Wole Soyinka backs Biafra, Oduduwa Republics’ agitators, says it’s their right to secede

Nobel laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, has said those calling for the sovereign nations of Biafra and Oduduwa have rights as free citizens to call for secession.

In a statement, the professor criticised the use of force against the agitators of self-determination, insisting it is the responsibility of the leadership to persuade them.

“It is time to think outside the box. That many, in so doing, find no landing place except dissolution, is not a crime. It is not peculiar to any peoples, and is embedded in the ongoing history of many, and not only on this continent.

It is their natural right as free citizens, not slaves of habit and indoctrination. Where disillusion rides high, sentiment tumbles earthwards, and the only question becomes: what can be salvaged? It thus remains the responsibility of leadership to persuade them, through both discourse and remedial action, that there are other options. Attempted bullying is not a language of discourse, nor the facile ploy of tarring all birds with the same feather,” he said.

While speaking on President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement about the genocidal threat, Soyinka said while he was not in support of those killing and destroying government’s properties, the President’s statement to ‘deal with them in the language they understand’ was wrong and ‘tragically untimely.’

“I hold no brief for those who resort to burning down police stations, slaughter their occupants simply for the crime of earning a measly monthly pittance, torch electoral offices, assassinate politicians in calculated effort to set sections of the country against others in the promotion of their own political goals.

“These are largely nihilists, psychopaths and/or criminal lords, soul mates of Boko Haram, ISWAP, Da’esh and company, not to be confused with genuine liberators. All over the world, throughout history, elections are denounced, boycotted, and generally delegitimized without recourse to wanton butchery.

When, however, a Head of State threatens to ‘shock’ civilian dissidents, to ‘deal with them in the language they understand’, and in a context that conveniently brackets opposition to governance with any bloodthirsting enemies of state, we have to call attention to the precedent language of such a national leader under even more provocative, nation disintegrative circumstances. What a pity, and what a tragic setting, to discover that this language was accessible all the time to President Buhari, where and when it truly mattered, when it would have been not only appropriate, but deserved and mandatory!

When Benue was first massively brought under siege, with the massacre of innocent citizens, the destruction of farms, mass displacement followed by alien occupation, Buhari’s language – both as utterance and as what is known as ‘body language’ – was of a totally different temper. It was diffident, conciliatory, even apologetic.

“After much internal pressure, he eventually visited the scene of slaughter. His language? Learn to live peacefully with your neighbours. The expected language, rationally and legitimately applied to the aggressors, was exactly what we now hear – ‘I shall shock you. I shall deal with you in the language you understand,’” he said.

FG summons UK, US, other envoys for condemning Twitter ban

The Federal Government has summoned the envoys of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and the European Union in Nigeria over their recent comments condemning the suspension of microblogging site, Twitter in the West African country.

This was made known in an invitation issued to pressmen on Monday morning by Kimiebi Ebienfa of the Crisis Monitoring and Public Communications Division of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“I am directed to inform that following the recent ban on Twitter by the Federal Government and Press Statement issued by some Heads of Diplomatic Missions Accredited to Nigeria on the subject matter, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Geoffrey Onyeama has invited the affected Ambassadors to a meeting today at 12 noon.

The venue is Minister’s Conference Room, 8th Floor.

“You are hereby invited to cover the meeting. Thanks for your usual cooperation,” the invite read.

In a joint statement on Saturday, Canada, EU, UK, US, and the Republic of Ireland expressed disappointment over the Nigerian government’s suspension of Twitter.

The statement was titled, ‘Joint Statement From The Diplomatic Missions Of Canada, The European Union (Delegation To Nigeria), The Republic Of Ireland, The United Kingdom And The United States Of America’.

It read; “The diplomatic missions of Canada, the European Union (Delegation to Nigeria), the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America convey our disappointment over the Government of Nigeria’s announcement suspending #Twitter and proposing registration requirements for other social media.

“We strongly support the fundamental human right of free expression and access to information as a pillar of democracy in Nigeria as around the world and these rights apply online as well as offline.

“Banning systems of expression is not the answer. These measures inhibit access to information and commerce at precisely the moment when Nigeria needs to foster inclusive dialogue and expression of opinions, as well as share vital information in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The path to a more secure Nigeria lies in more, not less, communication to accompany the concerted efforts of Nigeria’s citizens in fulsome dialogue toward unity, peace and prosperity.

