Governor Aliyu disguises, rides tricycle to inspect Sokoto’s specialist hospital

Governor Ahmad Aliyu has disguised himself and visited the Sokoto Specialist Hospital to ascertain the quality of services provided to residents.

The governor’s press secretary Abubakar Bawa said this in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the governor’s decision to visit the facility unannounced followed a series of concerns raised by Sokoto residents over poor service delivery.

The statement added that other concerns that forced the governor to visit the hospital were dilapidated structures, erratic power supply, shortage of staff and lack of functional medical equipment, among others.

The governor visited the hospital in a tricycle to get first-hand information from its workers.

“I was surprised with what I saw during my visit to the hospital, which lasted for four hours; it afforded me the opportunity to see things for myself,” Mr Aliyu explained.

“Patients and their relatives are subjected to all kinds of hazardous situations owing to the dirty environment and lack of functional equipment in the medical facility.”

The Sokoto governor added,

“Patient relatives rely solely on their personal alternative source of power due to the erratic electricity supply in the hospital. Therefore, I have directed the management of the hospital to see me for further discussion on how to remedy the situation.”

The poor state of things at the hospital may not be unconnected with the inability of past administrations to release the monthly allocations due to the hospital.

Governor Yahaya Bello to raise N15 billion for third Kogi university

On Monday, Governor Yahaya Bello’s government announced plans to raise N15 billion to establish a third state university in Kabba.

Wemi Jones, education commissioner, disclosed this while briefing journalists shortly after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting in Lokoja.

Mr Jones said the SEC had already approved the memo containing the bill to establish Kogi State University, Kabba. He said the attorney general had also been directed to transmit the bill to the Kogi House of Assembly for consideration and passage.

“We are very much aware that a Faculty of Law is one of the prerequisites for the National University Commission (NUC) to recognise and approve any request for a private university in Nigeria,” the commissioner explained.

“Therefore, the Kogi state government is working towards ensuring that before the end of the coming weeks, NUC will have given approval to the state university.”

Mr Jones added,

“In fact, the recently inaugurated implementation committee chaired by Prof Olu Obafemi is working alongside other stakeholders to speed up the process.”

The commissioner used the opportunity to clarify the rumour over alleged plans to convert the College of Education (Technical), Kabba, into a site for the university. He said the news was false and “unauthenticated information.”

However, the commissioner explained that the committee, after several considerations, concluded that it was expedient to start the Kogi State University, Kabba, at the College of Education (Technical) Kabba while the college of education would be relocated.

Party members who worked against Tinubu, ex-Gov Oyetola will be punished- APC

Tajudeen Lawal, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, says party members engaged in anti-party activities during the governorship and general elections in the state will not be spared.

Mr Lawal said this during a welcome home party organised by APC Reformation Forum in the Ijesa federal constituency for Ijesa sons, who served at the national and state assembly, as well as in the cabinet of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, on Sunday in Ilesa.

APC lost the July 16, 2022, governorship election to PDP due to a crisis within the party.

The party also lost all the national assembly seats to the PDP.

The chairman, however, urged “genuine members” of the party not to lose hope, adding that with hard work and commitment, the party would return to power in 2026.

“No member of the party involved in anti-party during the last governorship and general elections in the state will be spared. I want to appeal to genuine members of the party not to lose hope because come 2026, we shall return to power,” he explained.

Besides, Mr Lawal dismissed a statement credited to the elders’ caucus of the party that the immediate past interior minister Rauf Aregbesola should seek genuine forgiveness to return to the party.

“I read what the Igbimo Agba (elder caucus) of our party said, but they are in the advisory role of the party. The party in no distant time will state its position on it,” he added.

“Meanwhile, we must be clear about this. We are not restructuring the party. The party is intact in Osun under Baba Bisi Akande and Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola.”

Timothy Owoeye, the immediate past speaker of the state’s house of assembly, urged members of the party to embrace peace and work in unionism.

Mr Owoeye, one of the awardees at the event, noted that with unity in the party, it would be easier for the party to return to power in 2026.

Also, Oluremi Omowaye, the ex-commissioner for works, said members of the party involved in anti-party activities must be sanctioned before allowing them back.

Mr Omowaye, another event awardee, said that though politics was a game of numbers, the party must not condone indiscipline.

“I am an advocate of the more, the merrier, but it is important we send a message to those involved in anti-party activities so that next time, another set of people won’t engage in such (an) act,” added Mr Omowaye.

