South-West governors meet on insecurity, investment

Governors of states in the South-West met on Tuesday in Lagos State to address insecurity and other issues of common interest in the region.

The meeting held at the State House in Marina was attended by governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (host), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), and Dapo Abiodun (Ogun).

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, was represented by his deputy, Rauf Olaniyan.

Akeredolu, who briefed journalists on the outcome of the meeting, said the governors deliberated on the security situation and investment in the region.

He said: “The six Governors of the South-West under the South-West Governors’ Forum met today. We deliberated on a number of common and personal issues. We also deliberated on our common heritage, which is the Oodua Group of Companies.

At the end, we agreed on a few things; a number of them, which have to do with security, are not what we can discuss in the open. This short address is just to let the journalists know we met today. But we don’t want our decisions discussed in the open.”

The governors’ meeting came just five days after gunmen attacked the Abolongo correctional centre in Oyo State and freed over 800 inmates.

The hoodlums also killed two security personnel attached to the facility.

Nigeria will heave sigh of relief when I succeed Buhari in 2023 – Yahaya Bello

The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, said on Monday he is ready to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s President in 2023.

The governor, who disclosed this when he featured in a programmed on Arise TV programme, said Nigerians would have a heave of relief when he takes over the country’s leadership in two years time.

He said his achievements in Kogi State are hugely appreciated at the national level.

Bello stressed that he would deploy the leadership qualities that have endeared him to the people of the state in managing the affairs of the country.

He also reaffirmed his opposition to the rotational presidency, saying the best person with the capacity to unite Nigerians should be allowed to occupy the nation’s highest political office in two year’s time.

The governor said: “Almost six years down the line, Kogi is united more than ever before. Now come to 2023, what I have been able to achieve in Kogi State is desired at national level. I’m sure you know we are living in a global village and whatever you do even in your bedroom is noticed out there.

“If Nigerians across board — youth, women, leaders and followers seeing my leadership style, uniting the people, bringing in experts, adding value to governance, prudent and sincere way and manner of utilisation of our resources and getting the results, balancing the equation which is most desired in the country today — if this multitude is yearning and calling me to come and serve this great nation in the year 2023 after President Muhammadu Buhari, I will say, yes I’m ready.

“Serving Nigeria in that greater capacity will serve the interest of the people of Kogi state, Nigerians, Africa and even black race than I remaining the executive governor of Kogi State.

“By the grace of God when I would have been sworn in as the President and Commander-in-Chief taking over from Buhari on May 29, 2023, Nigeria will have a heave of relief.”

October 31 date for national convention sacrosanct – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said on Monday said the October 30 and October 31 dates for its national convention remained sacrosanct.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, who disclosed this to journalists at a media briefing in Abuja, said arraignments for the convention were ongoing.

He also dismissed reports of misunderstanding between the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and the convention committees, saying there was no issue as far as the convention was concerned.

The spokesman said: “As far as the party is concerned, the date for the convention remains October 30 to October 31.

“As we speak, we read reports in so many media space that there are issues.

The reports say that only three governors are working, that national convention committees are not meeting and the National Working Committee (NWC) members are not in their offices.

“That is totally and absolutely incorrect, and some of your colleagues went upstairs into the NWC Hall, to meet with members of the NWC, who are taking their respective seats and are deliberating on the success of the forthcoming national convention.

“So, I want to bring to the attention of my dear colleagues that the national convention organizing committee’s leadership is in town.

“These are the Chairman, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State; the Deputy Chairman, Governor Diri Duoye of Bayelsa State; as well as Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who is the Secretary of the committee.

The three of them are in Abuja to oversee the convention process, while all the respective subcommittees are working.

“I am briefing you now because I am the Secretary of the publicity subcommittee.

“So, all the committees are working. We have about 15 sub-committees for the purpose of the convention, and they are all working.

The leadership of the convention committee as well was in town, and working as well.”

He reassured that the venues for the convention and the accreditation of delegates had been secured.

