He said Essang claimed he gave Uwakfon paracetamol and left for church only to return to meet her dead.

Levite said his mum doubted the story so she some relatives to Uwakfon’s house where they found her lifeless body with ”wounds all over and her neck broken.”

“My mum doubted his story because when she spoke with Uwakfon, she didn’t sound like one who was sick.

Some relatives went to my cousin’s house and found her lifeless body with wounds all over and her neck broken. We quickly invited the police and Godwin was arrested.”

“We need justice for Uwakfon Sunday Akpan,” Levite wrote.

20 Boko Haram members who surrendered die of Cholera

A cholera outbreak in Hajj camp where about 12,000 surrenders are currently kept in Maiduguri, Borno state’s capital, has led to the death of about 25 people including 20 surrendered Boko Haram fighters.

Daily Trust reported that seven of these people died on Tuesday September 20, while 14 other causalities were recorded in the Hajj camp on Wednesday September 21.

It was also learnt that health workers with the support of Non-Governmental Organisations and the World Health Organisation are battling to control the fatalities.

A source told the publication;

“At least 20 Boko Haram surrenders have died as a result of cholera outbreak in Hajj and four others died in Bama camp.

Also, three reportedly died in the Muna Garage IDP camp. Nearly 1,000 cases have been reported so far, and hundreds are currently receiving treatments in various health centres.”

A top ministry of health staff who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the incidents but claimed that only 11 repentant Boko Haram insurgents and three others in the Muna Garage IDP camp were killed by cholera, not 20 people.

The source added that the ministry and its partners are on top of the situation.

RCCG pastor sentenced to two years imprisonment for issuing $1.6m dud cheque

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has convicted and sentenced a pastor, Ayodeji Ibrahim Oluokun, to two years in prison.

The assistant pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), City of David Parish, Victoria Island, was jailed on Tuesday, September 21, 2022.

Oluokun’s conviction came, consequent on his arraignment by the Lagos Zonal Command of the EFCC, alongside his company, Peak Petroleum Industry Nigeria Limited, on an amended six-count charge bordering on issuance of dud cheques, stealing and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of $1.6 million on January 19, 2019.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, in her judgment, held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charge of issuance of a dud cheque against the defendants.

Taiwo, however, discharged and acquitted the defendants of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

“The defendant issued two cheques in the sum of 1.6 million dollars to the nominal complainant, which was dishonoured because there was no fund in the defendant’s account. Issuance of a cheque for lack of credit is a strictly liable offence,” said Taiwo.

“If the defendant was truly expecting some money till the end of July 2014 as claimed by him, he would have waited till he received the money before issuing the cheque on June 24, 2014,”

The judge said the first defendant knew all of these and still went ahead to issue the cheque dated June 24, 2014.

“It is hereby in the view of this court that the defendant was deliberate in issuing the dud cheque. He is hereby found guilty of counts one and two of issuance of dud cheque.

“The defendants, however, are discharged and acquitted of stealing and obtaining money under false pretences as the prosecution failed to establish the facts against them,” she said.

The judge thereafter sentenced the first defendant to two years in prison or payment of a fine of N2 million, and the second defendant to a fine of N2 million.

She ordered the convict to make restitution of 1.6 million dollars to the nominal complainant within 18 months.

The defence counsel, Mr Edoka Onyeke, in his allocutus, prayed the court to grant the convict a non-custodial sentence, adding that he was a pastor and could use his pastoral work as service to humanity, through community service.

“My lord, apart from the defendant being a first offender, if he is incarcerated, he will not be able to carry out the necessary things on behalf of the second defendant so as to make the restitution easy.

“The first defendant is a pastor of a church. This is a very good opportunity for him to engage in community service instead of a custodian sentence so as to preach the word of God.

On a final note, the defendant has promised to involve the nominal complainant in order to make the restitution,” Onyeke said.

Counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Samuel Daji, however, urged the court to convict the defendants as charged.

He argued that the convict and the nominal complainant had not been on talking terms, thereby making the terms of restitution difficult to meet.

He also prayed the court to order the defendant to forfeit his property in order to pay up the debt.

“My lord, from the evidence before this court, the defendant is not committed. It has been nine good years my lord. A dollar was N150 at the time the loan was granted to the defendant.

