Man allegedly stabs his wife to death during an argument over water in Lagos

The police in Lagos have arrested a 49-year-old man identified as Lawrence Itape for allegedly stabbing his wife, Rebecca Itape, 47, to death at their home in Seaside estate, Badore in Ajah on Monday, December 5.

Preliminary investigations showed that the couple had a disagreement over water. The argument degenerated into a fight and in the process, Lawrence allegedly used the kitchen knife to stab his wife in the neck.

The matter was reported to the police at Langbasa who effected Mr Itape’s arrest. The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at a mortuary in Yaba.

Police sources say the man has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department SCIID, Panti and will be charged to court as soon as possible.

Gunmen abduct corps member and seven others in Abuja

A corps member simply identified as Adenike, and seven others have been abducted by suspected kidnappers in Extension 2 Relocation, along Arab Road, Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Tuesday night, December 6.

Punch reports that Adenike who is currently observing the mandatory National Youth Service, was kidnapped in her father’s home.

A source was quoted as saying that two others escaped while they were being whisked away through the hills by the kidnappers. “Adenike, the landlord’s only daughter who’s currently doing her NYSC has been kidnapped.

We’re confused now because several others are also missing.Seven others were kidnapped alongside Adenike. But two others, among the ten earlier kidnapped, escaped and are safe now.” the source said

The gunmen attacked a residence in the Extension 2 Relocation, along Arab Road, in Kubwa, and shot two males, with one of the gunshot victims dying on the spot, while the other was rushed to the hospital.

The gunmen shot sporadically at Amilonania Street and later moved to Toyin Street.

“We heard gunshots twice when they first stormed a house at Amilonania Street. They’re now at Toyin Street, at the last house by the hill. They shot a tailor, Abel, popularly known as Oshodi, and he’s lying down dead.

They also shot another male, but we have taken him to the Kubwa General Hospital at Phase 4, but he was unconscious. The gunmen escaped through the hill.”

Another source said The FCT police command is yet to comment on this development.

Police recover SUV with engine running under Otedola Bridge

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos State Police Command have recovered an SUV, 4matic GL 450 under Otedola bridge.

According to the statement on the RRS Facebook page, the car with the registration number KUJ 384 LY, was recovered by the officials on patrol at about 10:00 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2022.

“The car’s engine was running and driver’s side door opened with no occupant. In the car were travelling bags and laptop,” the statement read.

“The Commander RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi has directed the decoy team to commence preliminary investigation immediately.

“Whoever has information about the owner of the vehicle should kindly contact RRS HQ, Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja.”

Reality TV star, Jumoke Adedoyin, popularly known as JMK, has been called to the Nigerian Bar.

JMK shared the news via her Instagram page on Tuesday with pictures of herself dressed in the ceremonial wig and gown.

“Officially a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Z. J. Adedoyin Esq. LL.B (Hons), B.L (Hons),” the excited new wig wrote.

The former Big Brother Naija housemate said her new feat has strengthened her belief that she can be anything she desires.

“I can be JMK the reality tv star, JMK the CEO, and now JMK the BARRISTER! A multifaceted Esq, who sets her mind to anything and gets it done,” she said.

“It has proven to me that I can’t be tied down by people’s timeline and everything happens within God’s perfect plan. He perfected it as he always does and now I am certain I am only going to walk in the path he has created specially for me.

FG orders redeployment of prison officers who ‘cannot shoot to kill’ to female prisons

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola has ordered the Nigerian Correctional Service to redeploy prison officers who ‘cannot shoot to kill’ to female prisons.

Aregbesola gave the directive on Monday, December 5, while unveiling of the new service logo and uniforms and the commissioning of a new staff quarters, ICT infrastructure and operational vehicles at the Service headquarters.

The Minister who rewarded twenty-five personnel who displayed gallantry to repel a bandits’ attack on a custodial facility in Niger State at the event, commended them for their act of gallantry.

He also expressed dismay that some personnel in other custodial centres chickened out when faced with attacks by criminals.

Aregbesola stated that the custodial centres are now red zones and personnel should shoot to kill whenever an intruder attempts an attack.

