FG gazettes PCN law which would regulate all stakeholders in pharmacy distribution chain

A new pharmacy law which empowers the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) to regulate all stakeholders in the pharmacy distribution chain has been gazetted by the Nigerian government.

This was disclosed by chairman of the governing council of the organization, Prof. Ahmed Tijjani Mora, during the presentation of the gazetted PCN (Establishment) Act 2022 in Abuja on Monday October 10.

The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Bill which was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in August, empowers the registrar to revoke licenses and regulate all stakeholders involved in the pharmacy distribution chain such as pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, patent medicine vendors, manufacturers, importers, wholesalers among others.

Fines for offences in the old act ranged from N250- N1,000 but had been increased to between N250,000 and N2,000,000 in the new act.

The Federal High Court under the new law has the jurisdiction to hear and determine criminal and civil matters.

Mora said;

“The fines are meant to act as a deterrent for people not to fall short of the minimum standard expected from them. The council is a regulatory agency.

We are not a profit-making organisation and we are corrective, not punitive. We are dealing with drugs, which makes the difference between life and death. That is why we must be regulated.”

Atletico Madrid confirm permanent transfer of Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona

Atletico Madrid confirmed they have agreed on a deal to sign French striker Antoine Griezmann permanently from Barcelona, on a contract until 2026.

Griezmann has been on loan at Atletico since August 2021 after a difficult spell at Camp Nou, following his 120 million euro (116.5 million dollar) move in 2019.

“Griezmann has signed a deal that links him to our club until June 30, 2026,” said Atletico in a statement.

The 2018 World Cup winner was a key figure in coach Diego Simeone’s plans last season but has largely been reduced to substitute appearances in the current campaign as Atletico tried to escape paying a reported obligatory 40 million euro purchase fee if he played over a certain number of games.

Atletico and Barcelona negotiated a new deal with Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirming the fee during the club’s members’ assembly on Sunday. “It is for 20 million euros plus four more in variables,” said Laporta.

“There is another clause in the deal to sell the player, which is that if Atletico decide to sell him in the future they will have to pay us the difference that remains, up to the value of the 40 million which was agreed before.”

Griezmann has played 303 times for the club, scoring 144 goals, across his two stints in the capital.

He netted 35 goals in 102 appearances for Barcelona, winning the Copa del Rey there in 2021.

ASUU strike will be called off in days- Femi Falana

A Senior Advocate of Nigerian (SAN), Femi Falana has expressed optimism that the lingering strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will be called off in days and not weeks.

Falana who is the legal counsel of ASUU stated this during an interview with Channels TV on Monday, October 10.

Recall that last week, the Court of Appeal ordered the striking lecturers to return back to their classrooms before their appeal can be heard.

Falana said he will advise his clients accordingly once the certified true copy of the court order has been made available to him.

“The legal advice that I will give to my clients is confidential. But I can assure you that the strike will soon be called off.

Advising clients to call off a strike is the most difficult aspect of my practice. On one occasion, Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN) and I spent six hours persuading Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and other NLC (Nigeria Labour Congress) to call off a strike in compliance with a court order.

Our advice to ASUU will be based on the court order and other relevant reports.

I am reasonably confident that the consultations between the House and the Presidency will yield positive results in the interest of the striking lecturers and the students” he said

University lecturers in public universities have been on strike since February 14, 2022, over poor welfare and unpaid earned academic allowances.

After several failed attempts to resolve the issues, the Federal government took ASUU to the National Industrial Court where they secured an injunction ordering the striking lecturers back to work.

ASUU approached the court of appeal Abuja but their appeal was thrown out last week Friday, October 7.

Former PDP secretary Olisa Metuh asks the party to issue a disclaimer against Reno Omokri’s posts

Former secretary of the PDP, Reno Omokri has asked the Peoples Democratic Party to issue a disclaimer against former presidential aide, Reno Omokri’s posts.

Metuh made the call while quoting Reno Omokri’s post targeted against supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Omokri had written;

You rage against Tinubu. You insult his ethnicity (who are the most accommodating people in Nigeria and perhaps Africa). You accuse him of using MC Oluomo. You say Obi is far better than Tinubu. You say Obi will turn Nigeria into paradise. Yet, you remain in Lagos and refuse to leave Lagos for the paradise that Obi created in Anambra! The only reason I am against Tinubu is because as a drug lord, he can be blackmailed by foreign intelligence services. Otherwise, he performed as Lagos Governor. If you maintain that Obi did better than Tinubu, prove it by packing your kaya and relocate to Anambra!

Reacting to this, Metuh stated that while Omokri is not a member of the Presidential Campaign team, his closeness to PDP’s Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his open support for the party may mislead people to believe his posts represents the views of the Party.

He also said that while the former presidential aide had agreed on issue-based campaign, he is reneging on the promise he made.

Metuh wrote;

The time has come for the Peoples Democratic Party to issue a disclaimer to Reno Omokri’s posts.

Whilst he is not a member of the Presidential Campaign team, his closeness to the Presidential candidate and his open support for the party may mislead people to believe his posts as representating the views of the Party.

There is no way any responsible or respectable democrat can condone such insensitivity. We did not join politics to mock or disparage any set of individuals, least of all a whole tribe.

The founding fathers of the PDP had noble ideals and its ideals and values should not be desecrated by any individual, on the altar of a false strategy to engineer hatred against any tribe or stroke an ethnic contest.

I spoke with Reno yesterday morning and he agreed on issue based campaign only, this is a complete negation of that promise.We all should insist on an issue based campaign.
