Lagos state govt denies barring LASTMA officials from arresting erring motorists

The Lagos state government has denied reports claiming it has barred men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) from arresting erring motorists in the state.

Reports that traffic officials have been barred from arresting drivers who contravene traffic laws in the state went viral some days ago.

However, a statement released by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the reports are untrue and that LASTMA officials will continue to discharge its duty of ensuring the free flow of traffic and enforcing the laws against violators of road traffic regulations.

”The motoring public is, therefore, advised to ignore the fake news trending on some social media platforms that the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has warned LASTMA officials not to arrest any motorist.

‘The statement purported to have emanated from Mr. Governor reads:

“Henceforth, no LASTMA Official should arrest any motorist, either commercial or private. The duty of LASTMA is to manage traffic and not to arrest anyone. I have heard a lot of complaints, any official that violates the rule will be severely dealt with”, which is untrue and a mere fabrication.

This fake news which has been debunked severally before it resurfaced on social media platforms, was ostensibly designed to pitch the public, especially motorists, against officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

For the avoidance of doubt, the State Government is not contemplating the withdrawal of the power to enforce traffic law against erring motorists, as it believed that public education and enlightenment should be complemented by the enforcement of rules and regulations to ensure sanity on our roads.” the statement read in part

Abutu said;

“I can confirm to you that these hoodlums carrying two kegs filled with petrol and also armed with cutlasses and other weapons came to burn down the assembly at the wee hours of today (Friday).

“The intention they had was that police had left the place, because our patrol vehicles had been withdrawn from the two gates. They thought the place was no longer under security cover. They came through a section of of the complex, but they were resisted.

“The operatives of the RRS gave them a hot chase into the bush and recovered two kegs filled with petrol from them, among other dangerous exhibits.

Four persons were killed and three others injured when a car rammed into a cement-laden truck on the Abeokuta – Sagamu expressway.

The spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, made this known through a press statement he issued in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital on Friday November 18.

He said the accident which occurred around 7:18 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2022, involved a Toyota Sienna car with registration number, AAA 307 GN and a Sino truck with registration number WDL 418 XA.

Mr Akinbiyi blamed the accident on overspeeding on the part of the driver of the Toyota Sienna car, coupled with the smoke emitting from the truck, which also had no rear light.

“We learnt that the Sienna car coming inbound Abeokuta was driving behind the Dangote truck when it ran into the truck from behind, due to excessive speed and the inability of the driver to ascertain the fact that a vehicle was in its front, coupled with the smoke emitting from the truck, which also had no rear light.

“All the four occupants in the Sienna vehicle lost their lives, the driver escaped with no injury experienced. The remaining three victims were in the truck,” he said.

Mr Akinbiyi said the corpses had been deposited at the Ogun State General Hospital morgue in Ijaiye, Abeokuta, while the injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in the capital city for treatment.

While commiserating with the families of the dead victims, the TRACE spokesperson warned drivers of articulated vehicles to always make safety their watch word.

Police arrest woman for allegedly torturing 11-year-old maid to death in Jos

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested the woman who allegedly tortured an 11-year-old girl, Margaret Joshua, to death in Jos.

Spokesperson of the command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the development to newsmen in a statement on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

The PPRO said the suspect, a mother of two and a microbiologist at the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom (NVRI) Plateau, Mrs Nnamaka Nwachukwu, forced the minor to sit in a bowl of hot water, which resulted in severe injuries in her buttocks and private part.

The suspect, who resides in K-Vom, Jos south LGA, was said to have inflicted injuries on the body of the minor until she died from the torture.

The victim is said to be a native of Kebbi state, who escaped her community over insecurity, and was brought to Jos by a presumed helper who gave her out as a maid to the suspect.

The suspect allegedly beat the minor constantly and refused to register her in school despite promising to enrol the victim.

The police spokesperson said the case is currently being investigated, adding that the suspect would be charged to court soon. Grace Pam, coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Plateau, who followed up on the case, said the injuries on the body of the minor showed she was subjected to torture.

The suspect claimed the girl fell on her own into the bowl of hot water and ran out of the house without her knowing her whereabouts for more than 24hrs.

Pam said the girl was found in the building (pictured) and taken to the K-Vom police station, before she was moved to the hospital where she died hours later.

“Our attention was called about the situation on Monday, by a staff of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), who said that an 11-year-old girl had been seriously beaten up and injured by her guardian,”

Pam said.

“On getting to the hospital, we saw several old and new scars, and injuries on her entire body. We were told that she was taken to Mandela hospital in K-Vom, but was referred to JUTH due to the severity of her wounds.

“When we met the suspect at the police station where she was initially detained, she claimed that the girl used to masturbate, and so she was beating her to serve as punishment to make her stop.

“She claimed she did not know what used to come over her each time she beats the girl because she quickly regrets it after the act.

“The suspect also claimed that the deceased fell into hot water after which she ran out of the house and did not return for almost 24 hours.”

Also commenting on the issue, Keneng John, a neighbour to the suspect, said it was not the first time the minor was tortured by her guardian, adding that they have reported the case to the police on several occasions.

John added that the suspect had been instructed by the police to return the minor many times but she refused.
