How Sowore Was Shot By CSP Altine Daniel During Protest Against Insecurity In Abuja.

More Facts have emerged as to how human rights activist and Convener of RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female police officer, CSP Altine Daniel.
Sowore was shot at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

Sowore arrived at the fountain alongside few other protesters but they were locked out by armed policemen who had cordoned off the area.

Meanwhile, a group of protesters led by Jaye Gaskia were already inside the arena.

It was learnt that the police locked the main gate upon sighting Sowore and his group, denying them access.

The activist, while making enquiry from the police on why he was locked out, was told that the order was from the Commisioner of Police.

The activist swiftly called the Commissioner of Police but he denied giving such an order.

It was at this point the female officer mobilised some officers and drove close to Sowore and his group, before shooting at him.

Sowore, who was holding an iron net put around the fountain screamed in pain and went down. Blood gushed out of the wound.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, his lawyer, Abubakar Marshal who was also at the protest described the shooting of unarmed protesters as callous, wicked and unwarranted.

Marshal said, “Comrade gathered at Unity Fountain this morning in furtherance of the protest slated for today. When we got to the Unity Fountain, we discovered that the gate had been locked and we inquired from the policemen on the ground. We were informed that there was an order from the Commissioner of Police, FCT to lock the gate.

“We put a call to the Commissioner of Police and he denied that he gave such an order and he promised to order his men to open the gate in the next two minutes so that we could have access to the fountain, a public utility.

“As soon as we dropped the call, a detachment from the FCT police command, led by one CPS Altine Hyelhira Daniel, came down from the vehicle and opened fire on the protesters standing outside the fountain.

“There was no communication, altercation or disagreement. No form of provocation of any sort, she just alighted from the vehicle and opened fire, along with her men.”

Femi Adeyeye, Publicity Secretary of the African Action Congress (AAC), who was also an eyewitness, said, “As soon as we gathered at the protest ground the gates were locked on the orders of the Commissoner of Police, FCT, Bala Ciroma.”

“Sowore alongside other comrades was addressing the illegality, when another detachment of armed-to-the-teeth policemen led by CSP Altine arrived at the scene and without recourse to any iota of civilisation or civil engagement, shot at Omoyele Sowore and dispersed the protesters violently.”

As at the time of filing this report, doctors were still battling to save his life.

Gulak’s murder an attempt to instigate northerners against Igbos – Akeredolu

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, says the murder of Ahmed Gulak, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is an attempt to create discord between northerners and south-easterners.

Gulak, a former aide of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan was shot dead on Sunday while on his way to the airport in Owerri, Imo state.

The Ondo state governor described his killing as “one murder too many”.

Akeredolu, in a statement, described the perpetrators as enemies of the country whose objective is to mislead, confuse and destroy.

He called on the south-east governors to brace up and confront the current security challenges in the region.

The statement reads: “The news of the death of an APC chieftain and former Special Adviser on Political Matters in the last Administration, Ahmed Gulak, in Owerri, Imo State, this morning, is very shocking and disturbing. The details of the tragic incident remain sketchy. A press statement credited to the Imo State Police Command claimed that some bandits were responsible for the gruesome murder of a man who was a visitor to the State. This is unacceptable.

“This is one murder too many. It is senseless and wicked. The perpetrators of this heinous act are enemies of this country. This contrivance is meant to mislead, confuse and destroy. It bears the unmistakable, despicable imprints of fifth columnists bent on setting the country on the path of conflagration. These criminals must not be allowed to succeed.

We want to use this medium to express our solidarity with our brother Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma. We admonish him and other Governors in the South Eastern States to brace up, and confront the current security challenge to put an end to the bloodbath in the land. The enemies of the people always employ the weapon of fear to create disaffection in the polity.

This cowardly act is calculated to instigate Nigerians against each other, particularly Northerners, against the Igbo living outside the South East. We must confront the enemies of the people with a view to neutralizing them. This is definitely not the time for political correctness. Banditry should not be allowed to subvert the legitimacy of the current Government at all levels.

