Erdogan wins Turkey’s presidential election, extends rule to third decade

Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan won re-election on Sunday, May 28, extending his rule into a third decade in a country reeling from high inflation and the aftermath of an earthquake that levelled entire cities.

Erdogan prevailed by winning more than 52% of the vote in Sunday’s presidential runoff, which came two weeks after he fell short of scoring an outright victory in the first round.

A majority of Turkish voters in the second round chose him over challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu, showing their support for a man who they see as a strong, proven leader.

Following the results, Erdogan thanked the nation for giving him another five years, saying:

“We hope to be worthy of your trust, as we have been for 21 years.” He further ridiculed his opponent, saying ‘Bye Bye Bye Kemal’, adding, “The only winner today is Turkey.”

The result led to Erdogan supporters honking their cars, cheering and gathering in public squares with the leader booming out: “It is not only us who won, it is Turkey. “It is our nation that won with all its elements. It is our democracy.”

Many analysts are shocked at Erdogan’s victory; he’s managed to win the elections despite the country’s inflation running at 50 per cent.

There has been anger over the government’s response to the powerful earthquakes in February that left at least 50,000 people dead.

Some analysts have said that another five years of Erdogan would mean a more assertive and authoritative rule from the leader.

Erdogan has been in power since 2003, first as prime minister and then since 2014 he has been president of Turkey.

In his years of rule, he has consolidated his power through constitutional changes, eroded the country’s democratic institutions, including the judiciary and media, and jailed many opponents.

He has crushed anti-government protests and evaded a corruption investigation into his inner circle. Such has been his crackdown that in its World Report 2022, Human Rights Watch said Erdogan’s AK party (AKP) has set back Turkey’s human rights record by decades. Sweden’s V-Dem Institute has designed the country as one of the world’s top 10 autrocratising countries and in 2018, Freedom House had downgraded the country’s status from “partly free” to “not free.”

It is also believed that Erdogan may push for a stronger Islamic influence in the nation. Before he became president, Turkey was staunchly secular, so much so that the wearing of headscarves by women was banned in many official venues. But he has steadily pushed the nation into a more religious sphere.

His government may come under pressure from these parties to pursue more Islamist policies. In his regime, he has expanded religious education and transformed the Hagia Sophia, Turkey’s most famous historic landmark, from a museum into a mosque.

Belarus president Lukashenko offers nuclear weapons to nations willing ‘to join the Union State of Russia and Belarus

Belarus President, Alexander Lukashenko has claimed that nations who are willing “to join the Union State of Russia and Belarus” will be given nuclear weapons, days after the dictator confirmed the transfer of some tactical nuclear weapons from Moscow to Minsk.

Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, made the comments in an on-camera interview released Sunday, May 28 on the state-run Russia 1 channel.

During the interview, Lukashenko said, “no one minds Kazakhstan and other countries having the same close relations that we have with the Russian Federation.”

“It’s very simple,” he added. “Join the Union State of Belarus and Russia. That’s all: there will be nuclear weapons for everyone.”

Signed in 1999, the Agreement on Establishment of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Treaty is an agreement that gives wide-ranging cooperation on economy, information, technology, agriculture, and border security among other things between the two countries, according to the Belarus government website.

Lukashenko’s comments on handing out nuclear weapons to like-minded allies are likely to heighten concerns as Moscow threatens the world with its own atomic arsenal as its war against Ukraine continues to drag on.

On Thursday last week the Belarusian dictator said the transfer of some tactical nuclear weapons from Russia to Belarus had begun, following an agreement signed by Moscow and Minsk.

“It was necessary to prepare storage sites, and so on. We did all this. Therefore, the movement of nuclear weapons began,” Lukashenko said, according to state news agency Belta.

He also promised the safety of those weapons, saying: “This is not even up for discussion. Don’t worry about nuclear weapons. We are responsible for this. These are serious issues. Everything will be alright here.”

Putin has said that Russia would retain control over any tactical nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus and likened the move to Washington’s practice of stationing nuclear weapons in Europe to keep host countries, like Germany, from breaking their commitments as non-nuclear powers.

Belarus has had no nuclear weapons on its territory since the early 1990s. Shortly after gaining independence following the collapse of the Soviet Union, it agreed to transfer all Soviet-era weapons of mass destruction stationed there to Russia.

