Borno Assembly Speaker dismisses claim by Minister Lai, says Boko Haram in full control of Guzamala LGA

The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Abdulkarim Lawan has faulted the claim made by the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed and Gen Gabriel Olonisakin, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), that all the 27 Local Government Areas in the state have been liberated from the stronghold of Boko Haram.

Lawan who faulted the claim on Monday while speaking at a Concerned Stakeholders’ meeting in Maiduguri, said that terrorists were in full control of the Guzamala Local Government Area of the state.

The lawmaker further stressed that the entire Guzamala Local Government area where he hailed from, is still under the control of the Boko Haram sect as there is no existence of civil life in the area.

There is no single existence of civil life in Guzamala, not to even talk of Military presence in the Council Headquarter and its surrounding communities. All the area is dominated by armed Boko Haram Fighters,” Lawan said.

He also added that he has been agitating for military presence in Guzamala to enable his displaced people take advantage of Gov. Babagana Zulum’s move in reconstruction and resettlement, but to no avail, as Guzamala is still a ‘no go area’.

We have a total of 774 Local Government areas in Nigeria, we in Guzamala Council want the Federal Government to tell us whether Guzalama has been cancelled out of the 774 so that we can know our position and look for the option,” Lawan said.

Trump ‘unremorseful’ over Capitol riot – Report

Former United States President, Donald Trump, is reportedly not showing any remorse for the riot that broke out at the Capitol Building on January 6.

Trump had allegedly incited his supporters to disrupt Congress sitting to ratify the victory of President Joe Biden on November 3, 2020 election.

At his impeachment trial on Thursday, Senators were told that the ex-President has not expressed any regret over the violent incident and his lack of remorse could influence wavering members.

A congress source reported that Trump was unmoved by the footage while watching the trial from his home in Florida.

Mr. Trump was in a really good mood during the second day of his impeachment trial as shocking footage from the Capitol riots was shown.

“So far, he has not shown any remorse or contrition,” the source said.

Former Vice President, Mike Pence, who was seen in footage being ushered away by the Secret Service with his family as the mob attacked the Capitol, has reportedly still not repaired his relationship with Trump over the incident.

At the resumed sitting on Thursday, prosecutors will conclude their arguments for the impeachment of Trump while a verdict could be out as early as Friday.

Jakande to be buried Today

The late former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, will be buried on today.

Jakande, who ruled the state from October 1, 1979, to December 31, 1983, died on Thursday.

He was 91.

The ex-governor’s Committee of Friends announced the burial arrangement in a statement on Thursday.

The statement was signed by a former Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Abisogun Leigh, Alhaja Latifat Gbajabiamila, Prince Bayo Oshiyemi, Mrs. Omolara Abeke Vaugh, Alhaja Gani Owolabi Dada, and Kamal Giwa.

President Biden cancels funding for Trump border wall

US President Joe Biden has rescinded the national emergency order used to fund Donald Trump’s border wall.

In a letter to Congress on Thursday, Mr Biden wrote that the order was “unwarranted” and said that no further tax dollars will be spent on the wall.

Mr Trump declared a state of emergency over the southern border in 2019, which allowed him to bypass Congress and use military funds for its construction.

When Mr Trump left office, about $25bn (£18bn) had been spent on the project.

The announcement from President Biden is the latest in a series of executive orders that have rolled back key parts of the former president’s agenda.

Last week, Mr Biden signed orders seeking to reunite migrant families split up by Trump-era policies, and ordered a probe of his predecessor’s immigration agenda.

In a letter on Thursday, Mr Biden wrote that he would also seek a review of “all resources appropriated or redirected” to the construction of the wall.

Building a border wall was a signature pledge of Mr Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

But the project faced strong opposition in the Democratic-controlled House, and the Republican president announced he would use emergency powers to fund its construction.

An emergency declaration allows US presidents to circumvent the usual political process and to access military funding.

Various types of fencing totalling 654 miles (just over 1,000 km) were already in place before Mr Trump became president in 2017.

During his his time in office, 80 miles of new barriers were built where there were none before, and almost 400 miles replaced existing parts of the structure.