“We call on all security agencies to collaborate with a view to unveiling the criminal elements sponsoring and undertaking terrorist acts. they must be punished, severely.”

If Tinubu is interested in the presidential race, let him the contest. I can assure you he will win the election as God had shown me.

“I believe Tinubu will give to Nigeria as God had told me, the genuine merit to rescue the sinking boat of the nation from capsizing.

“The economy will be stable. Wages and salary crisis will soon end. Ethnic problems, inflations and industrial actions will soon come to an end.

“Every problem has an expiry date. I can see the Nigerian workers jubilating. This will materialise if we do the right job by voting for God’s chosen candidate for the 2023 election. That God chosen candidate is Tinubu.

I see a major shakeup in the Presidency but God did not direct me to Buhari. If Tinubu is interested, let him the contest. I see him being crowned. But I need to tell it to his face on how to go about it as God had directed me to him.”

“That is, those who are dispassionate and fair-minded, not beclouded by political partisanship and undue cynicism.

“Some people claim: ‘We don’t see what they are doing. We don’t hear about it.’

Buhari’s refusal to appoint Igbo Army Chief shows he doesn’t believe in one Nigeria – HURIWA

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has tackled President Muhammadu for once again appointing a northerner as the Chief of Army Staff.

National Coordinator of HURIWA, Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement on Thursday, said the President’s refusal to appoint an Army Chief from the South-Eastern region shows that he does not believe in the unity of the country.

Buhari, on Thursday appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff following the tragic death of the former COAS, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, in a plane crash last Friday.

Attahiru, his predecessor Buratai and successor Yakubu are all from Northern Nigeria.

Reacting to the latest appointment of a new COAS, HURIWA in a statement titled, ‘New Army Chief: We Are No Longer Shocked By Buhari’s Primitive Nepotism’, criticised President Buhari for not distributing his appointments across all the socio-ethnic interests in the country.

The statement read in part; “The shameless, nepotistic decision of President Buhari to continue in the illegal and unconstitutional abuses of appointing only Hausa/Fulani citizens into juicy Internal Security positions in breach of the Nigerian Constitutional provision of Federal Character is despicable, reprehensible and totally toxic.”

The group accused Buhari of violating his constitutional oath of office by his aversion to respect the Federal Character principle.

Buhari’s refusal to appoint an officer from the South-East of Nigeria as the Army Chief of Staff even when he is the most senior of the Major Generals further solidify his notoriety as someone who does not believe in one Nigeria,” HURIWA stated

Meanwhile, Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, had criticised the President for appointing four service chiefs and an acting Inspector General of Police without any of the five appointees being of Igbo extraction.

Ohanaeze had said the injustice of the Federal Government under the leadership of Buhari was responsible for the growing agitations and insecurity in the South-East.

NBC suspends license of Ahmed Isah’s Human Rights radio

The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC has suspended the license of Human Rights Radio for recurring unprofessional conduct.

NBC made the announcement in a statement issued on Thursday after the commission met with the founder/owner Ahmed Isah, in Abuja.

Isah, who is also the host of Berekete Family Show, a programme on the radio station, had been caught in a BBC documentary assaulting an interviewee.

Also, an old video which surfaced yesterday showed him assaulting another person for not heeding to his instruction.

The Ordinary President as he is fondly called, was at the meeting with NBC yesterday to explain the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident at his radio station.

In a statement on Thursday, the regulatory body said it reviewed the events and noted the unreserved apologies and regrets expressed by the broadcaster.

The Commission states, however, that the action of the broadcaster is in clear violations of the Broadcasting Code and a betrayal of the confidence reposed on him by the people and Government of Nigeria on whose behalf he holds the radio license in trust.

“Section 0.1.1.2.1 of the Broadcasting Code provides in the Social Objectives of Broadcasting that Broadcasting shall – ‘promote generally accepted social values and norms, especially civic and social responsibilities; and encourage respect for the dignity of man’.