There will be efforts to taint my hard-earned image, but Nigerians must remain peaceful and law abiding – Peter Obi

Ahead of the inauguration of Bola Tinubu as the 16th President of Nigeria, Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who is challenging the All Progressives Congress candidate’s victory in the presidential poll in court, has again appealed to Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

In the lengthy statement he released today, Obi noted that Nigeria remains our only patrimony and it is a patrimony we must protect, rather than violate.

He also that while there are efforts to taint his hard-earned image, he expects that the Nigerian judiciary will use the election cases to reaffirm its independence and integrity.

The statement reads;

“For all Nigerians, this is a time for deep reflection. It is also a time to re-examine our assumptions, even as we reaffirm our hopes. Let us calmly review our aspirations, in order to recalibrate our expectations and pin down the causes of our missed opportunities and disappointments. We stand at that critical moment in time when, as a people, we must collectively come to grips with the reality of our injured destiny as well as the reasons for that injury.

“It is for us to reassess our plight as a young democracy and identify clear pathways to a better and greater future for us all. As we await the verdict of the election tribunal, I urge all Nigerians to use this opportunity to renew their commitment to the Nigerian ideal. That ideal remains noble and worth every sacrifice we can make.

“Nigeria remains our only patrimony and it is a patrimony we must protect, rather than violate. We have no other nation but this, so let us remain committed to rescuing and rebuilding it.

“The judiciary is part of the democratic enterprise and a critical governance tool for determining the propriety of the decisions and actions of every citizen and every institution of state. To that extent, and for that reason, I urge everyone to treat it with the respect and dignity it deserves. We expect that the Nigerian judiciary will use the election cases now before it to reaffirm its independence and integrity. It has to do so, for all our sakes and for itself.

“Nigerians must, therefore, remain peaceful and law abiding. No matter the depth of anyone’s reservations about what is going on in the polity today, no matter the real and imagined provocations, and no matter the disagreement out there, we should remember that this will not last forever. I remain committed, and untiring, in my determination to work with like-minded fellow Nigerians to end the curse of missed opportunities and squandered hope that has become our lot here.

“I will never shrink from that original commitment, because I firmly believe that we must change from the present politics of criminality, and corruption, in order to make a new Nigeria possible. I call on fellow Nigerians, especially the youths to remain steadfast, calm, patient, and peaceful. Our journey may be long and difficult but it is worth it in every way. Victory is assured.

“We have to work together to move our beautiful country from corruption and criminality to a center of productivity rather than aimless consumption. I am aware of some evil designs being hatched against me and my supporters in the coming months. Efforts will be made to taint my image. Campaigns of calumny are being perfected to defame my character and diminish my hard-earned integrity.

“These schemes will aim at degrading our support base and confusing the public. But, no evil campaign will alter the substance of my character; nor diminish my patriotic commitment to a better Nigeria. It is about the future of our youths. it is about ending the Years of Locust. In all of this, I thank Nigerians, our great party (LP) and the media. The latter, as the Fourth Estate of the realm, has remained a trusted ally.

“This Estate must continue to guide our people on the immense promise of a future in a new Nigeria. God bless Nigeria and protect the troops keeping us safe in this season of vaulting insecurity. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. -PO”

Osinbajo, Remi Tinubu, Others Attend Presidential Inauguration Church Service

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, and his wife, Dolapo, Oluremi, wife of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, attended the presidential inauguration interdenominational church service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja on Sunday.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Senator-elect Godswill Akpabio, and other dignitaries attended the service.

The service is one of the events scheduled for the Monday, May 29, inauguration ceremony of Tinubu and Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima.

I will never call Tinubu my President – Pastor Bakare

The Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said that he will never call the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, his president.

The clergyman said this during a webinar on Saturday, May 27, after delivering his speech on the Zoom programme titled, ‘Building the New Nigeria: The Role of the Diaspora.”

Bakare had said the 2023 elections were below acceptable standards.

When asked if he would be happy to work for the new government as a ‘Minister of Diaspora Engagements,’ the clergyman laughed and spoke about how he addresses President Buhari.

