FG to inaugurate climate change council, targets zero-emission

The Federal Government has concluded plans to formally inaugurate the National Climate Change Council and its Secretariat, pursuant to the Climate Change Act 2021.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had in November 2021, signed the Climate Change Bill into law. This was the basis for the establishment of the climate change council.

A statement released by the presidency revealed the government’s approach to mobilising Nigerians to transition the country to a low-carbon economy and society in line with global best practices.

It read, “The Climate Change Act 2021, signed into law by President Buhari on November 2021, provides an overarching legal framework to achieve Nigeria’s long-term climate goals.

These goals include meeting Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions; among which is President Buhari’s pledge, at the COP 26, for Nigeria to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

“In addition to making provision for National Climate resilience, the Act institutionalises climate reporting, auditing, finance and funding through fiscal and other mechanisms and incentives, while also mainstreaming climate change actions into national development priorities, and imposing climate obligations, including reporting, on both public and private sector institutions.

“The act thus requires a whole-of-government approach to mobilise all Nigerians to transition our country to a low-carbon economy and society.

The NCCC is the implementing body charged with superintending the CCA and coordinating government and society in transitioning to a low carbon economy.

“Given the existential import if its mandate, it necessarily transcends any single government ministry, department or agency.

The council is thus a reflection of this. It comprises broad membership from government, organised labour, the private sector and civil society.

The NCCC is supported by a secretariat that is headed by a Director General.

“As part of the process of putting this implementing mechanism in to effect the government is aware of the need to promptly appoint a director general to lead the secretariat upon inauguration.

Hence the president’s directive to screen the recommended candidates, from whom the pioneer director general will be unveiled and announced.” The statement concluded

Los Angeles news anchor, Mark Mester has been fired after he slammed his own station on-air for how it handled his former co-anchor, Lynette Romero’s abrupt departure from the airwaves.

According to the Los Angeles Times, KTLA general manager Janene Drafs announced during a meeting in the newsroom that Mester had been fired.

The local news anchor’s page on KTLA now forwards to a page of the news team where Mester is no longer listed either.

On September 14, KTLA announced that Romero had decided to move on after nearly 24 years at the station and pursue another opportunity, despite the station hoping she would spend the rest of her career with them.

“KTLA worked hard to make that happen,” anchor Sam Rubin said during a broadcast.

“Lynette, we wish you luck, we miss you and we thank you for everything you’ve done for KTLA.… On behalf of everyone here, we wish you and your family nothing but the best.”

Following Romero’s exit, Mester spent a portion of his show September 17 going off-script to apologize on behalf of the station to the viewers, saying that the way it handled the resignation “was rude, it was cruel, it was inappropriate, and we are so sorry.”

“You did not deserve this,” Mester said, calling Romero his “best friend.’ “It was a mistake, and we hope you can find it in your heart to forgive us.”

Romero, an institution who was with the station for 24 years, left for another station after she unsuccessfully asked her bosses if she could work a weekday anchor shift instead of working on weekends, the LA Times reported.

Decomposed body of missing South African woman found under bed of neighbour who helped search for her

The decomposed body of a South African woman, was found under the bed of her neighbour who had been helping search for her.

33-year-old Annelise van Rooyen, had been missing since April 24, 2022 in Cape Town and was found on September 19.

The suspect, Jaun-Paul van der Westhuizen, 32, allegedly misled the family by saying he saw her in different places.

The decomposing body of the victim was found when the accused’s brother was looking for stolen items. For about five months the man allegedly attributed the sickening stench that his family and friends complained about to dead rats that he was struggling to find.

While speaking to cops, Van der Westhuizen allegedly incriminated his friends Florenzo Steyn, 31, and Marshall Baartman, 27.

They all appeared on a murder charge in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, September 22, 2022.

The prosecutor read the docket in court: “The deceased went missing in April, and she was found on 19 September.

Her body was under the bed of accused number one. It was decomposed. Accused number one made an admission to the captain that the deceased went to his home with accused two and three to smoke.

He wanted to have sex with the deceased who tried to run; they strangled her and then put her under the bed.

The State has indicated that they are opposing bail for all accused. The victim’s mom, Marlene, 53, says:

“This man has been coming to home, I treated him like a son. He helped us with the search and he would come and tell me that he saw Annie in Wynberg and other places and all along he knew what he did The heartbroken mom says her daughter was last seen walking to a nearby shop.

“We had been everywhere looking for her and then on Monday when Jaun-Paul’s brother was looking for stolen items in his bungalow he found the body and called people,” she explains.

“We knew it was her because of the top she wore the last time I saw her. I picked her clothes that morning.

She was not wearing the tights and shoes she had on.” Marlene also tells the Daily Voice that her daughter was mentally challenged.

“She had a mind of a child, if you complimented her top, she would have taken it off.

Jaun-Paul took advantage of that and took her away from her 16-year-old son.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg had confirmed that cops are investigating a murder case.

245 killed in Kaduna community attacks

The paramount ruler of the Atyap Chiefdom, Agwatyap, Dominic Yahaya, has raised the alarm that 245 locals have been killed while 623 houses were burnt in attacks within his domain in Zango-Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The monarch stated this on Wednesday at the Kaduna Catholic Social Centre during the commemoration of the International 2022 Peace Day organised by the Liturgy and Social Justice in Kaduna.

The ruler said, “The recurring attacks, which have become most distressful and disturbing as the alleged killers who are known to have lived among the communities, will often call names of their victims to notify them of their mission to kill before committing dastardly acts on the innocent and harmless farmers.

“The genesis, which many considered premeditated, started in early 2019 when isolated individual killings of farmers became rampant, and before we knew what was happening, about 14 of such incidents had occurred.

“This snowballed into a major crisis on June 16, 2020. Thereafter, massive attacks occurred in villages whereby people were killed and houses and property were burnt by herdsmen, which some uninformed people termed as farmer/herders clashes, whereas this narrative has been most painful as the attacks which occurred in the dead of the night left many communities desolate.”

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Kaduna State Peace Commission, Dr Saleh Mamale, while commenting on the International Peace Day, maintained that the socio-economic pursuit of individuals, communities and nations significantly varies over time and space, and the ability and/or inability to manage these diversities is the major driver of peace or violence.