He said;

“Riffles are not for play, they’re meant to kill criminals. Any officer that cannot shoot to kill, any lilly-liver officer that cannot shoot on the head should be trained or replaced.

“Criminals should not sustain injuries. Those people who cannot shoot to kill, if you don’t want to dismiss them, redeploy them to female prisons.

“People who will be in maximum and medium custodial centres must be tough.

“We’ve had too many embarrassing attacks and we must put a stop to it.” He also said that most of those wrecking havoc in the South-East region of the country are escapees from the custodial centres in Imo State.

The Minister further added that anyone who tries to attack any custodial centre should pay the supreme price going forward.

Fraudster arrested with 31 ATM cards in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 44-year-old suspect, Michael Joseph, for attempted fraud and recovered 31 Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards of different banks in his possession.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, December 5, 2022, said that Joseph, of Gada Biyu, Jos Plateau State was arrested by detectives attached to the B’ Divisional Police headquarters.

According to the PPRO, the suspect specialises in defrauding people by swapping their ATM cards and withdrawing money from their accounts.

“Reports available at the Command’s disposal indicated that on the 30th November 2022 at about 1320hrs that on the same date at about 1054hrs Salome Aliyude ‘f’ of Yandoka Barracks, Bauchi went to the first bank main branch situated along Banks Road for a transaction,” the statement read.

“While at the ATM queue, the suspect insisted to know the type of ATM card she was using for the transaction.

In this manner, she was not comfortable with his curiosity and she quickly reported him to the bank securities.

“Following this development, an investigation was instituted where the suspect found in his possession thirty-one Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards of different banks.

“On interrogation, the suspect revealed he hails from Benue State, and came to Plateau state for seeking a job. He has been a bus driver for 3yrs in Jos, Plateau State.

He was introduced to the fraud activity by one Magaji ‘m’ of Kano State when they met at a beer parlor in Jos, Plateau State.

“It was revealed that the suspect gathered ATM cards from different banks and went to a nearby bank and hunt for a help-seeking person who cannot operate ATM.

“The suspect easily gets the ATM card pin of his victim when he assisted a non-consenting person with an ATM transaction, where he quickly swaps the victim’s ATM card with old an ATM card from the same bank in his possession.

“Further investigation revealed that the suspect had successfully defrauded the sum of eighteen thousand naira (N18, 000.00) of his first victim at Access Bank Plc, while the second victim defrauded twenty-five (N25, 000.00) at Micro Finance Bank, all in Plateau State.

“As the suspect succeeded at two distinct fraudulent activities, he decided to fly to Bauchi State in a bit to further his fraudulent activities but met his waterloo when he attempted to defraud a lady at the First Bank ATM gallery situated at banks road, Bauchi.

The investigation is in progress after which the suspect will be charged in court.”

ECOWAS Needs Urgent Action Plan Against Terrorism in West Africa- President Buhari

Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari, has called for quick implementation of ECOWAS action plan against terrorism and other crimes in West Africa.

The president, who canvassed this position in his welcome address at the 62nd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, yesterday, stressed that there is the urgent need to fully bring into operation, the regional action plan in the fight against terrorism and other acts of criminality in the sub-region.

According to him, this move would guarantee enhanced safety aimed at sustaining national governance efforts that would ensure the growth and progress of the West African sub-region.

He called on the new management team at ECOWAS Commission led by Dr. Omar Alieu Toure, to complete the review and harmonisation of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the sub-regional body.His words:

“The Commission must, therefore, work assiduously to complete the review and harmonisation of the Protocols on Good Governance and Democracy, as this would enable our sub-region to sustain our collective efforts to deepen, not only democracy but her dividends through good governance to the community citizens.”

Welcoming fellow regional leaders, President Buhari noted that this year’s summit was the 8th that Nigeria, under his leadership has hosted.

“All of those occasions, including this one, have brought honour and respect to my country as Nigeria continues to be at the centre of sustained solidarity and collaborative efforts to maximise our relationships in order to address common challenges to our countries and the community’s citizens,” he said.

The president paid tribute to his Ghanaian counterpart, Kuffour Addo-Nana, the immediate past Chairperson of the Authority for his services and congratulated President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, on assuming the leadership of the sub-regional organisation, expressing his confidence in the latter’s ability to “discharge his responsibilities to the sub-region, as well as meet the expectations of the Community citizens.”