It also provides that broadcasting organisations shall recognize that they exercise freedom of expression as agents of society, not for any personal or sectional rights, privileges and needs of their own or of their proprietors, relatives, friends or supporters.

“It is important to state that the Commission has over the years, advised, cautioned, warned and fined the station over repeated cases of outright abuse, denigrating remarks, intimidation and flagrant abuse of ethics of fairness, balance and fair hearing on the station. It is also on record that the Commission had conducted several training and retraining programmes for the station and the host of the Brekete family programme especially.

The Commission has therefore in line with the sanction provisions in 15.5.2 of the Broadcasting Code, ordered the suspension of license of the broadcaster until the broadcaster commits to ethical and professional broadcasting. The suspension order is effective Monday the 31st of May 2021, at 12.00am.

“The order shall last 30 days during which it is expected that the broadcaster will put its house in order and attune itself to responsive, professional and responsible broadcasting. It shall also pay a recommencement fee as provided for in section 15.5.1 of the Broadcasting Code at the end of the suspension period.

The NBC appreciates the popularity of the station and the fact that it has in many cases tuned its programming to the yearnings of the people. The Commission however has a sacred duty to promote decency, professionalism and respect for the dignity of all citizens by all Broadcasters in Nigeria,” the statement read.

Groups mobilise for national protest against insecurity, poverty

Civil Society organisations under the aegis of The Peoples Alternative Political Movement (TPAP-M) are planning a nationwide campaign against insecurity and poverty in Nigeria on May 31.

TPAP-M stated that the campaign to commence on the last day of May is aimed at asking critical questions which the political elite in the country must provide answers to.

It also said the protest is basically to put a stop to the security crises ravaging the country and impoverishment bedevilling Nigerian citizens, thereby asking people and organisations to join in the planned demonstration that will put an end to an avalanche of problems in the country.

The group made this disclosure in a statement made available on Wednesday.

It said, “We are a very broad, diverse, and united alliance of social forces, including the The Peoples Alternative Political Movement (TPAP-M) – and her affiliates; the Labour Movement (organised trade unions); the Alliance On Surviving COVID 19 And Beyond (ASCAB) and her affiliates; Joint Action Front (JAF) and her affiliates; Coalition Of Northern Groups (CNG) and her affiliates; Green Alliance Nigeria (GAN) and her affiliates; CONGOS – Edo; North East Development Association; among several others.

“We have all come together at this critical juncture in our history, when due to the historical incompetence and negligence of the ruling class and their various political regimes, over the past few decades, have brought our nation to the brink of a major catastrophic existential crisis, threatening the precipitous collapse of our country and the annihilation of our people across the country.

“We are today as a nation and people confronted with the twin crises of insecurity and mass poverty and misery, both of which have reached pandemic proportions. No single part of the country is safe and secure.

“It is not a coincidence that mass poverty; mass misery; joblessness; collapse of means of livelihood, systems and opportunities; homelessness; levels of collapse of basic social services in education, health, housing, etc.; rising energy costs – fuel and electricity; and intensifying levels, scope, and degree of violent crimes and insecurity; are currently at their highest levels, not only in living memory, but also in our history.

This is why we have come together to collectively take our destiny into our owns, to Stand Up, Stand Firm, and Shout Out that ‘Enough Is Enough.’”

With the commencement of the campaign, the group asked the Nigerian government to call for meetings involving the Nigeria Police Council and the National Economic Council, among other demands made to address the current situations in the country.

“The National Day Of Action Against Insecurity And Mass Poverty, as the beginning of a peoples campaign, is thus being called not only to make demands on the state, the current regime, and the inept and congenitally corrupt ruling class.

It is also being called to enable the working peoples and the labouring masses of our country, impoverished by the anti-people policies and governance of this ruling class, and victims of its incompetence and governance failure, who bear the brunt of the consequences of insecurity; to come together, agitate, make their demands, and take their place on the pedestal of history, and assert our right to live in dignity, comfort, free from fear and want, and able to act in our own interests.