The defendant does not even greet the nominal complainant unless it is of utmost necessity. “There is an evidence that the defendants never want to settle this case.

The defence counsel said he is a pastor. My lord, the more reason he should be given a custodial sentence in order to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The court has stated mandatory sentence. We shall be asking for restitution. I shall be urging the court to order the defendant to forfeit his property so as to use it to pay his debt,” Daji said.

The EFCC counsel had submitted that the defendant issued a Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd. cheque of 1.6 million dollars payable to GOSL Nigeria Ltd.

He said when presented for payment, the cheque was dishonoured on the ground that there were no sufficient funds standing to the credit of the account on which the cheque was drawn.

The offences contravened Sections 1(1) (b) of the Dishonoured Cheques (Offences) Act, Cap D 11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and Section 285 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State and section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences.

Tiffany Haddish says she has lost all her jobs over molestation suit

Tiffany Haddish says she doesn’t have a single job after being accused of molestation, even though the lawsuit alleging that has been dismissed.

The actress spoke to TMZ on Wednesday, September 21, at the Los Angeles International Airport.

A certain Jane Doe had claimed that Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears roped her and her brother into inappropriate sexual skits as children.

The young woman has now dropped her claim. Despite dropping the claim, Tiffany tells TMZ that she has lost everything in the wake of this.

She said she is relieved now that the saga is over but noted her main concern was the actual accuser, as well as her brother.

Recall that Tiffany and Aries were accused of including the girl and her brother in filmed sketches when they were kids, In one of the sketches, Tiffany allegedly had the girl imitate fellatio on a sandwich and in another, her brother was allegedly the subject of a pedophile’s fantasy, played by Aries.

Tiffany denied it at first, calling it a shakedown, but she later expressed regret for her role.

Court order won’t stop negotiations with ASUU – Ngige

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment has said that the court order directing the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its strike will not prevent negotiations with the lecturers on their demands.

The Minister said this while receiving members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) in his office in Abuja.

Ngige also said “the government will order the vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors to reopen the universities in line with the court order.”

He said;

“The ruling is in the best interest of the nation. It is a win-win situation for all of us- government, students, lecturers- all Nigerians indeed.

I have just gotten the court order asking ASUU to go back to work. It is a sound judgment. It is no victor, no vanquished.

“You doctors in academics are for now members of ASUU, but, you are here, even though you have dissociated yourself and are working. We want to thank you for working and teaching your students.

“The court ruling does not preclude us from going on with further negotiation and consultations. The pro-chancellors met Mr. President and made some demands, such as topping up government offers and seeing whether there could be some bailout.

“Mr. President (Muhammadu Buhari) said in considering it, he will consult stakeholders. So, he is going to consult everybody.”

Villagers fleeing from bandits drown in Abuja

Five persons, comprising four male adults and a housewife, drowned while fleeing from bandits who stormed Chakumi village in Gurdi ward of Abaji area council of Abuja and attempted to kidnap them on Wednesday, September 21.

Daily Trust reports that the village chief of Chakumi, Mohammed Magaji, who confirmed the sad incident, said the bandits stormed the village at about 11 am.

Magaji stated that the deceased victims, including a middle-aged house wife were working on the farm, when they sighted the bandits.

He said they rushed to board the canoe in order to escape to neigboring Daku village, but in the process of trying to cross the river Gurara, the boat capsized.

“And even as I am talking to you right now, the corpses of the victims have not been recovered yet as fishermen from Daku and my village are still searching for the corpses” he said.

Magaji, who decried activities of bandits in the area, said farmers could no longer go to their farms over fear of being kidnapped by bandits.

Vice-Chairman of Abaji LGA, Ibrahim Abubakar, also confirmed the incident, disclosing that one of his relatives was among those who drowned.

“In fact, one of my relatives was among those that got drowned and their bodies are yet to be recovered up till this moment that I am talking to you,” he said

Nigerian students reject court judgement mandating ASUU to call off its 7 month strike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has kicked against a court judgment that mandated the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off its 7-month strike.

National Industrial Court of Nigeria today, September 21, ordered ASUU to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.

Reacting in a statement, NANS National Public Relations Officer, Giwa Temitope, referred to the ruling as a “black market judgment.”

