HURIWA urges Nigerian govt to cooperate with FBI on Kyari

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) on Sunday urged the Federal Government to cooperate with the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in order to unravel the fraud allegations against the Head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari.

The group made the call in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko.

HURIWA said Nigeria risks being tagged a pariah state if the federal government fails to cooperate with the US on the matter.

The statement read: “We mustn’t behave like a pariah state by failing to cooperate or partner with the United States of America in this and many other matters.

“We warn that this Abba Kyari’s matter is purely a diplomatic matter and not a matter that should be looked upon with the binoculars of Ethnic and religious prisms.

It’s our international image as Nigerians that is at the risk of being bastardised should President Muhammadu Buhari not follow the international law in handling this matter instead of looking at it from an Arewa or Islamic point of view.”

The US Department of Justice had said in a document last week that the police officer allegedly received bribes from the suspected international fraudster, Ramon Abass aka Hushpuppi, to arrest one of his accomplices in Nigeria, Kelly Chibuzo Vincent.

However, Kyari had denied receiving any bribe from the suspected fraudster.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) had earlier on Sunday approved the police officer’s suspension over an alleged link with Hushpuppi who is standing trial for frauds in the US.

Arewa Youths threaten to shut down Nigeria over embattled DCP Kyari

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, (AYCF) has vowed to shut down Nigeria if anything should happen to embattled Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) DCP Abba Kyari, following his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over fraud and money laundering allegations, as well as the subsequent suspension by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The AYCF, in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, Yerima Shettima and made available to Ripples Nigeria on Monday, declared that “nothing must happen to decorated officer, Abba Kyari,in the wake of his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” or they will crumble the country.

The group described Kyari’s current travails as “the attempted intimidation of a police officer right inside his independent fatherland.”

It also rejected the “purported plans to arrest DCP Kyari,” describing the move by the FBI as “totally unacceptable, a slap on the sensibility of our compatriots and a ridicule on one of our finest crack detectives.”

The AYCF hereby warns the FBI and all those trying to rubbish the good works of DCP Abba Kyari that we will resist such attempts with everything within our powers.

“We are keeping taps on the happenings in the matter as there is no justification for singling out one of Nigeria’s most effective and efficient police officers for castigation.

“We are calling all Nigerians who are truly patriotic to stand behind a man who has made an unrivalled mark on the sands of time by diligently serving his fatherland.

“We also call on relevant stakeholders in the country, especially civil society organizations, to rally round this officer who risked his life in multiple operations across Nigeria, a fact proved many times through BBC news coverage of such operations.

While we are conscious of our sovereignty as a nation, we demand justice for a man with unrivalled records of detective capabilities in the recent history of Nigeria”, the group said

More troubles for super cop, DCP Kyari, as police commission suspends him

Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has landed in more troubles over his alleged role in the fraud activities of suspected internet fraudster, Abass Akande, also known as Hushpuppi.

Hours after the Inspector General of Police (IGP) suspended him to allow for an investigation into the allegations against him, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has also slammed the super cop with another suspension.

More to come…

‘APC to take over South-East soon,’ says ex-Senate President, Nnamani

Former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, on Saturday expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would take over the South-East soon.

The ex-Senate President disclosed this to journalists shortly after supervising the ward congress at Ward 2, Enugu South local government area of Enugu State.

He said the mass participation of APC members in the exercise showed that the people have confidence in democracy.

Nnamani, who is a member of the APC National Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, advised party members to continue in the same spirit and ensure that the party take its rightful place in the South-East ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He said: “The major target is for APC to be the most dominant political party in the South-East.

“Gradually we are getting there especially with the solid foundation we have laid at the ward levels of the party now.”

The APC chieftain thanked party members in Enugu state for hitch-free ward congresses in the state.

Nnamani added: “It is only in APC that you see this type of peace and cooperation among party members.”

Aregbesola’s loyalists kick as APC adopts consensus option in Osun

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State on Saturday rejected the adoption of consensus leaders across the 332 wards in the state.