The chairman of the planning committee of the occasion, Lukman Abubakre, said the event was organised to honour sons and daughters of Ijesa land for their commitment to the service of their fatherland.

NNPP voids suspension of Imo chairman

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has voided the suspension of its Imo chairman, Charles Duruimo, by the party’s local government chairmen.

At a news conference in Abuja, the NNPP national publicity secretary, Agbo Major, said the decision was taken by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

He recounted a leadership crisis in the state chapter of the party, which resulted in the suspension of the chairman for anti-party activities.

“Duruimo dismissed his removal, stating that his leadership had earlier suspended the officers and members involved in the plot to sack him.

“The national leadership of the party, led by Alhaji Abba Kawu-Ali, has stepped into the matter with a view to amicably resolving it in the interest of the party and the good people of Imo who desired a new and better Nigeria on the platform of NNPP,” Mr Major said.

He added,

“All actions taken by the two sides in the leadership disagreement are null and void and of no effect in running the affairs of the party in Imo.”

Mr Major said the affected officers of the party did not explore the appropriate channel of communication and procedure in handling the dispute.

He added that in the next few days, the state executive would be invited to Abuja to resolve the crisis formally.

He said the need for peace, unity, teamwork and synergy in running the affairs of the party in Imo could not be overemphasised as it prepared for the November 2023 governorship election.

Major called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to provide a level playing field to all political parties and their candidates in the upcoming poll and ensure the people’s mandate was respected.

He advised INEC to test-run its Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) to avoid the hitches associated with past elections.

“Every vote matters and should be counted and counted in the overall results. This is the only way to consolidate the nation’s frail democracy and reaffirms Nigerians’ confidence in the electoral process,” he added.

President Tinubu includes firefighting vehicle in motorcade

The president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved the inclusion of the Service Rapid Intervention Vehicle in his motorcade.

The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Jaji Abdulganiyu, disclosed this while receiving the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Oluwatoyin Akinlade, in his office on Thursday.

He said Tinubu will be the first president to have a firefighting vehicle in his convoy in the history of the country.

Abdulganiyu said;

“Mr President Bola Tinubu has given the approval to include the Service Rapid Intervention Vehicle in his motorcade. This is the first in the history of Nigeria.”

He added that the service had recently procured 15 of the vehicles, saying, “We have just procured 15 Ford-built Rapid Intervention Vehicles, already delivered to the service and awaiting commissioning and deployment. The Rapid Intervention Vehicle is ideal for combating fire during its initial stages.”

He, however, said the service lacked the “needed manpower to effectively carry out its mandates.”

Meanwhile, Akinlade promised that the “welfare of personnel in the service would be prioritised to keep their morale high.”

Ogun community seeks government intervention over bad road

Landlords and residents of Itesiwaju Omu Arogun Area Community Development Committee have lamented hardship over the deplorable state of the Mowe-Ofada Road, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The residents, including leaders in the community, while speaking with our correspondent, said the construction of the road started during the administration of the former governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun, adding that the road had been abandoned.

They also said the palliative work done by the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, did not assuage their suffering, adding that the deplorable state of the Mowe-Ofada Road had become a death trap for residents plying the route to navigate their destinations in the community.

It was learnt that during the rainy season, floods usually submerge the road, and the situation worsens the experiences of road users including transport workers plying the axis.

A resident in one of the communities under the association, Emmanuel Akande, while lamenting over the hardship experienced on the road, said the situation worsened during the rainy season.

He said,

“The rainy season has made this road bad to go through; we have been appealing to the government but nothing significant has been done. We have had enough deaths recorded because of the bad road.”

Speaking with our correspondent, the Chairman of Arigbawonwo Area CDC under the association, Adekanye Adetola, who appealed to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, to intervene in the matter, said construction work on the road was being done at a snail’s speed.

He said,

“We want the government to help us fix Mowe/Ofada Road of which the construction has been on for about seven years now. The first part of the road which is a dual carriage was done by the former governor, Ibikunle Amosun, while the present governor, Dapo Abiodun, did palliatives on it before the election.

“We need more of governments’ presence in providing basic infrastructure for the community. We have not been having it good when it comes to government infrastructural facilities. We do provide everything by ourselves including the roads.

“The government did not even realise that our community really existed, thinking it was farmland. During the last election, the government got to know how populated this place was when they saw the voters’ registration,” he said.

In his reaction, the Chairman, Itesiwaju Omu Arogun ACDC under the association, Yemi Adebisi, said the poor state of the road had been causing accidents that claimed the lives of residents.