“As Nigeria’s partners, we stand ready to assist in achieving these goals.”

Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Saturday, ordered the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation to prosecute offenders contravening the government’s Twitter ban.

DSS operatives storm Adoration Ministry Enugu, summon Fr. Mbaka to Abuja

Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, have summoned Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, to Abuja for questioning.

According to SaharaReporters, the operatives visited the church to drop the letter of invitation but they didn’t meet the cleric at the church premises.

Mbaka has attracted attention lately with his criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.

Reacting to the summon in a video obtained by SaharaReporters, Mbaka said, “I got a call that the DSS people from Abuja came here (Enugu) with a letter of invitation to Abuja. Over what? What I cannot understand is that the mother church in Nigeria should be “cowed down” to lilliputian.

“The church is a lion and lamb. The bible says if the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do. Every priest is a prophet and a king. We must protect the sheep. In this time, when killings are every day story, when there is hunger everywhere, people do not have hope again. The only hope I have is God. Anybody who will stop people from worshipping here will regret it.

“I am the servant here. They don’t understand history. I spoke against Abacha. I went to Minna to tell Babangida what was wrong in his time. I spoke to Obasanjo face to face. I perform under the anointing of the Holy Spirit. I ministered to the late President Yaradua. I am being used by a higher being called the Holy Spirit.

If they are attacking me here and there, no wahala (no problem). The Bible says if God is for us, who can be against us? Only God can be God. I heard the security people did not accept the letter. They asked them to come on Monday to give me the letter. If they know the anointing here is too hot for them, let them change. I will not keep quiet.”

Nigerians still using Twitter will know the law they’re violating when charged to court – AGF Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has said that violators of the Twitter ban will become aware of the law they are breaking when charged to court.

Recall that Malami, on Saturday, ordered the prosecution of Nigerians defying the government’s ban on Twitter, but did not state the specify law that is being violated.

When asked which law he intends to invoke to prosecute alleged offenders, the AGF, who spoke through his media aide, Umar Gwandu, told Premium Times that “the alleged violators would get to know in court”.

He added; “We will invite journalists at the time of prosecution, and they will know which laws are used to prosecute. The point is Twitter has been banned. Anybody should not try to use Twitter.

At the time we are gathering them and assembling them in court, they will get to know which law they are violating. The government has banned Twitter and anybody who uses it will be penalised. The point is they violated the ban. They are violating the federal government laws”.

Bandits’ attack a trial from Allah – Kebbi Governor

Kebbi state governor, Atiku Bagudu, has condoled the people of Gaya community in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area over the recent attack by bandits.

He enjoined the people to take the carnage as an act of Allah.

A statement released by his spokesperson, Yahaya Sarki on Sunday, said the governor condoled with the people when he visited the affected community, and expressed regret at the attack.

Bagudu promised to take more pungent measures to further safeguard the lives and properties of the citizenry, assuring immediate restoration of peace and unity and revamping socio-economic activities, especially farming in the area.

He said, “It is really unfortunate that these obnoxious and deadly attacks occurred after the area had been quiet and peaceful.

“We should not allow this vicious cycle to continue and as such all hands must be on deck to provide a plausible solution to the problem.

“Security challenges are not peculiar to Nigeria as they occur everywhere. We must be fast and proactive for peace to return.”

The governor admonished the people to regard the tragic incident as an act of the Almighty Allah that can befall any mortal.

He said: “As mere mortals who believe in faith, both as Muslims and Christians, we should regard this sad development as a trial from the Almighty Allah.

“Also, we should note that passing blame will not solve the problem. What is required is mutual trust and respect for all.

“Certainly, more arms or ammunition will not solve the problem, but respect, support and fervent prayers will do.”

Bagudu again said that the state government had the powers to ban Yan Sakai, but it had not done so.

He, however, urged the vigilantes to collaborate with the security agencies, traditional rulers and the various communities to ensure the success of their activities.

While restating the need to offer immediate relief assistance and shelter to the internally displaced persons, Bagudu cautioned against spreading rumours and fake news.

He also said that the loss of lives was collective and called for more patience, prayers, vigilance and mutual assistance in order to shame the detractors.

Twitter ban is a violation of our human rights – Desmond Elliot

Nigerian actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot, has reacted to the Federal Government’s decision to ban Twitter’s operations in Nigeria.