Bakare said he recently told Buhari that sometimes he called him President of Nigeria and other times, he called him “My President.” He however said he would never refer to Tinubu as “My President.”

“Last Wednesday, I was at the Glass House where he (Buhari) has been restricted now because the main house is being renovated. I said I have done that for you.

I want you to know that, because of the circumstances of your flying into power on the wings of integrity and incorruptibility, but you’re now passing onto someone who does not have that value,” the cleric told the participants.

He continued; “at any public lecture anywhere, before this mess is cleared off, I will address Asiwaju as a President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but I will never call him my president.”

He said he didn’t participate in the elections, therefore, no one would say he lost in the exercise. Bakare, who participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary election on June 14, 2022 and polled no vote, said;

“I participated in the primary, and there were hundreds who participated only by stepping down, so there is no shame in what we have done. We spoke truth to power within seven minutes. I wasn’t there when they voted, I wasn’t there when they scored (me) zero, but we won that badge of zero and badge of honour.”

Plateau Gov-elect promises not to witch-hunt anybody

The Governor-elect of Plateau, Mr Caleb Mutfwtang, has said that he would not witch-hunt anybody when he takes over as governor.

The governor-elect stated this on Saturday at Government House, Jos, during a state banquet organised for the incoming administration.

He said that in areas where clarifications were required, he would handle such issues with the affected persons as a ‘family affair‘.

He promised that he would not be negligent on issues that affect the commonwealth of the state and would work towards improving the welfare of the people.

Mr Muftwang said he hoped for a new Plateau that would give a sense of belonging to its people, saying that good leadership was critical to facilitate that.

‘’Those opportuned to serve will be judged based on history,’’ he said.

He called for cooperation from Plateau people in the discharge of his duties and promised to improve areas of need in the state, including public service.

He thanked outgoing Gov. Simon Lalong for his service to the state and wished him well in his future endeavours.

In his remarks, Mr Lalong said that his administration has done its best for the progress of the state and hopes the incoming administration would record more progress.

He said his administration was fulfilled on putting the interest of Plateau first which it demonstrated in continuing with old projects and initiating and completing new ones.

‘’On the issue of peace and security, we did our best in dealing with criminality and also establishing structures and laws to avert ethno-religious conflicts that riddled the State in the past.”

Despite our efforts and substantial progress, the criminals have continued to exhibit desperation for violence as seen in the recent attacks in Mangu,’’ he said.

He hoped that the new administration would work with the citizens to tackle the security challenges and urged the governor-elect to carry all segments of society along in governance.

He restated that ensuring security in Plateau involved embracing different groups in the state, saying ‘no tribe is more superior’.

He urged Mr Muftwang to complete abandoned projects and encourage the establishment of Small Scale Enterprises in the state to attract investors to establish their businesses.

He advised Mr Muftwang to put God first in all his activities and should not be pressured by his associates, party members or religious leaders to work against the progress of the state.

He thanked Plateau people for giving him the opportunity to serve and for supporting him in the discharge of his duties while also urging them to forgive him for his shortcomings.

He said that he would continue to do everything possible to contribute to Plateau’s peace, progress and stability in any engagement he embarks on.

The goodwill messages were presented by traditional rulers, women and elder statesmen during the event.

Federal Government confers Nigerian citizenship on 385 foreigners

The federal government has conferred Nigerian citizenship on 385 foreign nationals from different continents across the world.

The minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made this known at the 1st 2023 Conferment ceremony of Nigeria citizenship by naturalisation and registration on Saturday in Abuja.

The minister said one of the objectives of the present administration was to lay a solid socio-economic and political foundation that would elevate Nigeria into one of the 20 great economies of the world.

He said to achieve this vision, the federal government was determined to encourage and attract foreigners, investors, resourceful individuals and people with rare talents and unbounded energy into the country.

“Today’s conferment ceremony will be granted to 385 foreigners who have gone through diligent checks by the relevant agencies of state as stipulated by the constitution and have fulfilled all statutory and administrative requirements.

“I need to state that the acquisition of Nigerian citizenship is a great privilege and not everyone that applies becomes successful.

“However, that we have a high number of foreigners willing to become Nigerians is an indication that the ongoing efforts to make Nigeria a destination for investment and peaceful coexistence is beginning to yield good fruits.