Ologbondiyan added: “So, in truth, the convention plans are on the way, and there are no issues as far as the national convention is concerned as we speak.

On court case instituted against the party over the convention in Kaduna State, he said there was no judgment in that regard, and the PDP could not work on speculation.

“We do not have a judgment before the party. You cannot be talking about court issues, it is only when there is a judgment before the court that we will begin to talk about court issues, as far as the party’s concerned.

“All the plans have been set out for the national convention,” he concluded.

The PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, on Friday, threatened to halt the convention.

In a letter addressed to the party by his lawyers, Secondus insisted that the appeal he filed against his suspension was still pending in court.

He warned the party against going ahead with the convention.

‘Behave yourself during Anambra election,’ Nigerian govt warns troublemakers

The Federal Government on Monday threatened to deal decisively with criminal elements who are bent on scuttling next month’s governorship election in Anambra.

The National Security Adviser, Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno (retd), gave the warning during a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Abuja.

He assured that security agencies would do all within their power to ensure a hitch-free election in the state.

The NSA appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) staff not to be discouraged by the challenges they will face during the election but to give their best.

Monguno said: “For those of us in security, we have already done most of what we are supposed to do.

All the law enforcement agencies and security agencies have been charged to conduct themselves in a manner that will command the general widespread respect of all the people of Anambra state and, by extension, the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“They have been asked, charged to exhibit the highest level of professionalism, patience, perseverance, and self-restraint.

“We have been told to operate within the confines of the law, and not to go out and exhibit tendencies that would jeopardize this exercise.

“I want to reassure the general public that the security agencies are going to do everything within their power to ensure that the people of Anambra State undergo this exercise without any incident.

In the same vein, I want to offer a word of brotherly advice to our brothers and sisters in Anambra State who may want to use means, methods that are unorthodox and that are unusual to destabilise an already delicate situation, to please think again.

“We are all eager to achieve results in this election that will be acceptable to everybody.

“I don’t think it will be helpful for anyone to go out and ignite something that might cause pain for the good people of Anambra State — the peace-loving people — under whatever guise.

“Please, think again because the law enforcement agencies, inasmuch as we will operate in accordance with the requirements of their profession, will not sit by idly and allow people to start looting, destroying public property, and resorting to not just intimidation, terrorizing people, possibly arson and even homicide.

This will not be accepted. Law enforcement agencies have been asked to watch out for such elements. Because what you start, you don’t know how it will end.

“There is no need embarking on an exercise of self delusion, futility or some form of tangle.

“Please, I am appealing to you, we are all brothers. Stay within your wards, your local government and let us have a peaceful election.

“For the security agencies in the wards, any rogue element that decides to behave in a manner that will tar our collective institutions in very dark colour will be brought to justice in accordance with the rules of those institutions.

“Do not do anything that will harm this process.

“Finally, I want to encourage agents of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

I know you have gone through a lot of pain, a lot of losses with your colleagues from the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies, do not allow what has happened in the past to dampen your spirits.

“Do not allow it to drive you into a state of lethargy. Please continue to support the leadership of INEC and let us get this job done.”

Gumi warns, says declaring bandits terrorists will have consequences

Kaduna based controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has warned against declaration of bandits as terrorists, saying such action from government will come with a prize.

Ripples Nigeria had earlier reported that speakers of the 36 state Houses of Assembly in Nigeria on Saturday called on the Federal Government to declare bandits and kidnappers as terrorists, adding that kidnapping and banditry should be dealt with decisively.

The Speakers made the call after the National Assembly and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai had made same demand.

Gumi while reacting to the calls in a statement titled, ‘Declaring Bandits As Terrorists Will Come With A Prize’, said the moment bandits are termed terrorists, the direct foreign Jihadist movements will set in in force.

This, he said may be found palatable and attractive by many teaming unemployed youths.

The statement read in part: “Nobody doubts that sentimentalism today overrides sensibility in our polity. For the sake of posterity, some people will have to speak out.