On Friday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the indefinite suspension in a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi.

The statement read in part; “The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

“The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”

In a Twitter thread, Elliot who represents Surulere at the Lagos State House of Assembly called on the federal government to reverse the suspension stating that the ban, ‘no matter the reasons proffered tramples upon our fundamental rights as people.’

He said; “I want to admonish our government to always remember that the people’s right to express themselves freely must not be compromised. This ban, no matter the reasons proffered tramples upon our fundamental rights as people.”

Elliot reminded the government that Nigerian youths trade their wares and advertise their businesses and services via the micro-blogging site.

He added; “In a democratic society like ours, we must weigh the economic and social impact of this ban on the populace — especially our teeming youths and entrepreneurs who depend solely on this platform to carry out their legitimate business.

“In the past, our government have shown the required goodwill to stand on side of the people even when it’s not too convenient for them to do so. I believe that this won’t be an exception. I want to appeal to the government to reconsider this ban in the interest of our people and our country at large.”

ISIS ordered us to kill Boko Haram’s leader – ISWAP confirms Shekau’s death

The Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) has confirmed the death of former Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau.

ISWAP confirmed that Shekau blew himself up after refusing to surrender following the invasion of his hideout on May 19, 2021, Daily Post reports.

This was contained in a message from Abu Mus’ab Habeeb Bin Muhammad Bin Yusuf al-Barnawi, born Habib Yusuf, leader of the terrorists.

According to HumAngle, al-Barnawi, in an address on Friday, described Shekau as “the leader of disobedience and corruption.”

He said Shekau’s fighters rejoiced over his death, adding that the former terrorist leader, who took over after the death of Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf in 2009, was apprehended “in the most humiliating manner.”

Speaking in Hausa, al-Barnawi said: “This was someone who committed unimaginable terrorism. How many has he wasted? How many has he killed? How many has he terrorised? But Allah left him alone and prolonged his life. When it was time, Allah set out brave soldiers after receiving orders from Amirul Muminin [leader of the believers].”

ISWAP, which broke away from Shekau’s Boko Haram faction in 2016, disagreed with the late extremist leader over his excessive use of force, especially on Muslims in areas under his influence.

He stated that the interim leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ordered them to take action on Shekau for deviating and killing “believers.”

ISWAP fighters then took their arms, travelled through the Sahara, went into Shekau’s enclave, and engaged in a gun battle with his followers.

“Shekau preferred to be humiliated in the afterlife than getting humiliated on earth. He killed himself instantly by detonating an explosive,” he said.

Northern group protests in Abuja, demands referendum

A group of women under the aegis of the Amalgamation of Northern Women Associations, on Saturday, demanded a referendum to allow Biafran agitators to chose whether or not to remain in Nigeria.

The coordinator of the group, Hadiza Adamu, spoke on behalf of other members, during a protest in Abuja, on Saturday.

She said, “Nigerian History has shown that women carry the heavy burden of war and acts of insurrections and terrorism. We have gone through it from 1967 to 1971, our men died and left us with the children to cater for out of nothing, other men that survived simply moved on but we never moved on.

The aftermath of the war and the sufferings left lifetime scars in our hearts and on our bodies. It is for this reason that we (have) come together today and say we don’t want another war, another insurrection.

We, therefore, unanimously call on President Muhammadu Buhari as the leader and father of the country; and the leadership of the National Assembly, President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawal; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; to immediately call for a referendum in the country.

“Let people choose to live in peace in Nigeria or leave, any other group or nationality that wants to secede to exercise their rights of self-determination like the South-East has been agitated for decades to be allowed to leave Nigeria peacefully, without resorting to a second civil war.

“Today the Igbo nation has turned the entire South-East to almost a war zone, northerners irrespective of their tribes are no longer safe, states’ infrastructures are no longer safe, service personnel from police to army are not safe, INEC offices and other symbols of democracy in the country are being destroyed on daily basis, our husbands that go to do business in South-East no longer return home safe, our political leaders who travel to the South-East on national assignments are assassinated in broad daylight.”

Twitter ban: The right of Nigerians to freely express themselves must be respected – Sweden warns FG

The Swedish Government have reacted to the suspension slammed on microblogging platform, Twitter by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In a tweet on its official handle, Sweden called on President Muhammadu Buhari to respect ‘freedom of expression.’