The members, who are loyalists of the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, alleged that they were excluded from the process.

The exercise went smoothly in the 35 wards of the Osun West Senatorial District as APC members who were led by one Barr. Gbadegesin Adedeji adopted the consensus option in the election of ward executives.

However, the former Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Najeem Salam, insisted that the executives were imposed on party members.

Salam, who is one of Aregbesola’s loyalists in Osun State, alleged that there was a political crisis in the state.

He said: “The national caretaker committee does not set up the ward congress committee. The government in power has been cajoling people, harassing party members that are not in support of what they are doing within the party.

Unfortunately, those that came to the state for sales of form are incommunicado. We only saw it online that they came for stakeholders’ meetings. People like me and some other eminent persons in the party were not involved.

“How would you know the stakeholders? Why would people that want to go to an election against another party in 2022 be afraid of the election within the party?

“With what the present administration is doing with the issue of ward congress, it seems they are not ready for the election in 2022.”

However, the Chairman of the APC National Congress Committee, Gbenga Elegbeleye, said the exercise went well.

“Members conducted themselves in a very free and fair atmosphere; officers were elected in our presence. We saw pure consensus. They all agreed that these are the officers we want to handle the affairs of the party in our wards. There is no crisis about that,” he said.

Also, the state Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, said the congresses were very peaceful across the state.

APGA, Bianca Ojukwu settle differences ahead of Anambra elections

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Peace, Reconciliation and Outreach Committee on Saturday in Enugu held a closed door meeting with Mrs Bianca Ojukwu.

Mrs Ojukwu is the wife of late national leader of the party, Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu and former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain.

The delegation which included the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Victor Okafor was led by a former chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting that lasted for over four hours, Umeh said that the essence of the visit was for the party to reconcile with the wife and their late leader.

He said that it had become necessary to bring members of the party in Anambra together as one family in order to successfully confront the various tasks ahead.

“For sometime now, APGA has been operating with a missing rib. Bianca has contributed to the wellbeing of APGA starting from the time her late husband was the leader of the party,” he said.

The former national chairman of the party said that it was necessary to bring every member on board and to forget the past, especially, with the forthcoming Nov. 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra.

However, the important thing is that the ideals for which this party was established must be protected no matter the interest anybody is pursuing in this party.

“This visit is a turning point in the journey of this party to the gubernatorial election. We are satisfied that as a mother in this party, she has listened to our prayers and pleas.

“She should avail herself fully towards the pursuit of victory for APGA in order to deepen the hold of the party in the state and to ensure that the legacy left for us will remain intact,” he said.

In her remarks, Mrs Ojukwu said that it was sad that the party found itself in such dilemma which could have been averted.

The former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain regretted that previous efforts made to assuage aggrieved members of the party hit the rock.

“There have been to date at least two other committees that have been set up by the governor to advance the grievances of very great number of APGA members who are dissatisfied with the party.

“The first and second reconciliation committees made recommendations but they never saw the light of day,” she said.

She, however, pledged to put behind the incidences of the past and contribute to the progress of the party.

In-fighting as Abia APC holds parallel congresses

Two factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday organised parallel ward congresses in Abia, as a leadership crisis continues to rock the party.

The congresses came barely two days after the party re-affirmed the suspension of its chieftain, Chief Ikechi Emenike.

Emenike is the leader of a faction of the party, challenging the Donatus Nwankpa-led Executive Committee (EXCO).

The EXCO at its expanded caucus meeting on Thursday announced Emenike’s suspension for alleged party misconduct.

The development, however, did not deter Emenike’s camp, as it went ahead to conduct its congresses, supervised by the National Ward Congresses Committee.

Briefing newsmen on the situation at the state Secretariat of the party in Umuahia, the Chairman, APC Caretaker Committee in the state, Chief Donatus Nwankpa, said the party declared the committee members wanted.

He said the committee members failed to report to the party secretariat in Umuahia upon their arrival in the state.

Nwankpa said the party set up screening and appeal committees for the congress, in line with the party Constitution.

