Lagos state government orders coroner inquest into death of IVD

The Lagos state government has ordered a coroner inquest into the cause of death of Bimbo Ogboona, wife of auto dealer Ikechukwu Ogbonna.

Bimbo died of burns sustained from a fire incident at their home in Lekki, Lagos on October 15. It was widely reported that the late Bimbo and her husband IVD were involved in a brawl at their home, which eventually led to her death.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, gave the directive for a coroner inquest in a statement released. He said that a thorough investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause of Bimbo’s death.

The commissioner noted that as a government, the security and well-being of citizens were of utmost importance while assuring the public that everything will be done to ensure that the cause of death is known.

He also said findings of the investigation would be made public in due course and appropriate sanctions meted out to anyone found culpable, the Lagos State Government said.

“A coroner’s inquest has immediately been requested, in line with Section 14 and 15 of the Coroners’ Systems Law, Laws of Lagos State 2015, to determine the cause and circumstances of death.By Section 14(1)(d) of the Coroners’ System Law of the State:

“A report of death shall be made to any of the agencies for the report of death or the office of the Coroner and be subject to post-mortem examination where there is reasonable cause to believe that the cause of death was: violent, unnatural or suspicious.Section 15(1) and (9) further enjoins the Coroner to hold an inquest whenever he or she is informed that the death of the deceased person was in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation or believes an inquest is desirable following the report of a reportable death” he said

The attorney-general also charged the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, to assist the Police and other law enforcement agencies in investigating the case and ascertaining the cause of death of the late Bimbo which had attracted wide media attention.

UI lecturer reacts to reports he gave $100 to students who attended his first class after ASUU strike

A lecturer at the University of Ibadan has denied giving $100 each to the 10 students that attended his first class.

Students had gone on Twitter to claim that the lecturer had his first class after the end of the ASUU strike and only 10 students showed up so the lecturer rewarded them with foreign currency.

The lecturer has now reacted on Twitter. “This is not in any way true,” Bisi Olawuyi tweeted in reaction to the claim.

Trailer skids off bridge along Ibadan-Ife expressway

A trailer skidded off the Ibadan-Ife expressway bridge in the early hours of today October 25.

The trailer was said to have suffered brake failure when it rammed through the bridge rails and barrier and almost fell into the river.

It is however not clear if there was any casualty or injured person.

Lagos puts Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island residents on red alert over flood Waterfront residents of highbrow Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island as well as coastal areas of Epe and Badagry have been alerted by the Lagos state government to be wary of back flow due to the high tide in Lagos Lagoon.

The advisory was issued by Lagos state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Commissioner Tunji Bello.

Bello who revealed that the high tide of the lagoon had made it difficult for storm run-off from the various channels to discharge effectively into the lagoon, added that this might in turn cause stagnation into the streets and major roads until the lagoon recedes to allow for a discharge of the channels.

Residents of the affected areas on Lagos Island and other coastal areas have been directed to monitor the incidental rains regularly, ensure situational awareness at all times, refrain from dumping refuse into the drains and clean their tertiary drains regularly.

Bello reiterated the earlier flood advisory issued by the state government to the effect that all those on the banks of Ogun River, especially residents of Ketu, Alapere, Agric, Owode Onirin, Ajegunle, Alagbole, Kara, Isheri, Olowora, Araromi, Otun Orisha community, Agiliti, Maidan, Mile 12, Odo Ogun, Owode Elede, Agboyi I, Agboyi II, and Agboyi III, to remain vigilant at these periods.

The commissioner also revealed that the state government had embarked on massive drainage clearing and the construction of new channels, besides continuous deployment of the quick response Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to free up manholes and black spots to ensure optimum capacity of the drains to contain run-offs.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has appealed to residents to remain calm following the security alerts issued by the UK and US embassies.

Muhammad Sule, Director of Information and Communication of the FCTA in a statement released after a security meeting convened by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Bello, said measures have been taken to sustain the current state of security and prevent any breach.