The acts the bandits are committing now in NW have gradually over time become tantamount to terrorism because wherever innocent people are fatal victims it’s pure terrorism. Yet, innocence these days is relative. We agreed if their children and women are also killed, they are guilty by association or collateral damage, so also the bandits may think the same way. It’s right for vigilantes to lynch Fulanis herdsmen or anyone that looks like them by profiling but wrong for the herdsmen to ransack villages in retribution. They are pushed to believe it is an existential war and in war, ethics are thrown to the winds.

“Yet again, the only helpful part that is against bandits is that no other than them are attracted to join them in the NW because of its ethnic tinge and coloration.

However, the moment they are termed Terrorist – Islamic for that matter, the direct foreign Jihadist movements will set in in force. And many teaming unemployed youths may find it palatable and attractive. Shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ plus AK47 against a ‘secular’ immoral society where impunity reigns are the magnet for extremists and downtrodden – the majority of our youth.

“Already these deadly terrorist groups are fighting for the soul of these bandits. This will give criminality a spiritual cover and remove the stigma of discrediting them with such crimes since now they are fighting a ‘Jihad’ as they will claim.

“In such a situation, does the larger society -as it is, has the moral high ground to fight back? This is the most probable consequence, the price of which is not worth it. Nothing stops the kinetic actions from going on without the controversy of semantics.”

ICC prosecutor seeks investigation into abduction of Nigerian school children

The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) is seeking authorisation from the Pre-Trial Chamber of the court to open an investigation into cases of abduction of schoolchildren in several parts of Northern Nigeria, closure of schools in the region, and the persistent failure of the government both at the federal and state levels to end the abductions.

The decision comes after a petition was sent to the court by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The development was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.

SERAP had in the petition dated September 4, 2021, urged the ICC prosecutor, Mr Karim A. A. Khan, to “push for those suspected to be responsible and complicit in the commission of these serious crimes, to be invited and tried by the ICC.”

In the petition, SERAP argued that the severe and lifelong harms that result from depriving children of the right to education satisfy the gravity of harm threshold under the Rome Statute.

SERAP’s petition read: “Senior government officials know well or ought to know that their failure to prevent these crimes will violate the children’s human rights and dignity.

“The absence of any tangible and relevant investigation or prosecution in Nigeria suggests that the authorities are unwilling or unable to carry out genuine investigation or prosecution of those suspected to be responsible for and complicit in the abduction of students.

“The consequences of persistent abductions of students, closure of schools, and the failure to provide safe and enabling learning environments despite federal and state authorities yearly budgeting some N241.2 billion of public funds as “security votes”, are similar to those of the offences in article 7(1).

More than 10,000 schools have been reportedly closed in at least seven northern states over the fear of attack and abduction of pupils and members of staff. The states are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Niger and Yobe.”

The petition continued, “Among the string of abductions in Zamfara was the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in the town of Jangebe in February. The latest abduction comes after widespread reports of abduction of students and closure of schools in many states of Nigeria, including in north-central Niger State where some 91 schoolchildren were abducted.

An estimated 1.3 million Nigerian children have been affected by frequent raids on schools by suspected terrorists. Some 13 million Nigerian children are out of school nationwide. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), more than 1,000 students have been abducted from schools in northern Nigeria since December 2020.

“Families and parents have reportedly resulted to paying the terrorists thousands of dollars as ransom to secure the release of their children. An estimated $18.34 million was reportedly paid in ransoms between June 2011 and the end of March 2020.

Nigerian authorities have also failed and/or neglected to satisfactorily address the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from Chibok in 2014, which prompted the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. According to reports, more than 100 of those girls are still missing.”

Responding to the petition, Khan in a letter with reference number OTP-CR-363/21, and dated 22 October 2021 confirmed to SERAP that “the criteria for opening an investigation into a string of abductions and closure of schools in some parts of Nigeria have been met.”

The letter signed on the prosecutor’s behalf by the Head of the Information and Evidence Unit, Mark P. Dillon, read in part: “On behalf of the Prosecutor, I thank you for your communication received on 13/09/2021, as well as any subsequent related information.