He said that his EXCO had also taken delivery of all congress documents from its national secretariat.

“The party duly took custody of them, signed them and members, who paid to the national account, not state account, were given forms.

“And by the party regulation, after the sale of forms, the state party chairman is to set up a screening and appeal committee on screening.

“Those forms were duly handed over to the two lpcommittees at various locations.

“They have come back and we have screened candidates for the congresses.

“Unfortunately for us, the people who are supposed to receive the document from the screening committee did not appear.

We are not unaware of some clandestine meetings going on among those claiming to be stakeholders,” Nwankpa said.

IGP suspends Kyari as four-man special investigation panel begins probe

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has recommended the immediate suspension of DCP Abba Kyari, the Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) from the Service of the Nigeria Police Force, pending the outcome of an ongoing internal investigations touching on him.

Kyari had been in the news after a US court directed the Federal Bureau of Investigation to arrest and detain him over links to an internet fraudster, Abbas Akande, also known as Hushpuppi and his role in an alleged internet fraud of about $1.1 million.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, disclosed Kyari’s suspension in a statement on Sunday, saying that the IGP, in his letter to the Police Service Commission, on Saturday 31st July, noted that his recommendation for Kyari’s suspension is in line with the internal disciplinary processes of the Force.

It would be recalled that Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, a Nigerian alleged internet fraudster, who is currently facing trial in the United States for internet crimes had indicted Kyari.

Hushpuppi who was arrested in Dubai and extradited to the United States had allegedly told a US court that he bribed Kyari to arrest and jail an associate of his, Chibuzo Vincent, after the $1.1 million deal went wrong.

However, in a statement on his Facebook page, Kyari admitted that Hushpuppi actually sent N300,000 to him, saying it was not a bribe but money meant for some clothes he (Hushpuppi) wanted to buy from his (Kyari’s) designer.

Officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had also reportedly met with the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba to discuss Kyari’s extradition to the United States, after the US District Court for the Central District of California issued a warrant of arrest for him and ordered the FBI to take action to extradite him to the US.

According to Mba, the IGP said the suspension would create an enabling environment for the NPF Special Investigation Panel (SIP) to carry out its investigations into the weighty allegations against Kyari without interference.

He explained that the suspension is without prejudice to the constitutional presumption of innocence in favour of the officer.

The SIP, comprising four Senior Police Officers, is headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Joseph Egbunike, who is in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID).

“The SIP, inter alia, is to undertake a detailed review of all the allegations against Kyari by the US Government as contained in relevant documents that have been availed the NPF by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“The SIP is also to obtain a detailed representation of Kyari to all the allegations levelled against him, conduct further investigations as it deems fit, and submit recommendations to guide further actions by the Force Leadership on the matter.

Meanwhile, the IGP has reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to the Rule of Law and assured the public of the sanctity of the probe as well as the absolute respect for the rights and privileges of the officer throughout the period of the investigations”.

Two killed as security operatives foil kidnap attempt in Oyo

Two suspected kidnappers have been reportedly killed by men of the South-West security network, Amotekun, in a failed abduction attempt in the Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The development was confirmed in Ibadan on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adewale Osifeso.

“It is true. The operation was carried out by police, Amotekun, vigilantes, and local hunters. An investigation is on and we shall supply further information soon,” Osifeso said.

Also, confirming the incident, Amotekun Commandant in the state, Olayinka Olayanju, said the incident occurred on Friday, noting that weapons were recovered from the suspected kidnappers and deposited with the police.

He said the operation was carried out in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, noting that the two suspects were killed during a failed kidnap attempt by the duo who stormed Iwere-Ile town on Friday.

It was learnt that operatives of the Amotekun Corps who were called when the kidnappers stormed the town engaged the kidnappers and killed two of them.

Ripples Nigeria learnt that the kidnappers stormed the community around 3.pm on Friday and made attempt to kidnap some of the residents.

However, it was gathered that immediately the Amotekun operatives got to the scene of the incident at about 3:30 p.m, they engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle and killed two.