It noted that Nigerians have a constitutional right to exercise their freedom of expression and a right to access of information.

The tweet reads, ”Nigerians have a constitutional right to exercise their freedom of expression and a right to access of information.

This must be respected. Safeguarding free, independent media and civic spaces for democratic voices is an important part of Sweden’s #DriveForDemocracy #TwitterBan”

Just a few days after Twitter deleted Buhari’s controversial ‘civil war’ tweet, the federal government suspended Twitter’s operations in a statement on Friday.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said the government was forced to act because of “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Rescind Suspension Of Twitter In Nigeria Or Face Legal Action, SERAP Tells Buhari

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has condemned the “illegal and unconstitutional suspension of Twitter’s Operations in Nigeria,” and called on “the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately rescind the suspension within 48 hours or face legal action.”
The Federal Government today announced that it has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria. This was announced by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi.

But SERAP in a statement by its deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare said: “The suspension of Twitter in Nigeria is a blatant violation of Nigerians’ rights to freedom of expression and access to information. The suspension has the character of collective punishment and is contrary to Nigeria’s international obligations. President Buhari must immediately rescind this unconstitutional suspension. We will see in court if the suspension is not rescinded within 48 hours.”

The statement, read in part: “Suspending Twitter in Nigeria would deny Nigerians’ access to information, and disrupt the free exchange of ideas and the ability of individuals to connect with one another and associate peacefully on matters of shared concern. It would also seriously undermine the ability of Nigerians to promote transparency and accountability in the country, and to participate in their own government.”
“We call on the Nigerian authorities to guarantee the constitutionally and internationally recognized human rights of Nigerians including online. Deletion of President Buhari’s tweets should never be used as a pretext to suppress the civic space and undermine Nigerians’ fundamental human rights.”

We’ve reduced kidnapping, banditry with NIN – Isa Pantami

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, says kidnapping and banditry have reduced since his office introduced the policy compelling Nigerians to obtain a National Identification Number, NIN.

Pantami stated this in Abuja on Thursday, while rendering an account of his stewardship since assuming office, in 2019.

He said; “When I was assigned to supervise the sector on 24, August 2019, unregistered, and partial registered sims were being used to perpetrate crime in the country. Nobody knew the total number of unregistered sims.

Within less than 15 days in the office, we have engaged the NCC as a regulator. We have directed them to carry audit exercise to enable them come up with unregistered and partial registered sims. They came with around 9.4 million which is enough to populate another country. It was the first time we didn’t know the total of unregistered sims in the country.

And we went further to direct NCC, to ensure that by 25th September 2019, that is only one month few days in office, I spent there to ensure that by end of September 2021, no sim that is not registered will be on our network. NCC as a regulator implemented that effectively.

From end of September 2019, to 2020, you will discover that even kidnapping and banditry reduced to the barest minimum. It was a time that hardly can you spend one month or more without hearing about kidnapping.

The more you come up with policies to make the system effective the more criminals will come up with another strategy to compromise the policies.”

Stop renouncing your citizenship – FG pleads with Nigerian youths

The Federal Government has appealed to young Nigerians to stop the trend of renouncing their citizenship in pursuit of greener pasture abroad.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola who made the appeal on Thursday, described it as worrisome and counterproductive.

He expressed concerns at the Ministerial Alignment Meeting of the Presidential Task Force on Deliverables for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of Government.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, the Minister said the Federal government would put up a mechanism in place that would keep young Nigerians busy in productive activities.

He said a committee would be set up in the Ministry with stakeholders to oversee the operations and implementation of the deliverables.

The committee would be chaired by the Director, Planning Research and Statistics (PRS) in the Ministry, Mr. Kabiru Ayuba, with representatives of the four Services under the Ministry and other relevant officers.

IPOB members approach Cardinal Arinze in Rome, ask him to seek Pope’s endorsement of Biafra (Video)

A video making rounds online shows the moment members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, approached Cardinal Francis Arinze and tried to convince him to ask Pope Francis to endorse the actualization of Biafra.

The IPOB members could be seen standing with the Nigerian Cardinal in a building in Rome while making their request.

However, Cardinal Arinze, who is from Anambra state, was not on the same page with them as regards secession.

