PDP slams APC for mismanaging Lagos’ resources

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lauded Lagos residents for their tolerance and resilience since the country returned to democracy in 1999, slamming the ruling All Progressives Congress for mismanaging this state’s resources.

“Lagos state is blessed with both natural and human resources, apart from the fact that it is the commercial nerve centre of the nation, and the state has little or nothing to show for it,” PDP’s spokesman in Lagos, Akeem Amode, said this in a message to commemorate the Democracy Day anniversary on Monday in Lagos.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari had declared June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day instead of May 29, instituted by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, in honour of late Chief MKO Abiola.

The declaration followed many years of agitations by civil society groups that Mr Abiola must be immortalised.

Mr Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, died in detention for alleged treason.

Mr Amode, in the message, said there was no doubt that Lagos had yet to enjoy the real dividends of democracy, which Abiola and the June 12, 1993 elections stood for.

“For us in the Lagos State PDP, we believe that the residents of the state deserve more than they are experiencing under the ruling party,” said the statement.

The opposition party added;

“This is a state that ought to set the pace for others in education, health and other infrastructure based on her huge income. By now, Lagos should have been the cynosure of all eyes and built into a city compared to notable cities of the world such as Dubai, Johannesburg and others.”

Mr Amode promised that residents would begin to enjoy their wealth once the PDP takes over power in the state through the election cases before the court.

Lagos has been in the vice-grip of the ruling party (under various names) since 1999 both in the executive and legislative arms of government, with widespread claims that the APC has the ears of the judiciary in the state and at the national level.

“My heart goes to that gentleman distinguished Sen. Ike Ekweremadu,” he said.

He called on Tinubu to deploy all the necessary diplomatic means for the release of Mr Ekweremadu.

Mr Bamidele also mourned four senators who died while serving the people of their senatorial districts in the National Assembly.

They include Sen. Bayo Osinowo (Lagos East), Sen. Rose Oko (Cross River North), Sen. Benjamin Uwajumogu (Imo North) and Sen. Ignatius Longjam (Plateau South).

APC urges IGP to investigate invasion of Matawalle’s residence in Zamfara

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has tasked the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to investigate the vandalisation of former Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara’s residence by individuals masquerading as security operatives.

Musa Mada, the North-West APC publicity secretary, said this at a news conference in Kaduna on Saturday.

“Our enquiry at both the Gusau and Maradu residences of Bello Matawalle confirmed that there was no warrant or anything for that matter presented to the people when the act was carried out by the invaders.

“Furthermore, residences of other government officials that worked with Matawalle during his four-year administration were also invaded, and some of their personal vehicles carted away by the same group,” said Mr Mada.

Mr Mada said the vandalisation violated sections 34, 35, 37, 41 and 42 of the federal republic of Nigeria 1999 Constitution as amended.

He added;

“As a party, we will not tolerate that, and we will watch closely how the authorities concerned will handle the situation to know whether the police and the DSS are working for the PDP or Nigeria.”

He warned,

“If an investigation is not taken, hoodlums may wear uniforms and attack perceived enemies in the name of such operations.”

Mr Muda urged party supporters and Matawalle’s loyalists to remain calm and not take laws into their hands, pending investigation by police authorities.

SSS denies arresting Godwin Emefiele as removal as CBN governor

The State Security Service on Saturday denied arresting former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele.

“Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS,” the agency said on its Twitter handle Saturday morning.

Bayo Onanuga, the publisher of P.M. News and a media aide to President Bola Tinubu, shared a story of Mr Emefiele’s arrest reported by his newspaper on Friday night.

The domestic intelligence office had avoided directly answering Peoples Gazette about whether or not an arrest was made, which led this paper to publish the story citing P.M. News.

This comes after Mr Tinubu suspended Mr Emefiele, replacing him with Adebisi Sonubi, the deputy governor in charge of operations.

The statement announcing Mr Emefiele’s suspension said the CBN governor’s suspension was “sequel to ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”

Mr Emefiele, 61, assumed office on June 4, 2014, following the controversial dismissal of his predecessor Lamido Sanusi by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Mr Emefiele’s tenure saw an unprecedented depletion of Nigeria’s vast foreign reserves, as well as excruciating inflation via currency devaluation.

He repeatedly defended his action as necessary to mitigate the country’s challenges, which became intense after fuel prices fell at the international markets and Nigeria’s production output reduced following incessant hostilities in the oil-rich Niger Delta and a coordinated exodus of foreign oil majors.

Other lawmakers also took turns to appreciate God and their constituencies for the privilege to represent them in the house.

The seventh assembly came into being by a proclamation by Mr Obaseki On June 17, 2019.

All 24 seats were won by the then ruling party, APC.

However, before the proclamation, the politicking of who becomes the speaker tore the legislators-elect into two major factions.

At least 80 killed in violent attacks nationwide in Tinubu’s first week in office

At least 80 citizens were killed in different violent attacks across the country in the first week of President Bola Tinubu’s newly inaugurated government.

Mr Tinubu was sworn in as Nigeria’s 16th president on May 29 at the Eagles Sqaure Abuja, taking over from former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In his inaugural speech, the president listed security as top priority of his government, assuring Nigerians of a more secured country under his watch.

“Security shall be the top priority of our administration because neither prosperity nor justice can prevail amidst insecurity and violence.

To effectively tackle this menace, we shall reform both our security DOCTRINE and its ARCHITECTURE,” Mr Tinubu said.

However, in his first week in office as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, at least 80 citizens were killed.

On June 3, about 25 citizens were brutaly killed and scores injured in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state.

On the same day in Zamfara, 25 people were killed as bandits raided three villages for their refusal to pay “ransom or protection fees” before they’re allowed to farm.

Don’t go on strike – Sanwo-Olu begs NLC

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has begged members of the Nigerian Labour Congress not to embark on a strike over removal of fuel subsidy as announced by President Bola Tinubu during his inaugural speech.

Recall that the NLC on Friday, June 2, issued a five-day ultimatum to the federal government to revert to the old price of petrol or face a nationwide protest.

Sanwo-Olu who addressed reporters on Sunday, June 4, after a post-inauguration church thanksgiving service, appealed to the labour leaders to join hands with the present administration in its commitment to turn the economy of the country around.

He said;

“We are thankful that Mr President is a product of Lagos. We will pray for him and everything that he stands for. We believe he will replicate all the good things he has done in Lagos in our country, Nigeria.

“I want to wish and plead with our citizens even as NLC has said to us that they want to go on strike. It is not the time for a strike. During the campaign trail, everyone of our presidential candidates did say that the first thing they are going to do is to remove the subsidy.

“So, what has changed? What has the current president said or what has he done that is different from what any of the other aspirants said they would do?

“We need to be very patient. He (President Tinubu) has not even done a week. So let us talk to ourselves and say that we shouldn’t turn it political. Let us wait and support this man. He has not done a week on the job. Let him go and reflect and at the sub-national level, we are willing to support him.

“The point is no industrial strike will solve anything at this point, it will certainly not bring an end to the issue. The point will be how are we going to ensure that there is a turnaround in our economy.

“He has mentioned something about a better wage. We have started that in Lagos. We started it in January; so other parts of the country can also do the same. We don’t need to wait for the national government. We just need to reflect on what the challenges are in our country and let us solve the problem.

“I want to plead with the Nigeria Labour Congress. It shouldn’t turn into a political thing because we have begun to see that. The leadership should know that they are leading a pack of people and they need to restrain themselves. Let us be patient. Let us work around it. NNPC has said that there is more than enough petrol.”