It’s laughable, unthinkable for Akeredolu to ask Jegede to join him —Ondo PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has charged Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to stop grandstanding and the clicking of wine glasses over his Supreme Court victory.

The party stated this in a statement issued on Saturday by its state Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, in Akure.

Peretei noted that the governor should instead work toward the betterment of the welfare of the people of Ondo State.

The party also condemned an invitation by Akeredolu to the PDP’s candidate at the governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) to join him to move Ondo State forward, describing the invitation as laughable.

Akeredolu extended the olive branch to Jegede in his reaction to the Supreme Court judgment.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the Supreme Court in its Wednesday, July, 28 judgment pronounced a 4-3 split decision giving victory to Akeredolu in the October 2020 governorship election.

However, in its statement, the PDP said its candidate could not be part of Akeredolu’s government that had thrown many students of tertiary institutions out of school because parents could not pay astronomical fees.

Our party and its candidate cannot be part of government that has crippled the healthcare system in the State. We cannot be part of a government that has withdrawn free shuttle buses meant for school children.

“It is unthinkable that Akeredolu can ask our candidate to join a government that has pauperised civil servants in the state through the payment of 30 per cent salaries that are not even regular.

“Civil servants now have to take loans to be able to pay house rents or send their children to school.

“Just on Friday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) at the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa embarked on an indefinite strike.

It is important to stress that before the October 2020 election, Eyitayo Jegede and the PDP drew up a well-articulated manifesto on education, healthcare delivery, agriculture, industrialisation, the welfare of civil servants, and much more in contradiction to what is obtainable now in the state.

“To this extent, there is no meeting point between what was designed by the PDP and what Akeredeolu’s scorecard shows,’’ it stated.

Gani Adams berates DSS for failing to present Igboho’s aides in Court

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Gani Adams has slammed the Department of State Services (DSS) for its refusal to ensure the appearance of the 12 aides of Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that the agitators were arrested on July 1, during the raid of his Soka residence in Ibadan.

However, the DSS on Thursday said it had only three of the aides in custody as against the initial 12 reported in the media.

In his reaction via a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, on Friday Adams noted that the conduct of the DSS was a gross violation of human rights.

He also wondered why it has taken the DSS so much time to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ugly incident where two of Igboho’s aides were allegedly killed.

“Our constitution is clear about the rights of every citizen that anybody arrested must be taken to court latest 24 hours after his arrest and such rights must be protected under the law.

“It is sad and most unfortunate that the DSS had arrogated to itself covert power that usually reminds us the inglorious years of the military where citizens’ rights have no basis in their law.

It is sad and most unfortunate that the DSS had arrogated to itself covert power that usually reminds us the inglorious years of the military where citizens’ rights have no basis in their law.

“Therefore, the DSS failure to present Igboho’s aides in court for the second time was a flagrant display of lawlessness and gross injustice. Ideally, it is only the President and the Vice President of the country that have that immunity as provided by our constitution.

“So why is the DSS finding it too difficult to allow the constitution to take its course as it is done in other climes,” he stated.

Tinubu hale, hearty, aide dispels reports of APC leader’s hospitalisation

With speculations rife about the health of Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) a disclaimer has been issued by his aide to dispel the reports.

According to some media reports, Tinubu had been hospitalised in the United States where he underwent some surgeries due to his health.

However, a statement issued on Saturday by Tunde Rahman, Media Adviser to Tinubu noted that the APC leader “is hale and hearty. He is not in any hospital. He has no medical problem that would require hospitalization. Yes, he is out of the country at the moment. He will be back shortly.”

Rahman further berated “some mischievous people” who always attribute Tinubu’s foreign trips to ill-health.

Anytime he travels out of the country, the next thing some mischievous people would say is he is sick, hospitalized or has died.

“It is shameful that perpetrators of this evil are not deterred by the fact that each time this fake news has been propagated, they have been proven wrong.

“Who really is afraid of Asiwaju Tinubu? Those wishing Asiwaju Tinubu evil or dead should be careful. They should know the matter of life and death is in the hand of only God Almighty”, he stated.