“Trump’s national emergency was never about security,” wrote Arizona Democratic Congressman Raul Grivalva on Twitter following Biden’s announcement. “Now we must cancel the contracts and ensure that not another foot of the border wall is constructed.”

Former Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller also took to Twitter to comment on the decision, writing “Biden loves illegal immigration”.

But some parts of the Trump administration’s immigration policy will be left in place.

At a press conference on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki appeared to confirm the new administration would keep a Trump-era policy that allowed border officials to summarily expel undocumented immigrants amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Due to the pandemic and the fact that we have not had the time, as an administration, to put in place a humane, comprehensive process for processing individuals who are coming to the border,” she said. “Now is not the time to come, and the vast majority of people will be turned away”.

First civilian governor of Lagos State , Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande Died Today.

One of the things that Lateef Jakande will always be remembered for is the landmark development he brought to Lagos State during his tenure as the governor, both in the education sector working with the five cardinal plan of the Unity party of Nigeria which was established by Awolowo and also in the housing sector amongst other things he achieved for the state.

Governor Sanwo-Olu announced the death of Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, a very great man in the service of Lagos State, Nigeria and humanity, a venerable Stateman, an outstanding politician, an administrator and the first civilian governor of Lagos State.

Gov Obaseki vows to flush out killer herdsmen from Edo forests

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has vowed that his government will “comb every forest” in the state to flush out killer herdsmen and other criminals in the state.

Obaseki disclosed this on Wednesday when he led heads of security agencies in the state on a fact-finding tour of Ugo community in Orhionmwon local government area where some families allegedly lost their loved ones to herdsmen attacks.

The governor who praised the residents of the area for not taking the laws into their hands in the face of provocation by the herdsmen, said the people of the state were not against anyone who conducts their business “legally and lawfully.”

I am here with the Commissioner of Police, Philip Agbadu, and other heads of security agencies in the state to commiserate with you.

“This is to tell you how seriously we take what has happened in Ugo.

“We are here first to commiserate with you and to let you know that we feel your pains and that as a government, we are very concerned and worried.

“The principal role of any government is to protect the lives and property of citizens. We are here to find out for ourselves what actually happened and to make certain decisions.

I know this is not the first time it has happened, but we want to make sure that this sort of thing does not happen again in this community.

“I want to thank you for being law-abiding citizens and not taking laws into your hands.

“I want to assure you that an operation will be carried out. I am very happy with the number of vigilantes I see in the community, which means that you have enough information.

“We are not against the presence of anybody who wants to come and do business here.

Whether they want to come and herd their cattle or they want to do other business here, you are not against them.

“we are only saying that, if they want to come and graze, they must do it legally and lawfully,” the governor said while addressing the residents.

Cows that strayed into Soyinka’s compound owned by Yoruba man —Police

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, on Wednesday said that the cows that strayed into the compound of Professor Wole Soyinka, belongs to a Yoruba man.

The police commissioner disclosed this while speaking with newsmen during a visit to the property.

According to Ajogun, three cows strayed into the compound and they were immediately driven away.

He said: “Three of the cows that the guy was driving strayed into the compound of the Nobel Laureate, not more than about 20 metres away from the entrance and they were immediately chased out.

I also learnt that our highly revered Nobel Laureate even saw the cows heading towards the direction of his compound and of course directed that they should be chased away and they were chased away.

“The cows are owned by a gentleman by the name Kazeem Sorinola who is a Yoruba chap, and that is the joy of everything. He placed the cows in charge of a Fulani chap. So, the cows are not owned by any Fulani man, but the person in charge of the cows is a young Fulani man.

“No destruction was carried out on the compound and the act was not a willful one.”

It would be recalled that there were viral reports online, especially on the social media, of cows and herdsmen invading the home of the Nobel Laureate, with some of the reports claiming that he was attacked.

Instagram bans Robert F Kennedy Jr for false claims about coronavirus

Instagram has removed the account of Robert F Kennedy Jr for making false claims about coronavirus and vaccines.

The nephew of late President John F Kennedy had his account permanently taken down “for repeatedly sharing debunked claims”, Facebook, which owns Instagram, said in a statement.

His Facebook account remains active despite similar claims posted there.

