“My decision to resign is based on the unfortunate death of my principal, a fearless and honest leader, Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Oduniayo Akeredolu, SAN CON, whom I am loyal to even in death.

“I sincerely thank his excellency for the opportunity granted me to serve in his administration as a member of the State Executive Council, first as a Head of Service and now special adviser.

Saraki, Atiku, others mourn as Akeredolu succumbs to prostate cancer

Tributes and condolence messages continue to trail the passing of Ondo State former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who died in the early hours of Wednesday.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki said Mr Akeredolu’s journey from serving as an attorney-general in Ondo to becoming the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and eventually the governor of Ondo State is a “remarkable, inspiring, and accomplished life, by all standards.”

“As I join his dear family, my mother’s kinsmen and women in Owo Town, where the late governor also hailed from, the people of Ondo State, and the Nigerian Bar Association in mourning the passing of this giant, we take solace in the fact that he left behind a legacy marked by service to our nation,” Mr Saraki added.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described Mr Akeredolu as a “quintessential gentleman who took the finesse to governance.”

“A two-term elected governor of the Sunshine State, Akeredolu was a politician of class because he was never known for destructive politics,” Mr Atiku added while expressing his condolences to the late governor’s family.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also penned a condolence message where he described the late politician as a “leader that placed the interest of his people above every other consideration; a man of integrity and strong conviction, with a strict work ethos and never paid lip service to the welfare of the people of the state.”

“He was a fearless lawyer who spoke truth to power, regardless of whose ox was gored.

“As governor, Chief Akeredolu left his footprints in the sands of history, executing landmark projects and implementing people-oriented policies that earned him a second term in office,” he added.

Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, also mourned Mr Akeredolu. A statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said Mr Akeredolu was one of Nigeria’s finest and that his “wise counsel and constructive contributions will be missed.”

The All Progressives Congress Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, wrote that the party shares the grief of the Akeredolu family and the people of Ondo State.

“His dedication to ensuring peace, stability, and unity within the state will forever be remembered. Governor Akeredolu’s departure leaves a significant void in our political landscape.

“His absence will be felt by all who had the privilege of working with him, collaborating on projects, or simply experiencing his remarkable leadership firsthand,” Mr Ganduje said.

The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, chronicled the contributions of the late governor in a statement that the palace’s media office released.

“When we were challenged at the grassroots by invaders who masqueraded as herdsmen, Aketi worked with stakeholders across South-West and the national level to deliver our mandate of security and prosperity.

“This birthed Amotekun and other initiatives through which our people are safer and more confident to embark on their lawful businesses daily.

“He was an honest, bold and courageous leader whose legacy will never be forgotten. If Akeredolu tells you anything, that is the way it is,” Mr Ogunwusi said.

The Olubadan of Ibadan, Lekan Balogun, said Mr Akeredolu was an “indefatigable politician and legal icon.

“In politics, he proved himself an enigma, winning gubernatorial elections on two different occasions and but for his untimely death, he would have succeeded in governing his Ondo State for two terms of eight years; that’s not a mean achievement,” he added.

Mr Akeredolu died after his battle with prostate cancer. He sought medical care in Nigeria and abroad, which kept him out of official government functions in the months leading up to his demise.

Tinubu ignored my advice not to run for presidency – Soyinka

Nigerian foremost dramatist, Prof Wole Soyinka has said that President Bola Tinubu ignored his advice not to run for presidency.

Soyinka, who paid a courtesy visit to Tinubu, at his Lagos home, said he was there to see how the President and his wife were doing after ignoring his advice.

The literary icon said he has submitted a seven-point agenda to the President during the visit he described as an “embarrassing” one.

“I came here with a seven-point agenda. And we had a very thorough discussion on those items,” Soyinka told reporters after the visit.

“Actually, it’s an embarrassing visit because when I visited him the last time, it was to try and persuade him not to run for office.

“I told Atiku and himself to please leave the ground so young people could run. That’s the last time we met about five years ago.

“So I came to see how he was doing after ignoring my advice. I came to see how both he and his wife were weathering Nigeria, and to wish them a Happy Christmas,” he said.

Emefiele rejects investigator’s report

Embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has faulted allegations of stolen funds against him in the recently released report of the Special Investigator on the CBN and Related Entities.

He explained his stance in a statement on Sunday titled, ‘Re: Emefiele, others stole billions, illegally kept Nigeria’s funds in foreign banks’.

Last week, the Special Investigator on the CBN and Related Entities, Jim Obazee, disclosed that the ex-CBN governor lodged £543, 482,213 in fixed deposits in UK banks alone without authorisation.

Obaze’s report partly read, “The former governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele invested Nigeria’s money without authorisation in 593 foreign bank accounts in the United States, China and the United Kingdom, while he was in charge.

“All the accounts where the billions were lodged have all been traced by the investigator.”

But reacting in a statement on Sunday, Emefiele said, “After my release on bail from the correctional centre, Kuje, my attention was drawn to publications released by some mainstream and online news platforms.

The sources of the information published by both media houses were credited to a certain report prepared by a Mr. Jim Obazee, who was appointed by the President as a private investigator.

“I have gone through the publications, and I say boldly that the contents of the said publications are false, misleading and calculated to disparage my person, injure my character and serve the selfish interest of the private investigator.

Emefiele added, “Because of my present situation, I have been advised by my lawyers not to say anything in respect of the matters which have been submitted to the court for adjudication.

However, I need to address some of the issues raised in the publication which are barefaced lies told by the investigator in order to achieve his satanic agenda.”

First, he added, “It was reported that contrary to the provision of the CBN Act 2007, there was no presidential approval for the naira redesign.

“I wish to state unequivocally that there was indeed a presidential approval, and the said approval was handed over to the same Jim Obazee during the process of his investigation in the presence of senior CBN officials and his own investigative team.

“Moreover, former President Muhammadu Buhari has stated on a number of occasions that he authorised and approved the naira redesign. I am therefore at a loss as to why Mr Jim Obazee will mislead Nigerians that there was no presidential approval.

“The report also claimed that the sum of $6.23m was withdrawn from the CBN vault based on a false presidential directive bearing the signature of the former president Muhammadu Buhari, and that of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha.”

About two weeks ago, he said, Obazee in the company of a certain Deputy Commissioner of Police from Force CID, came to Kuje to ask him questions in respect of the said document in the presence of my lawyers.

He explained, “I stated verbally and in writing that I have no knowledge of such directive from the former president and the former SGF.

“In fact, I told them that that was the first time I would be seeing the documents. On this, I challenge Jim Obazee to publish the said documents and also the statements that I made to them.”

The former CBN governor said, “The final issue that I would like to respond to is the issue of the 593 accounts which were purportedly opened in different parts of the world.“I state categorically that I am not involved in the opening of these accounts and I do not know about their openings.

“The fixed deposits in those foreign accounts are definitely outside my knowledge. However, let me state clearly, that the relevant departments of the CBN have the authority to carry out such activities in line with their lawful mandate within the CBN.

“I therefore join well-meaning Nigerians who have spoken on this matter and have demanded a thorough and transparent investigation of all these alleged frauds.”

He added that, “I have instructed my lawyers to immediately commence the legal process to clear my name from the defamatory statements contained in the report and by extension the publications.”