“It is those who did not see the civil war who are talking ‘Biafra, Biafra’. They have no idea,” Cardinal Arinze told the IPOB members.

The Cardinal added that citizens being separated is “not the mandate Christ gave to the Bishops.”

He encouraged the IPOB members to join politics instead and bring about the change they want to see in Nigeria.

He said: “It is for people like you. You get into politics and work hard with others.”

Nigeria is a land flowing with bitterness and sadness – Obasanjo laments

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described Nigeria as a land flowing with bitterness and sadness.

The two-time Nigerian leader who spoke on Thursday, said bad leadership has prevented the country from achieving its potential.

He made the statement while being presented with a book titled, ‘The Man, The General and The President,’ authored by Femmy Carrena, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, The Punch reports.

Obasanjo said; “My prayer is that all of us will have something to contribute to making this country what God has created it to be – a land flowing with milk and honey.

Right now, it is a land flowing with bitterness and sadness, that is not what God wants this country to be.

“We must change the narrative, we must talk to ourselves in the civilised language.

“There is nowhere you go in this country that you will not see geniuses in any section of the country. So, why should we look down on ourselves?”

Buhari’s tweet: Adamu Garba asks FG to block Twitter from Nigeria’s internet space

Former presidential aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Adamu Garba, has said the Federal Government should shut down Twitter from Nigeria’s internet space.

He spoke in reaction to the tech giant’s deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s controversial tweet on the civil war.

According to Garba, Twitter has no right to take down President Buhari’s tweet.

Taking to his Twitter account, the APC Chieftain said the microblogging platform should be expunged from Nigeria.

He wrote: “Twitter has no right to infuse into our local political affairs. It’s a company not a government.

“By removing our democratically elected President’s speech to the people of Nigeria, Twitter needs to be shut down from Nigerian internet space.

“Twitter needs to get out of Nigeria.”

He went further to urge Buhari and his cabinet to consider using his social media app as an alternative to Twitter.

Garba added; President @MBuhari and his entire cabinet, including all Govt related social handles should consider using my app.

We grow our local brand and perfect it by using and supporting it.

Since we have a local content rules, my app is there to protect our national integrity.

Agreed we have our constraints but it is ours and we are improving on it.

My app will do well to advance the interest of Nigerians and Africans than some foreign online colonization tool called Twitter.

Insecurity: Onion suppliers stop supply of onions to South-East

Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (OPMAN), says it has suspended the supply of onions to the South-East over the security challenges currently facing the region.

The National President of OPMAN, Aliyu Isah, made the announcement on Wednesday, May 2, 2021.

He said the association’s decision was based on the recent hijack of two of their member trucks by armed men suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

Gunmen have been attacking critical public infrastructure in the southeast for some weeks now especially police stations and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Recall that a video surfaced days ago showing some residents of Imo state looting two truck-full of onions from the North which were reportedly hijacked by gunmen and distributed to the public.

IPOB/ESN not behind attacks in South-East, Igbos don’t shed blood – Ezeife

Former governor of Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, says the Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network (ESN) are not behind the violent attacks in the south-east.

Speaking when he featured on Arise TV on Wednesday, Ezeife said investigation carried out by elders in the south-east revealed that such attacks are designed to provoke Igbo people.

There have been several attacks on government installations in the region, with police stations, prisons and the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) being specific targets.

Also, an APC Chieftian, Ahmed Gulak, was murdered by unknown gunmen in Imo state on May 30.

Ezeife, while noting that killing and destruction do not conform to the Igbo character, he said some of the attacks were likely carried out by people outside the region.

He said; “Anybody who hears the story will be mad at the story. But who are the people who are burning INEC offices? Who are killing the police? There is the impression that some people, maybe even in the government, are guilty of organising such things and blaming it on IPOB and ESN. Efforts have been made by our elders of our people to find out the truth and the hands of IPOB and ESN are not there”.

“I am sure you know that at Owerri prison, there was a lot of devastation and the IG of police blamed it immediately on IPOB and ESN. Even the governor of that state at the beginning thought it was the IPOB and ESN, but now we know that more than 80 percent of people caught by the CCTV footage are not from the south-east or even the east at all.

“Now, Gulak is dead. Was it a design again to blow it on IPOB and the ESN? We are learning more now that there is a design to provoke the east. Igbo do not have the tradition of shedding blood or burning down things.”