The preliminary examination of the petition is considered complete. Under Article 53 of the Rome Statute, the next step in the judicial process is for the Prosecutor’s Office to prepare and submit a request to the Pre-Trial Chamber for authorisation to open an investigation on Nigeria.

“Once submitted, the request will be made publicly available on the Court’s website: www.icccpi.int. Your communication will be forwarded to the relevant team to be analysed, together with other related communications and other available information, in the context of any future investigations. We thank you for your interest in the ICC.”

Remarking to the development, Oluwadare said the ICC prosecutor has taken a significant step toward ensuring that those suspected to be responsible for the grave crimes against Nigerian schoolchildren are exposed, and held to account.

The victims of these crimes deserve justice. Impartial justice and reparation will deal a decisive blow to the impunity of perpetrators, and improve access of Nigerian children to education. SERAP will work closely with the ICC to achieve these important objectives,” he said.

Those of you who want to die because of us politicians, be careful —Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has cautioned Nigerians against fighting one another on behalf of politicians.

Makinde made this call on Saturday in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Taiwo Adisa, shortly after attending the wedding of former Ekiti Governor Ayo Fayose’s son.

Ripples Nigeria had reported that Makinde and Fayose a few months ago locked-horns over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West region.

Makinde and Fayose had a few months ago locked-horns over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West region.

However, one week before the Special National Convention of the PDP, Governor Makinde said whatever misunderstanding they have had, has been put behind them.

He also noted that the presence of the Chairman, Nigerian Governors’ Forum and present Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and erstwhile governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni at the wedding, should serve as a lesson to Nigerians.

“If you look at the former governors in Ekiti State – Governor Segun Oni, Governor Ayo Fayose, and the incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi, they have governed the state at one time or the other but they were not in the same party. So, those of you who want to die because of us politicians, be careful,” Makinde said.

“Politics is not something that should cause anybody to lose his or her life. We are moving towards the electioneering period, and I just want to use this opportunity to appeal to you all.

If you also look at this marriage, the bride and groom are from Christian and Muslim families. So, people who also want to always fight on religious grounds should have a rethink.”

Osinbajo, Tinubu allegedly at loggerheads over 2023 Presidency

The ranks of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) seems to be divided ahead of the 2023 elections due to the alleged cold war between two of its crucial stakeholders.

According to a THIS DAY report on Sunday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is at loggerheads with the APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu over the race for the Presidency.

According to sources, this might be connected to the reason Tinubu snubbed the Vice President during the latter’s London visit.

The APC leader had been convalescing in London for three months due to a surgery for an undisclosed ailment but was reportedly annoyed at the late visit of Osinbajo.

No fewer than 30 politicians, including President Muhammadu Buhari, Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Umar Ganduje (Kano), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), visited him in London.

“Essentially, Osinbajo arrived London to attend a conference and then, see Tinubu. As he arrived, he was supposed to see Tinubu the next morning but Tinubu left town by 6 a.m. the next morning to avoid seeing him. Even Adeboye (General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye) had arrived a day earlier and they planned to see Tinubu.

Tinubu has ramped up his campaign and Osinbajo also wants to be president and both cannot be president.

“So, now the die is cast for the battle of his life. He has not decided to run but a lot of people are mobilising him to run.

“The president came to see Asiwaju; other leaders came; Osinbajo did not come. If Osinbajo had wanted to come, he had enough time to do so. Tinubu wanted to return because he wanted to avoid the crowd in Lagos. And he returned when he did,” he explained.

Reacting to this situation, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, slammed the reports saying Osinbajo will never “endorse an endeavour that seeks to pitch them against each other.”

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo are members of the same party,” the former senator said.

Osinbajo regards Tinubu as a respected leader of a political family to which he belongs and will therefore not for any reason endorse an endeavour that seeks to pitch them against each other.