Tension in Enugu APC over alleged hijack of congress materials

There was tension in the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) over allegations that materials for the ward congresses of the party might have been hijacked by some of its stakeholders.

It was learnt that stakeholders of the party drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state and 260 political wards who were invited for a briefing at the party secretariat on Thursday waited in vain, as no member of the committee showed up.

The tension heightened when information filtered in that the secretary of the committee, Ben Kure from Kaduna State, who was sworn in on Wednesday at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja, had been suddenly replaced.

Ripples Nigeria learnt that though members of the party in the state paid for delegate forms, none of the forms was received at the state secretariat as of Thursday evening, paving way for suspicion that the actual delegates may not participate in the exercise.

A chieftain of the party in the state, Chief Onyeike Ugwu, speaking with newsmen in the state, said, “All the sensitive materials have been given to a member of the committee, whom we learnt is taking orders from one of the leaders of the party in the southeast zone.

“The worry is that the little success we have made in bringing members together might kiss the dust if the congress is not well managed. Nobody is ready to accept the kind of thing they did in Anambra state during the governorship primary.

“The committee members must come to Enugu and conduct this congress in line with the stipulated guidelines.”

On his part, the Enugu State Ward Congress Committee Chairman, Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, said the anxiety being expressed by some members of the party was not necessary.

“They should have called the national secretariat of the party. Talking about the hijacking is part of their job. Nobody has hijacked the process and I am not working for any individual,” he said.

Meanwhile, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, on Friday during the stakeholder meeting with the seven-member committee for the ward congress election, challenged the party members in the state to use the ward Congresses to lay the political foundation for future election victories.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party in the state, Dr. Ben Nwoye commended the stakeholders for attending the event.

He said most of the wards have already agreed on consensus arrangements but added that those who are indisposed to the arrangement would have their congress.

APC adopts consensus method for Osun congress

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker Committee in Osun State, Prince Gboyega Famodun, said on Friday party stakeholders have adopted consensus method for the ward congress in the state.

The ruling party will conduct its ward congresses in the 36 states of the federation on Saturday.

Famodun, who addressed APC members at a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House Banquet Hall in Osogbo, said the party leaders in all the 332 wards in Osun have promised to ensure a hitch-free exercise.

He said: “As recommended by the National Secretariat we have adopted consensus in Osun for the purpose of the smooth running of the party. “Things have been properly done and our homework has been done properly. Our fathers and leaders have scrutinised the 332 wards that we have in Osun. We have concluded the exercise that will lead us to a very good congress tomorrow (Saturday).”

‘Steer clear of APC congresses,’ Mala-Buni warns saboteurs

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, Mai Mala-Buni, on Friday warned saboteurs to steer clear of the party’s ward congresses.

Mala-Buni gave the warning in a statement issued by the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs in Yobe State, Mamman Mohammed.

The chairman urged officials conducting the congress to be fair and objective to all candidates taking part in the exercise.

He said: “As stakeholders of the party, we have a great responsibility to make the ward Congress in all the participating states successful. We should endeavour to place the party and members’ interest above personal interests.”

The Yobe State governor warned that the party would not hesitate to take decisive measures against anyone who deliberately sabotage the congress.

He added: “We have come a long way repositioning the party, we have reconciled many groups and individuals, we must not allow personal interests in this election to divide us and draw us back.

We should avoid media wars over issues we can settle at the secretariat. I assure you that we will be fair and just to everyone.”

Mala-Buni’s statement came just 24 hours after some top APC members had warned the party leadership on the danger of going ahead with the ward congress slated to hold in the 36 states across the country on Saturday.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo; the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu, and the Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Ita Enang; had on Thursday warned the party of the dire consequences should it go ahead with the exercise.

But the APC had insisted that the congresses would go ahead as scheduled.

The party also asked members to ignore statements from some leaders calling for the removal of the caretaker committee.

Suspected herdsmen kill four in Plateau communities

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen on Friday killed four persons during attacks on two communities in Plateau State.