“As we continue to welcome foreigners to do business here who, after interacting with us, are now desirous of becoming one of us.”

The minister said that it was under the present administration that the largest number of foreigners had been naturalised.

“Between 2011 and 2013, a total of 266 foreigners became Nigerians. In 2017, 335 people took up Nigerian citizenship.

“But last year, 286 foreigners and today at this ceremony, 385, making a total of 671 have acquired Nigerian citizenship.

“I am still not pleased with this figure. In Europe and America, thousands of foreigners are inducted into citizenship every year.

“They do this to attract youths and people in their prime who would like to contribute to the development of their countries.

“The bane of the smooth pathway to Nigerian citizenship however is the constitutional requirement of continuous residency in Nigeria for 15 years.”

This, he said, was a huge disincentive, considering that in the U.S. and most European countries, it is five years.

Mr Aregbesola added that some of these countries have made a habit of snatching young and resourceful brains, who after four years of schooling and working for just one year, through easy pathways, to obtain migration to their countries.

He, therefore, urged the relevant institutions of state to reconsider this in the next effort at amendment to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We ought to have easier pathways to citizenship for foreigners than currently obtains.

“Also, while the foreign wives of Nigerian men can automatically become citizens through registration, this same privilege is not available to foreign husbands of Nigerian women.

“This discrimination has robbed us of the gains we could have gotten from this category of foreigners, if there is a pathway for them through registration, as obtains for their opposite sex.”

According to him, the Interior Ministry has sought and got the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to execute new pathways to permanent residency for eligible foreign nationals.

Mr Aregbesola added that the ministry had been invested with the power to grant permanent residence to foreign nationals who had demonstrated exceptional talents, knowledge and skills in rare fields of Science, Technology and Medicine, among others.

He expressed optimism that such privilege would no doubt attract more people of talent and resources to the nation and give them the confidence and assurance to stay permanently in Nigeria.

The minister, however, congratulated the new Nigerians who have scaled the hurdle to proudly become Nigerians, adding that Nigerians are among the greatest people on the earth and well-revered across the globe.

He assured them that they would not regret the decision they have made to become Nigerians, reminding them, however, that every privilege goes with responsibility.

“You will be required to make the best contribution ever to Nigeria’s development in every area, including the defence of its territorial integrity if need be and promotion of the welfare of the people.”

He, however, welcomed them all to Nigerian citizenship.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, while conferring citizenship on them, urged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria.

Nigerians should look at our investment profiles, not debt- President Buhari

With less than 48 hours to his regime expiration, President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to look at the investments done by his regime and not focus on the debt accumulated.

“In eight years, I am proud to say that we have doubled Nigeria’s stock of infrastructure to GDP from about 20% to over 40%, and that is no small undertaking,” Mr Buhari said in a series of tweets on Saturday.

“So, as we look at Nigeria’s debt profile, I urge us to also look at the assets and investment profiles, some of which was paid for by debt and some by investment income.”

Nigeria’s total debt profile stood at N12,118, 849.45 with the official exchange rate of $1 to N196, according to Debt Management Office (DMO).

With reckless borrowings of the Buhari regime in eight years, Nigeria’s debt profile hit N46 trillion and is estimated to hit N77 trillion, according to DMO.

Speaking on Mr Buhari’s borrowing spree, former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, whose administration got Nigeria’s debt cleared, wondered what the Buhari-led regime is borrowing for.

Mr Obasanjo condemned the continuous borrowing by the Mr Buhari regime, saying accumulating debt for future generations is “foolish” and “criminal.”

DSS warns against unruly behaviours and non-adherence to protocols during inauguration activities

The Department of State Services, DSS, has warned against any attempt to disrupt the May 29 inauguration of the President-Elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, in a statement on Thursday, May 25, 2023, said any attempt to disrupt the swearing-in will be akin to undermining Nigeria’s security agencies.

“It would be recalled that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC) on 18th May, 2023 held a World Press Conference during which he announced activities for the Presidential inauguration,” the statement read.

“The major highlight of the activities is the swearing-in of the President on 29th May, 2023 in Abuja. On the same date, new Governors will also be inaugurated in most of the States.