These have included linking the death of legendary baseball player Hank Aaron to the Covid-19 vaccine.

Facebook has vowed to remove false claims about Covid-19 vaccines to prevent “imminent physical harm”.

Mr Kennedy, a lawyer and environmentalist, is the son of late former US attorney general, senator and presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy.

He chairs Children’s Health Defense, a group that expresses scepticism about the health benefits of vaccines. He also campaigned against the immunisation of measles during a resurgence of the infection.

Speaking last year at a conference for the National Vaccine Information Centre, a controversial group accused of spreading misinformation on vaccines, Mr Kennedy said people were hearing his message and “those seeds are landing on very fertile ground”.

He has addressed anti-lockdown protests and his videos are regularly translated by activists based in other countries.

In December, his niece, Kerry Kennedy Meltzer, a physician, wrote a piece in the New York Times entitled: Vaccines Are Safe, No Matter What Robert Kennedy Jr Says.

We won’t allow fresh Protest–FG

The Federal Government says it will not allow any fresh protest at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, saying security operatives are ready to guide against violence.

After the Lagos Judicial Panel probing the #EndSARS protests of October 2020 gave the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) approval to repossess the tollgate, there was outrage across the country.

Lai Mohammed- Minister of Information and Culture

To demonstrate against the action of the panel, some Nigerians scheduled a protest for Saturday, February 13, 2021.

But at a press conference on Thursday, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, warned those planning the protest.

Referring to the carnage across Lagos during the #EndSARS protests, the minister said the government would not fold its arms and watch Lagos “burn again”.

He said, “As you may be aware, some EndSars proponents have given notice of their plan to return to Lagos – Lekki Toll Gate to be specific – on Saturday, February 13th 2021. The ”Occupy Lekki Toll Gate” flyers have been circulating online, with the proponents threatening that ”Lagos will burn” again.

“Never again will the Federal Government allow the kind of violence that was perpetrated across the country under the guise of the EndSars last October. Never again will anyone or group be allowed to destroy cities or to kill and maim innocent citizens, including security agents, under any guise.

“The EndSars campaign last October started as a peaceful protest against police brutality. As a government that believes in the constitutionally-guaranteed right of citizens to engage in peaceful protests, the Federal Government did nothing to hinder the protests for as long as they remained peaceful.

“The trillion-Naira destruction of Lagos, in particular, remains too fresh a wound. Hundreds, including the youth, lost their livelihoods to the wanton attacks in Lagos. The burnt wreckage of public buses that were wantonly set ablaze by rampaging hoodlums remain in their positions as a sad and gory reminder of the unprecedented attacks. The city is still reeling from the war-like destruction.

“For those who are using justice as an alibi for another round of destruction, let me say this: As we speak, the Judicial Panels of Inquiry, set up across the country to receive and investigate complaints of police brutality or related extra-judicial killings, with a view to delivering justice for all victims of the dissolved SARS and other police units, are continuing with the assignments. In Lagos, the Judicial Panel of Inquiry has an added responsibility of investigating the incident of October 20th at the Lekki Toll Gate.

“Like we have said many times, anyone who has any information on the alleged shooting or purported massacre at the Lekki Toll Gate, including the names and addresses of those who were purportedly killed, should head to the Panel to give it such information. This is how to enhance the search for justice, not by rabble rousing or engaging in media shows.

“However, any further resort to violence in the name of EndSars will not be tolerated this time. The security agents are ready for any eventuality. A situation in which six soldiers and 37 policemen were murdered in cold blood by hoodlums will not repeat itself. The attack, looting and razing of 269 private and public property will not happen again. The killing of 57 civilians will not be re-enacted.

“We therefore strongly warn those who are planning to re-occupy Lekki Toll Gate on Saturday to desist. We know that many of those who have been loudest on social media in advertising the plan to reconvene in Lagos on Saturday are not even in Nigeria. They are elsewhere around the world fanning the embers of violence and inciting gullible people back home. No one should fall for their antics.

“The Federal Government is also keenly watching the role being played by the various social media platforms in this renewed clamour for violence in the country. Recall that the social media platforms that eagerly nudged on the EndSars protesters, until the situation got out of hand, are the same ones that quickly pulled the plug on even their own President when the chips were down in their own country.”

