for himself and PDP, but also to reinforce constitutional democracy and safeguard it for future generations.

The list of SANs includes Chief Chris Uche, Paul Usoro, Tayo Jegede, Ken Mozia, Chief Mike Ozekhome, Mahmood Magaji, Joe Abraham, Chukwuma Umeh, Garba Tetengi and Chief Emeka Etiaba โ€“ as well as Chief Goddy Uche, Professor Maxwell Gidado; PDPโ€™s National Legal Adviser A.K. Ajibade; O.M. Atoyebi; Nella Rabana; Paul Ogbole; Nuremi Jimoh and Abdul Ibrahim.

It was reported that Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, have refused to concede defeat in the February 25 presidential election, vowing to recover their mandate in court.

The two candidates rebuffed the gesture of conciliation made by the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, who in his acceptance speech after he was declared the winner of the poll on Wednesday, asked them to support him in the task of building the nation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Tinubu as the President-elect after the 70-year-old polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat his closest rivals, Atiku and Obi who scored 6,984,520 and 6,101, votes, respectively.

It was also reported that both Atiku and Obi respectively approached to Presidential Election Court to seek permission for the inspection of election materials used during the presidentialโ€™s poll.

With the move, the Court of Appeal in Abuja last Friday granted leave to Atiku and Obi to have access to all the sensitive materials used for the conduct of the election.

A panel of the appellate court led by Justice Joseph Ikyegh made the order after it heard two separate ex parte applications the two aggrieved presidential candidates filed alongside their political parties.

Listed as respondents in the matter were INEC, All Progressives Congress, and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, who was declared the winner of the election and is now the President-elect.

Both applications were predicated on Section 146 (1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Paragraph 47 (1, 2 &3) of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act of 2022, as well as under the inherent jurisdiction of the court as referenced by Section 6 (6) A & B of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Buhari commends Osinbajo for โ€˜sterling serviceโ€™ at 66

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday, commended his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, for a sterling service to the nation, as he turns 66.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said the celebrant has served the country โ€œas an academic, Attorney-General of Lagos State (1997-2007), and Vice President (2015 till date)โ€.

The statement is titled โ€˜President Buhari celebrates VP Osinbajo at 66.โ€™It reads โ€œPresident Buhari rejoices with Vice President Oluyemi Osinbajo, GCON, SAN on the occasion of his 66th birthday, March 8, 2023.

โ€œThe President equally felicitates with the entire Osinbajo family, wishing them many happy returns, as their son, husband and father turns another year, in good health and sound mind.

โ€œPresident Buhari lauds the sterling service the celebrant has provided to the country, as an academic, Attorney-General of Lagos State (1997-2007), and Vice President (2015 till date).โ€

Buhari also applauded the way Osinbajo, a pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has combined scholarship with governance, and pastoral work, commending such โ€œdedication to the younger generation whom the Number 2 man serves as a torchbearer toโ€.

Therefore, he wished the Vice President and his family a joyful celebration, and greater grace ahead.

Iโ€™m not in Senate to rubber-stamp or to collect allowance- Senator-elect Oshiomhole

Senator-elect Adams Oshiomhole says his focus in the Senate will not be on collecting allowances and rubber-stamping but on providing legislation that benefits Nigerians.

โ€œWe are not there for the allowance. There are a couple of things that can be done differently so that the renewed hope of our party can be translated into reality,โ€ he stressed.

Mr Oshiomhole, representing the Edo North senatorial district, stated this while speaking with journalists at the presentation of the certificate of return to senators-elect in Abuja on Tuesday.

The former Edo governor and APC national chair said he had been the peopleโ€™s voice as a textile union activist and NLC president.

โ€œI will be part of the Senate that legislates for the good people of our countrymen, not for the powerful, by making sure that what we do in appropriation will be such that Nigerians get value for money,โ€ Mr Oshimhole explained.

