Four killed by hoodlums in Anambra

Four persons including a woman were killed by hoodlums in Eziani in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday, January 10.

The yet-to-be-identified deceased persons were said to have been shot dead during an indiscriminate shooting by the miscreants armed with Ak47.

Confirming the incident, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the unidentified lifeless bodies were recovered during Police/military operations in the area. He said the bodies have been deposited in the morgue.

“Police/military operations have been intensified in ihiala and its neighboring town as operatives responded to a distress call in the early hours of today 10/1/2023 at Nzomiwu street, eziani, ihiala, recovered yet unidentified lifeless bodies, three males and one female at the scene.

Preliminary information reveals that the criminal elements armed with Ak47, started shooting indiscriminately and unprovoked, unfortunately, bullets hit four unarmed civil populace. The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.”

National grid constant collapse is due to obsolete equipment – House of Reps member

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Power and member representing Birnin Kudu/Buji Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, Magaji Da’u Aliyu, has blamed the frequent national grid collapse on use of obsolete equipments for power transmission by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

Aliyu who kicked against the planned privatisation of power transmission in the country through the TCN during his speech at a reception organised in his honour by his constituents in Birnin Kudu, Jigawa State, stated that privatisation in the power sector has been counter-productive as it had not yielded the required result.

The lawmaker further revealed that members of the House of Representatives are planning to bring in stakeholders in the Power sector to brainstorm on solutions to the sector’s challenges and how to ensure efficient power delivery across the country.

Police officer and two women arrested over missing baby in Lagos

The police in Lagos state have arrested a Police Inspector and two women over a missing baby in Lagos state.

The police inspector identified as Samuel Ukpabio who is attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID, is accused of forcefully abducting a baby boy from the mother, 35-year-old Fortune Obafuoso.

Punch reports that Obafuoso said on Friday, December 23, 2022, when she delivered her baby, the policeman arrested her and took her alongside her children, including the newborn, to the SCID on the allegation that she wanted to sell the baby, a claim she denied.

The distraught mum said while she was being interrogated by Ukpabio, her baby boy was forcefully taken away from her and handed over to a yet-to-be-identified woman.

She claimed that the police officer then gave her N15,000 and threatened her not to return for the baby.

She also alleged that he also sent her another N170,000 after she kept demanding for her child.

Following her outcry, the matter was investigated and the police officer alongside his accomplices were arrested. Confirming their arrest, the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said;

“Two ladies have been arrested; the inspector (Ukpabio) mentioned the person he gave the baby to and we arrested that person.

The person is in detention now. During interrogation, that person mentioned that she gave the baby to another person and the person has been arrested and detained.

Both of them have not denied collecting the baby but we still don’t know where the baby is. We are still working and by the end of tomorrow (Wednesday), we should be able to tell where they took the baby to. So, we have a total of three people in detention now; the inspector, and the two ladies.”

Osun College Rector escapes assassination attempt

Rector of Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, Dr Samson Adegoke, was on Monday, January 9, attacked by suspected assasins.

The incident occurred shortly after Adegoke had left Esa Oke for Ilesa town some minutes to 4 pm.

It was gathered that the suspected assassins travelling in a Toyota Camry opened fire on his vehicle.

Adegoke and his driver escaped unhurt, but the vehicle he was travelling in was reportedly badly damaged as a result of the bullets fired into it by the assailants.

Speaking to Punch, Adegoke said the attack was reported to the police in Ijebu Jesa.

He said;

“It happened between 3:30 and 4 pm on Monday at Eti Oni junction, (an area between Ijebu Jesa and Esa Oke). I was coming from school (Esa Oke), and a Toyota Camry was trying to drive against traffic and overtake us.

“Unfortunately for him, a tipper was coming, so the car could not overtake us. And we were able to go ahead. Thereafter, the car drove close to us and opened fire but we didn’t stop.

“We were going until the vehicle could no longer move again. I reported the incident to the police at Ijebu Jesa police station and they are on it. Police said they are taking steps.”

Osun Police Command Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the attack, said the Command has already commenced an investigation into it.

Federal Government announces plans to start screening passengers arriving Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) says plans have been concluded for all passengers arriving the country to be screened for COVID-19 using Rapid Diagnostic Test (RTD).

The Director, Port Health Services, Dr Geoffrey Okatubo, , disclosed this while speaking at the Ministerial bi-weekly meeting on the update of COVID-19 response and developments in the country’s health sector on Monday, January 9.

Okatubo said positive cases would be quarantined and all negative cases would be monitored.

He stated that the federal government was undertaking other measures as well to keep the coronavirus situation under control in the country.

“COVID-19 self-tests (RTD) will be handed out at all our international airports, land and sea borders, while travellers will also be informed on the importance of measures that they can take to prevent being infected,” he said.

He acknowledged that some people had experienced difficulties with the travel portal, noting that the health declaration certificate could also be filled out on arrival.

Okatubo stated that the health certificate form was also available at the country’s land borders, and that it was compulsory as it serves as a measure used to help protect everyone from the virus.