The statement read;

“As part of proactive measures, the minister of the federal capital territory, Malam Muhammad Bello, convened an emergency security meeting where issues concerning the security alert given by some embassies in Abuja to their citizens were exhaustively discussed and measures taken to sustain the current state of security and prevent any breach.

“The minister, during the meeting, charged the security agencies to do all within their powers to protect FCT residents from being harmed by criminals and other unscrupulous elements.

“The administration has not authorised the closure of any school; accordingly, the schools that have closed should, therefore, reopen forthwith.”

Residents and visitors to the FCT were asked to go about their legitimate businesses without any fear as security agencies are working to ensure their safety.

Residents were also urged to cooperate at all times with the security agencies by volunteering useful and timely information that would assist in nipping any form of criminality in the bud.

Body of 13-year-old boy swept away by flood recovered in Abuja

The body of a 13-year-old boy, Tosin Faisal Otun, has been recovered four days after he was swept away by flood in Abuja.

According to the victim’s sister, Toyosi, the incident happened when the victim was sent to get a goat tied beside a drainage channel close to their house along SCC Road in the Bwari area of Abuja.

Shortly after the incident, Toyosi took to Twitter to announce that he was missing.

“Pls, help find my brother. His name is Tosin Faisal Otun, a 13-year-old. He was swept away by water on Friday around 4pm, 14th October, 2022. Pls, retweet till we find him.”

Confirming the development to Punch on Monday, October 24, Toyosi said her brother might have slipped in the process of untying the goat while it rained heavily in their community.

“He was sent on an errand to bring our goat into the compound. I think he tied the goat close to the drainage. So, he went to get the animal when rain started. I think he slipped,”

The deceased’s father, Adewale, said the corpse was found four days after the incident, adding that they hired the services of divers to search for him.

“The reason why the information was tweeted then was that when the flood swept him away, we could not find his corpse.

Eventually, four days after, we were able to find his corpse and he has been buried. The incident happened around 4pm.” he said.

Suspected smugglers kill Customs officer, injure three others in Kwara

An officer of the Nigerian Customs Service was killed by suspected smugglers while on patrol on Sinau-Kenu Road in Baruteen Local Government Area of Kwara.

Customs spokesman in Kwara, Mr Chado Zakari, who confirmed the the incident in a statement in Ilorin on Monday, October 24, 2022, said the the Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) Sector 3 of the service were ambushed on Friday.

According to him, the group of hoodlums shot sporadically and pelted the personnel with other dangerous items while in transit having evacuated some abandoned thirty jerry cans of PMS and forty bags of rice. However, one of the Officers paid the supreme price while three others, sustain various varying degrees of injury and are being treated in an undisclosed hospital.

Zakari said the deceased, ASCI Saheed Aweda has been buried according to Islamic rites in his home town, Popogbona in Ilorin West Local Government of Kwara State.

“JBPT Sector 3 operatives on information patrol along Sinau-Kenu Road in Baruten LGA of Kwara State intercepted 40 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 50kg each, and 30 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit, 25 litres each, abandoned on the bush path, Sinau-Kenu Road,: the statement read.

“The operatives immediately swung into action and removed the seized items into their operational vehicles for onward delivery to a government warehouse for safe-keeping in line with rules of engagement.

While on transit, a group of hoodlums laid ambush and attacked our personnel with guns, stones, bottles, cutlasses, sticks, charms and other dangerous items.

“The hoodlums shot sporadically at the officers. In the fiery exchange that ensued, one of our officers succumbed to the cold hands of death, while three officers sustained life-threatening injuries and are currently responding to treatment in a hospital.”

He said Comptroller Olugboyega Peters, Representatives of DSS, NPF, ONSA, NIA, Immigration and other security agencies have visited the family of the deceased to commiserate with them and prayed for the deceased officer whose sacrifice is deeply appreciated and held in high esteem.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) Compt. Olugboyega Peters has ordered a full-scale investigation to fish out the criminals who perpetuated the inhuman aggression.