Buhari thanked fellow leaders for the support he received as the Regional Champion on COVID-19 at a time the pandemic ravaged the entire world, ascribing the successes recorded in the region to their cooperation.

“Let me specifically thank you, brother heads of state and government, for the confidence you reposed in me to be the Regional Champion on COVID-19, an opportunity that brought me to working closely with sectoral ministers, ECOWAS commission as well as the West Africa Health Organisation to develop regional mechanisms that mitigated the effects of the COVID-19.

“Without doubt, the commitment shown by member-states yielded very positive results as West Africa emerged as one of the regions with the least mortality rate, not only on the continent, but globally,” he declared.

The president, however, lamented that despite the efforts of ECOWAS leaders towards deepening democracy, the region suffered some unpleasant setbacks.

“Regrettably, some of our gains, especially, in fully democratizing our governance space, have faced and continue to face severe challenging threats from unconstitutional change of government as witnessed in Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea,” he said.

Earlier, at the official ground-breaking ceremony of the new ECOWAS Headquarters Building, Buhari expressed appreciation to the government of the People’s Republic of China, “for their financial and technical contribution to ensuring that a monument of this nature, is built on behalf of our region.”

The building, to be named the EYE OF WEST AFRICA, with an expected completion period of 26 months, would house the three major ECOWAS Institutions, namely the ECOWAS Commission, the Community Court of Justice and the Parliament.

According to the President, “We have waited for this day, since 10th of July, 2019, when ECOWAS and the People’s Republic of China signed an implementation agreement for this diplomatic gift to the West African States.

“The new complex would represent the unity and brotherhood of the Member-States, as well as signify a re-commitment to progress and regional integration. It will be our home and a regional rallying point.”

In his remarks, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Cui Jianchun, said, “To sponsor and construct the new ECOWAS Headquarters is a vivid reflection of China’s support to the work of ECOWAS as well as the traditional friendship between China and the West African countries.

“We will continue to promote the common development of China and Africa, and are ready to make new contribution to the building of the China-Africa community with shared future in the new era.”

AAUA students and lecturer run for their lives after their classmates dressed as bandits storm their class for a presentation on terrorism

Students and a lecturer of the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba in Ondo state recently ran for their lives after some of the students in their class came in dressed as terrorists for a presentation they were having on terrorism.

The students who dressed in military camouflage and had their faces covered while carrying “guns”, came into the lecture room for their presentation.

The lecturer and the students said they thought they were under attack, making everyone scamper for safety.

Oyo Accord Party house reps candidate is dead

Jacob Funmi Ogunmola, the candidate of Accord Party for Atisbo/Saki East/Saki West Federal constituency is dead.

The former Chairman of Atisbo local government, died a few hours after attending a function in Saki.

The Nation reported that the politician breathed his last when he was being moved from Saki, his base to Lagos.

A source told the publication that Ogunmola had just finished a programme in Saki when he complained he was not well, which prompted the move to take him to Lagos.

This is also coming weeks after his successor, Wasiu Owolabi died in an auto accident.

Tight security as Abuja-Kaduna train station resumes operations

After eight months of suspension as a result of terrorists’ attack on the rail lines, Abuja-Kaduna train station finally begins operations today (Monday).

The correspondent in Abuja who was present at the train station as early as 7am to catch up with the resumption activities observed that there were armed police officers at the train station.

NPG had reported that terrorists attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, 2022, kidnapping 168 passengers and killing eight others.

The release of the victims had been in batches since then, with the last 23 freed in October.

While observing activities at the Idu rail station, passengers accompanied by their loved ones were seen carrying luggage moving towards the ticket hall to obtain boarding tickets for the first train scheduled to take off to Rigasa in Kaduna by 9:45 am.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for ECOWAS Commission Headquarters Held in Abuja

The groundbreaking ceremony of the new ECOWAS Commission Headquarters has been performed in Abuja.

The event took place at the commencement of the 62nd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in the Nigeria’s capital city.