#EndSARS Defrozen Accounts: FG’s Decision To Comply With The Court Order Is Not Out Of Intimidation — AGF Malami.

Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, says President Muhammadu Buhari tolerated the “excesses” of the #EndSARS protesters.
Speaking on Wednesday when he featured on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Malami said Buhari was “lenient” with the #EndSARS protesters, despite what he referred to as the “violations and destruction” which resulted from the crisis that followed the demonstrations.
In October 2020, Nigerian youths took to the streets in many parts of the country to protest against police brutality, while calling for the disbandment of the now-defunct special anti-robbery squad (SARS).
The protests were initially peaceful, until hoodlums infiltrated the demonstrations, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties.
According to Malami, no nation in the world would tolerate the destruction of its security institutions, adding that “over 200 policemen were killed in the process of the purported freedom of expression”.
“I think the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has been very, and indeed extraordinarily, lenient with the human rights protection and that was indeed what caused the problems associated with the violations of the  #EndSARS protests,” he said.

“Take for example: no nation in the world could have tolerated a situation whereby over 200 of its policemen were killed in the purported process of freedom of expression. Nigeria has tolerated that.
“No nation in the world could have tolerated the idea of destruction to its security institutions. I think over 20 police stations or more — I’m not certain about the number, they can be more — were destroyed during #EndSARS protests and government has a responsibility to ensure protection of lives and freedom of movement.
“We are confronted with a situation whereby #EndSARS protesters blocked roads, caused mayhem, caused deaths, caused destruction, and they were significantly tolerated to a certain extent.”
The attorney-general argued that it is logical to conclude that Buhari protected human rights, owing to how the president “accommodated and tolerated the excesses of the #EndSARS protesters”.

“I think it is only logical for one to conveniently, logically and justifiably conclude that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has shown greater zeal in terms of protection, and indeed given accommodation to human rights, to the extent of perhaps accommodating the excesses, which ordinarily ought to have been engaged and confronted squarely,” Malami added.
“As far as the human rights record of the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is concerned, the facts speak for itself.
“International commendation; local compliance with the recommendation of the national human rights commission which has been unprecedented; tolerance, and indeed, accommodation of the excesses of the #EndSARS protesters, were all facts that go to establish a point that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has shown greater accommodation of human rights violations.”
Speaking on the decision of the court, unfreezing the account of #EndSARS protesters Malami said the decision to comply with the court order or not would not be out of intimidation, adding that the government cannot be intimidated.
Government is not wrong particularly in circumstances that justifies intense investigation. It is the end result of an investigation that can determine whether government is right or wrong as determine by the court on the basis of the facts presented.
“The decision to comply with the court order or not is not a decision that is a product of intimidation; government cannot be intimidated, government cannot in anyway be compromised as far as the exercise of its constitutional powers are concerned but that does not mean the government is perpetually inconsiderate.
“The bottom-line is that the public interest matters most in whatever decision the government arrives at as far as compliance or non-compliance with the orders or judgments of the court are concerned. Intimidation is out of it, threats are out of it, constitutionality is the bottom-line.”

Kingsley Moghalu welcome court order to unfreeze bank accounts of #EndSARS promoters

Prof Kingsley Moghalu has lauds the federal high court in Abuja over the order giving to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to unfreeze the bank accounts of #EndSARS Promoters.
Recalls that the CBN had froze the bank account of 20 Nigeria youths, including 23-year-old undergraduate of Lagos State University (LASU), Rinu Oduala for the role played during the #EndSARS Protests to end police brutality in the country.
Moghalu via a statement released on Thursday said:
STATEMENT: MOGHALU WELCOMES COURT ORDER TO UNFREEZE BANK ACCOUNTS OF #EndSARS PROTESTERS.

  1. I welcome the decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to unfreeze the bank accounts of 20 #EndSARS protesters frozen late last year following youth protests against police brutality.
  2. It is also a positive development that the CBN and the 20 defendants reached an amicable decision to end the legal dispute.
  3. The decision by the court is a victory for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
Citizens of Nigeria, including peaceful #EndSARS protesters, have a constitutional right to protest provided such protest is conducted in a peaceful manner in furtherance of their right to free expression.
  4. These accounts should never have been frozen in the first place. I urge our political leaders and public institutions, without prejudice to the need to maintain public order, to engage peaceful protesters on the substance of their grievances, and to resist the temptation to resort to repressive measures. This is part of what the principles of democracy requires.