Temitope said the ruling betrayed equity because the Federal Government ought not to drag the academic union before the court in the first place. The statement reads:

“Our attention has been drawn to news of a court judgment mandating the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its 7 month strike.

As an association, we feel disturbed to read the news of the judgment because we believe that it betrays equity.

“Ordinarily, the Federal Government is not meant to have dragged ASUU to court. But, the fact that they had to drag ASUU to court is a signal that this government cannot handle crisis.

And, we want to state categorically that the court cannot force members of ASUU back to lecture theatres. “And, as it stands today, with that court judgment, we maintain that the court has not resolved the problem and we reject the judgment in strong terms.

The court could have said that the Federal Government should go and pay rather than say that lecturers who are on strike should go back to classrooms.

We were expecting the court to have understood that lecturers are on contract of personal service hence, they cannot be compelled to render a service they don’t want to render.

“The only remedy to this strike action is for the Federal Government to accede to the demands of ASUU which the government willingly entered into with them and properly fund education.”

Police dare Nigerian students as armed officers take over Third Mainland Bridge to prevent another protest

The Lagos State Police Command has deployed officers to the Third Mainland Bridge to prevent another protest over the lingering ASUU strike.

The operatives, led by DPO of Adeniji Adele, CSP Lanre Edegbai, are keeping watch at both ends of the bridge days after the Nigerian Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) blocked Airport Road in Ikeja to protest the strike.

“We will not allow any person or group of persons deprive Lagosians of their Right to Freedom of Movement.

“Everyone’s rights must be respected!” Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said as he shared photos of officers on Third Mainland Bridge today, September 21.

BBC reporter Osasu Obayiuwana responded to Hundeyin’s tweet, writing: “The #Nigerian state, particularly @PoliceNG, is very good at suppressing protests involving people that have no weapons. But when it comes to confronting armed groups, they don’t seem to be as forceful and ‘courageous’.”

Hundeyin replied: “I hope you one day get caught up in traffic caused by protest & miss your flight/appointment/interview. Ambulances too get stuck. I would love to hear you castigate the police for allowing some people hold an entire road or area to ransom. Fortunately for you, we won’t allow it.”

Hundeyin added in another tweet: “Protest by all means. It’s very fine. Just don’t step on other people’s right to freedom of movement. Don’t block the roads. Move in an orderly procession. Students protested PEACEFULLY at UNILAG recently. We were on ground and never interfered.”

Nnamdi Kanu must not die in custody, Ohanaeze warns

Apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned the Federal Government against allowing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to die in custody of the Directorate of State Services (DSS).

This comes after his brother Emmanuel Kanu and attorney Ifeanyi Ejiofor had raised the alarm on Kanu’s health condition following a routine visit at the Department of State Service cell.

They said the Biafra leader is critically ill and has not been allowed access to his doctors by the DSS.

Ejiofor said Kanu “is currently suffering from gastrointestinal illness, which necessitates the constant use of antacids and other available medical treatments.”

“The DSS has refused to allow him to have even the smallest amount of prescribed painkiller, which could have given him short-term respite.”

Reacting in a statement titled, “Nnamdi Kanu Must Not Die in Prison,” Ohanaeze described the report as worrisome to any fair-minded patriotic Nigerian.

Signed by the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, the pan-Igbo body warned the Federal Government that nothing untoward should happen to Kanu in detention.

According to the statement, the group’s President General, Ambassador George Obiozor, has on several occasions advised President Buhari on Kanu’s issue beyond the courts or the use of force, stating that it requires a political solution.

The statement read,

“The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, and several eminent Igbo have repeatedly appealed to the heart of Mr President to release Nnamdi Kanu on the premise of a political solution.

The only living legend among those that fought for Nigeria’s independence and the Minister of Aviation in the First Republic, Chief Mbazulike Amechi, presented the request to Buhari when he visited Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as his last wish.

“Earlier before that, Mbazulike had also met the President in Aso Rock, Abuja for the same reason. In the interim, common sense will ask – why deny Nnamdi Kanu the necessary access to a medical doctor? This is very curious and raises a lot of questions.