The new headquarters project consists of a set of office buildings, comprising a central wing of ground floor plus 9 floors, framed by an east wing and a west wing (ground floor plus 7 floors) with a conference centre (ground floor plus 1 floor) and other buildings for maintenance, sports, care and bank.

The project, which is being financed by the Chinese Government through ChinaAid is expected to be delivered in 26 months.

In his opening address at the commissioning, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Alieu Omar Touray said the present activities of the ECOWAS Commission are being carried out in three seperate buildings across Abuja, Nigeria, and as such the need for a new secretariat that would accommodate all its staff in one location towards increasing productivity and efficiency.

He thanked the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for giving the land covering an area of seven hectares in the Institutions and Research Area located along the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport road for the building project.

Touray added that in July 2019, the ECOWAS Commission signed an implementation agreement with the Chinese Government who provided technical and financial support for the construction of the headquarters whose groundbreaking ceremony is being held, and praised the Heads of State and Government across the region for the cooperation and support towards the project and promised to ensure the completion of the project within the timeline proposed.

The Chinese Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS, Cui Jianchun said the government of China is keen on expanding diplomatic relations with Africa through support for construction projects like the new ECOWAS Commission heaquarters.

He said that new ECOWAS headquarters is the second interregional building to be sponsored by the Chinese government after the AU Commission headquarters in Addis Ababa.

He highlighted the principle of sincerity, real results and mutual partnerships which form the fulcrum of China’s strategy in Africa towards commitment to great good and common interests.

He however stated that these buildings demonstrate China’s sincere determination to support the unity, peace and development of the African region along her efforts to promote the Belt and Road Initiative to support Africa’s infrastructure development programme.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the host of the 62rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government,in a brief remark, said it is a great day for ECOWAS-China partnership after the signing of the implementation agreement for the construction of the new ECOWAS Commission Headquarters.

He said the construction of the building represent China’s commitment to West Africa’s sub-regional bloc and an evidence of a strong and mutual cooperation between Africa and China, adding that the new complex represent the unity and brotherhood of ECOWAS Member States and signifies a re-commitment to regional integration and development of the countries in the sub-region.

He thanked the Chinese Government for their technical and financial support for the building of a modern and befitting complex to house the ECOWAS Commission, and also praised the previous and current management of the ECOWAS Commission for working in collaboration with Nigeria and China towards the realization of the project.

The Chair of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS and President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, said it is an honour to attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the new ECOWAS Commission headquarters.

He thanked the Governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Peoples Republic of China for their contribution towards the realization of the building complex.

He said the new and modern headquarters will enable the staff of the ECOWAS Commission perform their duties better and provide a suitable working environment.

Aisha Buhari’s Critic Apologises After Regaining Freedom

Aminu Mohammed, the 500 level student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, has apologised for critising the First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

Mohammed had been arrested, arraigned and remanded before he was released on Friday night after Mrs Buhari withdrew the case against him.

In a tweet on his handle on Saturday, he said;

“I would like to use this medium to express my sincere apologies to those I’ve hurt especially our mother, Aisha Buhari. It was never my intention to hurt your feelings and Insha Allah I will change for the better. However, I’m also grateful for your forgiveness, thank u mama”.

The withdrawal of the suit against the student came after pressure from activists, Amnesty International, the National Association of Nigerian Students, and other citizens., who called for his release.

Two brothers nabbed for motorcycle theft in Delta

Two brothers of same parents who allegedly specialize in snatching motorcycles have been apprehended in Umunede, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta state.

The suspects identified as Chuks Kalu and Uchenna Kalu, who hail from the eastern part of the country, were nabbed this week by the Anti-Cult Volunteer Corps led by Mr. Moses Efamehule in Ika North East LGA.

Chuks Kalu, who claims to be a Levite (pastor) in one of the white garment churches in Owerre-Olubor was apprehended after he successfully attacked and made away with a victim’s motorcycle, but luck ran against him when his phone fell off his pocket.

He confessed that his younger brother, Uchenna Kalu was an accomplice. Three stolen motorcycles were recovered from them, including the motorcycle of the victim through whom their criminal activities were brought to limelight.

The suspect had removed the plate number and put his own.

The suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