STRIKE: Nigerian govt, varsity workers to resume talks Thursday

The Federal Government and the non-teaching staff of Nigerian universities will resume their meeting on Thursday.

The meeting between the two parties held earlier this month was inconclusive.

But the federal government and the workers who came together under the aegis of Joint Action Committee on Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions agreed to set up a committee to resolve the dispute over Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the N40billion earned allowances.

The Deputy Director (Press) in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Charles Akpan, who disclosed this in a statement, said the meeting would hold at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

The workers are challenging the inconsistencies in the implementation of the IPPIS, non-payment of arrears of national minimum wage, delay in the renegotiation of FG/NASU and SSANU 2009 agreement and non-payment of retirement benefits of former staff of the universities, among others.

Senate condemns negotiation with bandits, calls for total ban on open grazing

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday frowned at state governors in the North-West negotiating with bandits, insisting that such negotiation is fuelling banditry in the country.

The lawmakers also called on the Federal Government to direct states on the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP), which is aimed at establishing ranches and eliminating open grazing.

The senators made the submissions on Wednesday while debating a motion brought by the Deputy Senate Leader, Ajayi Boroffice, on the growing insecurity in all parts of the country.

While calling for the operation of ranches as provided for in the NLTP, the Senate said the plan would prevent farmer-herder conflicts and activate highly productive livestock sector in Nigeria.

The lawmakers further lamented the invasion of the country by armed herdsmen from foreign countries, urging the Federal Government to adequately equip the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigerian Customs Service to police and monitor the borders.

Contributing to the debate, the senators berated the governors negotiating with bandits, while also insisting that seeking amnesty for the repentant bandits would spell doom for the country.

The senators stated this while reacting to Senator Sahabi Yau from Zamfara State, who had said in his submission, that he supported his governor for negotiating with bandits.

He said: “ I support my governor for seeking amnesty for repentant bandits. The Zamfara governor is by so doing, protecting the lives of his people.”

However, the Senator representing Kaduna Central, Uba Sani, drew the attention of his colleagues to the constant attacks of the state by bandits expecting Governor Nasir el-Rufai to also negotiate with them.

According to him, the refusal of the governor to negotiate with the criminals when neighbouring states were already doing so, was the cause of constant killings in the state, in recent times.

Sani said: “The bandits have been attacking our communities on a daily basis.

“We have been able to liaise with Nigerian forces, they expressed a lot of frustration on the way neighbouring states have been managing the crisis.

“Our position is that some neighbouring states in recent times have been negotiating with the criminals, which on a daily basis kill our own people, destroy our communities, murder our children.

Unfortunately, whenever the Air Force wants to attack them through bombardment, they move on to neighbouring states, some state governors will sit down with them, winning and dinning with them.

“I don’t know why we are compensating the bandits. We must work together as a team if we want to succeed on this issue of security because as far as I’m concerned, you cannot compensate criminals.

“As far as we are concerned these people are criminals, we have to be very careful because we cannot politicise the issue of insecurity.

“A lot people are grandstanding, the issue of insecurity is not politics and we must be careful.

In his own submission, Senator Chukwuka Utazi said: “Governors that are negotiating with criminals and bandits are setting a dangerous precedent. We have to look at it seriously and advise them against it.”

Supporting the call for total ban on open grazing, Senator Tolu Odebiyi noted that the ban would prevent incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen.

He said: “I completely support a total ban on open grazing and its replacement with ranching system which is a modern practice all over the World.

We have a national crisis on our hands. It is a national crisis that has been devoid of leadership politically and morally.

“We must see it the way it is. Between May 2017 and May 2020, there have been 624 attacks, 2,239 killed, 393 wounded, 253 kidnapped, 16 raped and 752 homes destroyed.

“That is an analysis done by a research firm in Brussels on what is happening in this country.