“Towards this end, the Campaign Against Insecurity And Mass Poverty, beginning with the National Day Of Action makes the following demands on the state, the regime, and the ruling class; and insists that the demands be met:

“Immediate convening of the Nigeria Police Council to discuss the security challenges facing the country and adopt a pro-people policing plan, to secure the lives and properties and livelihoods of all citizens and residents;

“The Policing Plan must involve the people and their representatives and must guarantee the right of self-defence of communities, such the communities and neighborhoods are enabled to establish Community Self Defence Committees, drawn from residents of each community and neighborhood, and the management of which must include representatives of all stakeholders and residents in the given communities and neighborhoods;

“We further demand the immediate convening of the meeting of the National Economic Council to deliberate on the economic crisis facing the country and our people, and the initiation of a broad, inclusive, multi stakeholder process to review all subsisting economic policies and the policy environment on the economy, with a view to terminating and replacing all anti people economic policies;

“We demand that the pro-people policing plan, must include mechanisms to ensure that this raging violence is nipped in the bud, that perpetrators and perpetuators, are arrested and prosecuted, and that victims are compensated by the state;

“We demand a total upgrade of our policing agencies; by increasing the personnel strength, equipping and training them and adequate provision for their welfare.

“We demand an immediate end to the arbitrary sacking of workers across the country; and demand immediate compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act, by all employers of labour in public and private sectors; We demand that all outstanding wages and allowances owed to workers be paid, and reject the arbitrary practice of state governments in reducing the wages, and allowances of workers, and in reducing and refusing to pay the pensions and gratuities of retired workers;

“We reject any plan to further hike energy costs – in price of fuel and electricity tariff; as these costs are not only already at unbearable levels, but also because these prices hikes are the major contributants to the rising and unbearable costs of living, expressed in rising inflation.

“To enforce these demands and ensure that they are met by the state, we are launching a campaign, commencing with a National Day Of Action on Monday, 31st May, 2021,” the statement further read.

TPAP-M called on Nigerians in the country to join the protest.

“We urge all Nigerians, every citizen and resident, the working peoples and the labouring masses, to commence preparations for this campaign and the national day of action; and to organise and mobilise towards its success.

“The statement above is to be endorsed by organisations that support the Campaign Against Insecurity and the Proposed National Day of Action. Please if you support the statement send the name of your organisation to this email; tpapsnigeria@gmail.com; so that it can be added to the finalised document.

“Organise Now! Mobilise Now!! Act Now!” the statement added.

Senate to consider proposal for creation of Sharia Courts in South-West

A group known as the Muslim Congress has submitted a memo to the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, proposing the implementation of Sharia in the southwest region.

The Islamic religious law is implemented in Muslim-majority states in the Northern region, despite the constitutional provision that states be secular.

Sharia is alien to the southwest region which has an almost equal population of Christian adherents and Muslims.

The Senate commenced its zonal public hearings on constitutional amendments across the country on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, months after soliciting suggestions from the public.

While presenting its memo at the Lagos hearing on Wednesday, The Muslim Congress said it wants Sharia implemented in the Yoruba-speaking southwest to cater to its Muslim population.

TMC representative, Abdulganihu Bamidele said: “We want to partner for the creation of Sharia courts in the southwest because of our population of Muslims.”

The faith-based organisation also proposed amendments to the constitution focusing on gender equality, local government autonomy, state and community policing, and judicial and legislative autonomy.

Dozens of other organisations and individuals also presented their memos at the public hearing on Wednesday, with the most common topics revolving around gender equality, restructuring, and devolution of power from the Federal Government to the State and Local Governments.

Senator representing Lagos Central, Oluremi Tinubu, who chaired the public hearing, said the Senate will consider all the public submissions to create the perfect document to address everyone’s concerns.

Southern, Northern Kaduna agree to split into two new states

Christians, Non-Hausa/Fulani from the Southern part of Kaduna and their counterpart Muslim Hausa/Fulani dominated part of Northern Kaduna, have agreed for the split of Kaduna State into two new states.