“This trend of unprovoked attacks by faceless cowards whose intention is to instil fear in the minds of law enforcement operatives shall not go unpunished.

Neither will it dampen the resolve of officers and men from carrying out their statutory functions.” the statement reads.

While thanking the intervention and reinforcements from JBPT Headquarters Team, JBPT Ilesha Baruba, Kwara Command, Customs Police and 224 Recce Battalion of the Nigeria Army for swift action, he states that the Sector will continue to prosecute the anti-smuggling crusade despite the unwarranted attacks.

Appeal Court reserves judgment in FG’s stay-of-execution request in Nnamdi Kanu’s case

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reserved judgment in an application by the Federal Government seeking a stay of execution of the court’s judgment that ordered the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The federal government had in the application alleged that Kanu constituted a huge threat to national security and must be kept in detention for peace in the country.

It was also alleged that Kanu was a flight risk and would escape out of the country if the judgment which ordered his release was not stayed.

Justice Haruna Tsanami who presided over the application on Monday October 24, said a date for delivery of judgment would be communicated to the parties when ready.

IGP orders FCT Commissioners to re-strategize security management, launches “Operation Darkin Gaggawa” in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has reassured Nigerians and all other residents and visitors in the country that it will effectively review the United States of America Embassy in Abuja’s security advisory which was issued, widely circulated, and published by the media on October 23rd, 2022, indicating an elevated risk of terror attacks in the country, particularly in the capital city of Abuja.

Both the UK and the US embassies released security advice to their nationals in Nigeria, warning them of a possible terrorist attack in Nigeria, especially the FCT.

A statement released by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, says a review of the advisory is necessary due to the fact that Police, as the lead agency in internal security, will not take any threat intelligence, either actionable or not, for granted; thus, there is no cause for alarm as all hands are on deck to collectively nip threats in the bud.

”The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc, CFR, has however ordered the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory, heads of tactical squads domiciled in the FCT, and other State Command CPs to restrategize security management within their jurisdictions, as the Force Headquarters will continually avail them with required support, logistics, and deployments necessary for providing safety to all and sundry in Nigeria.

While the NPF will continually work with other security agencies to make every part of Nigeria safe, especially the FCT.

In furtherance of his zeal and strategies to decimate activities of non-state actors and other criminal elements in the FCT and other parts of the country, and to analyze and de-escalate threats gathered from various intelligence at the Force’s disposal, U.S advisory inclusive, the IGP has announced the immediate commencement of a Counter Terrorism Incident Simulation Exercise codenamed “Operation Darkin Gaggawa” will hold within the Force Headquarters and the Police Officers Wives Association School opposite the Force Headquarters, Abuja, between Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th October, 2022.

The exercise will involve diversion of traffic, use of blank ammunition, and other operational manpower and assets, and is designed to improve interoperability and synergy between different Units and Formations of the Force in response to terrorist incidents and other violent crimes. The NPF thereby urges the general public not to panic at the sounds of explosives and gunshots during the exercise.” the statement in part reads

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) has warned Nigerians against panic buying of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas.

The warning is coming after last week Monday’s Force Majeure declared by Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) over the recent flooding incidence that impacted its operation in the Southern part of Nigeria.

NALPGAM President, Mr Oladapo Olatunbosun, made the appeal on Sunday, October 23.

The President said that “Based on information reaching the Association; NLNG has not shut down its production facility in Bonny as rumoured.

He confirmed that NLNG on Thursday, October 20, 2022 had shipped a cargo of LPG for the domestic market.

He said that the dedicated vessel for shipment of LPG from the NLNG Plant in Bonny, “Alfred Temile”, arrived in Lagos on Thursday to discharge product.”

“The public should know that the supply of LPG from NLNG has not stopped. “We should not give opportunity for further price hike due to speculated shortage of the product.