The hoodlums killed three people in the Nche-Tahu community in Bassa local government area the state and one other in the Gwa-Rim community, Riyom LGA.

The gunmen also razed 10 houses in the Nche-Tahu community.

The Publicity Secretary of the Miango Youth Development Association, Nuhu Bitrus, confirmed the incident.

He said: “It was last night that the gunmen attacked the Nche-Tahu community in Miango, Bassa LGA and killed three of our people and injured two other persons. 10 houses were burnt to ashes in the same Nche-Tahu village and valuable items and domestic animals carted away by herdsmen.”

The spokesman of the state police command, Gabriel Ubah, also confirmed the attacks.

He said security had been beefed up in the affected areas.

Best wishes to ‘bad belle’ people waiting to see us arrested by FBI – Abba Kyari

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari says ‘bad belle Nigerians’ will wait forever to see him arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over bribery allegations leveled against him by suspected internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi.

Hushpuppi, who pleaded guilty to various charges, had said he paid Kyari to jail a fellow fraudster Kelly Chibuzor Vincent after both were locked in a dispute presumably over how to share the $1.1 million loot received from a Qatari businessperson.

But in his reaction on his Facebook page on Thursday morning, Kyari said he never demanded money from Hushpuppi, that he only helped connect him to the supplier of his native wears

Although he admitted to knowing about the money-related dispute, the DCP disclosed that it was about a threat to life and not connected to any multi-million dollar deal gone bad.

Also, a U.S. court had issued a warrant for the Federal Bureau of Investigations, (FBI) to arrest Kyari.

Replying to a comment on the post, the police boss asked those criticising him to produce the proof that there is a warrant for his arrest.

APC governors hold emergency meeting after Akeredolu’s narrow win at Supreme Court

Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will today (Friday) hold an emergency meeting in Abuja over Wednesday’s ruling of the Supreme Court in the case between the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state’s October 2020 gubernatorial election.

The Supreme Court judgment had attracted controversy, as the Judges at the Apex Court had reportedly unanimously agreed that it was illegal for Mai Mala Buni to be the governor of Yobe State and also hold an elective position in the party, noting that a sitting governor cannot hold a dual position of governor and party national chairman.

However, four out of the seven-member panel of judges dismissed Jegede’s appeal over his failure to add Buni as a defendant in the suit.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, had in a memo which leaked on Wednesday, called on the party’s leadership to urgently remove Buni as chairman of the caretaker committee, warning that the party risks imminent legal tussles if the governor remains its interim leader.

Keyamo also advised that the party should postpone its planned congresses under Buni’s leadership, arguing that the “unity” in the party might be cut short if the APC continued with the congresses scheduled to hold nationwide on Saturday under Buni’s leadership.

It was gathered that following the controversy that greeted the Supreme Court ruling, APC governors will meet today to discuss the state and local government congresses scheduled to hold on Saturday (tomorrow).

APC Chairman in Borno State and Chairman of the party’s Chairmen’s Forum, Ali Bukar Dalori, gave hints that the outcome of the meeting would determine whether or not the party would go ahead with the state and local government congresses.

You know I am a loyal party man. The party communicated to us to continue with preparations for the congresses pending the outcome of their meeting.

“The state governors are meeting tomorrow (today) so I cannot categorically say whether we’ll hold the congresses or they will say we should postpone them.

The governors have converged on Abuja for an emergency meeting tomorrow. After that meeting, we’ll know the position of the party and the direction they want to follow. Don’t worry, by tomorrow we shall know what’s going to happen,” Dalori was quoted to have said

However, Senator Magnus Abe, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District of Rivers State in the National Assembly, on Thursday, slammed Keyamo’s statement on the Governor Mala Buni-led All Progressives Congress (APC) committee, which called for Buni’s removal.

Ripples Nigeria reported that Abe had in a statement on Thursday said Keyamo’s argument based on his interpretation of the judgement of the Supreme Court in Jegede Vs Akeredolu was baseless since the defence of Buni, who heads the National Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party was never heard.