He said, “It is sad that because of the bad state of this road, several lives have been lost to accidents. Government should please give this a priority. Once it rains in Mowe and its environs, it is usually difficult for children to go to school because of the flood on the road.

“Also, commuters from Mowe cannot travel to Ofada. Most of the residents will have to navigate through Lagos Ibadan Expressway to go to Abeokuta because the Owode-Ofada Road had been sacked. We want the government to help us fix the road.

“Though we learnt that the governor has already awarded it, and work will commence after the rainy season, we want him to help us follow up. We are confident that our governor will do it for us because he is a man that acts on his words.”

Ekiti governor donates N1.5m, mattresses to special schools

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has made a personal donation of N1.5 million and hundreds of mattresses to the three special schools in the state in fulfilment of his earlier promise to support the students with needed facilities.

The benefiting schools are Government Special School for the Physically Challenged and Mentally Retarded, Ido Ekiti; Government Special School for the Deaf, Ikoro Ekiti; and Government Special School for the Blind, Ikere Ekiti.

His wife, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, who made the donation on the governor’s behalf, said the gesture was borne out of compassion toward ensuring the well-being of students living with disabilities in the state.

The governor’s wife said the visit was also to ensure an on-the-spot assessment of the school’s facilities and to determine the welfare and well-being of the special students.

While encouraging the students to reciprocate the present administration’s love and kindness by being obedient and paying more attention to their education, Oyebanji also charged the teachers and other workers to continue to show love to the students, promising that there would be regular visits to the schools to ensure that proper attention is given to the students.

She told the students,

“You are special and dear to the heart of the governor and the government of the state. That is why particular attention is being paid to your welfare and well-being. I want you to reciprocate this by focusing on your education, which will prepare you for a great future. She urged them to see themselves as a special creature of God with a purpose to fulfill.

Senator Bulkachuwa admitted committing crime and should be prosecuted- NBA

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION, MR YAKUBU CHONOKO MAIKYAU, OON, SAN, ON THE COMMENTS BY SENATOR ADAMU MUHAMMAD BULKACHUWA ON THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE ON MONDAY, 12 JUNE 2023

14 June 2023.

My attention was drawn to a viral video clip on the social media, of the comments made by Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa on the floor of the Senate on Monday, 12 June 2023, at the valedictory session of the Senate of the 9th Assembly, before he was interrupted and stopped by the then Senate President Ahmed Lawan.

Senator Bulkachuwa, in his remarks, amongst other things, referred to “confidential dealings” he had had with some of his colleagues in the Senate, and went on to say:

“I look at faces in this chamber whom have come to me and sought for my help when my wife was the President of the Court of Appeal, and I’m sure…In his concluding remarks, he said: And I must thank particularly, my wife, whose freedom and independence I encroached upon while she was in office, and she has been very tolerant and accepted my encroachment, and extended her help to my colleagues…”

All these were amidst several interjections by the Senate President. Probably, if the Senate President had not interrupted Senator Bulkachuwa, he would have made more vital/useful revelations that would have provided specific details of the “confidential dealings of one sort or the other” he allegedly had with some of his colleagues in which according to him, “I did my best and in most cases I succeeded.

Notwithstanding however, given the office held by his wife which he clearly mentioned in his remarks, no one would be left in doubt as to the sort of help he either succeeded or did not succeed in securing for his colleagues, with whom he had since become good friends and still remain good friends.

These colleagues, according to him, only “thanked me for what I have done with words of mouth, that was all.”

The statements were clearly admissions by the Senator, that he did attempt to, and/or actually perverted the course of justice/interfered with due administration of justice, which makes him liable to be investigated and prosecuted even on his admission.

That this came with a huge negative impact on the integrity and the independence of the Judiciary can only be an understatement. At the 102nd meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC) held today, 14 June 2023, I took the liberty of my membership of the Council to complain about the rather disgusting and despicable conduct of Senator Bulkachuwa, which was a direct attack on the integrity of the Judiciary.

The NJC condemned the actions of the Senator in the strongest terms as an affront on the integrity and independence of the Judiciary. I made it clear to the Council that, while the NBA will at all times rise to the defence of the honour, integrity and independence of the judiciary, we shall not hesitate to take on anyone, either within or outside the legal profession, who takes steps or makes statements that are capable of undermining the independence of the judiciary and the impartiality judicial processes.

It is in this regard that I call on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to immediately invite Senator Ahmad Muhammad Bulkachuwa for interrogation and proceed to prosecute him accordingly.