“We are not unaware of some people who may want to foist a crack among our leaders. Such an attempt is abortive. Osinbajo and Tinubu relationship dates way back and it shall continue to wax strong,” Ojudu explained.

Buhari urges ASUU to shun strike, embrace dialogue

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to resort to dialogue as a means of channelling their grouses rather than embarking on incessant strike actions.

The president gave the charge through Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, who represented him at the 36th convocation of the University of Ilorin held in Ilorin on Saturday.

Prof. Onimawo is former Vice-Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo

Buhari implored the ASUU to embrace peace saying, “No one gains from a crisis. While government alone cannot solve all challenges facing society, this administration is willing to listen to complaints and alternative points of view to managing a situation.

The university system cannot withstand any crisis now considering the time it had lost to Coronavirus pandemic.”

He reiterated the government’s resolve to prioritise and promote teacher education to raise the quality of teaching in the country.

President Buhari also tasked the University of Ilorin to play a leading role in the research and production of vaccines locally.

“The nation expects your university to play a leading role in research efforts to develop COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria.

“The nation expects nothing less from the Nigerian university system,’’ the president said.

PDP clears 27, disqualifies three for national convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Screening Committee has cleared 27 aspirants vying for elective positions in the party’s national convention slated for October 30.

The Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, who announced this at the official launch of the PDP National Convention Logo and Promotional Materials at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, said three aspirants were disqualified from vying for positions in the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

He listed the listed aspirants as Prof. Wale Oladipo, Okey Muo-Aroh, and Dr. Eddy Olafeso.

While Oladipo was vying for the position of Deputy National Chairman, South, Muo-Aroh, and Olafeso were eyeing the positions of National Secretary, and National Publicity Secretary respectively.

Fintiri, who is also the Chairman of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee, said the three aspirants were disqualified for taking the party to court in a bid to stop the convention.

The trio, according to him, failed to exhaust the internal conflicts resolution mechanism as provided for in the PDP Constitution

Lagos to make report of #ENDSARS panel public – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said on Thursday the state government would make the report of the judicial panel of inquiry which probed the allegation of brutality by operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and other police units public.

The panel concluded its sittings last Monday.

The governor, who addressed journalists on the ongoing efforts at rebuilding the state after last year’s destruction of public and private facilities and assets by hoodlums that hijacked the #ENDSARS protest, said the government would not make an attempt to cover up the recommendations of the panel.

He stressed that the panel report would be helpful in strengthening true reconciliation and preventing the re-occurrence of violence in the state.

Sanwo-Olu said: “The panel concluded its sittings about three days ago and has asked for time to put the reports together behind closed doors. We do not know the content of the report, but we want to say publicly that, upon the handover of the report, we will be making it public.

“We will not cover up anything. This is not who we are and that is not what our government stands for. We will make full disclosure of whatever recommendations that the panel will come up with. I assure citizens of Lagos that we will not leave anything to chance.”

Gov Lalong presents 2022 budget proposal of N106bn to Plateau Assembly

“Similarly we shall carry out the design of the Master Plan for some selected urban areas in Plateau State namely,(Heipang, Mangu, and Shendam).

“I also wish to also re-assure this Honourable House and indeed the citizens of Plateau State, that the Legacy Projects will be completed and delivered as envisaged. The government is doing everything possible to ensure that the people enjoy the benefits of those projects.”

Bomb attack forces NRC to suspend Kaduna-Abuja train services

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) on Thursday suspended train services along the Kaduna-Abuja route following the bombing of the rail tracks by suspected bandits.

The hoodlums bombed a portion of the Kaduna end of the rail track on Wednesday night.

They opened fire on the train, targeting the driver.

In a message to passengers on its booking website, the NRC said it was suspending the services for the safety of travellers.

According to the corporation, the explosives damaged the rail tracks somewhere between Dutse and Rijana areas of Kaduna.

It added that efforts to repair the damaged tracks and restore services along the route had commenced.

The notice read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, train services have been immediately suspended for the safety of our dear passengers.

“Efforts are in place to restore service. Further information would follow immediately, the service is restored.”