โ€œIt is expected that the executive is powerful but does not have absolute power, so it will not be subject to legislative check.โ€

Mr Oshiomhole mentioned that President-elect Bola Tinubu would not โ€œlook forward to a rubber-stamp assembly but the one that can help to contribute to knowledge.โ€

The Edo ex-governor also said the 10th Senate would work for economic growth and robust GDP relying on power reforms, pointing out that the current problem โ€œwe face in the power sector was because it was meant to favour friends and relatives, who know nothing about power.โ€

He explained that โ€œnow we have to find the courage to deal with a system that makes citizens pay bills for power they did not consume, which for me is fraud.โ€

โ€œGovernment must protect its citizens, and customers must be protected. Otherwise, all the energy spent to vote for a few guys to enjoy does not worth my while,โ€ stated the senator-elect.

โ€œThere are a couple of things we have to do differently.โ€Mr Oshiomole said the 10th Senate would also look into the issue of petroleum products.

โ€œWe still see long queues, and each time I see the queues, I feel agitated because I fought against these obnoxious policies when I was the president of NLC. We must take radical action to ensure that the petrol we consume is refined in Nigeria,โ€ he explained.

โ€œI will not go to the Senate to lament but make laws that would be enforced.โ€

Donโ€™t accompany VIPs on election day – Gombe CP warns escorts

Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Oqua Etim, has warned all aides and escorts of top personalities to refrain from accompanying their principals and other politicians to their polling booth.

Etim who gave out the warning ahead of the forthcoming governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state, said violation of the directive will attract stringent disciplinary measures from the command.

He said;

โ€œThe idea is to ensure all citizens freely participate in the electoral process devoid of intimidation, harassment or fear. So, all VIP security aides must refrain from accompanying their principals on Election Day.

โ€œThe command wishes to once again enjoin all eligible electorates to be law-abiding and turn out to exercise their franchise.โ€

Etim added that vigilante and hunter groups are not exempted from the order.

He said;

โ€œThose affected in the warning are quasi security outfits such as vigilante groups, hunters, security outfits, and any other voluntary organisation, without legal backing should not form part of the exercise, as such anyone found in uniform flouting this directive will be arrested and arraigned before the court during the forthcoming elections.โ€

INEC removes Doguwaโ€™s name from Reps-elect list

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has removed the name of the embattled leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, from the list of election winners.

It was reported that Doguwa was arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing of several persons and burning of the Secretariat of New Nigeria Peopleโ€™s Party in the just concluded general election.

He was granted bail on Monday, March 7.

Recall that after the election, the returning officer, Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai, had announced Doguwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election after he polled 39,732 votes to defeat his closest rival, Yushau Salisu Abdullahi of the New Nigeria Peopleโ€™s Party (NNPP) who polled 34,798 votes.

In a list of elected lawmakers published on its verified Twitter page, Doguwaโ€™s name was removed.

It was alleged that Doguwa was announced the winner by the collation officer under duress.

According to INEC, Tinubu got 8,794,726 votes in 12 of Nigeriaโ€™s 36 states, PDP’s Atiku Abubakar got 6,984,520 votes, and the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, got 6,101,533 voted.

Atiku and Obi have rejected the outcome of the election, vowing to challenge the result in court.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 7, APC said it is willing to meet the parties in court.

The partyโ€™s National Legal Adviser, Ahmad Usman El-Marzuq, released the 13-man list comprising 12 senior advocates.

“The All Progressives Congress (APC) has appointed a team of highly qualified and experienced lawyers to represent the Party at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal,” the statement read.

It continued:

“We urge members of the party to support the team in its effort to defend the will and mandate of the people.

“We also call on all parties involved to conduct themselves with utmost professionalism and respect for the rule of law throughout the legal process.”

Buhari’s regime promise to use digital tools for 2023 census

President Muhammadu Buhariโ€™s regime has promised that the 2023 census will be successfully conducted using digital tools for the exercise.

Specifically, finance minister Zainab Ahmed said the 2023 population and housing census would involve digital maps, questionnaires and cloud computing.

She said this on Monday at a meeting between high-level partners aimed to seek support for the conduct of the 2023 census in Abuja.

Ms Ahmed explained that the count method would ensure compliance with the global climate change campaign for reducing emissions by 30 per cent unconditionally and an additional 15 per cent conditionally by 2030.

According to her, it has become imperative and urgent for Nigeria to conduct another census almost two decades on, as clearly spelt out in the National Development Plan 2021 to 2025.