Speaking during the presentation and defense of their memos at the Senate ad-hoc Committee and the House of Reps Special Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution at the Hassan Katsina House on Wednesday, both parties that have been engaged in infamous inter-ethnic and religious clashes for decades, said creating new states from the present Kaduna State will go a long way at solving the bloody violence that seemed to defy solution.

President of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), Hon. Jonathan Asake, who defended the memo of Southern Kaduna people said: “The wish of Southern Kaduna is to have a brand new constitution, not an amended one.

“But in the absence of that, we are here to make our inputs as a people who have suffered suppression and oppression for a long time.

“Southern Kaduna is made up of 67 ethnic nationalities spread in 13 of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kaduna state. It has a landmass of 26,000kmsq with an estimated population of 5.1 million. We are endowed with an educated population and with abundant natural resources.

“Our land size is greater than that of Kano state which has a landmass of 20,000kmsq. Yet Kano is a state of its own with 44 LGAs. Our population is greater than 21 other states of the federation,” he went on. “We are demanding for the amendment of the provision of section 8 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which makes it almost an impossible task for the creation of a new state.

“We have been demanding for a state of our own for over thirty years and Gurara state was among the 18 states proposed in the 2014 Confab report.

We are demanding for the creation of the Gurara state after the amendment. This will help in solving the incessant conflicts between our people and the other divide”.

SOKAPU also asked for the removal of the Land Use Act from the Constitution and its amendment as a law, so that communities and families can have larger control of the ancestral lands.

“We stand by all the 2014 confab report which had captured most of our demands.”

In the same vein, the Northern part of Kaduna State, under the aegis of Kaduna Development Elders Initiatives submitted a memo signed by the Senators Representing Kaduna North Senatorial Zone, Sen. Sulieman Abdu Kwari; the Senator Representing Kaduna Central Senatorial zone, Senator Uba Sani; all the House of Reps members from the Northern Part of Kaduna; all members of Kaduna state house of Assembly from the northern part of Kaduna their Chairmen of LGAs and Councillors.

Defending the memo of the group, Abdulkadir Ahmed said, “we are canvassing for the creation of New Kaduna state from the present Kaduna state and we want the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria amended to make this possible.

“Kaduna South has been complaining of marginalisation ever since, even though Chiefdoms have been given to them and they occupy 60% of the workforce of Kaduna state.

“Let the state be split and if they are asking for Gurara state, let them have it.

“This will solve all the crises we have been having in this state.

“On our part, we are asking for the creation of ‘New Kaduna State’, which will include Kaduna North and Kaduna Central Senatorial zones.

“But there should be a referendum for each section of the state to decide on where it wants to belong.”

Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who declared the meeting open, also asked for true Federalism, State Police and Financial Autonomy to Local Government Councils.

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Gaiya from Kano State, in his opening remarks assured all that each of the memos will be well looked into and submitted to the National Assembly for further actions.

The Presidency says President Muhammadu Buhari did not attend the late Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru’s burial because he did not want to obstruct the free flow of traffic in the Federal Capital Territory.

Presidential aide, Garba Shehu made this known during an interview on Arise TV.

Buhari and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo failed to attend the funeral of Attahiru and six other senior military officers who died in a plane crash in Kaduna last Friday.

Many Nigerians questioned the president’s absence at the funeral rites of one of his service chiefs who died while serving the country.

But Shehu, who spoke in defense of Buhari said, “I was in Europe myself on assignment, and I have not spoken to the president on this but let me give you just one example: The president is somebody who is so concerned about the safety and wellbeing of ordinary Nigerians on the streets.

“Do you know why he now prays his Jumaat in the State House and doesn’t go to the national mosque? Because he doesn’t like this idea of closing roads, security men molesting people on the road for the president to have the right of way.

“these are small things for many people, but they are important for President Muhammadu Buhari. So, it is a mourning situation, and the president didn’t want to take away attention from that.”