“I have listened and for us to be saying that they (bandits/herders) are not Nigerians, that is an indictment on our leadership.

That people are coming into this country and they are maiming our people, killing our people, they are raping our people and these are the same security people that we are now going to promote to be ambassadors of this country.

“It is an indictment and it is not acceptable. I represent a community that borders some countries, I went there over the weekend and the whole place has been destroyed by all these herdsmen.

People’s earnings, people’s lives have been ruined. It is upsetting and we must rise. This country is on a precipice of a civil war.”

While rounding off the debate, Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, said: “The Senate urges the Federal Government to direct the state governments, to implement the National Livestock Transformation Plan which is a modern scheme designed to eliminate trans-humans movement in order to prevent farmer-herder conflicts and activate highly productive livestock sector in Nigeria.”

He also called on politicians against ethnicising the spate of insecurity in the country, warning that doing so was capable of inciting widespread bloodshed among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria.

Speaking further, Lawan emphasised the need for more funding to the military to enable it tackle the spate of widespread insecurity in several states across the geo-political zones, as a result of the growing activities of Boko Haram, bandits and kidnappers.

He said: “There’s no better investment today in Nigerian by government, than making more resources available to our security agencies because security is the major thing that government can do to change the lives of the people for the better.

So, we will continue to discuss and debate it here. This will not be the last, but the tone, the issue, the main theme should change. That maybe by the time we discuss this kind of thing here again, it should be that we have made a shift; that we have moved positively, that we are trying to only make it better.

I can end Boko Haram without govt support –Sunday Igboho

Yoruba rights activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho has declared that he has what it takes to put an end to Nigeria’s decade-long insurgency problem without the government’s support.

“That which I will use in the fight against Boko Haram, I have it already,” Sunday Igboho said.

He said this in a 2020 video interview which resurfaced after the former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, called on the Federal Government to invite Igboho to help drive Boko Haram terrorists out of the Sambisa forest.

Mr Sani said the activist should be invited to help put an end to the terror group in Borno State.

In the 2020 interview, Igboho was quoted as saying that the Western Nigeria Security Network, also known as Amotekun, should be independent.

He said: “These herders we are fighting against, they are not after money, they only get orders from their leaders. Yoruba freedom fighters should not be kept under Governors, these governors will turn the fight against insecurity to business.

Oyo State governor is of the Peoples Democratic Party, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, and Lagos state governors are all of the All Progressives Congress and you want our own PDP governor here to support them, how will there be unity?

“And all the powers in this country belong to someone who is a Hausa-Fulani man. They established Amotekun and put it under a governor, the same governor that will request money from the federal authority.

Yoruba youths only if we can be willing to fight. I am not asking for anything from anybody, what I will use in the fight against Boko Haram, I have it.

“I don’t need it from a governor because a governor will try to make money from it. He will claim he has spent a certain amount on Amotekun and make a profit from it. This will not result in something good.

“When they wanted to start Oodua Peoples Congress, was it under any governor? Why is Amotekun meant to fight insecurity in the South-West, under the police?

That’s rubbish; these people are not ready to fight for the Yorubas, they are simply looking for what to take from who.”

Police arrests man for alleged gang-rape of teenager in Benue

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one suspect for alleged gang-rape of a teenager in Obi local government area of the state.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Catherine Anene, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Makurdi on Tuesday, said the girl was gang-raped on January 24 at Itakpa-Ito in the local government area.

She said the suspect and three others conspired and defiled the girl while on her way back from the river, made videos of the act, and posted same on social media.

Anene said: “She was on her way to visit her sister at Itakpa-Ito and four men intercepted her on the way, dragged her to a room and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.

They made a video of their act and shared it on social media for public viewing.

“The victim was rushed to the hospital where she received treatment and has been discharged.

“One of the suspects has been arrested by the police and efforts are being made to arrest the other suspects at large.

“The state police command will definitely bring perpetrators of such inhuman acts to book.”

Twitter Bans Trump Forever Even If He Runs Again In 2024

Former US President Donald Trump’s Twitter ban will remain forever, even if he runs for president again in 2024, a top company official said on Wednesday February 10.
During an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Twitter’s chief financial officer, Ned Segal, was asked if the platform would restore Trump’s account if he ran again and was elected president.
In his reply, Segal said the ban is permanent, even if he ever becomes president again.