Edo Customary Court president kidnapped

The President of Igueben Area Customary Court, Mrs Precious Aigbonoga, was kidnapped on Monday morning in Ugoneki, on her way to court in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo State.

In a press release by the Nigeria Bar Association Publicity Secretary, Festus Usiobaifo, he said the NBA was working closely with the Edo State Police Command to ensure Aigbonoga regained her freedom from the kidnappers.

The statement read;

“The President of Igueben Area Customary Court, Mrs Precious Aigbonoga, was kidnapped on Monday morning around Ugoneki area, on her way to court in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo State.

“She is the wife of our colleague, Mr. Afebu Aigbonoga, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Etsako West Constituency 1.

“The Chairman of the Lion Bar, Chief Nosa Edo-Osagie, is deeply saddened by this news and condemns, in strong terms, the worrisome insensitivity of these bandits in kidnapping Mrs. Precious Aigbonoga; an easygoing, gentle, and hardworking judicial officer.

“The executive of the NBA is in close touch with the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dankwara. By the grace of God Almighty, His Honour shall be rescued unhurt, and the bandits brought to book, Amen.

“Let us keep His Honour in our prayers, please,” the statement added.

Two new trains for Blue Line Rail arrives in Lagos

Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has shared pictures of the new two trains that arrived in Lagos for the blue line rail.

He shared the pictures of the trains via his Twitter handle on Monday.

Sanwo-Olu said that the trains have been moved to the National Theatre station saying;

“Dear Lagos, we have taken delivery of two new train sets for the blue line rail.

These passenger trains have been cleared at the port of entry, and have been moved to the National Theatre station where they have been lifted onto the elevated rail tracks.”

Police confirm one dead in Ojota crisis, says two police officers were shot at by the Yoruba nation agitators

The Lagos state police command says one person died in the crisis that rocked the Ojota axis of the state in the early hours of today January 9.

According to the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Yoruba Nation Agitators came out in their hundreds and disrupted social and commercial activities at Ojota area of the State.

He said the members of the secessionist group shot at two police officers during the clash. He added that calm has been restored to the area.

Yobe declares January 9th and 10th public holidays to welcome President Buhari to the state

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has declared Monday, and Tuesday as public holidays to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari to the state.

This was disclosed in a statement by the state Head of Service, Alhaji Garba Bilal, in Damaturu on Sunday.

It was revealed that Buhari will be visiting the state to inaugurate projects, including Cargo Airport, Ultra-Modern Market, and Maternal and Child Health Care Complex.

Bilal said, “ this is to enable civil servants and the general public to receive the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who will be in the state on a one-day State Visit to commission projects.”

He, however, said civil servants are to resume work on Wednesday January 11.

Police arrested six members of notorious Shilla Boys in Adamawa and recover 14 stolen laptops

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested six members of a gang notoriously known as Shilla Boys.

Spokesperson of the command, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, in a statement on Sunday, January 8, 2023, said fourteen stolen laptops were recovered from the suspects.

“Further to the Command’s renewed commitment to checkmating crime and criminality ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Yola, the Adamawa State Capital, the Command on the 7/1/2023, disconnected the criminal network of Shilla gangsterism, connecting Upper and Down Luggere in Yola North Local Government,” the statement read.

“The suspected Shila boys specialise in burgling and stealing valuable items from peoples’ shops and houses within the State Capital.

“The outcome of this commitment designed by the command to ensuring public order, safety and security before, during and after the visit of Mr President, led to the arrest of 6 suspects, Faisal Abubakar,18, Abdulsalam Muhammed,17, Mahmud Musa ,18, Abdul Aziz Muhammed 18, Abubakar Jidda, 18, and Christopher Daniel, 30, all of various addresses.

“Interestingly, fourteen computer laptops were recovered from the suspects in the course of investigation.”

The Commissioner of Police, CP SK Akande, while commending officers and Men deployed for denying the suspects the opportunity to escape arrest and further directed total clamp down on criminals who are bent on disrupting the peace of the public.

The CP called on the populace to always inform the police of the whereabouts of Criminals and their hideouts.

The police boss equally assured the Government and good people of Adamawa state, of sustained effort to dislodging all criminal hideous and black spots in Adamawa state.

Dokpesi released after being delayed at London airport

Media mogul, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi has been released after an “incident” which led to him being delayed at the London Heathrow airport on Sunday, January 8, 2022.

It was reported earlier that Dokpesi was arrested after arriving at the London airport.

DAAR Communications management however said in a statement on Monday morning, January 9, that Dokpesi was released after being invited off the plane, before other passengers were disembarked.

It read;

“Dokpesi arrived via Frankfurt from Abuja on a Lufthansa airlines flight and was invited off the plane, before other passengers were disembarked.

“Dokpesi was delayed at the airport for some hours before his passport was stamped and he was cleared by British Immigration officials for entry into the country.

“His visit to the United Kingdom is not unconnected to the invitation of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar by the British government to share perspectives on issues around the 2023 presidential elections.

“The media founder is the Deputy Director-General, Technical & Systems of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.