Photos: IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu arrives court amid tight security

Embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has arrived the Abuja Federal High Court for the continuation of his trial.

He is facing charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony.

Daily Post reports that Kanu was in a convoy of about six vehicles that drove into the court premises around 8am on Thursday morning by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS).

The convoy was led by a black Prado jeep, followed by two Hilux vans, two buses, and two other Hilux vans.

‘Get into politics to make desired changes,’ Osinbajo charges Nigerian youths

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday urged young Nigerians to get involved in politics in order to make the desired changes in government.

Osinbajo, according to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, made the call during a virtual interaction with Nigerian Fellows of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.

The Vice President said he would not have made changes in government, if he did not occupy a public office.

He noted that nations cannot afford to have their best brains and committed social activists remain in the civil space without being involved in politics.

Osinbajo said: “You need to go the extra length if you are not already involved, get involved in politics—while a lot can be achieved in civil society, the government still holds the ace in terms of capacity and resources to bring social goods to the largest numbers.

“Besides, being deciders instead of pressure group at the table in policy formulation are hugely different positions. The consummation of our great ideas to transform our societies ultimately will depend on ‘those politicians’ as we sometimes derisively describe them.

African nations and especially our country, cannot afford to have its best minds and most committed social activists remain only in the civil space. No, we simply can’t afford it, you have to get involved in politics. You have to be in the position to make the difference on the scale that is required.

“Of course, there are many who will not be involved in politics but those that are inclined should, and there will be many challenges even in the winning or getting heard in politics. But I want to say to you that it should be an objective that you should set for yourselves, to get involved at whatever level of politics so that you can make the difference on the scale that is required.

“It took public office for me to be able to get the scale of change that is required to make a difference.

Without a public office, I would have remained a pressure group activist, I would have done some nice things, but I wouldn’t have been able to make the changes that my country required.”

Like Kaduna, Ondo civil servants get ultimatum to take COVID-19 vaccine

The Ondo State government on Wednesday ordered all civil servants in the state to take the COVID-19 vaccine latest by November 1.

The Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Segun Odusanya, disclosed this at a meeting with the staff of the ministry in Akure, said the presentation of the COVID-19 vaccination card has become a compulsory requirement for civil servants as workers go to enter their offices from November 1.

He said: “The directive would be enforced as from November 1 with compliance to all the COVID-19 protocols by the civil servants in the state.

The enforcement has become imperative due to the ravaging effects of the pandemic and its attendant morbidity in the state.”

Odusanya said the meeting was the fallout of an earlier meeting with the Head of Service, who directed that any civil servant not vaccinated by November 1 would not be allowed into any state government office.

The permanent secretary added: “The enforcement is a means of protecting the staff because the pandemic, which is not yet over, has a more deadly variant, hence the need to be vaccinated and obey the protocols.”

The Kaduna State government had on Tuesday ordered the civil servants in the state to take the vaccine by October 31.

Court summons Ogun Assembly over suit filed by ex-OPIC chief

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Lagos has summoned the Ogun State House of Assembly to show cause within seven days, why it should not be restrained from proceeding with the case by the former Managing Director of the Ogun State Property Investment Corporation (OPIC) Mr Jide Odusolu.

The judge made the order on Monday sequel to a motion moved by Odusolu’s counsel, Adetunji Adedoyin-Adeniyi.

Odusolu’s counsel argued on why the court should grant the interim reliefs contained in his client’s motion ex parte.

However, the court ordered the respondents in the suit to show cause upon being served with the order and the court processes, why they should not be restrained in line with the interim reliefs sought by the plaintiff.

The respondents in the suit are the Inspector-General of Police, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Commissioner of Police in Ogun, the state House of Assembly, and the clerk of the Assembly.

On September 21, 2012, the Assembly had during its plenary purportedly adopted the report of its Committee on Anti-Corruption and Public Accounts which investigated the finances of OPIC and discovered huge sums of money allegedly missing from the agency’s accounts.