“The Service is, however, aware of plans by subversive elements to disrupt the programmes in parts of the country. The aim is to undermine security agencies’ efforts at ensuring peaceful ceremonies as well as creating panic and fear among members of the public.

“Based on these, citizens, the media and Civil Society Organisations are advised to adhere strictly to security and civil protocols during the events. They are also urged to shun fake news, false alarms, skewed reportage/narratives and sensationalism that may likely inflame division, tension and violence prior to and after the exercises.

This is more so that such undesirable acts will serve no purpose other than destroying national unity and cohesion.

Additionally, all unauthorised (and unaccredited) persons are warned to stay away from restricted and certain designated areas at the event venues.

“The Service reiterates its earlier call for the populace to remain calm and law abiding. Meanwhile, it will continue to sustain collaboration with sister agencies to ensure successful inaugurations.”

Kano government exonerates house leader Doguwa of murder charges

House leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa has been exonerated from charges of culpable homicide and mischief by fire, levelled against him.

Recall that the police in Kano charged Mr Doguwa with murder for allegedly killing three people during the 25 February election.

It was initially alleged that the lawmaker was involved in a violent confrontation between members of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) that led to the killing of three people and the burning of a campaign office of the opposition party in the Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano.

Exonerating him of murder charges on Thursday, May 25, Kano’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Musa Abdullahi Lawan, said they have no sufficient evidence linking Doguwa to the arson attack that killed some residents of the state.

Lawan said;

“Based on the foregoing facts and observations, we cannot substantiate charges of criminal conspiracy, mischief by fire and culpable homicide against Doguwa.

“We cannot find sufficient evidence to link him with the said offences considering that we are faced with so many inculpatory and exculpatory evidence for and against him.

“The statements of those that implicated Doguwa were full of contradictions and could not find medical evidence to prove the death of the victims.

“The law is clear that the allegations that Doguwa killed people cannot be substantiated.”

However, eight to 12 suspects arrested would be charged with mischief by fire under Section 336 of the Penal Code (as amended).

Kano Assembly passes child rights protection bill

The Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed the State Child Protection Bill.

The bill was passed after extensive deliberations by the committee of the whole house during the plenary, presided over by Deputy Speaker Kabiru Dashi (APC-Kiru) in Kano.

After the deliberations, the lawmakers approved the third reading of the bill by the clerk, Garba Gezawa.

Shortly after the bill’s passage, the deputy majority leader, Dahiru Zarewa (APC-Rogo), said it was considered and passed after undergoing various legislative processes.

He said the bill’s passage was due to the lawmakers’ commitment to child growth and the state’s development.

“As representatives of the people, we are responsible for providing laws for good governance in the state,” he said.

Mr Zarewa commended the members for engaging relevant stakeholders who contributed to the bill.

According to him, the bill, when signed into law, will improve education and look into the activities of orphanage centres and the issue of child abuse.

The assembly also commended development partners for their support toward the successful passage of the bill.

Similarly, the house passed the Kano State Roads Fund Bill, 2023.Also speaking, the deputy speaker said the bill aimed to support the State Rural Access Roads Agency (KARARA).

He further said it would help to source funds to construct rural access roads.

“The agency, when established, will facilitate and improve the socio-economic well-being of the people, especially the rural populace engaging in agricultural activities,” Mr Dashi said.

Governor Ortom says he has forgiven President Buhari

The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday, May 24, said he has forgiven President Buhari.

Governor Ortom disclosed this while responding to questions on Arise Television.

Recall that President Buhari had in April apologized to aggrieved Nigerians who were not pleased with his administration to forgive him.

The President asked anyone he must have offended to forgive him.

Reacting to the President’s plea for Forgiveness, Governor Oryom has had a long battle with the Buhari administration over the unruly activities of herdsmen in his state, said;

“I have forgiven President Muhammadu Buhari. He has taken us from top to bottom, but that does not mean we should continue to hold it on him, Thank God the constitution provides four years and after four years you can go in four second term and after second term you can another person will come. So we hope that the incoming administration will provide succor, will provide health, will provide security for our people, will provide economic development , will provide peace for our people. We have suffered for eight years. He doesn’t need to go to the Niger Republic. He should stay here (in Nigeria) with us. All of us should work with the incoming administration and by the grace of God, we shall go from bottom to top,” he said