We are already in hard times with the Russian/Ukraine war causing upset in the markets and the scarcity,” he advised.

The President said that NLNG has assured the Association that it will keep producing LPG based on the feed-gas it receives from its gas suppliers, adding that production was expected to pick up after the flood recedes.

He cautioned middlemen in the value chain not to take advantage of the hysteria in the market as a result of the flood which has also hampered the distribution of the production across the nation.

Motorcycle association to begin digital identification of okada riders

The Riders and Owners of Motorcycle Association of Nigeria (ROMAN) say plans are being made to issue digital identification to its members in a bid to check criminality among members.

Speaking on Sunday, October 23, during a sensitisation meeting at Karu, federal capital territory (FCT), Olusola Razaq, national president of the association, said the development would help to regulate the activities of commercial motorcyclists and prevent outright bans by the federal and state governments.

He said his leadership had already hired an ICT firm to conduct a digital image capture of every member across the country for proper identification.

He said:

“The reason we are here is to inaugurate the FCT executive ahead of the national reforms as ordered by the federal government.

“And like I said, we have gotten a company that will create a database for our members to ensure proper identification of all members since there are other existing unions across the country.”

Razaq said preparations were being made to ask the national assembly to draft a national regulation act for the association.

He continued:

“Days are gone when okada riders are used for political thuggery. “Of course, we know that the new Electoral Act does not give room for such anymore.

“So our efforts now is to ensure that okada riders are well sensitised like every other Nigerian who can also live their normal lives like good citizens of this country.

“We are also negotiating with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) on the issue of members getting their number plates, to stop disobeying road rules, avoid road crashes and sudden deaths.

“We are also doing this to help millions of Nigerians get out of poverty because many families have waited for white-collar jobs endlessly.

“So, what I am saying is that commercial motorcyclists have contributed and is still contributing to providing employment for youths.

“It will also interest you to know that we have set up a national task force in each state we operate to ensure compliance.”

DSS calls for calm, says nothing new in US warning

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reacted to the security alert issued by the US Embassy in Nigeria to Americans alerting them of possible attacks in Abuja.

The United States embassy in Nigeria had on Sunday October 23, warned Americans in the country to be cautious of their movement in response to “elevated risk of terror attacks,” specifically in Abuja.

“There is an elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria, specifically in Abuja. Targets may include, but are not limited to, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations.”

“The U.S. Embassy will offer reduced services until further notice. Actions to Take: Avoid all non-essential travel or movement. Stay alert. Avoid crowds.

In a security alert issued on Sunday, the US advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel or movement, stay alert and avoid crowds,” the embassy said in a statement posted on its website.

Reacting to the security alert, the DSS in a statement released by its spokesperosn Peter Afunanya, said it has repeatedly issued similar warnings in the past, while advising Nigerians to be cautious and work with other security agencies to maintain the peace.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) has received several enquiries relating to the security advisory issued by the US Embassy in Abuja, 23/10/22. The public may recall that the Service had variously issued similar warnings in the past.

While advising that necessary precautions are taken by all and sundry, the populace is enjoined to remain alert and assist security agencies with useful information regarding threats and suspicious criminal acts around them.

Meanwhile, the Service calls for calm as it works with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to maintain peace and order in and beyond Abuja,” the statement read

Gunmen abduct 13 villagers from Niger Community

13 villagers have been abducted by gunmen who attacked Maijaki village in Birnin Maza/ Tashibo ward of Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State in the early hours of Friday, October 21.

The gunmen carried out the attack around 1am on Friday, and it was also learnt that they shot one of the villagers.

Sources told Channels Television that tension is still high in the community following the attack and they called for urgent security presence to forestall calm and stability in the area.

It was reliably gathered that the criminals are currently occupying Kpashimi Forest where they hide to perpetuate their evil act at any targeted community especially of recent, with AK-47 riffles.