He expressed surprise over Keyamo’s position on the matter, especially his call for the party to immediately suspend all preparations for the forthcoming congresses.

However, he noted that the party leaders who had reservations about the constitution of the caretaker committee were informed that the decision to establish the Committee was reached after extensive legal examination of the issues confronting the APC at that time by a body of eminent lawyers in leadership positions in the party.

“The Buni- led caretaker committee in the determined effort to reposition the party and carry out its difficult assignment has adjusted the seating arrangements in a lot of states and this may explain the stand that some party leaders will take on this issue. But it is important that we deal with facts and the law,” he said.

Omo-Agege disagrees with Keyamo, defends Buni’s appointment as APC Chairman

The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege on Friday has disagreed with a statement by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo over the legality of Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, as the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Keyamo had criticised the appointment of Buni as the APC‘s Chairman in the wake of the Supreme Court judgement affirming the candidacy of Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

Four out of the seven-member panel of the apex court dismissed the appeal of Eyitayo Jegede, the October 2020 Governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo, to remove Mr Akeredolu as the elected state governor.

In his reaction to this judgement, Mr Keyamo said the ruling party would have lost the case if Mr Jegede had joined Mr Buni in the suit

Keyamo said, “The little technical point that saved Gov AKEREDOLU was that Jegede failed to join GOV. Mai Mala Buni in the suit. Jegede was challenging the competence of Gov. Mai Mala Buni as a sitting Governor to run the affairs of the APC as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee.

He contends that this is against Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution which states that a sitting Governor shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever. In other words, had Buni been joined in the suit, the story may have been different today as we would have lost Ondo State to the PDP,” he noted.

However, in his response via a statement issued on Friday, Omo-Agege stated that such a position must not be salaried executive office while explaining that a governor could lead a committee or group such as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF).

Omo-Agege also said he believes the law does not forbid a sitting governor from holding another position.

In his legal opinion as a lawyer, Senator Omo-Agege disagreed with Keyamo’s position.

He stressed that it was absolutely impossible and untenable to argue that the provisions of Section 183 barred a governor from being a chairman or member of a caretaker committee set up by his or her political party.

In reaction to the Supreme Court’s judgement on the Ondo State elections, an excerpt from Omo-Agege’s statement reads, “Without much ado, it is important to state that the majority decision of the Supreme Court in Jegede’s case, emphatically dismissed the appeal and did not consider the issue of the provisions of Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution, neither did the majority decision make any comments on the competence of Governor Mai Mala Bumi as the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee.

The sole question that begs for consideration is whether the appointment of Governor Mai Mala Bumi as the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman offends the provisions of Section 183 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended)?

“In answering the above question, it is pertinent to reproduce the provisions of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) as follows:

“The governor shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever.”

From the explicit provision of Section 183 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), it is absolutely impossible and untenable to argue that the provisions of Section 183 bar a Governor from being a Chairman or member of a Caretaker Committee set up by his or her political party.

“There is no law under our legal jurisprudence that bars or prohibits a Governor who is a member of a political party and won elections under the political party from carrying out specific assignments on behalf of his party. How this will amount to holding an Executive office is beyond every stretch of human comprehension.”

You can’t succeed outside your educational qualification – President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said nobody can succeed outside their educational qualification, hence Nigerians are aware of the priority of education.

Speaking on Thursday during a panel session at the global education summit, in London, United Kingdom, the president said his administration is committed to raising the budget for education by 50 per cent in the next two years, adding that Nigeria will attain 100 per cent budgetary increase by 2025.

He said no Nigerian parent jokes with education, as they are aware that if their children missed the opportunity of being educated, they have missed a lot.

Buhari noted that the population of the country is a challenge for any administration; but despite this, the government and people have realised that education is the starting point for success.

He said; “You can’t succeed outside your educational qualification. Anybody who missed education has missed everything. Nigerians are acutely aware of the priority of education, and parents are making sacrifices to ensure that their children and wards get educated”.

On the panel with Buhari were Presidents Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Faure Gnassingbe of Togo, Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya and Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi.