โ€œThis month marks 17 years since the last national census was conducted in Nigeria in 2006. By the United Nations standard, PHC ought to be conducted every 10 years,โ€ the regimeโ€™s finance minister said.

Ms Ahmed added that there was a need to address the inconsistency in the nationโ€™s census and statistical system, limiting the effectiveness of development initiatives premised on obsolete data.

She stressed that a major challenge over the years was inadequate funds to conduct the census.

โ€œIt is worthy to note that 60 per cent of the funding and other requirements for the 2006 census could not have been achieved without the invaluable support of the development partners, corporate bodies and other key stakeholders,โ€ the minister noted.

The Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Clem Agba, said major activities had been successfully completed in preparedness towards the census exercise, revealing that in the demarcation of 773 local government areas into enumeration areas for the census, only Abadam LGA remains to be demarcated, and hybrid enumeration strategy is being deployed for its demarcation.

Mr Agba said the Buhari regime had set up a census call centre and situation room, conducted a trial post-enumeration survey and convened a stakeholderโ€™s conference at the national and state levels.

Peter Obi visits lady stabbed while voting in Lagos

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi visited Mrs Jennifer Efedi, the lady who was stabbed while voting in Surulere, Lagos state.

Efedi was dubbed the last presidential and national assembly election hero after coming back to vote despite being stabbed by some thugs at her polling unit.

Here are photos of her and Peter Obi below;

Iโ€™m happy to sacrifice my political career for Tinubuโ€™s presidency- Seyi Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo has said he was glad to sacrifice his political career for the emergence of Bola Tinubu as president-elect of the country.

Mr Makinde added that he was not bothered, even, if he had to sacrifice his career for the country to be restructured for fairness and equity.

โ€œI am glad to be part of those who have made efforts to redraw the electoral map of Nigeria.

โ€œIf I have to choose between my political career and doing what is right, just and equitable, I will choose to forgo my political career,โ€ he said on Sunday during an interview on a radio station in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

Mr Makinde, who would be contesting for a second term in office this weekend, had supported Mr Tinubu for the presidency at the last minute.

Mr Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner of the February 25 poll after defeating his main challengers, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

A member of the PDP, Mr Makinde worked against Mr Abubakar, the partyโ€™s presidential candidate, in the February 25 presidential election.

Mr Makinde was one of the G-5 governors which included; Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), who failed to declare open support for Mr Abubakar.

Before the election, the aggrieved governors resolved not to work for Mr Abubakarโ€™s presidential bid unless the PDP national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, a northerner, was replaced by a southerner for geo-political balancing of power.

After weeks of actively plotting against Mr Abubakar through his alignment with Mr Wike and other members of the so-called G-5, Mr Makinde suddenly sent out a statement on the eve of the election that said voters should back members of the PDP, but without mentioning the partyโ€™s presidential flagbearer.

โ€œSo, if you still have any undecided voters on your list, this is the time to call them up and help them decide to vote for the PDP from top to bottom in Oyo State,โ€ Mr Makinde said.

Party loyalists, however, dismissed his appeal as insincere, with many of them now saying they would work against his second term from within the party as a payback for his alleged betrayal that contributed to Mr Abubakarโ€™s shortcomings at the February 25 presidential election.

Police to arraign five persons for electoral offences in Lagos

The police command in Lagos State says five out of 23 persons arrested during the presidential and parliamentary elections would be arraigned for electoral offences.

The commandโ€™s spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to journalists on Monday.

He said the investigation of the arrested 23 persons revealed that only five have cases to answer in court for allegedly disrupting the electoral process on February 25.

โ€œOut of 23 persons arrested during presidential and parliamentary elections, five of them will be charged to court any moment from now for disrupting the electoral process.

โ€œTheir investigations have been concluded. The rest are just victims of circumstances,โ€ he said.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Idowu Owohunwa, on Monday, assured residents of Lagos that those arrested and culpable for electoral crimes on February 25 would be charged to court this week.

Mr Owohunwa gave the assurance in a stakeholdersโ€™ meeting to review the security of the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Some stakeholders have demanded the immediate prosecution of electoral offenders to serve as a deterrent to others in coming elections.