“Finally, it is common knowledge that the incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu has rather contributed to the enormity of insecurity in the South-East and one wonders what will happen if, by the utter carelessness, negligence or unnecessary victimisation, something untoward happens to Nnamdi Kanu.”

House of Reps members lament as Nigeria’s debt reaches an all-time high of N42.84trn

Members of the House of Representatives have expressed concern over the rising debt profile of Nigeria which currently stands at N42.84 trillion.

A breakdown of the debt figures released by the Debt Management Office DMO shows that the bulk of the federal government borrowings were done domestically, with 72.53 percent being FGN bonds.

According to the DMO, Nigeria’s total public debt stock, comprising the debt obligations of the federal, state governments, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) rose by N1.24 trillion within three months, from N41.60 trillion ($100.07 billion) as at March 30, 2022 to N42.84 trillion ($103.31billion) by June 30, 2022.

The DMO also indicated that domestic debt stock for the review period stood at N26.23 trillion ($63.24 billion) due to new borrowings by the federal government to part-finance the deficit in the 2022 Appropriation (Repeal and Enactment) Act, including fresh borrowings by state governments and the FCT.

According to the DMO, Lagos state retained its top spot as the state with the highest debt stock with N797, 305,312,602.53 in its debt profile.

Delta State is second with N378, 878,236,830.75, followed by Ogun State with N241, 782,021,304.96; Rivers State, N225, 505,011,356.83; and Imo State, N210, 394,836,519.93.

Akwa Ibom was next on the debtors’ scale with N203, 951,611,822.07, while Jigawa retained its least-indebted state profile with 45,135,377,621.30, and Ebonyi State trailed with N59, 111,939,636.77.

Reacting to this development, Gbajabiamilia at resumption of plenary yesterday, expressed concerns over the rising debt profile of the country and crude oil theft.

Gbajabiamila stated that the concerns emerged from interactive sessions of the Senate and House Committees on Finance with the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the government on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP).

He said the issues emerged while considering the scope of deficit financing to be proposed in the new budget and the decline in crude oil production due to theft and sabotage.

Gbajabiamila said while the House appreciated that the current fiscal conditions necessitated borrowing to finance budgetary expenditures, there should be worry about the long-term effect of the debt burden on the country and the ability to pay in a responsible and sustainable way.

Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Tosin Kolade, who r@ped and murdered a 17-year-old girl, Ifeoluwa Apanpa, inside a church at Olodo area of Ibadan, the state capital.

The teenage girl was said to be on her way to church for service when the suspect under a false pretence sought her assistance in his own church that was close by.

The suspect who was paraded before the newsmen at the State Police Headquarter, Eleyele, Ibadan on Tuesday, September 20, said his mother is a member of the sanitation department in the Church, hence his access to the key of the church.

“On 17th September, 2022, I went back home from work around 1pm because we didn’t have work that day.

We were just sleeping at the shop. I told my boss that I wanted to go and ease myself, and he said I shouldn’t stay long,” he said.

“When I got home, i took the key of our church because my mum is the cleaner of the church and went to church. I packed all the chairs in the church together; I already knew the time Ifeoluwa will pass through our church to her own church.

She eventually came and I asked her to assist me to carry some of the chairs I packed. “I brought out the knife in my pocket and told her not to shout.

I wanted to scare her to collect her phone but she dragged the knife with me and the knife fell to the floor. She also fell down and hit her head on the floor while trying to escape.

She couldn’t stand up because she was weak, I r@ped her and took her phone. I requested for her password but she gave me the wrong password.

When I discovered, I strangulated her,” the suspect explained. Briefing newsmen on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Williams, spokesperson of the command, Adewale Osifeso said operatives attached to Iyana-Offa Divisional Police Headquarters were intimated about the sudden disappearance of the teenager who had left for church at about 2pm and was yet to return home.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the lifeless body of the deceased who was later found beside a Bible School at Olodo Area, with bloody genitalia, coupled with signs of struggling might have been manhandled before her eventual untimely death.

“In addition to the above, the Command has in its custody through diligent technological driven intelligence and investigation one Kolade Tosin ‘m’ 20yrs who has voluntarily confessed to committing the sinister action.

“Investigation continues as the case is closely monitored by the State Criminal Investigation Department with the assurances of immediate updates as soon as we have them at the disposal.”