“The way our policies work, when you’re removed from the platform, you’re removed from the platform whether you’re a commentator, you’re a CFO or you are a former or current public official,” Segal said.

“Our policies are designed to make sure that people are not inciting violence, and if anybody does that, we would have to remove them from the service and our policies don’t allow people to come back.”
“So, no?,” Squawk Box host Rebecca Quick pressed.
“He was removed when he was president, and there’d be no difference for anybody who [was] a public official once they’ve been removed from the service,” Segal responded.
Mr. Segal also confirmed that the rules would apply to any public official that was banned from the service for similar reasons to Mr. Trump.

The republican politician was banned from Twitter last month following the deadly Jan. 6 riots that interrupted Congress’ certification of President Biden’s electoral college win.

Social media restrictions have been lifted– Ugandan government

The Ugandan government has announced the full restoration of internet and social media services apart from access to Facebook.

“We apologise for the inconveniences caused, but it was for the security of our country,” Peter Ogwang, State Minister for ICT and National Guidance, tweeted.

He added: “Let’s be constructive, not destructive consumers/users of social media.”

The services were severely restricted on the eve of 14 January election.

President Yoweri Museveni at the time accused Facebook of being arrogant and biased after the social media platform removed accounts linked to the ruling party National Resistance Movement (NRM).

On Wednesday the tech platform again announced it had removed a new batch of more than 200 accounts linked to NRM.

The company alleged that the accounts were seeking to spread misinformation and to manipulate public debate ahead of the highly contested January poll.

Facebook said the accounts based in Uganda, targeted domestic audiences and relied on fake and duplicate accounts in order to make posts appear more popular than they actually were.

The head of Facebook’s Global Threat Disruption, David Agranovich, said their investigation found evidence linking fake accounts directly to Uganda’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.

A further 139 Instagram accounts were also removed.

The accounts mostly shared content in support of President Museveni and NRM.

His closest challenger in the polls was musician turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine who was four years old when Mr Museveni seized power in 1986 after waging a guerrilla war.

Mr Museveni secured a sixth term in the election but Bobi Wine is challenging the results in court alleging that there was widespread fraud.

Reasons NIN is so important in Nigeria

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, recently disclosed that the federal government has begun the process of replacing the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and other national database systems with the National Identity Number (NIN).

Aside from BVN, there are other key data systems in Nigeria.

Some of these are the Drivers Licence, issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and the International Passport Number.

Others include professional licences like medical practice licence, pharmacology, nursing licence, teachers’ registration licence and engineering licence, among others.

According to the minister, his office was leading the initiative.

And the key reason for the migration of all databases to NIN is the fact that NIN is backed by law.

He said there is the need to replace BVN with NIN because the BVN is a bank policy but NIN is a law.

Because it has been established by law, the strength of the law everywhere is higher than a policy made by an institution.

The BVN was a policy directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that all customers of commercial banks must be identified through a verifiable number system.

Just like BVN and other data systems, there are limitations: you must be eligible to be captured in one or all these databases, but the NIN is not so, as long as you are a Nigerian or living in Nigeria.

For instance, BVN is only for those with active bank accounts, International Passport is often done by people who may have the need or opportunity to travel abroad, drivers licence works for those who have attained the 18-year for driving and are duly certified and fit for driving, while TIN is for those who are in the working-age and eligible to pay tax – Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

Countries in Asia, Europe and even the United States practice a central national identity system that tracks residents in a country.

The NIMC’s database is the primary one in the country that every institution should make reference to.

Another reason for prioritising NIMC is due to the insecurity issues in Nigeria.

Pantami said, with NIMC’s database, the level of security is 99.9 percent which is further guaranteed by the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation to guarantee safety of all data collected in the country.

Currently, NIN has been harmonised with the BVN of customers by most of the banks, the process is still on to integrate SIM cards with NIN by the telecommunication companies.

The NIN has been integrated as a central identity number in new international passports.

In December, FRSC rolled out its enforcement of NIN first before drivers licence, meaning you cannot get a new licence and renew one if you have no NIN.