But Odusolu filed a suit before the court, seeking a declaration that the proceedings of the Assembly and the report of the committee which it purportedly adopted constituted an infringement on his fundamental right to a fair hearing.

He also sought a declaration that the Assembly lacked the competence to investigate the alleged crime and that the chairman of the committee was himself an interested party who served together with Odusolu in the previous administration and even inspected some OPIC projects, which he later claimed have not been executed.

Odusolu also asked the court to grant an order of injunction to restrain the Assembly from deploying the report to initiate any criminal complaint against him before the police and to restrain the police from acting on the said report, pending the hearing and final determination of the suit before it.

In a 40-paragraph affidavit deposed to by the plaintiff, he traced the series of projects executed by OPIC, adding that the accounts of OPIC have been audited by professionals and no fund was missing at all.

Justice Lifu adjourned the matter until November 1 for hearing.

Pandora Papers: Retired Delta State Judge allegedly acquires offshore companies illegally

A retired Judge in the Delta State Judiciary Service, Stella Ogene has been alleged of illegally acquiring an offshore company.

The company was allegedly exposed in the Pandora Papers according to a report on Tuesday by Premium Times in collaboration with UK-based Finance Uncovered.

Ogene retired from the judicial service of Delta State where she headed the state’s Customary Court of Appeal for a record 21 years, the report said.

According to the report, Ogene “operated a secret offshore company for several years in blatant breach of Nigeria’s code of conduct laws.

“And even in what pushes the limit of impunity, publicly accessible Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) records list her as a director of a private company for 10 years running.

In 2009, Mrs Ogene decided to venture into the London property market. However, for a public officer, she had a challenge: scaling the UK due diligence checks about her source of funds.

“She also needed to blindside the Nigerian Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) from determining an undeclared asset or an asset not attributable to fair income in accordance with Nigeria’s law.

“To scale these hurdles, she procured what experts call an envelope structure. To acquire the property without being detected, Mrs Ogene hid behind a company tucked away offshore.”

In order to unravel the situation, the investigators contacted Ogene who initially “made a flat denial of her link with the shell company, Assete Media Limited” before being sent a further written note describing information “including a Cook Worldwide register of clients listing her as a sole director and secretary, letters she signed indicating she is the beneficial owner and an exact address of the London property she secretly bought.

Realising the futility of further denial, Mrs Ogene then said, “I am not a sole director or any director for that matter and I am just a nominal shareholder of Assete Media. In relation to the records of the letter you referred to written by me, it is outdated and obsolete and there are documents to that effect.”

Buhari charges media to tone down reporting of Nigeria’s insecurity

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday cautioned Nigerian journalists on the reporting of the nation’s security challenges.

The President, according to a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, made the call in his Eid-ul-Maulud message to Nigerians.

The Federal Government had declared Tuesday as a public holiday to mark the Eid-ul-Maulud in the country.

The Eid-ul-Maulud is celebrated by Muslims across the world to mark the birthday of Holy Prophet Muhammed.

The President charged journalists to stop reporting that insecurity in the country was “rising” but “declining.”

He declared that security agencies are effectively tackling the security challenges in different parts of the country.

The statement read: “The President uses the occasion to give a snapshot of the increased activities the Armed Forces, Police Force, and intelligence agencies have embarked upon to effectively respond to the security challenges in the nation.

“He says the government fully expects and intends for these trends to continue, and calls on the media to address the tone, content, and standards of reporting into security and safety measures. Time has come to revise the prefixes ‘rising insecurity’ with ‘declining insecurity’.

“The President adds that increased cooperation and collaboration from the citizenry, coupled with reinvigorated, dynamic, and energised police, security and military leadership is helping the administration score more victories against terror, criminality, and economic sabotage. The reality of declining insecurity should replace the inaccurate narrative of rising insecurity in the country.

While there is work to do, the men and women in uniform who are helping the nation to achieve this goal, desire our collective appreciation and encouragement to do even more. The whole country and its mass communications systems have a duty in this regard.”