I shall write a letter to both the IGP and the ICPC Chairman in this respect. We reiterate our commitment to the maintenance and defence of the integrity and independence of the Judiciary in Nigeria, within the bounds of the law, irrespective of the personalities involved.

Police seal 17 secretariats as Plateau governor, LGA chairmen face off

Police have sealed the secretariats of all 17 local government councils in Plateau.

This is contained in a statement by police spokesman DSP Alfred Alabo on Thursday.

“The decision followed an order from the inspector general of police Usman Baba, to seal up the secretariats of the councils,” said the statement.

“The order is due to skirmishes arising from the suspension of local government chairmen and subsequent appointment of transition committee by the state government.”

According to him, in a bid to take the mantle of leadership by the appointed chairmen and the resistance by the suspended chairmen was posing serious threats to the peace and security of the state.

“The IG has ordered the commissioner of police in Plateau, Bartholomew Onyeka, to seal up all the secretariats of all the local government areas in the state. This is necessary as a result of tensions around the leadership of the councils and the possible threat that supporters are posing to critical infrastructure, lives and properties in the state,” the statement added.

The police force said the decision “is in accordance with the exercise of our constitutional responsibility as the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to ensure that the above doesn’t hold sway on the Plateau,” adding that “to this end, the NPF on the Plateau cannot sit down and watch things go wrong under its watch, hence the need to make this critical decision of sealing up the local government secretariats.”

Governor Caleb Mutfwang had on 1 June suspended all democratic structures in the state’s 17 local government areas following the recommendation of the Plateau House of Assembly.

Mr Muftwang said the suspension followed their inability to produce documents related to financial transactions in the various local governments, saying all efforts to make them produce the documents were unsuccessful.

After carefully studying the recommendations, he explained that the Plateau government resolved to suspend the chairpersons to conduct an efficient and proper investigation of the development.

Labour Party lawmaker Emeruwa becomes Abia’s eighth assembly speaker

Emmanuel Emeruwa of the Labour Party (representing Aba South) has emerged as the eighth Abia House of Assembly speaker.

Another Labour Party lawmaker, Okezie Augustine, representing the Umuahia East constituency, also emerged as the deputy speaker of the house.

Mr Emeruwa was nominated by Uche Akachukwu, representing the Aba Central, and seconded by Emeka Obioma, representing the Umuahia South constituency.

Attempts by two lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Solomon Akpulonu (Obingwa East constituency) and Mandela Obasi (Ohafia North constituency), to nominate PDP’s candidate for the deputy speakership were overlooked by the clerk of the house, John-Pedro Iroakazi.

The development caused a mild uproar on the house floor as the PDP members began to raise objections.

In an acceptance speech after the return of normalcy, the speaker promised that he would pilot the affairs of the house without fear or favour.

He described Governor Alex Otti’s efforts to enthrone excellence in governance as commendable, saying that the governor’s leadership style would serve as a guiding principle for him as a speaker.

Mr Emeruwa said,

“I am deeply honoured by the trust reposed in me, and I pledge to serve with unwavering integrity and dedication. I will serve to produce good laws and support the executive to propagate prosperity in the state. The mandate you have given me will be carried with utmost diligence.”

In a proclamation speech, the governor called for a partnership between the executive and legislative arms of government to foster productive development in Abia, stressing that building meaningful collaboration between both arms would allow for more effective, reliable and productive administration.

He described the legislature as “a crucial part of government” and expressed his readiness to support the house to churn out good laws for the betterment of Abia.

Mr Otti appealed to the legislators to place a premium on the mandate given to them by their constituents by joining him to transform the state into an investors’ haven.

“Our government will be a government of zero excuses and 100 per cent action. I extend a warm handshake to everyone, and I will work with everyone regardless of party affiliations so that we can deliver the real dividend of democracy to our people,” said the Abia governor.

There are 24 parliament members (10 Labour Party, 11 PDP, two Young Progressives Party and one APC).Of the PDP lawmakers, only four returned from the seventh house.

Cambodia to ban politicians who don’t vote from contesting elections

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said on Tuesday that the country would amend its election law to ban any politicians who do not vote from running for political offices.

According to him, if politicians do not cast their ballots on the general election day, they would have no right to stand for any election level.

He said it was the common people’s right to decide whether to go to the polls, but politicians must vote, or their right to be a candidate in any elections will be revoked.

It added that over 9.7 million Cambodians had registered to cast their ballots.
