Drake lost $1 million bet on Argentina winning World Cup after last minute goal

While it might seem the “Drake curse” has been broken after he picked Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup, the Canadian rapper still lost the $1 million bet he placed on the South American country.

The fabled Drake curse was named in the late 2010s for the propensity of sports teams (especially soccer teams) to lose major titles when endorsed by Drizzy, whether by way of something as simple as Drake taking selfies with players or being spotted wearing a particular team’s jersey.

Before the World Cup final was played yesterday, Drake placed a $1m bet on Argentina to win the tournament in normal time.

As posted on Drake’s Instagram Story, he made the bet on Stakes and would’ve earned $2.75 million if he had won.

Because the game was still tied 3-3 following 3 late dramatic goals from French star, Kylian Mbappe, before regulation time expired, Drake missed out on his $2.75 million bounty. Argentina eventually won the World Cup after defeating France 4-2 on penalties.

Redesigned Naira notes to begin circulation today

The newly redesigned naira notes will go into circulation today, December 15.

Recall that the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, had in October announced that the apex bank would release re-designed N200, 500 and N1000 naira notes by December 15, 2022.

He stated that the old notes will cease to be legal tenders by January 31, 2023.

Emefiele pointed out that the redesigning of the naira notes would help to curb counterfeit notes, and reduce ransom payments to terrorists and kidnappers.

The CBN boss said it is worrisome that 85 percent of the total currency in circulation was being hoarded by Nigerians.

As such, he said the redesigning of the local currency would help to mop up the currency outside the banking sector, adding that out of about N3.3tn in circulation, close to N2.75tn is outside the banking sector.

This came about three weeks after the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), unveiled the new bills at a weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in Aso Rock Villa.

Banks are expected to disburse the new Naira notes to their customers from today.

12-year-old Nigerian chess champion granted asylum in US

Twelve-year-old Nigerian chess champion, Tanitoluwa Adewumi, and his family have been granted asylum by the government of the United States of America.

Adewumi, who rose to sudden stardom in 2019 for winning the New York state chess championship for his division, was living with his family in a homeless shelter.

The Adewumis, comprising Tanitoluwa, his parents, and his older brother, arrived in New York after fleeing Nigeria in 2017 due to fear of terror attacks from Boko Haram. They had sought religious asylum after the family arrived in the country.

Washington Post reported Wednesday that the US officially granted the family asylum.

Tanitoluwa Asylum refers to protection or safety given by a government to people who have been forced to leave their own countries for their safety or because of war.“We feel so relieved. Everybody is so happy,” said Tani’s father, Kayode Adewumi.

Tani’s chess career had been somewhat stalled because of his pending asylum application, as he hadn’t been able to travel to tournaments abroad, impeding his ability to reach his ultimate goal of becoming a Chess Grandmaster.

“It feels amazing because it’s been such a long journey. I’m just grateful that we’ve gotten this opportunity,” Tani said.

Matthew Ingber, part of the legal team that worked pro bono on the Adewumi family’s asylum case, said he first learned about Tani’s situation in the summer of 2021.
